Your state biologists studying climate change effects on local wildlife, working to conserve endangered species, restore native plant communities, etc. are paid and equipped largely through hunting licenses and tags. If hunting stopped a lot of conservation work would stop happening. Also deer are largely overpopulated in many areas of the US, for a number of reasons, to the point they prevent forest restoration by eating plants they normally wouldn't. So hunting can actually have benefits for wildlife. In case you are wondering I am a biologist, not a hunter.

Conservation efforts funded by hunting are overstated, even if every US adult bought a hunting permit, it wouldn't come close to the amount of money that is actually spent on conservation - at best it likely pays for the cost of the paperwork to issue the license (a quick google suggests a hunting license costs about $100 depending on the state aka almost no money at all). Plus it's an oxymoron, how do you shoot the thing you want to protect? If you want to protect nature you should be vegan, it's by far the most effect way to reduce the effects of agriculture and you also don't have to eat bugs.

    • @DanClark_ddc
      @DanClark_ddc 3 года назад +3

      You have at least a secure yard, pots, reliable and cheap electricity, and a grow lamp. Not everyone has those things.
      We're trying to eat bugs because, compared to current agribusiness practices, insect agriculture can produce vastly more nutrient and protein product (per unit of input) than any animal agriculture.

    • @blondek767
      @blondek767 3 года назад +4

      Humans survived thousands of years without electricity. Did you know dandelions are edible? It’s a weed. And it’s good for you. Unlike ‘bugs’. Shame to live in a sunless hole, without a pot, to then eat bugs to survive. The Amish live without electricity, or fancy tractors to till the earth. You are right, I have a yard with sunlight. I was smart enough to not poison my dirt with herbicides so I can grow almost anything. Walking thru my grass, I collect dandelion leaves for a fresh salad. In my hayfields, the last week in June, there are wild strawberries...enough to gather for a pie. It’s work, tho. Next I gather wild raspberries and in the end of July, I gather wild blackberries. I freeze them to then use when making pancakes. I also have asparagus, leeks, rhubarb, and apple trees that appear with no work involved. My husband will hunt a deer and a wild turkey every year which I break down the meat to equal many meals. He likes to make jerky, which can be eaten year round. Whoa to those who live in crowded cities, which residents rely on the supply chain for food. Not everyone is a farmer. Too busy working all day to pay for a fancy car and new cellphone and not willing to tend a garden for food. Perhaps these individuals would then eat your bugs. Sorry, but I will not.

      @@blondek767 you seem to be naive but I think it's cause you're rural (not an insult). People unfortunate enough to be in cities can't simply afford to move away. There are tons of factors and while I do find eating bugs to be unappealing I prefer the facts/science and it's clear that bugs are more efficient and better for the environment than the current livestock factory farming. That's not a dig on your hunting/gathering as that's far better than factory.
      There's something terribly wrong with our current mass production of everything and while I think it needs improvement bugs used as feed for livestock or as livestock themselves is the future.

      @@blondek767 Bugs are mainly for an alternative to animal-based proteins. The amount of meat people eat worldwide has risen significantly, because it’s gotten so much cheaper because of the industrialisation and upscaling of agriculture. That’s awful for the enviromment, especially because how much space is required to produce the feed for all those animals. Bugs are a good alternative, a very efficient source of proteins. People in many countries eat bugs, and I have cooked with bugs in the past too. It’s something of an acquired taste, but you can hide the taste entirely behind spices.

    • @blondek767
      @blondek767 Год назад +1

      There is a shocking amount of open space between cities, the idea we are so over crowded people cannot eat is a LIE. Maybe to those who choose to live in a city it seems over crowded but that’s by design. The entire world population can fit in the State of Texas with room to spare. We are not over crowded, we have been pushed into cities and are slaves to wi-fi and our cellphones. Has anyone here ever picked a fresh apple from a tree? I can’t believe you are ok with eating BUGS. Give me that rib-eye with a side of guac. and a nice slice of apple pie. With the crust made with lard like my grandma used to make. Why is Vice releasing videos about edible insect factories this week when 145 people have died in Gaza and in the West Bank? When 39 of those deaths were children? There hasn't been a single video covering what it means now that human rights organizations have called Israel an apartheid state, but yet there's been reports about non-issue fluff like this during forcible removals of people's homes in Sheikh Jarrah and the building of Al Jazeera/AP being destroyed by the IDF. What is going on, Vice?

    Afterwards ... It is entirely possible to see in the future chicken nuggets, ground chicken, whole chicken, and places like KFC to either fold or get astronomically expensive while companies who invested and specialize in insects, will be doing well and reasonably priced in the store.
    Maybe even calling the new insect protein, "Kickin'." Which sounds a little like "chicken" so you could say you had "Kickin' nuggets" for lunch. Someone would nod and understand you had the future food, insects, for lunch, likely large mealworms, which at that time would be considerably easier to acquire and process rather than real chickens.
