Notes on resetting your truck's computer ECM PCM ECU whatever you want to call it. Make sure you research how to properly reset your particular make and model because this method might differ depending. Make sure you research precisely how to reset and reprogram your systems. It varies from vehicle to vehicle.

Spent pretty much the whole year rebuilding my 1992 gmc Sierra with a 350 small block. I always thought that because i was using all original OEM parts that id never really have to mess with the computer but this video definitely motivates me to reset it. Especially if its this easy.
Make sure you do the restart with a cold engine.
@@HorsepowerHouse will do, thank you.
@@dedelee3391 and drive it gently for several days after restart.
@@HorsepowerHouse does this also apply to the Goldwing you showed how to reset the computer on? Start with a cold engine?
@martymac5372 yes. Always restart with cold engine. Let it idle.
My 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 was running very poorly, and a friend suggested I reset the truck's computer. I've never done this before, but it REALLY HELPED. The engine runs smoothly, and has lots of power. The computer was sending erroneous signals to the engine, causing misfiring and rough running.
i do this with every 8-10 yr old used car I have now. it helps every time
Placebo effect
Trying it now in my 06 Silverado… just cleaned and disconnected the MAF Sensor and needed to reset the ECU Thanks 🙏 and I’ll keep you posted. God bless
Make sure the engine is stone-cold upon restart
Just started it up and check engine light still on, reads 0172 & 0175… Letting it warm up now. Been about 5 minutes and it’s like 30 degrees out. lol
@@HorsepowerHouse i didn’t have small jumper cable to drain battery so I just left off the negative for 20 minutes with lights on? I’ve heard you can disconnect negative and positive and touch them together and then put back? What do you suggest?
If you work on anything yourself as far as car truck atv motorcycle etc, you should have a simple set of alligator clip jumper wires. So many uses. And very inexpensive.
Great! Fast easy content without too much other talking around it. My 6.5 didnt start after replacing pmd. Did this and now it runs again 🎉
got tons more videos about this truck.
Thanks for saying this. My 6.5 had a replaced PMD and one in the center console when I bought it. I realized neither of them had a resistor in the connector so bought one and made no difference (occasionally it goes into a limp mode). I will try this now!
For those always asking - Yes - try it on your vehicle. You won't 'hurt' anything by trying this. You will find out if this helps your 'problem' when you try it. I do this with EVERY older car I own. Now, this doesn't mean it will 'fix' every problem on every car (but it Might.) Just try it and report back.
Wow...just wow...i have a 1999 chevy 3500 HD...had a start and die issue and was told it was the security system...watched hundreds of RUclips videos for 4 days and worked on truck from cutting and bypassing wires....ran into this video when I gave up and tore my whole dash apart...and did what u said and dam truck turned on ...no security light no check engine...like a champ...thank u very much...
Well whataya know. good stuff
Did you have an aftermarket security system?
@@HorsepowerHouse no had the original security key that would flash when i tried to start it...
I have used this computer reset method to solve many problems on MANY cars of mine. Or just make them run better or shift better. It's remarkable what a simple thing can do.
@@HorsepowerHouse update it works but I have to do it all the time now if I let my truck sit for a half day ...
Really appreciate the advice!!! Did it to my 99 chevy tahoe after I replaced my catalytic converters. Thanks and now I'm a subscriber!!!
Got more videos about that truck and other cars etc on our channel. Check it out.
Thanks for the reply on your other video! Made a subscriber outta me.
Just replaced the O2 sensor and MAP sensor (TPS and VSS soon to get replaced also) and noticed my suburban idle searching for 2 days now. I disconnected the negative for a couple minutes after my swaps but, if anything, it just got worse. Gonna try this method out and if it comes to life closer to passing smog then you, sir, have earned yourself a beer 🍺
Unfortunately, just disconnecting the battery does little to nothing to reset the computer. You have to kill the capacitors within the vehicle's computer in order to truly reset the thing. Otherwise all you've done is reset some radio stations on your stereo. You have to do it the proper way, and it will definitely reset the thing. I have done it on every vehicle I've owned in the past 5 years. And it helped every one of them.
