MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
Video of icebox:
Video of Gas Refrigerator:
Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

I like the waltzing matilda tune, whilst you made some tea, a nice Australian touch.
Just when I thought I couldn't like the channel any better, you threw an old jeep cherokee XJ into the mix. NICE!!!
Jeep lover here :-)
Yet another great video. Thanks for the update.
You're welcome. Thanks for commenting.
Great videos, catching up with you're channel
+Arie Lanke Thank you :-)
Fantastic! Cabin looks Great! Frankie too! It's always fun to watch your videos.Thanks.
Frankie's approves of the project so far. Gotta keep him happy.
Love your channel. First channel I check when I go into RUclips. You put a smile on my ugly mug from the start right up until the finish of your videos. Thanks for your clever Witt and reminding your followers to live life. You must be one hell of a guy.
Thank You, Vinny
PS, Say hi to Frankie
There is nothing that makes me feel closer to nature than the total quiet and stillness of the woods after a big snowfall.
I thank God every day that I'm blessed to live in the country!
Love your little piece of paradise too!
I couldn't agree more Pammie. There's no place better than the forest during a snowfall. Thank you for all your views and comments.
Liked the background music Waltzing Matilda well the instrumental version.
I've been binge watching since finding your channel. As a senior who's been on a mission to eliminate as much dependence on utilities and excess in my daily life, you've added inspiration and I enjoy watching.
+chihuahuas11 Happy to hear you enjoy my postings and glad you find them inspirational. Best of luck with your venture.
Man, boss, we (my whole family) were all comfy watching the video...and it just ENDED! We were just getting into it! As always, we appreciate the hard work you put into this video, and looking forward to more!
always enjoy your videos. thank you for taking the time to share. Common sense is anything but common these days! good luck on the deer hunt.
"Common sense is anything BUT common these days" Man I like that and will recycle it someday. Well said.
my grandma said her father made a box that fit in the window that they keep milk and other stuff like that in in the winter keep it cool.
Loved the video as always.. and wow - what a great looking coffee cup!! Thanks again JC... can't get enough of the cabin videos!
Great cup for sure buddy. Thanks again.
When you talk int he background , it reminds me of when I was a kid watching the old Walt Disney movies lol
Love the videos and my wife and I really enjoy watching them here in Chile. It is early summer here and things are warming up. Great ideas and application of common sense.
It always amazes me to learn that my videos are reaching out so far. Sometimes it's hard for me to grasp the magnitude of the internet. Thanks for commenting.
thebossoftheswamp Life here in Chile is very similar to yours. For the most part, everyone provides for them selves out in the country side. So no matter weather you are in the far north in the driest desert in the world or way down here in the cool, wet south (Just north of the Antarctic) , you need a well you dig one. You need a house then cut the lumber and build one. No rules just right living.
I’m going to watch every video you got! I love what you’ve done! It’s just our style. Thank you so much for sharing. Oh have you ever thought about building a root cellar for long term bulk storage?
The area beneath my cabin serves as a root cellar :-)
Awe, that’s great!
Hi, Boss! Thanks for the update on the ice box. I have been telling my hubby about it, so when we build, we can have one, too. I thought the birch bark tinder was interesting, too. Frankie was a big help collecting it. His intelligence continues to amaze me. I hope you have a good rest at the cabin.
The icebox is one of the coolest projects I've ever created. Yes, pun intended :-))
Frankie's pretty funny isn't he?
I would like to see more of you cooking dinner and playing with Frankie. When you go to the cabin, it's like we go with you. Glad to see how the ice box is working out.
I'll be doing more cooking in upcoming videos and Frankie and I are working on writing a new Christmas vid as a part 2 of our last Christmas production. Lots more stuff on the way.
The cabin looks great!
Perfect place to spend the evening ..
Thank you. I'll be there most of the winter :-))
I want to thank you for passing on your knowledge. We're working on going off grid/homesteading
Good luck with your new venture :-)
Another enjoyable video and I love the song you edited in with it, Waltzing Matilda. Keep up the great channel.
I'm surprised at how many folks know that song.
Thanks for commenting.
so beautiful and tranquil, Boss!
Good video Sir. As always, thanks for posting. Take care, be safe!
Thank you my friend. All the best to you.
Beautiful video, I love the simple living, this the way to live ,the old way is better ,always, people lost the good old ways .Keep making your videos, I love them all, people are all lost in today's world ,great music also, love it.
