in WV on 4/5/2010, there was an explosion (caused by excessive methane buildup) at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch Mine. It happened about 1000ft underground with 31 workers there at the time. Initially, it was reported "25 Dead, 4 Unaccounted for,, 2 escaped" but after 4 days of rescue attempts, it was realized all the remaining 29 had perished. Massey Energy had a long history of safety violations (over 3000 violations for over $2.2Mil in fines in 15 years), but a corrupt system in which judges and political allies were paid off allowed them to keep operating...and still does.
The explosion ignited from an unknown source with methane levels being a major contributing factor. Twenty-five men were initially identified as killed. Four days later, four missing men were found dead for a total of 29 deaths. Massey Energy was faulted for failure to properly maintain its ventilation systems, which allowed methane levels to increase to dangerous amounts. Initially miners had died with more than a dozen unaccounted for. 21 miners were injured during the blast. Emergency response teams were dispatched, including over 20 ambulances and three helicopters. Massey said the mine was equipped with rescue chambers. The two safety chambers in the mine were inflatable units with air, water, sanitary facilities, and food sufficient to support more than a dozen miners for about four days; they could possibly support four miners for no longer than 96 hours, only IF any miners managed to reach a chamber after the blast. 7 bodies were recovered from the mine on the first day. One survivor said he first felt a rush of air, followed by a blast of hurricane-force winds. Then flying debris as he escaped the mine. The blast was heard and felt for miles. Another miner said when it happened, "it was just like your ears stopped up, you couldn't hear" and it was like being in the middle of a tornado. Rail lines were twisted like pretzels according to rescue workers, and mining machines were blown to pieces. Massey energy paid around 200 million in damages as a result, with multiple cases still pending. #neverforget
I live close to UBB, you could see the smoke from the mines on my front porch, I even worked at Marsh Fork Elementary (the school the press briefings were delivered from). After the explosion everyone blamed Don Blankenship because he promoted a work environment where production was valued over safety. My husband worked at UBB a few months before the explosion, thank god he got a job at a different mines and left. The FBI came to our house four different times to talk to my husband but he didn’t have anything to say about Massey that could be proven. Now people talk about Massey and Don Blankenship like they were wonderful to work for and that they were the fall guys for Obama and his mining policies. It’s sad to see the lengths people will go out of desperation to hang on to a dying way of life. I’m still waiting on Trump to turn everything around.
