- Frankie and I are having a blast at our remote off grid cabin. Lots of fun in the woods and getting some work done on the workshop too. The little shop is almost ready for me to start installing solar panels. Simple living at it's best.

MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
Video of icebox:

Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

my Australian Shepherd does the same thing and a few other crazy poses on his back with feet above
+Doug Outside Got one of them Aussies too :). Great dogs and oh so smart.
This video brings me back. When my grandfather was alive he had a work shop out back, a little bigger though. Enough room for an L shaped work bench, table saw, bench grinder and a desk. The wall paper was old Playboy centerfolds, and he always had a supply of hardwood chunks for the wood stove. It was an old barn with old lead lined glass windows, and towering Ash trees acting as corner supports. He taught me to shoot from the back door, he taught me to measure, and he taught me how to tie fishing knots on the workbench of the 'hermit hut' as my grandmother called it. He passed away 8 years ago now, and the old hermit hut came down last year. Thank you for bringing back those old great memories.
Another fine video. We greatly appreciate all of them. Take care, be safe!
"Skin that one Pilgrim and I'll fetch ya another." Jeremiah Johnson is one of my all time favorite movies, didn't know we had that in common. That Frankie is as adorable as ever!
+T. A. “TA” Bernhardt "Pretty cocky for a starving pilgrim" :-D

if my shop was half that neat and organized I would get a lot more done.. thanks for the inspiration.
+Denn Handmade Knives I built it small so that I have no room for clutter. My last shop was 20x20 and I couldn't do anything cause I stored too much crap in it ha ha.Updates to follow.
The world needs more people like you sir.

Thanks, JC, that was a fun watch.
Thank you for the videos. I have to tell you that I really look forward to seeing your adventures. I also have to say that you are my #1 inspiration. Couple years ago I started " following my dreams" to live a more sustainable and self sufficient life with my wife and children. I chose to work "toward my dream" (as you say) in everything I do, instead of waiting until retirement. I'm 35 now and well on my way. Your videos have changed my entire outlook on life. I'm loving my homestead and living the dream. Thank you and please keep the videos coming!
Always more laughs watching your videos. Thanks again you two.

+Minktrappingpaddy Thank you kindly.
It looks like Frankie wanted to play with the squirrel. Great place there. Nice to see someone at peace and with contentment! Can't wait to see what you first bid build will be! Thanks for sharing your dream come true with us.
+Duane K Really anxious to build something now. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Great video. The shed is coming along nicely. Every man needs a little shed to hang out in and tinker with something while sipping a few cold ones. The fried chicken sure looks good. You really can't beat cast iron.
Thanks for the upload myself and my lab "Bucko" really enjoy you and Frankie's videos.
+Chad Morgan Love cooking with grandma's ironware. Thanks for commenting.
Our dog 🐕 Henry loves to inspect my work too. They definitely think they’re little foremen. Frankie is awesome and we love the videos. As always Boss, God bless you and yours. Love from the Judge!

