My first date with my husband of 40+ years was a ride on a motorcycle and he bought me an ice cream. The next week we went to a movie ( I didn’t order any of the expensive popcorn or candy but brought some candy for both of us I snuck in my purse, and we got a couple burgers afterwards. I was a poor college student and I treated his money as if I were spending my own. Often we just took a ride on the motorcycle and then took a hike in the park. We got married. By then I could afford an expensive dress but ended up using one my friend had bought. We had 300 guests at our reception. We are not into name brand nonsense. Our wedding was a celebration, nit some social event to impress people. We’ve made it this far, we are happy, we’re best friends. By carefully managing our finances, we paid off our mortgage in 22 years instead of 30, we own our vehicles, we sent our kids to private school and saved part of their college money. My wedding ring cost $199, his was $75. I wouldn’t trade my ring for the world. It saddens me to see how shallow especially women have become.

Am I the only one who is old fashioned? Or was I born in the wrong generation? Why does every relationship have to revolve around money or being made of plastic ? This is not 1920 or 30 when courtship was different than today and chivalry died a little and there are no etiquettes that are being followed but back then people did simple activities and actually GET to know one another in a respectful and structured manner. Today's trend of dating is purely transactional, with expectations for financial arrangements complicating genuine connections. I know it changed in the early 50' but damn why are we regressing so much? If people really wanted a real relationship this wouldn't even be a debate about who should be paying or not. I believe in either 50/50 or take turn to pay. Hell a walk in the park would suffice? No wonder any relationship last.. it's all about looks and social norms, and money.