There is a Ford technician here on RUclips that showed me this way. And it works every time - so look him up. Search 'Reset ECM or ECU or PCM' or whatever you want to call it. Now, it doesn't mean it will solve every problem in a vehicle. But if you have a strange issues that seem to be 'computer related', it's the ticket to get it sorted out.
There is a specific base idle adjustment / reset if you've replaced the TPS sensor.
I would avoid bargain chinese electronic sensors & parts.
There are some exceptions where you'll see Mexico stamped on it. Usually that means it's U.S. made & partial manufacture or final assembly is done in North America.
Other wise just go with Delco unless you can bench test components before you install , which is not that difficult in most cases.

No cap real life i just did this and my chevy silverado is running better than it has ever ran.
Right on , Did just as you said and presto ,working like a hot dam.Thank you so much and didn,t follow some of the others who recomended drilling out the TBI body ,looking for a screw that shouden,t be screwed with. The ECM knows best afterall , seems to have recet all parameters . So simple. I,d recomend this method to anyone . Thanks again for some common sence.
I do this to every used car I buy now. Especially older ones. Make sure you do the re-start when the engine is cold.
And drive the car "gently" upon re-start. Don't go crazy and hotrod it immediately. Let everything happen casually for the first 200 miles.
Thank you sir! This helped when i replaced my 1997 k2500 4l80e trans with a trans from a 1995 k2500. Before reset the truck shudder and shook from1800-2200 rpms
I do this with every used car I own now. And it makes things better or resolves funky issues more often than NOT! :)))
Troubleshooting a super low idle has resulted in having another computer being put in. Ever since the shifting has gone way outta wack. Imma try this out, thanx
October 2022. Swapped distributors today. Doing this smoothed it right out! Thanks a bunch.
That was on a 1990 C1500 5.7
i do it with any used car i buy now.
To others viewing - make sure the engine is COLD when you do the re-start.
Worth a shot... i did a major tune up and its running worse.. hope this works
@@philiprollins2278 make sure you do the restart with a stone cold engine.
Might be something to try. I've done a lot to my truck. New transmission, fuel lines, brake lines, fuel injector, map sensor, mass airflow sensor, distributor cap and rotor, etc.
I do it with every vehicle I own
@@HorsepowerHouse have you had any issue where it'll be hard to start, run then stall out when it tries to idle? It'll do it for me two or three times before it runs. But it runs kinda rich. You can definitely smell it in the exhaust.
I sold it AS-IS a couple of years ago. It stopped running for no reason. And I replaced EVERYTHING that should make it run. Didn't work. So long, see ya. Got rid of it. And what a shame because I did a heap of good stuff to that stuff. All a waste.
1:35 of course reconnect your negative battery cable back on the battery post first....
I put a new camshaft sensor in it too
I'm tring this first thing in the morning I have put so much into my truck I gave up on it. Replaced fuel pump 3 times, map Sen, TPS, crank sensor, injectors every sensor, solenoid, disturbitor shaft and all. Ran good suddenly stopped would randomly start on nice days. Thought ECM recent and just seen video. I really hope this works.
call me crazy, but you probably need a professional mechanic. just throwing Parts at a vehicle is not the way to repair things. been there done that. even with this truck, after I replaced pretty much everything relating to Cooling system, and Air Conditioning system, the truck died 100 miles from home, and never ran again. and I replaced pretty much everything that would keep a vehicle from running. did not matter. sold the truck for $3,500, and was glad of it. see my other videos about this truck and you will see. talk about disappointing.
anytime you do a restart after resetting the computer, make sure the engine is Stone cold. but I can't promise it will solve your problem. sounds like yours has greater issues.
Make sure you study the exact procedure to do this for your specific vehicle. Because this can different from year make and model.
We have lots more videos regarding this 1990 Chevy Chevrolet C/K1500 c1500 k1500 pickup truck. See our playlist ruclips.net/p/PLVsdJzatTm_VLjk-TM6KIqExDrJF5L-bX
Thank you for your knowledge ✝️
I just did this after replacing the engine temperature sensor.ignition control modual .map sensor everything stayed the same
Then i jumped the neg to the positive and this helped my 93 silverado really worked thanks great video
Trying it today
Can a person get a salvage PCM/ECM and do this procedure to replace old defaulty one?
