Beautiful images, Simon, especially the pre-dawn one. Side Pike is an amazing little fell, perfect for shooting the pikes. It was one of those mornings when I had gone with my gut instinct and climbed side pike, the light was so good but my photos were no better than decidedly less than average.

Great video Simon, 2 great shots too. My preference is for the first one though. I get what you mean about the extra capabilities of the medium format sensors I shoot the Fuji GFX 50 S myself for landscapes which runs the same, allegedly, sensor as the Pentax but in mirrorless form.
Ooooh Pentax vs Fuji; let's not get into that one :-) Hope you are enjoying the Fuji! Medium format is really good once you get past the reduced DOF. My preference is for the first image as well! I would have been happy with the second though had that been all I had taken. Thanks for your comment.
You're right of course, and all the colours do look quite natural there. I actually kind of liked the haze sitting in the valley in the first shot. As you said though, it's quite bad in the second one.
Excellent Simon - you’ve definitely influenced me in terms of valuing quality over quantity, I continue to appreciate the care you take over your images :-)
Thanks David. I do go to places without planning but I still stick to the one shot once I find a composition. Hi Simon. I did a similar exercise for sunrise on Catbells last Tuesday and only saw two people all morning ! I went to Ashness Bridge after the sun was lighting up Skiddaw so that I could shoot the bridge with the hills behind. I shoot lots of panos and wonder whether it would be a worthwhile investment? Top quality video as usual Simon. Really enjoying your channel. Many thanks for sharing.
Hi Tim. I only notice the nodal rail difference when stitching images made with the shorter focal length lenses. It's not an exact science though as I position the lens only roughly where I think it should be (centre of the lens) and it seems to work. If I had a choice, I wouldn't be without it. Thank you Simon. Beautiful images. I would be interested to know how much cropping was needed to eliminate the blank areas of the pano and did you need "content aware"?
Hi Nick, ordinarily not a lot with the nodal rail attached but I did a very long sweep on this occasion so the stitched RAW file has quite a dip in the middle. Imagine a slight smily face! The corners are just cropped out so no content aware is needed.
Regarding your comment about the 645Z. Not to go into too much gear geekery, but the Sony A7riii matches the 645Z in DR - and both have 3 stops more DR than the Canon 1Dx. Unless one needs the 645z 51MP vs 42MP resolution, the A7Riii is a force to reckon with. I personally use the Pentax K1, so not a Sony shill ;) It definitely was a revelation for me switching to a modern sensor camera, like you said. "Oh you can actually do that?!" :D Personally, when I am out in a new-ish area, then I try to be out for the day - if I have the chance, explore the area, hike a bit, maybe visit National Trust places... But if I am somewhere I already know, then I might pack up as well after a certain point.
Thanks for your comment and your kind steer on other options. I will try to reply without sounding ungrateful! The Sony was not something that appealed to me... and I know this is going to sound contradictory but I can't help but gravitate towards lager cameras. I also don't like the OVF on any current mirrorless cameras, as I still use the viewfinder most of the time to find my framing. I'm prepared to give this time until I cannot see a discernible difference from the OFV's that I love so much! I agree that the Sony matches the Z in dynamic range but the pixels on the Z have room to breathe and that makes a difference on a very large print. I did go for a look around after the film but it was scouting. I think the point I was making was that it was the end of the film and nothing I would find beyond the morning would be worth shooting. As it happened I went to a National Trust site.
@@SimonBoothPhotography No worries, I understand what you mean, the K1 is (for me, for now) that combination of a sturdy brick with a great viewfinder, while the K1 liveview and tilting screen helps on the tripod. In the end it's good that we have so many excellent options that cover our techy and more philosophical needs :) Ah, that is great you had a nice second half of the day, I guess it makes sense that you were referring strictly to the video and "main event" so to say!