Thank you
Good to see you're doing well. Been a little worried about you with the reports of all the snow up there.
The old Jeep Cherokee is a keeper. I had one with the inline 6 - best engine ever made. I regret selling mine to this day.
I'm looking for another Cherokee. I love the things. The straight 6 can't be beat. Great rigs!!!
I wanted to thank you this Thanksgiving. I enjoy everyone of your videos and think of the fun I had as a kid hunting, fishing, camping and all the chores that went with it. I hope you and Frankie have your feet up in front of the fire today.
Thank you my friend and a Happy Thanksgiving to you as well. Been a lazy day for us both. I'm enjoying the down time.
Beautiful woodwork! Love your video's very informative and sensible. Keep em comin.
Great job as usual. Still fascinated by the icebox. Thanks for the update.
You should write a book. Seriously. There's a whole generation that would benefit greatly from your knowledge.
I plan to :-)
I love your cooler box. I would like to build one in my cabin. Genius!
Good luck with your project.
I love the idea of the narrow path in, adds to the peacefulness of it all.
Ahhhh of course Frankie enjoys the birds
love the adventure!
You make a great point with common sense things being bred out of society! It amazes me and I'm only 24. Luckily I had some outdoorsmen in my life to make sure that never happened! Love your videos and I wanted you to know some of the younger generation loves your videos!
That ice box is simply the bomb! Seen it several times in your videos and still love it. Well done! Hope all is well with you two & the 2 kids! 🥰
Thank you.
Your right, common sense is not always common. Great video! Cheers from Idaho.
as an aussie i gotta say i love the music in this video. Waltzing Matilda is our national song. makes every aussie homesick when they hear it
+Greg Farlow I was wondering why the only folks that recognized that song where Aussies. I learn something everyday :-))
Waltzing Matilda🇦🇺, nice boss👍
Hi, I just found you. I'm so glad I did. It's nice to see that someone gets to live the dream. GOD BLESS.
Welcome to my channel and blessings to you as well :-)
Seeing Frankie younger like that, reminds of Weber dogs that have gone to dog heaven, that I miss so much. Some drove me nuts on a daily basis others, every day with others was a gift from God the Father.
Frankie is driving me nuts at this very moment.
What's better than a cup of tea by the wood stove. This is my favourite time of year, in a odd way I find it calming.
Fantastic video as always, just amazed at your set up, so greatfull that you share it with us.
Regards
Mark
Oh how I wish it snowed here like that! You've done a really great job JC sharing how everyone can live through a rough winter by thinking ahead and preparing during Spring and Summer. Common sense and not being allergic to work :))) Your frig turned out perfect! Thanks JC and Frankie (that poor shy dog) LOL
"Allergic to work" Hah!!! That seems to be going around. I really enjoy the whole process of preparing for winter. The gathering of birch bark, splitting the kindling and the firewood and all that. It's very rewarding to have everything ready when and where I need it. Life's what you make of it eh Melody?
We really enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one ~ you and Frankie are an awesome and entertaining pair ~ I love that mug tree in the cabin and now I'm out scouting for similar branch shape ~
Glad you enjoy them and thank you for saying so. Good luck with your branch hunting.
When you pulled up to the front of the cabin - with the snow coming down and the whole scene - I am a winter lover and that was just beautiful. Oh - and common sense - some people just do not have it. Thank God some people still do. Thanks so much - love your vids and, of course, Frankie is the best.
Winter lover here too Susan. After getting the fire lit I played outside with Frankie in the falling snow. Winter in the forest... there's no place quite like it.
Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship and ingenuity.
I showed your original cooler box to my Uncle who lives out in no mans land and uses an electric fridge in the garage. he liked it so much he's working out how to make a "Mother Nature Icebox" as he calls it. And you hit the nail right on the head, people just dont think to go the simplest route anymore. Once my uncle saw your video, he said "it's such a simple concept, no wonder people don't think like this anymore." So once again, Thank JC. I hope you enjoy the boxes people have sent you, and i hope you dig up that venison spiedie recipe i sent up to ya over the summer. take care buddy.
Thanks for the reminder on the spiedies again. I've got so much going on all the time that things like this slip my mind. Glad you're enjoying my vids and thanks for saying so.
Free cold weather, great cooler box. looks like a no brainer to me.