Everything well organized Boss, well planned out. Frankie sure is a great companion, take care buddy, all the best......
+William Larkham Jr (Bigland Trapper) The little shack is coming into it nicely. Should suit my needs just fine.
You keep giving me more ideas ...Darn you! A small work shop I need for the winter time. Your shop see done up right! Nice job as always. You're making a wonderful retirement place for yourself. Things only few men could really have in life; peace of mind, beauty of nature, and knowledge of survival. Blessed Boss... Truly! I am also looking forward to your solar work. I am doing the same so and 400 watt, nothing big. Just computer, TV, 1-2 lights, maybe small dorm frig... I know a little but would be nice to see how you do it. You're a pretty good well rounded man, with most EVERYTHING! Not just a Carpenter. Idea for you in the future. Out-Door Cobb Oven! pay back for all the ideas you give me! LOL! Thanks again for your GREAT VIDEOS...Love to Frankie!... and God Bless
+CitySlicker Tony Hey buddy, I really know nothing about solar so this will be a learn as I go project and will certainly film it. I bought the system about a year and a half ago, just haven't been in any hurry to set it up. The old junker batteries have been suiting my cabin needs just fine. All the best to you and thank you for your compliments.
The old junker Batteries are a GREAT idea, with recharging on generator ! Plus sorry for my typing errors ! but you get the drift ;)
I'm always happy to get the alert that you've uploaded a new video!
Every man needs his cabin , and workshop , I am thankful to have both . Nice set-up you have there . Another great vid , and that fried chicken , Wow --- Must try !!!!Cheers
Absolutely love your videos Boss. Yours is my favorite channel by far. Very relaxing, educational, and funny all in one. Can't wait for more. You never disappoint. Give Frankie a pat on the head for me and keep on enjoying your cabin time.
+Todd Ogreen Thanks Todd. Glad you enjoy them.
Not talking about you BOSS!! That's why I always watch your video's several times. You show a true vision of what off the grid is!! Keep up the great work!! and don't think for a minute I was referring to you! Thanks Again!!
+dave hogan I didn't think you were referring to me cause the pieces weren't fitting but thank you for the response. I was offered 7 TV shows and declined them all. They make those reality homesteaders look like idiots and Frankie want's none of it LOL.You tell em Frankie :c)~
+thebossoftheswamp : I've often thought that your youTube videos are so much better than the junk that's on TV. They find a formula and keep churning out the same show, over and over and they invent "drama" so they can hook the viewer into sitting thru 10 minutes of commercials. Boss, I'd honestly sit thru an hour of commercials for 10 minutes of one of your masterpieces.
+mibengal I can't stand the drama they throw into those Alaska shows. I watched 2 episodes of the Mountain Men and never went back. They can't pay me enough to deal with that.
Glad to hear that! Hope the two of you find some time to relax!!! LOL
Well om a miserable wet day i watch this then I smile and the sun makes a show I been Frankied!!!!! good to see you both well JC
+trapper23ful Hard not to crack a smile when Frankie's after a squirrel :-)
Hi Boss another great vid Since my wifes passing 2 years ago you have been a wonderful help for me I have a chocolate lab a gift from my wife that knew what i needed as her health continued to fail Thank you for being here for us Long Life to you & Frankie