I would like to try the Sony, only out of nosiness. Dynamic range is a really weird one as i, in a previous video, shot with both, mynown Pentax 645Z as well as the GFX50S. Whilst both cameras have the same dynamic range and pixel count - the Pentax rendered the shadow details better than the similar sensored FUJIFILM, where the Fuji shadows stared to disintegrate when pushed. The same exercise with the Sony would be an interesting one! = )
It's a different mindset, as you can't see them through the viewfinder, which some find difficult. You either see them or you don't, but I say try them anyway and develop your thinking! Mid range lenses offer much better depth to the image but the scenes are harder to pull off. Conversely, long lenses are easier to work with but the scenes lack depth.
I use YR weather www.yr.no/place/United_Kingdom/England/Ambleside/ But you have to go to the section marked hour by hour and then select detailed. This also gives you fog potential in percentage terms. Skippy skies is the other one I use and is good for checking the cloud levels countrywide so you can see where the sun is rising and the likelyhood of the local forecast coming good and not being hindered by clouds on the horizon.
Even more interesting in that some of the pink was removed to make it more believable. The atmospheric particles did something very odd to the light that that morning. When the pink is removed entirely in post, it looks like a mid-day shot.
@@SimonBoothPhotography I was there on Thursday evening and the light was difficult with cloud pouring off the Crinkles, the Pentax must be getting popular with two other Togs using them.
Rambling Tog Where they using the medium format Pentax? I for one can say that it’s quality is seemingly unrivalled from the file comparisons I’ve made. However, if hiking is your thing, this camera and its lenses are a no no!
Hi Danny I just commented on your film. It was interesting to see the film to think I was just the other side of the hill. Your comment was a funny one Paul. My partner Ruth wondered if anyone would comment on her map of the world. You are the only one so far that has :-D
Wow !! 5:37
Thanks John
Regarding your comment about the 645Z. Not to go into too much gear geekery, but the Sony A7riii matches the 645Z in DR - and both have 3 stops more DR than the Canon 1Dx.
Unless one needs the 645z 51MP vs 42MP resolution, the A7Riii is a force to reckon with. I personally use the Pentax K1, so not a Sony shill ;)
It definitely was a revelation for me switching to a modern sensor camera, like you said. "Oh you can actually do that?!" :D
Personally, when I am out in a new-ish area, then I try to be out for the day - if I have the chance, explore the area, hike a bit, maybe visit National Trust places...
In the end it's good that we have so many excellent options that cover our techy and more philosophical needs :)
Ah, that is great you had a nice second half of the day, I guess it makes sense that you were referring strictly to the video and "main event" so to say!
Lovely work Simon. Definitely worth the hike. Assuming these were shot from Side Pike/ Lingmoor?
Thanks James. Yes, from Side Pike. You would have run up it!
The detail is even obvious viewing on the iPad Simon...
It's a wonderful camera Ian. I don't want to poo poo 35mm but it's really nice to work with.
Us lovely pano. I need to start doing more better panos
Just wondering. How did you know high clouds were forecast for the next day Simon?
Clear outside is a good app to use for that, it shows alot of info=)
Thank you @@TheNeffen
I use YR weather www.yr.no/place/United_Kingdom/England/Ambleside/ But you have to go to the section marked hour by hour and then select detailed. This also gives you fog potential in percentage terms. Skippy skies is the other one I use and is good for checking the cloud levels countrywide so you can see where the sun is rising and the likelyhood of the local forecast coming good and not being hindered by clouds on the horizon.
Enjoyed it? very much so.
Interesting stuff, for me it looks a bit too Pink but each to their own.
Hey Simon,I was shooting the langdales the same day from lingmoor fell. That haze was pretty annoying.chevk out my vlog on my channel please.
Hi Danny
I just commented on your film. It was interesting to see the film to think I was just the other side of the hill. When I started my vlogging journey, my first practice sessions were on my phone and I held it vertical like you did. It certainly would help if you turned it landscape format during filming, but you probably know this now anyway!
