I say this as a Brit and with Skyfall as one of my favourite films, in the last 3 years Mission: Impossible has surpassed the Bond series in terms of action, story and quality.
Skyfall and Casino Royale are terrific. I think when they made this latest MI, they definitely took notes from those movies, along with The Dark Knight, which itself took cues from Heat, which borrowed from Point Break. I'm certain Tom Cruise told his directing partner McQuarrie, we're going to put the best parts of these movies together, and they basically followed that blueprint. MI-Fallout is top notch craftsmanship.
Its just a shame that Craig has had such bad production issues behind both QoS and Spectre that made them average at best. Also the McQuarrie Mission Impossibles are so great because those stunt set pieces make it like a spectator sport and give a really unique draw for people to come watch both artistic and 'athletic' excellence in one experience.
Said this to my brother last night. There needs to be a Bond X Mission Impossible crossover. It's too bad Daniel Craig is done with the role. Im sure he wouldfe had great chemistry with Tom Cruise on screen.
I don´t care how much money Black Panther and Infinity War made in the box office. Fallout was the best action film of 2018 and all the scenes were done for real.
Milton Tavares Yea I think it was a great inspiration and helped make the best MI movie yet. That scene where Lark gets oil on his face I said “ oh shit it’s Harvey Dent” 😂
A lot of scenes, but especially this one, right down to the truck going into the water, it was impossible not to think of The Dark Knight. Although this is a great movie in it’s own right, it was inspired by The Dark Knight for sure.
Love how he says “we’ll burn that bridge when we get to it” rather than “we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it”, so indicative of Ethan’s character and how he feels about the situation.
i like the scene of the original plan in which Ethan kills a cop to hide his identity. That scene brings the character of Ethan Hunt to the next level. He is the one who values one single innocent life as much as a million.
I think the point is hunt is not a bad guy developing his character doesn’t have to make him murder innocent people.. to me it would’ve been dark and weird to see him go with the original plan of no witnesses
No, that's the whole point of the character. Much like what Alec Baldwin's character said, there is a deep flaw within him that will NEVER allow him to make that call; to sacrifice someone for his own goals. That's why the world needs him.
Trung Bui It’s like how, no matter under what circumstances, Batman WILL NOT kill people. It makes for an interesting story when a character has a code that they will never break at any cost. For Batman, he would never kill no matter how much the villains deserve it. For Ethan Hunt, he will NEVER sacrifice a single life just to save many. If there is a possible way to save everyone, then he’d do it, no matter how much dangerous it is to him. That’s just who he is.
I used to work for an in-flight entertainment company and one of my jobs was to watch through films and give timestamps for moments of violence etc. A big one being any mention of flights crashing, or hostage situations etc.
This one reminds me of both the Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises. McQuarrie's directing style is genius. Rogue Nation's directing style was Hitchcockian like which was really cool. Nothing but praise for McQ.

Just curious if anyone else noticed this. But one of the many things that so amazed me about this scene is the continuity. I had Google Maps set on the building with the helipad and was pleased to find out that the route from that building to the ambush was real. Meaning that the route the convoy took tracked from the driveway all the way to where Ethan intercepted them. Beyond that all the details were there. For instance they "explain" in camera that the helicopter leaves so it tracks as to why the helipad is empty in later parts of the scene. And the helicopter is always pointed in the correct direction relative to it's surroundings in camera. I almost feel like when Ethan sees the approaching helicopter that they were filming Lane's side of that shot at the same time. For those that are curious it's the Pont de Bercy bridge East of Notre Dame on the Seine. In my mind the scene is 99% perfect. The only three potential errors I found (and I'm seriously nitpicking here, but it's just for fun) were: 1. The helicopter's route to the helipad is geographically correct except for the one shot over Lane's shoulder where you see Notre Dame. Technically for that shot the helicopter would be travelling the wrong direction. But a great shot none-the-less. 2. The commuter train over the bridge when the convoy was crossing. It's not perfectly synced up in every shot, but what can you do. It's a commuter train. 3. When Ethan reverses away through the garage after pushing the transport into the water, in reality there was nowhere to go. I point all this out because it seems like usually a filmmaker will choose the landmarks or "epic shots" over this kind of detail in continuity (thinking of the first episode of Amazon's Jack Ryan when Jack was biking to work through DC. It's a completely unrealistic route used more for the glamour shots of landmarks). It's really fun to see someone take the time to care about that level of detail for a great scene like this. Such an excellent movie.
Funny I did the exact same thing mapping it out in google earth, because after visiting Paris and watching this movie i was curious where it was supposed to take place. The shot where the helicopter is flying over Notre Dame is the only unrealistic one, you're right - although to be fair I find it actually realistic that maybe the helicopter would have to circle once or twice before coming in for landing at the designated spot due to airspace concerns/soldiers not ready/typical stuff that inevitably happens with routine military ops/etc. Loved the attention to detail in this scene and like you i was for some reason immediately reminded of the completely UNrealistic part at the beginning of Jack Ryan where his cycling route through DC is just completely nonsensical!

This movie was relentlessly excellent. Hardly a scene turned out the way I expected it too, tables turned about a gazillion and one times, but the story was solid as hell. Just brilliantly plotted and directed. Cannot give enough kudos to the entire cast and crew. Brilliant, brilliant stuff. This scene is just one example of how incredible it is: you get the gradual building of the theme (and the scene is also working on the earlier scene of the path that would follow if Hunt DIDN'T do what he does) and the increasing suspense and tension of what we expect to happen.... and then the rug is pulled out from under us and the score follows suit. I just could not love this movie more. I would say it's impossible for the sequel to top it, but I keep on saying that and they keep on proving me wrong.
Cavil was underrated as hell in this movie. There's some constants in these movies. Like, you go in knowing with full faith Tom Cruise and co are going to kill it, that the stunts and set pieces are going to be suitably unbelievable, that Ethan Hunt will continue to be the living manifestation of destiny, all that good stuff. But it was nice seeing how they executed Cavil's antagonist role. While it wasn't at all hard to spot he'd no doubt be the antagonist, I thought he really did great as a sociopathic, string pulling terrorist. Like how Chris Evans is equally if not, to me, often more incredible and captivating as villains, especially when given scenery to chew on, I feel like playing more antagonists or morally ambiguous characters might help Henry to really showcase the best of his ability as an actor. He's so damn underrated and so many of the projects are on turn out to deviate so heavily from anything that would give him room to work with fully. Like, as much Man of Steel holds it's own special place in my heart and Snyder very often has elements of true genius, that (and even less and less in the sequel DCEU movies) movie didn't exactly allow for Henry to stretch himself as Clark, with characters like Russell Crowe's Jor-El being almost like spokespeople for Clark Kent as opposed to Clark having his own say on the events of the movie and voicing his perspective, which only hurts Henry's chances to convey his understanding of the character. And even worse was The Witcher, with the nonstop changes and diverting away from his Geralt in favour of so many unnecessary changes.
