    I have a bait business here in Alabama and it is getting expensive to buy crickets, I have fooled with crickets before so I am going to start with a 100 and go from there

      DO IT!! You'll get the hang of it and you'll never look back. I would recommend Flukers or Armstrong crickets for starters if you're planning on growing Acheta. Otherwise, Ovipost is another great option for banded crickets.

    Hi Shelby! Super glad I’ve found your page. I’ve been interested in cricket farming for almost a decade and I’m finally taking the leap 😅 my question is, what are the legalities of farming edible crickets, for human consumption? I’ve spoken to a few organizations but they’ve mostly been unhelpful.

      Hi Tiana! Apologies for the late reply. Super cool that you're going for it. Legalities vary state by state and country by country. If you are in the US, I would start at your states department of Ag. Outside of the US, I have no idea where to start unfortunately.

    Hi Shelby, i would like to make small steps on cricket farming. I see future in that area. I have a big question for you if you could answer me, why cricket powder is so... expensive?
    e.g. in europe a kilo(kg) of powder(food) costs about 40 euros(wholesale). Is that price just for marketing reasons or is that the productivity costs are so huge, that raise the sale cost?
    If you say that a kg of powder is a regular price, i have to reconsider farming crickets :)
    Is it possible to make a video with more or less with the main costs(in $) of farming, e.g. electricity, water, feeding, etc per sale unit ? what's the your main cost you have, except you time!! :)

      That’s correct! The one factor that you left out, labor, is one of the larger expenses. It’s a very labor intensive business, which increases cost significantly. As practices become more efficient, the price might come down. Time will tell.

    My 20 year old daughter loves eating crickets. Thinking about helping her getting started cricket farming. If we start small, is it possible to start in the garage? Also, how do you euthanize them for eating? Do you euthanize them before shipping for human consumption?

    • @BuildingInASmallTown
      @BuildingInASmallTown  Год назад +2

      Yes! You can absolutely start in a garage as long as you can keep a space climate controlled. They thrive at about 86/87 degrees.
      We freeze them to kill them. In SE Asia, they rinse them in boiling water to kill them.
      The products we ship are all final products: roasted crickets, cricket powder, or cricket bars. We don't currently offer any fresh/frozen options.
      Hope this helps!

      They might! You should go talk to them and find out where they’re sourcing currently. They might be interested in a more local source.