Hey, I have a 1996 Chevy K 1500 four-wheel-drive I put a new distributor in it And the camshaft sensor light pops up on the dash
Wow you engine bay looks so clean so you power wash it?
Yes. Every car I own I clean the engine.
@HorsepowerHouse I just washed my 90 chevy 454 and now she running like stink, no water in oil or air intake should I try this if I can't get the pcm "dry"
Of course. Simple green first.
I'm new here...like 10mins ago new...do you still have this truck?...because at a weak moment in 90 degree sun I was begged into buying a great deal at a auction.....by a teenage son with his summer job and his drivers permit burning a hole in his pocket and dreams of driving his own truck dancing.. nooooo...stampeding in his skull....I gave in
..and now ..well let's just say...we /he needs all the help he can get...lol..dad can do it for him...but he is gonna bust his knuckles.. blood equity is a good investment...anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for this video and we will search for more on your channel. !
After many successful projects, fixes, improvements, etc (see my other videos) - this truck eventually left me stranded 80 miles from home - and never ran again. I checked and replaced everything that could prevent a vehicle from running - but No - it never ran again (I messed with it for 6 months trying to fix it). You wanna talk about frustration and disappointment? Don't get me started.
Sold it for a puny (but thankful) $3500 a couple of years ago. (After putting way more than that into it.)
I don't recommend 30-year old vehicles - especially as a daily-driver. Too many gremlins will pop up. These are more of a project, toy, play thing.... just being honest with you. Put your money to something newer and more dependable....
Going to try it thanks.
My 454 dually 1991 c3500 keeps getting hot during summer in Arizona. I ripped everything out and replaced everything with new. It still gets hot in the summer. Runs up to 230 on surface streets. Took it to the builder and he’s stumped. He thinks the fuel air ratio is off or the fuel pump is leaning out. Will resetting the ecm ecu help it relearn after all the parts being replaced? Or is it just needing a 4 core radiator?
I guess you will find out when you try it.
Update?
@@alexlopezz6239 it was the prom.. the transmission was acting funny. I had it rebuilt and it started acting weird too. I took it to friends friend and he seen an internal code for Prom. I replaced the ecm and had to have a new prom programmed and it made the truck run new again. No leaning out, causing overheating, transmission running right and it’s good. Funny thing is I never had a check engine light come on. I guess it was stored on the computer.
thanks,, and do I need to drive after the idle relearn part or I can just shut it off and do the driving later?! thanks
Drive it later
I have trouble with the transmission 4l60 in 93 chevy truck. It shifts hard from 1 to 2 shifts.i changed the ecm behind the glove box 4 yes ago same problem it fixed it then .now again have you had this Same problem. Thanks Scott

Same truck, broke down, starter burnt up, finally got the right starter on after figuring out flex plate was 153 not 168. Engine was flooded with gas from a stick injector and from being stranded and trying to get it to start and trying to get starters to fit. Just filling the engine with excess fuel as I didn’t realize injector was stuck open. Removed gas from oil and engine and replaced ignition coil, distributer, cap, rotor, icm, plugs, wires as I had no spark. She’s running again like normal. But it’s blowing tons of white smoke out exhaust and smells of fuel, radiator is full and normal and oil isn’t milky. Injectors seem to be working as they should. Am I dealing with a ecm issue do you think? The truck always gave me issues starting in the heat which some say is attributed to ecm. Or do you think it’s the excess fuel being burnt off in oil? I changed oil twice already to try and get rid of all gas possible. Could it be possible carbon build up that broke off from gas being burnt up? Going to try this method of resetting ecm to see if it helps.
I sold my truck because i couldnt get it to run after it stranded me 80 miles from home - (replaced everything you did.) Good riddance is what I said.
I would either sell the truck or try a different computer on it.