That's what I thought :-)
I discovered your channel a week ago and I have been watching one after another. I work a very stressful job and after work, watching your videos especially your cabin videos is my escape. I feel like I am with you at the cabin and I get a break from the stress for a bit. My wife and I are on our way to more simple life. Can t wait to get there. Keep up the great videos!
+KISSARMY8686 Welcome to my channel and best of luck to you with your plans of simplification. Cheers
Thanks for another great video, always appreciated. Love your cooler box idea, we have a cabin and I,m going to suggest something simular , hope you don,t mind , we steal your idea .Blessings .
I don't mind at all. I post my ideas for people to take advantage of, just not take credit for lol. The icebox is awesome and I'll be building one for my NH cabin too.
No. I wont take any credit on line or off . We have a cabin that we use a generator for and it would be a good candidate to try the ice box on , thanks again .
Great video can't wait to make an icebox! Love your videos and wisdom!
Boss no fan. No microwave omg. Lol. Old school. Yea gotta love iff grid. Again great joy to watch your videos
I Love feeding the birds as well, I thoroughly enjoy it too !
I put out about 2, 20# Bags per week . Between the Birds, Rabbits, Squirrels & Crows it just goes.
Watching all of them is absolutely therapeutic.
Very therapeutic indeed :-)
We truly appreciate you & Frankie.
We just lost one of our little Fur babies "Ponte" to cancer. Very sad indeed. I miss him Sooooo Very Much. We had at least 12 Great Years with him, he was always such a Happy Boy !

Don’t worry we’re not all lost I’m 24 and I’m a self taught bronze smith and cider maker I like to think I have that common sense you speak of and god willing when it’s possible I’ll be living the homestead life myself, maybe somewhere a bit warmer.
We've spent most of the summer and fall at the cottage/camp. We come home long enough to get the mail and get a few things done and back we go. Got to love this kind of living. Later my friend and all the best.
You're living the life Barry. Don't change a thing.
Another great video. I couldn't agree more about the lost knowledge of our ancestors. They managed without the modern conveniences and we seem to forget it worked for them for hundreds of generations.
That is the nicest little cabin and property you have there and I always enjoy your videos. The common sense approach you mention that a lot of people have seemingly forgot over the last couple of generations, really has me thinking how to waste less resources and money and simplify my life as well. You've hit on something that I think a lot of people can identify with these days who are trying not to let the rat race of the modern world consume them. If you ever decide to write a book I think that would be the icing on the cake to go along with these videos. Thanks again for taking the time to put these videos online and stay warm this winter, I think it's gonna be a repeat of last year.
Hello again Jon, I always look forward to your responses. Two subjects I could ramble on are life and finances but I don't live my life chasing dollars, just holding onto the ones I have. Frankie and I recently got a TV offer but we declined. Not changing my life for wages. We live on a shoestring and like it that way. I never ever ever ever want to go to work again or have to answer to anyone. Just need enough to keep Frankie in toys and cookies. Life is what you make of it, and we're trying to make the best of it. All the best to you.
Boss, you're so right about the old ways being the best ways...not necessarily convenient but gratifying in their self-reliance and independence. My grandparents raised 10 children without a spark of electricity and a hand pumped water system. I think simplicity promotes stronger bonds as well...you learn to work together instead of everyone being off doing their own thing...
J Peck People don't even sit and chat anymore, they're all face down in their phones. Probably texting each other ahahahahah
Hello JC and Frankie. New sub. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for making them. Cheers!
Could watch these videos all day. Cabin in the woods. All simple nothing fancy. My kind of life! You get great lakes brewery up there?
Glad to hear you enjoy them and thanks for taking the time to say so. I'm not familiar with that brewery but I'll look the next time I'm beer shopping.
Shoot me a message with your ship to address and I'll send you some. It's a big deal around my parts and at time very hard to get.
Awesome idea Boss, you da man. My father-in-law, who grew up in a very rural farm setting, brought that traditional common sense to town when he built his own family home in the 70's and made an awesome cold room with outside venting. The stuff they kept in that cold room was epic, from root crops to canning to produce to the big left over turkey in the roaster. Blizzards? No problem. They could have lived for a month or two on those cold stores. Same design as yours basically just a larger version.
Canesser Yep, common sense is becoming a thing of the past. Folks used to know all this stuff, it seems to have been forgotten nowadays.
