This movie and the sequel are hands down, the best martial arts action movies. AND the first movie made by this director-fight team, "Merantau", is another hidden gem.
The martial art used in this movie is called "Silat". A lot of school kids in Indonesia, Malaysia, & Brunei learn this martial art. It is not impossible for most people in that building know how to fight like that.
Me & my brother went to the screening for this before it came out. The writer / director Gareth Evans was there & had a Q&A after. He said with the fights, they were really hitting each other to the body. No headshots though.
Also, Iko Uwais (Rama) & Yayan Ruhian (Mad Dog) both worked on the fight choreography. They’re both master practitioners of the Indonesian martial art called Silat.
Yes, those whom practice this martial art have done some sort of trainning of combat. They have done this for various functions, like weddings, etc. Yes, they hit but usually without full force. Furthermore most of the stun actors have simillar or same martial art (of different branches). They know what to do, furthermore yayan & iko are sifus.
He's a "pencak silat" athlete, "pencak silat" is a martial art from Indonesia, And he himself choreographed the fight in this film 🤷♂️ Next 🙏🏻 reacting to THE RAID 2, Because THE RAID 2 is a continuation of the storyline of this film
Not only this has some most amazing fight scenes and choreographs ever. Film maker's didn't do Hollywood style censoring. Every knife hit was aimed for kill / cripple spot unlike most Hollywood action films they mostly (with few exception) either censor hits, or show stabbing in location etc that is not dangerous in short term. These all in here... just for to kill or cripple. Its quite amazing.
The final fight against Mad Dog, iirc, took two weeks to shoot. Hollywood doesn't want to "waste" that kind of time, they want to wrap it up as fast as possible so they can make money and move on to the next project... the result are lame fight scenes with fast cuts and shaky camera, to hide poor choreography and sloppy execution. That's why movies like The Raid are so good, they actually put in the time and effort instead of rushing and halfassing
I like the way you react on this my fav movie, it's so natural and not too much like the other guys did, and you explain the scenes, the editing, etc. keep up guys!!

Great to see you both enjoying this masterpiece of a martial action movie. The punches/kicks you've seen in this movie mostly were direct hit. The actors (Yes the actors can fight here) and stuntments had to learn how to slow down their hit when it close to touch their partner so it wont hurt that much during the filming of the fight scene. At the time for the practice or choreo making they went to build like trust to each other so whenever one hit a bit too hard they wont hit their partner back. Would love to see ya guys watch the sequel cuz its a whole lot better than this movie in almost every way

Some of the music, IMO, sounds a bit like Terminator. There is no Raid 3 and the director moved on from the idea and even said Rama would only have had a minor role in it, anyway, and the story would've focused on something else. From what I read online, there is a Japanese movie called "Re:Born" (I never saw it) that comes very close to what we could've seen in The Raid 3 with the style being very similar to The Raid movies. Iko Uwais is also in Mile 22 (great, underrated movie, IMO), Expendables 4, Headshot, The Night Comes For Us, Triple Threat, Stuber, Beyond Skyline. In my opinion, Dredd (with Karl Urban) is like the americanized version of The Raid & Extraction 2 (with Chris Hemsworth) is like the americanized version of The Raid 2, just less graphical. There was supposed to an american remake of The Raid, but last I heard, I think it was canceled (either canceled or changed into something else). If true, I think that is for the best. They all wanted to introduce Silat as a martial art that existed hundreds of years ago in Southeast Asia (Indonesia). If Americans (Hollywood) saw that Kungfu/Karate/Taekwondo was great and big like the vastness of the ocean, I would say that Silat is the Ocean. So when Gareth (England) took the film The Raid internationally, many fans of Hollywood martial arts films were shocked! The new world was introduced to Kungfu/karate etc. because the country of origin was already advanced and controlled cinema. However, for several European countries such as the Netherlands/France/England, the older generation already knows and feels the bitterness of Silat, because they have already set foot in Indonesia. And silat schools also exist in the countries mentioned above, although they are not widespread, because silat techniques are difficult to adapt to the world of sports. The Mad Dog and the Assassin in the The Raid 2, are the pair who fight with John Wick in the third movie. And they (John Wick and both of them) were end up alive after their fight end.
This movie was incredible, everything about it was fantastic. Unfortunately it also came out around the time another movie, with a similar concept came out - 'Dredd 2012' with Karl Urban. Dredd was about the most PERFECT action movie Ive ever seen, but it didnt do well at the boxoffice cause The Raid got more publicity and I think, if Im remembering this right, The Raid was released in western theatres before. But yeah, Dredd 2012, wow, Karl Urban, Lena Heady (Cersei), penned and directed by Alex Garland (The Island, Annihilation, 28 Days Later), like I said is about the most PERFECT action movie, heart pounding, exhilarating, great story, acting, everything, just everything. Hope you guys put it on your list or your patreon poll or however you guys choose your movies The Mad Dog fights, wow, just wow
Well Yayan said mad dog character can beat anybody. Everybody in the Raid knew Yayan is the best fighter he is indonesian president special forces and military forces combat master for President Soeharto 5 star Fleet General military forces. But your opinion not really wrong.
@@nsb7609 we're not discussing the actors but characters and what the film established. Mad Dog struggled in his fight with the Captain despite winning and it's pretty clear that Rama is a much better fighter than the Captain. Adding to that the ppl he had to take out floor to floor, injuries he sustained along the way and exhaustion. It's quite clear Rama would win, not easily of course. The sequel film pretty much cements this as well
@@gemelwalters2942 like i said Yayan said in interview! mad dog Character have confident on hes skill he can beat any body. Not to brag ...well a bit..😂. In countries like indoniesa and malaysia , many of us grow up learning our traditional martial arts (silat). So the fact that all the bad guys can also fight isnt that far fetched. 🙂

Right? It looks weightless until he makes contact, then it’s like a hammer
The Raid is Terminator. The Raid 2 is Terminator 2.
Pretty solid comparison, not gonna lie
Well put
He could just said "good choreography" to make it simple.
So perfectly put. I saw Raid 2 in cinemas when it came out and left the cinema totally blown away like everyone else. Absolute crazy action!

I have seen Dredd 2012 and yeah it's pretty amazing! I don't think Madison has seen it though, so it could be fun to revisit it with her.
@@MACReact and don't forget to react to the films Crow Zero 1 and 2
Mad Dog was great but remember Rama just fought the whole building so he was worn out. I'm sure 1v1 Rama could take him.
Rama can survive after all of that because he is main Character he got plot armor ma guy. And you forget mad dog is already beat Jaka dagu and Wahyu in split second but he not want to shoot Jaka and give another chance to fight and director want make realistic fight about penchak silat master vs judo master

THE RAID 2 (the berandal) : is very very epic
good reaction and comment,, can't wait for you to wacth raid 2
The best hand-fight movie ever....
Not to brag ...well a bit..😂. In countries like indoniesa and malaysia , many of us grow up learning our traditional martial arts (silat). So the fact that all the bad guys can also fight isnt that far fetched. 🙂