Hay boss I'm sorry you never got to meet your grandparents I grew up across the road from mine very close with them but its a very sad day today gramp died this morning I learned a lot from him and was still learning but I know he is happy now he has been missing nan for a long time now she died 7 years ago knowing that they are together tonight brings me peace have a great day.
+Trevor Fillmore So sorry to hear the news of your grandfather. Very sorry for your loss.
Thank you.
Thanks for taking me along friend. Always enjoy seeing updates and that you are living in peace with nature and Frankie. Very cool your have things from your parents and grandparents (sorry you never got to meet them). Kids nowadays don't take hand me downs as well, but they don't make quality like they used to.
+Jason D It always pleases me to work with things that belonged to my parents and grandparents. I love my vintage ironware.
thank you for sharing....
Great to see you and Frankie again along with the workshop update. Can't have anyone better than Jeremiah Johnson to look out for your shop. You've come far pilgrim. Yep it feels like far. Best to you boss man.
+Donnie G Head due west of the sunset and take a left at the Rocky Mountains :-)
Good to see another video has been released. Thanks JC.
The workshop is coming along nicely! Frankie was so funny trying to get at that squirrel, lol
+misstine71 Thank you my friend. Frankie's got some really cute antics coming up in the next video. Cheers :-)
Great shop. And no place is complete without Jeremiah Johnson.
Love the workshop!! Really like that stove!! Dinner looked Fantastic!!!! Frankie sure was having fun with that squirrel!!
+rodney newbury The chicken was awesome buddy. :-))
The workshop is looking good, you'll be working on stuff in there in no time!
Brightened my whole day..thank you!!...Wish I were there!!
Good to see you this morning Boss, the shop is coming along nicely. It's going to be convenient now that you have a place to do projects in. That Frankie shue is a card, give him a pat for me. God Bless till the next time.
+BeaverRick It'll be nice to have this little space to putter in. Lots of fasteners to organize now :-/
Just returned to NC last night after spending three weeks at our camp in PA. No internet at the cabin so seeing three new vids is a treat. I already miss sitting by the wood stove, it was 17 below one morning and it was very cozy in the cabin, no furnace blowing or utilities used just burning standing dead timber. Thanks for another great vid!!
+rl Avery Sounds like a great time. I always enjoy sitting by the stove. Not much in the world more soothing than that.
Hi. I just wanted to say thank you for your vids. You and Frankie are great. You remind me to stop and enjoy life from time to time. PLEASE keep the vids going they are a bright spot on a cold ND winter day
+rbf caf Too many people rush through life and then complain that life is going by too fast... :-/
Boss love the workshop and the old potbelly stove. I have a old 12x16 shed that I'm going to add to for my workshop and I'm going to put in a potbelly stove converted to propane for when I'm out there. Your a "REAL" inspiration to all of us Boss!! Now I'm going to watch your video at least 10 more times! Keep them coming Boss! Thanks so much for all the joy you bring your viewers.
+dave hogan Thank you Dave. Have fun with your shop project.
Hope you can give all of us newbies a detailed solar class on what we need and how to connect all the components, And the ac/dc connections. Thank you SO MUCH LOVE WATCHING YOU AND FRANKIE
+Robin Connell I will be filming the process so we can learn together.
thank you LOVE the snow and nature videos!! reminds me of home, Have a WONDERFUL DAY
much love for Frankie!
Great video JC.
That workshop is awesome, well organized and thought out (I like the wader hangers)
Great to see the cherokee in her element.
All the best buddy, enjoy the winter
Regards
Mark
Forgot to mention that chicken looked tasty!
+backcountrypipe Thanks Mark. My last shop was 20x20 and always filled with junk. This one is 10x14 and no room for junk. I'm really learning the advantages of downsizing. The chicken was awesome :-)
OK J C, I'm a 1:19 into this video and you made the comment "I'm not sure what the date is".... my friend that says it all about the life you lead...not tied to a clock or a calendar and doing what you want, when you want! Now that's living! I really enjoy your channel and your videos and vey happy for you to have created such a good life for yourself. Thanks for posting this!
+Mizpah61 Thank you my friend. I think you will enjoy my upcoming vid. Frankie and I started the new year off with 29 straight days at the cabin. Best new year ever. Cheers.
Love the video... You and Frankie are the best!!! Love the workshop!!! Cheers from Arizona!
Life is good when it doesn't matter what the date is and your best friend keeps the beer guzzling squirrels out of the goods! Very nice work on the man cave ... but I think every structure you touch turns into one! Thanks for the update☺
+fannygitchyurgun spiritwind Frankie keeps the tree rats out of the beer lol :-DThanks for your compliments.
Great to watch you JC, the shop looks neat and I can't wait to see the solar installation......
