I used to drum and I can tell you its one of the most satisfying things setting and keeping the beat and making an amazing sound, it was impossible not to at the very least bang your head and make a weird face. just thinking about it makes me want to buy a set.
don’t ever doubt the beautifully crafted instrumentals of modest mouse for even a second!!! two things can be great at once, modest mouse wouldn’t be great without issac’s unique voice but it also would be great without issac’s unique instrumentals either
This morning my 13 year old son made me listen to this one on his headphones, It might have save my life. I was depressed and he could see it. So amazing sometimes how music can speak to your soul.
These guys have a true feel for music and how not only the vocals it's also the guitar work these guys harmonize. It's fantastic and next to Big Head Todd the BEST
Isaac's guitar is not out of tune. That's how they play it live. Listen so every other version on youtube. Or listen to edit the sad parts. The greatest Modest Mouse song ever
This song is and will always be one of my favorites...back then I was in the throws of a horrible methamphetamine addiction and this song gave me hope! Now I'm almost 16 years clean and have 2 beautiful daughters!! God has blessed me and all of us with great music to get us through tough times! If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues and/or substance abuse disorder *PLEASE* seek professional treatment!!
Thanks for the video post. Where else can you find such great indie and rock bands than Seattle? Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Sonic Youth, Modest Mouse... Modest Mouse is in a league of their own. Great authenticity!
Oh yeah, the energy of his performance always outshines everyone else on stage around him... His playing style is much different than Jeremiah's, much tighter and more controlled with lots of rolls, and when he hits that snare drum he hits it HARD. Jeremiah's is much more loose but also very smooth and with lots of fills
I have something to say. I remember I downloaded this exactly video on IRC channel VideoPimp back in 2004. Yes, I’m that old. We used to download videos from IRC channels back then. Loved this album since it was released and I knew it would become a classic. Good news for people who love bad news is timeless.
Nada mejor que una versión en vivo, con sus aciertos y desaciertos...en realidad no lo son, recuerden somos emociones, ese día se les antojó tocar así y quedó perfecto para muchos
Love it for what it is - creative and unique. If you want mainstream then go mainstream and good luck to you. We look for something in the lyrics and the music and we find it with Modest Mouse so the rest of you can really just please yourself.
Am I the only one who thinks the out of tune guitar is what makes this version of the song the best? It's raw and emotional. The flaws are what makes it the best. I would rather listen to this live version any day than the album version.
Imagine listening to modest mouse and thinking that precision technical wizardry was the whole point of it. Everyone bitching about out of tune guitars doesnt understand Modest Mouse and probably never will.
I used to wreak my mate fintos head about how good this song was ...we had emigrated to oz at the time he grew to love the song always said it reminds him of me.... He has since passed now it reminds me of him... 😉
A child paints outside the lines and an professional artist paints outside the lines. One is unskilled the other and giving you a mood and speaks to you. Same with this out of "tune" tune. As a visual artist I know what enormous skill it is make something look amazing AND as if it took you no effort.
+Nathan Pieper I'm an audio engineer, I get what they are doing. They are trying to sound different and out, but that doesn't mean the guitar doesn't sound like shit. There's a reason why the greatest artists in history didn't do this, even avant-garde jazz doesn't do this shit.
fuck you this is indie rock. its not supposed to sound pristine. youre an audio engineer. well im a musician. maybe they just didnt give a fuck whether the guitar was 'in tune' or not maybe they did it on purpose at the end of the day does it really matter? this is a good performance theyve had better and despite their recent output theyre still an amazing band overall (btw modest mouse ARE one of the "greatest artists in history", I know this because theyre MY favorite band)
Maybe they did it on purpose? Ofcourse they did it on purpose, they have ears. But that doesn't mean it's good, just an artistic decision that completely fails in my opinion. I don't need pristine, I just need something to not sound terrible. And good job on your argument for them being one of the greatest in history because they're your favorite band, I've never seen a more solid argument.
Going to see MM in Omaha in November with my 22 yr old daughter... she actually asked me to go to the show! I love that kid. Cept it's definitely not 15 bucks like it was at the Crocodile, in Seattle, in the late 90s!
Modest Mouse is somewhat considered a lowfi band, well at least at the beginning; That's part of the reason i liked their earlier works more, i loved the sound they made; once they went on to make more commercial music, their records sounded better on wax, but they kept that lowfi style in their live performances. This performance was my fav version of Float On for years, and only now I read the comments. I always though that it's some kind of digital detunning effect here, not chorus-like, more like Whammy detune, something like that.
I feel like Modest Mouse didn't want to do this show. Something about their atmosphere while playing just says "shit, man. Things aren't all right right now" (and it would make sense - unexpected and sudden fame, no more Jeremiah [for a short while at least] and many other personal issues regarding Mr. Brock [If you read the Modest Mouse biography "Pretty Good Read" you'll know what I mean].) Also they're from Issaquah, not Seattle. So that right there is cringe inducing. None of them ever even lived in Seattle, just around it. 2003 - 2005 seemed to have been a very awkward and difficult time period for the Mouse. Just look at Isaac's weight gain. Again, that's all just speculation on my part but when they were doing their own thing without record label restrictions, he was a pretty fit, chill guy. The stress of "Good News" could have worn on him. All that being said, I will always love everything Modest Mouse has and ever will put out and none of that was meant to denounce them.
lmao for all you saying the guitar is out of tune, it's not. he's simply using a different tone and over bending certain notes. this is coming from a guitar player btw.
The notes he's playing are out of tune. Whether it's a crap guitar, or an out of tune guitar or his playing is up for debate but not the fact that it's out of tune. A lot of bands that have big hits aren't great at playing live.
Brings back memories. Me and my stoner friends consumed their whole catalog religiously before Good News dropped. I remember the CD leaked and our minds were blown. The band then blew up. All the preppy kids in high school were bumping this when before they were like “wtf kid of music is this???”. Amazing times.
they're just as good live as they are when recorded. the drummer never misses a roll.
Your right that drummer is having fun!
RIP Jeremiah. 🌺 The drummer just passed away.
@Sheryl Simmons this is actually not Jeremiah Green, it's Brnjamin Weikel. Jeremiah Green was absent from the band the year they recorded this album
Tbh they don't sound the same. The guitar sounds way different, lead vocals sounds all jacked up. But thus band rocks!!!
@@thystinkypiggy58that’s what i’m saying lmao
the drummers having the time of his life
Actually in a band called Helio Sequence since then. Amazing dude.
His mouth is open every time he hits the snare.
Well he's in the presence of a musical prodigy.
The reason I’m still watching this
i would be, too. good music. too bad i'm shit at music or i would play some too
I used to drum and I can tell you its one of the most satisfying things setting and keeping the beat and making an amazing sound, it was impossible not to at the very least bang your head and make a weird face. just thinking about it makes me want to buy a set.
He has the coolest voice ever. Without a doubt. The music wouldn't be a quarter as good without him singing it.
don’t ever doubt the beautifully crafted instrumentals of modest mouse for even a second!!! two things can be great at once, modest mouse wouldn’t be great without issac’s unique voice but it also would be great without issac’s unique instrumentals either
The "out-of-tuneness" gives it its eerie feel.
I don't remember it being that much off-key on the studio recording, though.
Anyway, great song!
For everyone complaining about the guitar and isaacs singing, that's just how they played in the day, no professionalism what so ever. And I love it.
They intentionally sounded like complete shit! It's great! Durr!
Incredible... Made me so happy to hear this again
Very nice!
He sounded great and clear here compared to his performance in 2021. Well let’s not forget he’s 46 compared to him being 29 here.
reminds me so much of frank black from pixies
His vocals are still good live. The guitars are " all the way up"
Just as enjoyable as the studio version.
Regardless of how shit the guitar sounds here, this man wrote the riffs to dramamine and teeth like gods shoeshine, he can do what he wants.
Yes, he can. I'm glad to see other people recognize this 😂
Agreed, Man can play how he wants but I'm confused about the alliteration. He was asleep and has bad teeth? Help
Because it’s out of tune?
yah i feel like they tweaked the tone a little
the way he sings is unbelievable, that voice-
so much conviction. ace baby
This morning my 13 year old son made me listen to this one on his headphones, It might have save my life. I was depressed and he could see it. So amazing sometimes how music can speak to your soul.
Life is beautiful bro. Listen how Modest Mouse proves it :)
We'll all float on anyway...float with your chin up.
Now your son is 23 yo
I’m going through a challenging time right now. So I feel this
That's amazing
I love how this album sounds so happy but is by far the angriest and most emotional album they’ll ever release.
I'd say there most emotional work is building nothing out of something
LCW and M&A would like a word
@@isak242my GOD the time I spent with that album as a depressed early 20-something

