The fact is, post WWII, Germany emerged debt free with the Marshall Plan to rebuild its industry and expand its exports. Britain was lumbered with its war debts, largely to the U.S., which took decades to repay and starved the country of investment. That's a big part of the reason Germany is the economic powerhouse of Europe. The old joke was "to improve the economy, try to find a reason to fight a short war with the U.S. and lose".
No but it perfectly sums up the gung-ho attitude at the start of the war when this song was written. Britons initially thought it was a war of honour - like those in days past - where their duty was to protect an ally from its invader. But after the Scarborough Shelling, sinking of the Lusitania, and the Rape of Belgium, the war suddenly became one of self defence against a force of pure evil. By 1915, Germans were thoroughly hated and as you can guess, there was no Christmas Truce that year.
The war that song was made for is why, in my opinion. It was the result of incompetent leaders colliding with a difficult political situation, and so people lost confidence in the institutions, especially in the defeated countries.
So sad to see my country reduced to a nation where out own people are a minority in our own capital city. Gdp is small. The ex colonised absolutely bankrupted and stunted by us not being there. Out economy bust. Out culture reduced to pure degeneracy. Will you fellow patriots join me in retaking a British Britain?
I think one of the reasons why nationalism hasn't stuck in Britain (among other things) is forgetting their patriotic songs. And that they weren't really catchy. Listen to the Farewell of Slavianka, or Preussenlied, or March on the Drina. A catchy melody will make it become a household tune, and patriotic music is transferred from one proud generation to another. Apart from Rule Britannia (hard to sing), I haven't seen many British patriotic songs, relative to their sheer size as a people.
Englishmen still sing Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory, God Save the Queen and Rule Britannia with vigor. They congregate every year in the tens of thousands in and around the Royal Albert Hall to sing them. You don't see any Germans singing "Die Wacht am Rhein" or any patriotic songs today.
I think the main thing is white guilt. Every powerful country today did some horrific shit in the past. And we’ve been the countries that have had the most privileged people in the world. A lot of people just feel bad about it, not to mention lots of integration. It’s kinda hard to sing nationalistic songs that you’re ancestors sung while enslaving someone of the same ethnicity to the person next to you.

As an American. I must say that after listening to this song. I immediately started listening to “Over There”. I’m also sure this British song was played again during WWII, just like “Over There “ was?…
I believe “It’s a long way to Tipperary” and “We’ll never let the old flag fall” were reused in WW2. But this song illustrates very much the jingoism and misunderstanding of modern war the country had in 1914, seeing it as a gentleman’s battle of valour. By 1916 it was seen much more as a war for survival against a powerful foe and the monumental death toll meant expressions like “they are gladly dying” were no longer acceptable. Certainly in WW2 such expressions were unacceptable even though in many cases - notably in the case of RAF pilots who found exhilaration in their duties despite the extreme risk of death - it was true. “Over there” is a bit like this song in its jingoism and presentation of war. But US casualties were sufficiently low in WW1 compared to British that it didn’t lose favour.
@@dertery8724 Yes. Because the US did enter the war until the middle or end of 1917, when Lusitania was sunk. Then the Doughboys came to assist the Tommy’s and the French. I've heard this song for the very first time. They really had jingoism perfected in those days, didn't they? Made the blood and slaughter of combat sound almost appealing.
@Ben a fellow lindybeige enjoyer i see Truly, men back then saw war often as an opportunity to archieve wealth and fame rather than just meaningless bloodshed
I very much doubt it! For one thing it was written when those fighting were volunteers to glorify their sacrifice. Once conscription had been brought in in 1916, a song like this was no longer relevant. Also once the deaths tallied up, the idea that relatives had died gladly ‘just to keep the old flag flying’ would have been seen as an insult.
Honestly I agree with you but I think there's a beautiful thing in the way they went about going to war and saw death in it, a faithfulness that we are never going to see again in the western world and that perished on the world wars Germany caused ( cursed be Germany) .
@@herondonizeteribeiro1006tf are you talking about WW1 wasn't Germany's fault infact kaiser wilhelm II tried to prevent WW1 from happening and WW2 was literally the fault of the so called victorious powers of WW1 with their threathy of versailles wich threated Germany far to harsh for something they didn't even start

Absolute bop, 5th period is going bonkers right now. Turnt!!!!!!!AF. lolz
Her: He is probably out cheating on me Me with the bois:
I've heard this song for the very first time. They really had jingoism perfected in those days, didn't they? Made the blood and slaughter of combat sound almost appealing.
@Ben a fellow lindybeige enjoyer i see
Truly, men back then saw war often as an opportunity to archieve wealth and fame rather than just meaningless bloodshed
I like that song, It makes me want to fight for UK even if I am from the Philippines. But I love my nation, of course.
*By order of the Jarl, stop right there!*
I'm the jarls Thane bitch
I'd rather die then go to prison!
"Faendal, you know what to do"
woop someone else has uploaded this :)
God Save The King. Long Live The King.
I wonder if this was still popular by 1918.
TFW you waste an entire generation’s lives for nothing more than political power
Humans are more valuable than anything else on this Earth, and it’s disgusting how the First World War wasted them.
Well, if wasn't the WW1, the world would be totally diferent. But we can't deny those soldiers died for nothing.
Honestly I agree with you but I think there's a beautiful thing in the way they went about going to war and saw death in it, a faithfulness that we are never going to see again in the western world and that perished on the world wars Germany caused ( cursed be Germany) .
@@herondonizeteribeiro1006tf are you talking about WW1 wasn't Germany's fault infact kaiser wilhelm II tried to prevent WW1 from happening
and WW2 was literally the fault of the so called victorious powers of WW1 with their threathy of versailles wich threated Germany far to harsh for something they didn't even start
So rare that it is on youtube for all to hear

Do you have it on Spotify
Adding this to the Kaiserreich playlist-
I like this music
God save the king huzzah!
He looks a bit like Stephen Fry
Long live my gracious King.
By the real King. To my soldiers around the world.
I want to add this to my spotify playlist, but I can't find it :(
Perfection
We Must Recolonize!
hahaha no
Make Hong Kong British Again!
The empire was stupidity expensive to run, the economy would just snap if colonisation was to come back
@@ethanedwards422 It lasted hundreds of years and only collapsed after tens of millions died in a Second World War. Colonisation is completely fine for the economy.

Is that god save the king/queen at 2:24 ?
Yes
my great great grandad came to this great country in ww1 from italy
RuLE Britannia 🇬🇧 🇬🇧
Why was France not making this music during this war
I like the part of the instrumental where it sounds like British Grenadiers
I think they would fight side by side with the men of the Kaiser now, if they just saw what their country and empire degraded into.
@@calum5975 I meant that they would be pretty angry about their once great empire being reduced to a small island again, that's struggling to get out of a voluntary confederation despite once being a even bigger one. And I of course am talking about the pc culture infesting all of western culture, if you're wondering what I mean just look what doctor who was turned into. I strongly believe that they, just as the soldiers of WW2, wouldn't want to go, fight and die for that their country is now Anymore.
@@durinderunsterbliche6472 PC Culture?
@@gael.7593 Political correctness. Found with one Google search. For prime examples just look (as I said) at what doctor who has degenerated into, or at the diversity and inclusion strategy of the BBC.
