My Daughter has done many wonderful things, among the most wonderful was allowing me to have this song played for our first dance at her wedding. Yup, stole the scene straight out of the movie. No one had heard the song, and most didn't know who Tom Waits was... and I didn't care one bit. Truly an unforgettable time, one of the top moments of my life.
I love this.... My father died in June of 2010 (coming up on 4 years) and one of the things I wish I had done with him before his passing was dance at my wedding (even though, my marriage didn't withstand the years). What a beautiful memory you have with your daughter, and to such a beautiful, precious and wise song. You are a lucky man.
1st time I heard it I knew that's the only song I'd ever want to dance to on that day, glad someone else thought so and I'm jealous you've had that moment!
my 1st song at my wedding, for the first dance with my wife that is, was Shiny Things. this one was in the mix too and it was a special night of course ;)
This is the song I want to be played at my funeral .. I'm only 17 but I'm sure, sure that Tom Waits already has added so much to my life, I couldn't imagine a life without his music. Thank you Tom!
This guys voice just has something special about it that I can't find the words to describe. Powerful, dark, beautiful, spiritual.. all of those things and much more. Magic
How can any human being create a thing like this? It sounds like it has been there forever, as if it was a present from Earth itself. Too beautiful to put into words. Tom Waits: thank you, sincerely.
"You can never hold back spring" (Lyrics) you can never hold back spring you can be sure I will never stop believing the blushing rose that will climb spring ahead or fall behind winter dreams the same dream every time baby you can never hold back spring even though you've lost your way the world is dreaming dreaming of spring so close your eyes open your heart to the one who's dreaming of you you can never hold back spring remember everything that spring can bring baby you can never hold back spring.
This sweet old woman at burlesque show blew my mind to this song. It was such a sweet song. I held back tears the whole time. She killed it. Happy 420!💃🙏
My wife walked down the aisle to this song (she chose the song). Our wedding was in our backyard and we were our own DJ, so there were many Tom Waits tunes on our playlists. Truly a timeless artist with so much heart!
You can never hold back spring You can be sure that I will never stop believing,The blushing rose will climb, Spring ahead or fall behind, Winter dreams the same dreame every time, Baby you can never hold back spring Even though you've lost your way The world is dreaming, dreaming of spring So close your eyes,Open your heart To one who's dreaming of you and you can never hold back spring Remember everything that spring can bring - You can never hold back spring
Age has nothing to do with appreciation for music. You can be 10 and love Tom Waits or 80 and like Katy Perry. all I know is Tom Waits is brilliant and magical.
You can never hold back spring You can be sure that I will never Stop believing The blushing rose will climb Spring ahead or fall behind Winter dreams the same dream Every time You can never hold back spring Even though you've lost your way The world keeps dreaming of spring So close your eyes Open you heart To one who's dreaming of you You can never hold back spring Baby Remember everything that spring Can bring You can never hold back spring
@silverstartrucker Bob Dylan is 70 years old and Tom Waits is 61, so they are pretty much contemporaries. Bob's first record was released in 1961 and Tom´s fist record, saw light in 72, just a decade later
You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep spring from coming - Pablo Neruda "So close your eyes, open your heart to the one who's dreaming of you...Remember everything that spring can bring"
Pick up Cold Feet, on DVD. It's Tom's biggest role, and he's madly comic and nuts in it. Keith Carradine ,RIp Torn, Sally Kirkland also. It will put a big smile on your face...he was meant to play this guy. And be sure to watch the end credits. It ain't over till it's over.
So many themes in this song. I used as our wedding march song, like the beginning of The Tiger and the Snow. I couldn't help but dream that Tom would show up to play, as he did for Begnini!
The best one ever, ORPHANS - Brawlers, Bawlers, Bastards. Shame he stopped drinking but maybe it was just the piano. Saw him at a small venue in London many moons ago, accompanied by a bottle of bourbon, me not him, though he might have had one too. It was pure magic, have seen all my old heros, Bruce, Shane, Jarvis, Marianne, Patti, Lenny Al Jolson etc etc etc but Mr Waits has got to be the best! Am just about to go down Fannin Street. Met Old Tom Frost in Dublin but that's another story.
I was standing in the room with a broken heart, looking out the window at the sunshine breaking through the branches od trees, and my brother suddenly put on this song...and for no reason at all, tears started falling like 10 seconds into the song. Will never forget that. Too much beauty, Mr. Waits...
It just dawned on me. The most appropriate description of Tom would be "musical deconstructionist." To "de-construct" is a talent held only by those who are able to, first, thoroughly CONSTRUCT! Pollock. Mozart. Warhol. Monet. Coletrane.
Tom Auton brought me here.. if you see this. I love the rain dogs album. My ears have heard it since I was a child. So much so that my heart can sing it to me without the music. This one is beautiful. Thank you 😊 peace.
Man, ***I don't care who you are*** if you have never heard of Tom Waits your life is incomplete, Children should have music classes on Tom (im only twelve myself, and a touchtyping one) but I just wanna tell EVERYONE how great all the music i listen to is just so they can be more publicised cos i listen to LOADS of untouched music by the publicity and want them to have credit
People compare Waits to Bob Dylan but I think he's more like Jimmy Durante, a man who could turn the sand of his vice into honey. This song for example: imagine it covered by Durante: for me it works perfectly.
Wonderful. Tom Waits has been described as a 'white black man'. I know what that means. In a different was, that's me too. First language Swahili, & always was closer to the watu in Tanganyika/ Tanzania than to my 'own' people, the wazungu (white people). My video has original footage.
This wonderful masterpiece seems to me like a magic Hai Kai. That is, MAXIMUM OF INORMATION IN A MINIMUN OF WORDS. Better ask Tom Fucking Genius Waits for the formula!
You can never hold back spring You can be sure that I will never Stop believing The blushing rose will climb Spring ahead or fall behind Winter dreams the same dream Every time You can never hold back spring Even though you've lost your way The world keeps dreaming of spring So close your eyes Open you heart To one who's dreaming of you You can never hold back spring Baby Remember everything that spring Can bring You can never hold back spring
my english is not very good, but i meant that that was a nice story but its fake. it sounds more like an advert on tv of some kind of clothes brandmarck. And apart of that, i think this song is good, but the chords are the same as many many other songs that try and be "unique" as this one... i dont know if im explaining myself properlly, so fuck it x) Nice song tho, waits has an unique voice
@anhelo911 Best comment so far! Most of the others are from silly little boys who I wish not to waste my time replying to, and I'm not a sad old aged hipster or a false prophet, just a 50's beatnik still in awe of Jack Kerouac. One of my favourite Tom songs mentions all the little boys, think it might be Nickel on the Dime or something similar but as Oscar once said, "youth is wasted on the young". As you say, Tom Waits has enriched my life, he'll never know me but does that really matter?
@DrunkenPiano Haha :) I am thirteen now and looking at that comment I was in a bad place hehe that was probably me raging about when I was literally verbally attacked a lot at school. I still love Tom Waits but I am alot different now; I don't cuss nearly half as much, my language is improved too. That isn't me now though but live long Tom Waits!
@alexmortland you're right, he probably doesn't. but it matters when you consider how much of a contribution he has made to popular music in general. whether he wants it or not, he damn well deserves it. they inducted abba for crissakes....fucking abba...then again, maybe i wouldn't want to be inducted after that anyway...
@dcdude171 So, so pleased I made a 15 year old laugh, my granddaughter Jasmine is 14 and she just thinks I'm a total embarrassment and so uncool. One day, when I pop my clogs, she'll realize what a cool Granny she once had. Just hope she enjoys Tom Waits as much as I've done. Love from Granny Di x
This was released last year. But I agree with you---I wish OTHER modern artists would sing good stuff like this instead of crap like "Hollaback Girl" and "Fergalicious" and "Crank Dat"...hold on, "Crank Dat" is all right in an absurd way...but most pop music these days does stink.
One of the most amazing thing we have discovered about Tom Waits' music is that its truly universal. The depth and sincerity that is often missing in so many compositions is in abundance with his. As classical interpreters of all kinds of music we have discovered that Tom Waits' music really does have some kind of magic ingredient that we have latched onto like no other artist. Please enjoy the classical world of Tom Waits...…ruclips.net/p/PLgWraQrAW-abrxZaKRyHuu2YvKvA0mIra