In 2004, Modest Mouse decided to "Float On"! In 2024 they still do!
been listening to modest mouse for 10 years there amazing. Seen them in concert about 3 times
I love when bands change up stuff live.
It still is amazing. :)

well the way they play it live sounds like garbage.
There's no denying that it sounds bad and out of tune. Electric guitars are tough though
@@neilbeaton9498 I'm not accepting that when so many other bands can sound like their recordings. this is an excuse.
@@cobaltblu4196 yeah it sounds like garbage plain and simple
its flat tuning, its not supposed to be that loud, sound guy didnt listen to the recording first.
man I love how the drummer is enjoying himself!
The funny thing, the year is 2015 as I'm typing this, and Dann is still jamming with that same guitar in Cold War Kids...
Isaac Brock seems like he would fart more than the average person but God bless him.
i don't know why but this is one of the funniest things i've read on a you tube comment ever
Lmfao
I can't read this without giggling
Maxime Dessureault he'll float on

i love how when the riff starts at 0:34, the singer's like "oh crap. we're playing that song?" *backs out of spotlight* "um.....ok gimme a sec"
Probably their best performance of Float On I've ever seen.
what a great song everything from the lyrics to the tune, great album also.one of my favorite cd's.
Amazing performance great artist god bless modest mouse . Long life ALL Band.
An incredible, and wonderful song that touches heart and soul....sounds freakin' excellent!!! The world IS a better place because of it!!!!

fav version of this song, i like how he sings the chorus in this one

That's some really nice drumming and those ghost notes are very spooky!👻
They sound so good live.
As someone who watched bands from the '70s and '80s whose live performances didn't sound anything like the singles, I'll give this a thumbs up.
very nice performance and about how it sounds, it sounds damm well!!!

They are so amazing live.
Seen them last Saturday. The sound went thru my chest I loved it. Thank you for being Modest

I agree, and I think you can tell he's in tune when at the end of several phrases he's hitting a note exactly the same as the rest of the band
I always wondered if the audience knew that was the best live performance ever.
1:19 - 1:40 gives off some absolutely magical vibes. I absolutely love it

Yes you are. The detuning sounds like shit. Sp does his voice. This band in general is shit. Therefore, you have shit taste in music.