Wow! I know that this comment is a few years later, but slowly but surely making my way through all your videos 😀 This video has just saved me a lot of headaches! I will be moving completely off grid very soon and had thought about moving the fridge outside in the winter to save amp hours with the lower sunlight hours, but this idea is amazing!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Have fun with your new project. This works awesome :-)
best idea i have seen for a cooler box if you dont mind ill be building one for my self i cant even tell you how impressed i was with the box thanks for the videos
reeltime264 I don't mind at all. I post my ideas for people to use, just please tell others where you got your idea from. Best of luck with your project.
Great video, I am sure by now you have alot more snow. As for the gifts you receive, you reap what you sow. Your video's and attitude about life is inspiring. And you are right about common sense, not many have it any more. God bless you and frankie.
The big storm stayed west of us and only a few inches fell here. I'm thankful for that.
Blessings to you too my friend.
I think franky will appreciate that jeep in a month boss, the cabin looks nicer with some snow on it. love the video man.
I was out today scouting some new trapping property. Saw a mess of down birch and thought of you. Keep living the dream my friend. Someday, perhaps when my 4 small children are grown, I just may have an off the grid lifestyle of my own.
Best of luck with your dreams my friend. No better feeling than to conquer them.
Good to see ya back at the cabin. I love the refrigerator. You are so right about forgetting our roots. You jeep will get ya anywhere. But the tires do make it or break it. I love my jeep. But it will slide if the tires are not off road type. Enjoy your cabin. :)
Yep, definitely time for better tires. Love the Jeep.
it's all location. Can't do that in the south.
You gave me the incentive to build a ice box of my own. I had a small refrigerator out in my garage for overflow food and my beer. I have an antique cook stove in the garage so I am cooking out there all the time and needed the refrigerator out there. I finished it last night, except for covering the insulation on the door. I have to find a more flexible plastic for that. The tests so far are great, thank you for giving me the idea for this project. One more appliance taken off the electric grid!
Sounds great. Now ya just gotta get this stuff in the house so they become part of your daily routine that you can enjoy conveniently. Once you go this rout you'll never go back. Keep up the good work.
just real infromative and melow music, My grandfather had a grape box nailed to the window ceil in the kitchen in the 1960th were in He had food stuff in there ,had a small frig so it came in handy. Nice I like your chain of thought. Gallon jugs and vent for cold air to come in. I have two old ice Box,s note ice is up top compartment ,cold air is heavy hot air rises and the cold go,s down. just a tip. so put your jugs on secound shelf. Nice job thank you you made my night watching your video. also civil war kinda music.
Great video as usual Boss. I really like your ice box idea. It's really working great. No arguments. I liek your idea of storing wood and tender up in your attic. I hadn't thought of that one. Great idea.
The cabin is small so the attic is a great place to store the tinder. I always keep a pile handy right at the top of the stairs like that.
I love how clever this cooler box is. Makes me wonder why we stopped using the cold of winter, even to save on electricity. I know that I have a mudroom that I keep a cooler in to keep beers and other sealed things cold during the winter.
I thought about building this about 5 years ago and finally made time to do it. It works beyond my expectations and I'll be building another for my other cabin :-))
It certainly a lot easier to work with nature than to fight it. Looks like I can scratch a refrigerator off the list. Thanks
Happy Thanksgiving JC and Frankie :)))) Thank you for all the wonderful video's you share with us and many blessings in the coming new year!
Thank you Melody. Happy Thanksgiving to you too.
All the best to you and yours.
Loved Your Video Man. Appreciate Your Perspective On Common Sense and The World We Life In.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Frankie and I will be holed up at the cabin most of the winter so we should have some pretty interesting footage in the future. Cabin fever with a border collie. Call 911 ha ha.
thebossoftheswamp Anything with U-2 is a hoot. Will stay tuned 4 the up-dates. Yes-Sa!
Love it. Thanks again. Phattdawg
JC, another great video! The ideas you share with each new release are like a breath of fresh air. We find ourselves like you already stated over complicating just about everything we do. I like your back to basics attitude, certainly something that we are missing out on. A few years back here in New Brunswick, Canada we suffered through an ice storm knocking most of the area off the grid. We dug out the old Coleman and had supper, along with putting all the perishables out in a few coolers on the back step. We went for a drive and people were lined up at the local big M with an hour wait. Makes a fella think how ill prepared society really is. Anyway keep up the great work and say hello to Frankie for us.