as a soon (????) to be father of the bride, I completely understand you! you are a lucky man, indeed!
1st time I heard it I knew that's the only song I'd ever want to dance to on that day, glad someone else thought so and I'm jealous you've had that moment!

Thank you Music Director indeed! Cool, very cool...

You say that as if he’s dead.

meraviglioso immenso intenso
Tom Waits, puts a movie in my head every time he sings, one of the most descriptive and thought provoking of all song writers, I love him dearly.
wow this is really great!!
So many themes in this song. I used as our wedding march song, like the beginning of The Tiger and the Snow. I couldn't help but dream that Tom would show up to play, as he did for Begnini!

This song is so beautiful. Even though the lyrics are meant to be positive and full of hope, it tears my heart a part...
Mon dieu que c’est beau. Mais que Tom Waits est fort…
@robertobenignifans Was it recorded only for this movie or is it on any of Tom's albums?
It just dawned on me. The most appropriate description of Tom would be "musical deconstructionist." To "de-construct" is a talent held only by those who are able to, first, thoroughly CONSTRUCT! Pollock. Mozart. Warhol. Monet. Coletrane.

"Podrán cortar todas las flores, pero no podrán detener la primavera" (Pablo Neruda)
❤️
There is only 1 thing I don't like about this song: it's too short

I love how it just says "A good song." in the disciption bar.
I had a dream about the one I love and when I woke up I remembered this song... Baby you can never hold back spring.
Coolest hair ever at 00:15...very Lizard Kingish.
People compare Waits to Bob Dylan but I think he's more like Jimmy Durante, a man who could turn the sand of his vice into honey. This song for example: imagine it covered by Durante: for me it works perfectly.
Olvidaste quien fui yo en tu vida pero yo jamás olvidaré quien fuiste en la mía.

Flame up the Casey Jones in my bong. boundary will still be out walking and get it right
He's a poet.
God bless Tom Waits.
I discovered that song with that amazing movie "La tigra e la neve" (the tiger and the snow), which is just as great.
@vatonaught
WalMart Spring, isle 13 over by the cheap shampoo, lather rinse and repeat.
Forget Punxsutawney Phil, he is only a rodent.
First and last song I listen to every day. And all the times in between
Oh' this is real Xmas!. ... beautiful. unlike the lager fuelled yob culture in that goddammed island.
After Rock'n'Roll there is one man, and one man alone that's changed music. Tom Waits. God bless you me old son.
cried too many times to this song, i'm out of tears....
You can never hold back spring
