I’d like to think that this is a sequel to Fly Me to the Moon when Frank Sinatra realizes living on the moon isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and decides to get totally wasted.
I'd like to think Misato Katsuragi puts this on at the karaoke bar at the end of the world, eyes full of tears, kicking her heels off, blisters bleeding, and alternately mumbling and screaming the entire time
I got drunk in a bar in New Jersey just after my girl friend text me to tell me that she's finished with me. I sat drinking and started chatting to a guy with an English accent. We had a good time. I bought all the drinks as I remember. I left alone drunk. A couple of days later I went back to the same bar and stood in the same place as previous and realised I had been talking to a full-length mirror.
Well, if she did not even took the trouble to tell you in person, but ended your relationship with a text message, she was not worth your hangover, so I hope you had at least a good time.....
...some Bonneville is screaming... Tarts mutter their dream hopes... I hocked all my yesterdays, don't try and change my tune I thought I heard a saxophone...
My boyfriend kissed me for the first time, while this song was playing. He closed my eyes and did it.. whenever i hear this song i remember that moment..

Could be: 1. You don't listen that much of jazz and subconsciously connect this song with popular christmas jazz songs 2. Some changes remind you of christmas song 3. Idk tbh
@@NBass136 well it's definitely not #1. My Dad is a huge Jazz fan and always played it when I was young. I think it's just the ~vibe~ the song has. Thanks anyways though
Hmmm I get this too. I would say because the brush drums and double bass sound similar to the way they do on Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time is Here" off the Charlie Brown Christmas Soundtrack
Met a girl the other night who was into jazz and blues. Slipped some Tom Waits into the turn table to set the mood then slipped my.... the rest is history. Cheers to Tom for a lot of good evenings and possibly a few kids I'll never find out about. What a genius bastard.
Coming back from work yesterday, a cold November evening. I was in the bus as always, observing the dark sky and the beautiful sunset of the Cheshire countryside listening to this song. I almost cried.. It was a beautiful feeling.

Went to see Zappa and the Mothers some time around 1975. Surprise warm up act was Tom Waits. I had never heard of him before, but left the concert a big fan. Nice surprise! Thanks, Frank. :)
There is no mood this man cannot set with a song. Such a magical gift, to be able to take you anywhere in the world, and put you in some smoky bar, or on a warship, or in a graveyard,or a Cuban jail without having ever met you. It is beyond music, its fucking magic.
One night in Heidelberg I was so drunk I lost my friends. I was alone with a beer for a long time talking to other Americans where I found them. The streets were as nostalgically cobbled as this song. Tom Waits is so goddam real that I don't know why i don't have all his LPs. Every time I hear one of his songs it strikes a memory of days of cigarettes and mirrors and straws. One of my friends woke up in a train car in Dusseldorf with his head pounding like Khrushchev's shoe on a U.N. desk.
Frank got drunk one night and wandered out on the streets of Heidelberg He spent a long time alone that night, nothing but a bottle to keep him warm. Frank lost his friends so he would speak to anyone and to nobody at all And the cobblestones reflected his situation Frank woke up with his head pounding like Kruschev's shoe on a UN desk
Found myself on the bottom once again, hit the bottle just like everyday. Mmm, in a row. Can't change my tune, haven't seen the sun in June - Livin' in Holland isn't that great. Letting myself go, I like the ways - Rock & roll. Being drunk is the best thing ever. I'll never be clever.
It seems that people think that Tom Waits makes the ultimate drinking music. To me, his music is like alcohol. So I don't need a drink to feel the buzz when I have Toms music.
When you listen to his songs, you realize that there is another such poor fellow and sufferer, who feels life and its cares in the same way. It's out of the rules, it's out of politics, it's out of any crises and wars. What he does is eternal and essential. Tom waits, live happily ever after! Don't stop! Drink your Scotch, smoke your cigarette and just sit in this chair and look into the distance! You are loved! I need you! Without you, this old world will be unbearable..
I have always admired musicians that know what they got and know how to use it...at one time time he had a smooth Drunk On The Moon voice and later a gritty Small Change voice....he makes the most of both.
I have a soundboard recording -- absolutely gem quality -- of a Tom Waits concert from 1977 in Willimantic CT that was supposed to have been broadcast on the radio and never was. I copied the tape from a radio station I worked at in 1977. It is, far and away, the best concert he ever gave, and I have heard a lot of his concerts. He told little stories in between each song and each one was hysterical. I have the concert on two cassette tapes. I must upload it some day.

Possibly my favourite song of all time. I'm very careful to only listen to it about three times a year, though. I don't want to get sick of this song.
Yeah, it's like a Charlie Brown Christmas on the dark side of the moon.
The Naked Ant I've listened to this all year. late at night in my car after gigs. wether I'm going home or not
The Naked Ant you are so right;-)
The Naked Ant You have your head together my friend.
The Naked Ant I already listened to it like 10 times in one day 😰😰😰😰
"the moon's a silver slipper, it's pouring champagne stars" that's such a gorgeous lyric, wow.
Agree...
Never heard this song before: scrolled down to your comment and read the words *as he was singing them.*
All his songs are pure lyrical poetry

Fuuuuuuuuck what a wonderful memory. Thanks for sharing it with us..
That’s beautiful
he closed your eyes for you? wth
That's actually really wonderful. I needed that in this time of grey. Thank you.
So cute 💙

this man makes you polish off the bottle you shouldn't of at 230am on a Monday and not regret it.
i don't think I've ever read a more accurate comment lmao
True true
Just red this comment, right after a bottle i shouldnt have finished
The accuracy is depressing. Cheers
I wouldnt regret it anyway.
Perfect song before closing a bar
Tom Waits have a song for every moment
Nicely said
would fucking love this, .... as the people slowly leave and we can close in peace.
closing time is the best for closing a bar
I'm drunk in my room, does that count?
Great song by the way
Michel Kuhn The way to be. Cheers.
What else ?
+Michel Kuhn I often get like this. WTF enjoy.
No, you need to be wandering the streets. Oh and yes I have actually done that in the past.
+Michel Kuhn I'm drunk in my room right now too! it's very peaceful with this tune added :)

This song came to mind
Tom Waits and Chet Baker in my headphones under the moon late at night with a smoke. All you need.
Man....the way that we age in front of songs. It's priceless.
You know this song starts playing when you look around in a bar and see a girl that's alone sipping her whiskey neat
Why does your songs always puts me in a good calm mood. Tom Waits, you're a national treasure for sure. 😊
"Drunk On The Moon"
Tight-slacked clad girls on the graveyard shift
'Neath the cement stroll
Catch the midnight drift
Cigar chewing charlie
In that newspaper nest
grifting hot horse tips
On who's running the best
[CHORUS]
And I'm blinded by the neon
Don't try and change my tune
'Cause I thought I heard a saxophone
I'm drunk on the moon
And the moon's a silver slipper
It's pouring champagne stars
Broadway's like a serpent
Pulling shiny top-down cars
Laramer is teeming
With that undulating beat
And some Bonneville is screaming
It's way wilder down the street
[CHORUS]
Hearts flutter and race
The moon's on the wane
Tarts mutter their dream hopes
The night will ordain
Come schemers and dancers
Cherry delight
As a Cleveland-bound Greyhound
And it cuts throught the night
And I've hawked all my yesterdays
Don't try and change my tune
'Cause I thought I heard a saxophone
I'm drunk on the moon