My 92 sierra 350 doing all the same.did u fix it. Im thinking its stretched timing chain or stuck intake/exhaust valve
Have a 91 k2500…..is this the specific procedure for this rig, or whare do I search for specific models?
Thx for the tips….I’m a sub!
The same for most cars of that vintage
Make sure you do the restart with a cold engine. And drive gently for at least 100 miles before hard acceleration.
Just out of curiousity, is this the only way to clear/relearn the computer. It seem like everyone has their own methord of doing this.
There might be many ways. This is the easiest though. Unless you want to buy some device to do it (many hundred dollars).
And it can differ between year, make, model. Search for your specific model.
Dude I’m stuck I have a Tbi 90 k1500 I’ve replaced everything, map-tps-distributor then timed- plugs-wires-injectors-fuel filter, my truck idles great it sometimes pops the inj-a/b 10 amp fuse. Found a worn wire fixed it. But driving and load (uphill) it is just stagnant. Does not accelerate. Any ideas
Sorry, no. I got rid of mine because I was fed up with it.
Hi! Do you think this would work on a 2003 chevy Silverado 2500hd
You won't know until you try it
Can you use regular jumper cables
You can get proper small wires from any hardware store, home depot, walmart, auto parts store, Amazon, eBay. And you will need them forever.
Yes
So this is for Pre OBD2 vehicles then I'm figuring
Any vehicle "can" benefit from resetting the computer. There are tons of videos on YT about it. I do it with any older car I own. Even my 2007 2008 model (both Ford cars) benefitted from it. But the misinformation is - some people think merely disconnecting the car's battery's accomplishes this. Which is far far far from accurate.
Would this work to reset the injectors after putting a camshaft in
I guess you are about to find out....
I have a 93K3500 with the 7.4. It has 2 batteries, one is auxiliary the other is the main battery, which is which?
I think the one on the passenger side is considered "main" but I could be wrong.
I changed my fuel pump on my 1988 k1500 and my mpg is down about 3 mpg. Would this help? Could my ecm have not calibrated for the new pump?
I guess you will find out
Not to sound ignorant, but how would you do this if you have 2 batteries?
Hmm. not sure. Maybe do the same procedure to both batteries at the same time? 🤷
Or is one battery considered the "main" one? And just disconnect the other one.
I have a k2500 that gets fuel all the to the front of motor but not into the injectors to start my truck fuel pump is doing its job i habe no clue how to get it to start can you help me please
I have no help. Mine did the same. Could be the truck's computer. I sold this truck as-is and was glad of it!
Did this too my truck after installing new o2 sensors, rand great first day, second day it shut off driving home and haven't been able to start it, changed the fuel pump today started for 30 min and shut off again have no clue what it can be
Was your gas tank old, rusty, dirty inside? Might need cleaning or replacing. And fuel filter might need replacing.
No it looked pretty clean inside, and fuel filter is couple months old
Find a mobile mechanic on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Otherwise you will just be throwing parts at it. Get someone who knows what they are doing.
Hey what’s the name of the red wire ? U used
Ummm. A wire?
@@HorsepowerHouse the write u used to reset the system I know it’s not called jumper called …
I would send you a link but you can't buy "just one" online. Just walk into any common auto parts store, WalMart, Home Depot, etc and you can buy a simple set of test wire / jumper wires.
Can't you just leave the headlights on to drain the electrical ?
Possibly. That would take a long time though. This method only takes a couple of minutes.
Cant you just let the truck sit with the negative cable unhooked without the jumper cable?
Go to any hardware or autoparts store and get some simple alligator clip lead wires. You will need them all the time if you ever work on Stuff.
You can also take both battery cables off and connect them with a set of vice grips or something to each other and it'll do the same thing man
@@treetop1231 Yep, like draining any capacitor where you jump the two terminals with a screwdriver shaft. That's all you're doing here. No "Secret Sauce" or need for the jumper wire at all.
My truck has a new motor new transmission new whole front suspension under it. Put a lot of money in this truck.
So did I. Put a ton of work and money into it. Then the truck died and never ran again. And I replaced anything and everything. Still never ran again. I should have hired a mechanic. :(
