How Volkswagen revolutionised Diesels, but nobody cared - the GTD.

  • There was a time when Diesel was something to be scoffed at - but when Volkswagen decided to show everybody that Diesel could be so much more, nobody listened. What would happen was a diesel revolution, the likes of which we're slowly losing.

Probably 1Z 90hp engine harness will also fit, because engine in fact has minor difference at injector tips and turbo, n75 valve, pistons/rods etc, but not electrical-wise. (1z from B4 as example, but not from audi 80 b4, pump wiring can differ).

Here in its homeland Germany, the GTDs as well as other early Turbo Diesels sold like sliced bread. Same in France. Main factor was the diesel price - which was / is subsidized in Germany. I had a Passat with the 1.6 TD engine, for its time it was amazing. Very economic, still torquey enough to push the light cars effortless.

Im from the Balkans, the place of Golf mk2s. My dad owned a german poverty spec one for over 20 years before selling it in 2017 to buy another car, still a turbo diesel. That car made 40kw and we woule often joke how the only electrical thing was the headlights. Anyways fast foward to 2021 where I bough my own Golf 2, but this time it was a GTD. Original old type gtd with 5 doors and a sunroof but previous owner put everything from a newer gtd including intercooled 59kw td and CE2 (which surprisingly was done well). Whait, I'm from Portugal, over there on the mk4s we have also the gti tdi wich is the 1.9 150hp pd tdi, then on the mk5 we have the gtd wich is a 2.0 pd170.
Those mk2 GTDs with intercooler and 80hp I had one of them, the pistons are more prone to wear when compared to previous models, I put a k24 turbo from previous models in it and blew it, then I put a tdi with a mechanical pump (for inspection purposes) even with the 1.6 gtd it was an awesome car!!!! It had some overheating problems (wich was solved with tdi models).
My take on the GTD badhe is that it's a high spec car (heated seats parking sensors etc etc) if it was a cheap spec when compared to other brands why wouldn't people get it? After all it should come above other good spec cars since we are in Europe, not to mention that we are in Europe and it will be easier to get parts...

But still many people drive diesels and if you drive ~20k km a year a Diesel is still cheaper even tho you pay double in yearly taxes and even the insurance for diesels is higher
People love Diesels so give them Diesels and just give them a Diesel replacement (there are enough fuels that could replace diesel and it's way easier to replace diesel than petrol)

Just swap the boost pin from a 1.6 and an IC on it and you are knocking at the TDI's HP figure. i Mean it makes sense from VW's point of view it wouldn't look good to sell two cars at the same power figures but at a pretty big price difference

@@427Motorsports they were revolutionary, they were the first proper nippy diesels. As far as I can make out the gtd was just a TD golf with nicer trims/paint colours.

Did you watch the video? The TDI wouldn’t come along for another 10 years after the GTD. the PSA turbo diesels 10 years too.

@@427Motorsports the XUD arrived in 1982, and I haven’t finished watching the video yet, but as I see a mk2 golf in the thumbnail, and production started in 1983 for them. I don’t know what your point is

The 1.5L diesel Golf/Rabbit was out in the late 1970’s. I may be wrong on this but I was of the understanding that Peugeot Talbot first tried the XUD in the Talbot Horizon around 1982 before it went into the Peugeot 305 and Citroen BX.
There was also the Vauxhall Astra/Bedford diesel circa 1984.
My first car was a 1983 Mk 1 1.6 diesel Golf. 50mpg everywhere but slow and noisy. Traded it in 2 years later for a 1988 Peugeot 305 GLD estate. Relatively fast in comparison to the Golf and so much more refined. Owned many Peugeot diesels from 1993 to 2007 but come 2017 I was in a 130 PD AVF Audi A4.
We lived through the best era for diesel cars, good on you for making this video 😊
