I am always amazed at how woodworkers all over the world design different tools to accomplish the same thing.. Beautiful piece. And I love the sound of the birds.
Alex, very nice work. I would appreciate any suggestions on minimizing cracking. That log didn’t look completely dry and I noted some cracks around the pith. My work has a lot of what I call “character” due to natural movement and cracking of the wood.
It’s a beautiful piece. I think you should have put CA glue in the pith inside and outside to prevent splitting. I turned a beautiful bowl similar to your project in my early days of turning. I learned the hard way about the pith when it cracked and separated. There is a tremendous amount of pressure at that point. I hope your project holds.
Next. Piece you turn, after your done, turn your rpm up high and hold a piece of steel wool on the lip tilll it gets hot. Will leave a nice burn to accent the piece.
Is that a delta 714 lathe you are using ?? I bought a used one about 3 years ago and immediately blew the clutches out of it , could not locate parts for it , a friend gave me a two hp. 220v. 3 phase motor I bought a converter from Grainger, now I can run variable speed forward and reverse👍, the threads on the spindle are warn to the point I have had order a new spindle for it, think next time I’ll just buy a new lathe to begin with, Delta has sure been no help. Sure hope you have had better luck than I have 🙃
Do you use sanding sealer, any abrasive pastes, shine juice? Just what is your finishing routine? Do you use any super glue to fill in those little cracks?
I about to start learning turning after being a square woodworker for many years. I see load of videos where it seems to me your working on very chunky blanks at the start looks like could be quite challenging until it’s round. So why don’t you guys remove the edges and cut the blank to basic shape say on table or band saw. Before starting to refine on the lathe?

Great work but I would have loved to have seen what it looked like with the live bark edge.

Beautiful bowl for certain. Is there concern those pith cracks will continue to grow as the wood continues to dry?
Hey. The tree is almost dry. The bowl was made a month ago and is still intact.

Looks beautiful, but with the pith still there on the side, aren’t you concerned about future cracking around the pith ?

Very nice. What type of finish did you apply?