We lived through a few really bad ice storms as well with power outages for nearly 2 weeks. So many folks lost all their perishables which I could never understand. It was an ICE storm!!!! HELLOOOOOO.... ICE is falling. Yes my friend, to say our society is ill prepared is an understatement. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
It’s 2025. Still one of my favorite episodes.
I love love this video!! You are right. the warmth of a fire cannot be beat! :-)
Thank you for saying so Jay :-)
Last year of the good old jeep Cherokee. One of my fav. 4.0 l. Four door 4#4. Great runners. Good mpg. Love em. Cheap to get into and cheap to fix up. Nice vids. Thank you for your share. ONE LOVE
+hairfarmer07 Jeep really went down hill when they stopped making these. I also have an 05 Grand Cherokee and it's nothing but a glorified grocery getter more fitted for soccer moms. There's nothing "Grand" about it.
Winter as arrived i see! Hear to man ..but next week suppose to rain & warmer temps! I love how your cooler is working...sometimes the simple things are the things that work the best!! Going to get your Address later on and i'll send something!!
Locked in the fog and raining here this morning buddy. The snow is slipping away.
Just got my last show done and over with so now I gotta catch up on some videos watching before I head to the cabin. Good luck with your line.
Be Safe! 6 feet in Buffalo, NY... I think Frankie want's Key West FLA. Life should be an adventure and is..be Happy my Friend and God Bless.
Glad we didn't get the snow they did. Only a few inches here and now it's disappearing with the rain. Good to hear from you buddy. God Bless.
I always enjoy your videos. I have a cabin in the mountains and can relate to how you feel about your place.
Nothing like some cabin time to ease the mind '-))
Absolutely
That's a good one boss thanks!
Have a good one Boss!! from the Netherlands!
Want to build this at the cabin this summer! Hope it turns out half as good as yours!
First time to watch, will have a look at your other stuff so far enjoying this

Cabin looks good Boss. Just leaving to my
Cabin getting ready for opening day deer hunting
Monday. Good luck be safe!
Good luck with your meat harvest.
As usual Boss another great video. Love your cabin time videos, they keep me thinking about what to do next at my place. Lets see now; firewood in, kindling in, fat lighter for starter in . . . but you can just keep that snow up north for a while yet, OK. You and Frankie take care now!
Ah C'mon Steve, ya gotta have a little snow around the place. I love the snow and cold more than mosquitos. All the best to you.
I ave enjoyed your videos emencly they are very enjoyable thanx a lot len
We have a Cherokee classic 4.0 high out put with a 4.5 lift and 33 inch tires we love it! We drive it so much more than our grand Cherokee both are 1996 the grand has seat warmers, leather, sunroof all the perks but we still drive the classic more! Love Jeeps!
I bought an 08 Grand Cherokee at the same time that I bought the 01 Sport. I baely ever drive the Grand and plan to sell it and get another older model Cherokee sport. I love those things.
I know exactly what you mean 😀
you have the best channel on the net
paul saddler Thank you Paul, I appreciate that.
I enjoy watching some of these “old” videos😊
Hi there. i really enjoyed your videos especially the one ypu build the cooler cabinet. It fasinating that there is so much we can harness from the mother nature. However this can only happen in places that have 4 seasons just like the one featured in your videos.Well not for my case where i live in , where there is no winter .. all we'll get over here in this part of the globe is either rains or sunshines all year long. Nonetheless... i still really enjoyed and thanks for sharing.
Here in Northern California in the 70's we had no electricity. In the summer we built a box with shelves, on the North side of the house through a window. Built an insulated door. Covered the outside of the box with rabbit wire and then canvas and then burlap. Ran a water hose from the spring water system, to a faucet mounted on the top of the box and let it drip. The water wet the cloth and the heat outside evaporated it. Evaporation causes refrigeration and it stayed in the high 30's, low 40's throughout the summer and warm months.
MsCatiah I have known about the evap systems for a long time but never built one. I will have to give that a try this summer at the NH cabin. Thanks for the reminder.
as always and again, such great videos.
Thank you kindly.
Nice to see you and Frankie back at the cabin! Looks like you got a nice amount of snow there...we haven't gotten much snow down my way yet (just south of Albany).
Only got a few inches of snow but now it's foggy and raining. Frankie and I will be spending most of the winter at the cabin so there shouldn't be any shortage of footage ha ha. Thanks for commenting.