Thanks for sharing. Frankie is a hoot.
The shop is coming wright along looks good thans for sharing your time at the cabin atb John
Can't get enough of your videos My Friend
Thank you for saying so :-)
My Wife always comments on how she likes your voice too !
I agree !
Thanks for sharing your journey.
Looks great friend. Coming together nicely. Great bench stock area with the coffee cans. Frankie is a real good helper. He never complains. Stay safe .
+john duckworth I have a new vid coming up tomorrow with more Frankie antics. Enjoy.
Looking forward to it. Thanks
I love the cinematography of your channel. In my opinion, the best quality overall.
+TheOldLookOutLodge Thank you very much.
What a wonderful video, JC! This brought back so many memories; my Dad had a similar vice on his workbench in the garage in my childhood home, and your tongs (for the fried chicken) look just like my mother's; I think I still have a pair but rarely use them due to age. And Frankie reminds me of our deceased mini-doxie, Darby, who also used to dance/bark the fence line chasing squirrels in the tree in our backyard. Thanks for the smiles, happy tears, and memories. MJ
+MJ Trainor Thanks for sharing your memories. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Your channel is awesome, I love your narration voice (well the way your voice projects when your telling your story), and Frankie has real personality
+New Beginnings with Budhi and Cyndi Thank you kindly. I appreciate your compliment.
Frankie with that squirrel! HaHaHa
Thanks for the video!
another great video it's great to see the shed coming along really well for you
Very sweet little workshop Boss and I like how you re-purpose things that most folks just toss. I'll be very interested in seeing your solar setup in future videos as well. Stay warm this winter.
Jon
+Jon Drew Thanks Jon. Lots of folks anxious to see the solar go in.
Nice digs you got there. I have to tell you that " Jeremiah Johnson " was and still is my most favorite move. I thought it was so good that I watched it 7 times in the movie theatre in a 2 week span. I had no choice cause it was before even VHS tapes. Enjoy your workshop and I hope Frankie finds his Frisbee .
+Jurgen Ritzhaupt I been watching that movie since 1972 and don't foresee ever quitting. Love the film.
Always good when you don't have to know what the date is huh Boss!! Great cabin set up! I have a few of my parents things they no longer use...thankfully they are still with us but I know years from now they'll be extra extra special. Take care JC
+Happilyretiredmark Most definitely. I'll never go back to the 40hr week ever again. Cheers :-)
when you simplify life you really require very little power. i have a cabin out back and have 2 old car batteries. run a few lights and satelite radio for 60hrs per battery. then i haul one out and recharge it. this spring i will get a small panel to maintain the battery.
thanks for the video boss!!
Nice work shop and I love that movie Jeremiah Johnson! I own it and have seen it about 20 times! LOL Take care boss!
+AULTimate OUTDOORS Best movie ever. I wish Redford would make a sequel.
I know! It would be awesome. That new movie Revenant is awesome too! You would like that one boss!
I went to see that movie with my older brother when it came out. I think it was 1969, I was 6 years old. It is still one of my favorites. I drive my wife crazy with old movies I watch repetitively. "Mountains got its own ways pilgrim". lol
LOL That movie the Revenant is based back in the early 1800's about a group of trapper/mountain men. Beautiful scenery and great movie. Its based on a true guy and true events.
Thanks for sharing Boss, the place is looking great.
Good to see ya back, Frankie. It's been too long. You keep an eye on that biped of yours. He seems to think he is the boss for some reason.
ATB
Ron
+Ron Johnson Outdoors Frankie's chief inspector on all jobs :c)~
I love your channel. I have watched nearly all your videos even though I only found your channel about a week ago. Frankie is brilliant and a good supervisor. Cant wait for your next video . Cheers
+full stop Welcome to my channel. That's a lot of video watching for a week.
+thebossoftheswamp yes but it sure made my long train journey every day more enjoyable!
Frankie keeps me in stitches as my cats do....miss having a dog, but afraid I have had my last of them, don't want to leave one behind...your work is wonderful, I know, say that every time, but love watching you creating...nini Frankie...oh huggies to you....sorry married just a little hug for you dear...dog gets all the lovin. LOL
+Dallas_Red Frankie gets all the Lovin. Chick magnet he is :c)~
Another great video! Thank you for putting out such great vids that are such fun to watch. They also inspire others, like myself, to keep on working towards the dream! God Bless you and Frankie!!
+NoBudgetHomestead Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. God Bless.
I enjoyed that video a lot. BTW, that stove is called a parlor or cylinder style stove, it is much nicer than a pot belly. The cabin site is coming along nicely, congrats on all your hard work.
+photog20001 Been calling it a potbelly all my life so I guess some habits are hard to break :-D Sure will be nice having that workshop there.
