The biggest issue I had when I had an F-150 with a 5.0 was the windshield washer fluid line would clog causing washer fluid to not spay out of the nozzle onto the windshield. Apparently that was a common issue on the 5.0 trucks. Never had any other major issues besides that one with the engine.

My dad had a 2005 4×4 titan . That truck was amazing. With a magna flow exhaust. With an intake. It pulled hard . And sounded amazing. What a great truck that was
Such a great Nissan generation of truck. They had a few issues, notably the radiator mixing with trans fluid. Rear axle breather clogging. Catalytic converters. Better truck than anything the Americans are putting out
I’ve had 4 first gen titans. My dad bought one brand new in 03 and has 350k on it and barely maintains it. He has a 2017 f150 also and prefers the Titan. Still daily drives it. I don’t daily my Titan anymore but they are very under appreciated especially for the price compared to new trucks
The direct injection 5.6 they put in has horrible carbon build up issues. I really like the Titan but passed on the DI newer models because of this. Catch cans aren’t solving it either. I think the cat issues was fixed years ago too. They had that problem for 10-13 years
Money is not meant to control people, rather it is meant to be put to work producing more money for you. You cannot build wealth without putting money in its rightful place.
Unless you KNOW that it has been done, if a Colorado with the 2.8L Duramax has more than 100K miles on it, you should immediately replace the timing belt. The 2.8L Duramax is a version of the VM Motori 2.8L CRD sold in the U.S. in the 2005-2006 Jeep Liberty. Both engines are "interference" engines--if the timing belt breaks, there can be severe engine damage. The bad news: timing belt replacement is about $1,500 if done by an auto shop. Like all MY2007+ diesels, the 2.8L Duramax is prone to emission system problems, especially if the vehicle is driven a lot in stop and go traffic or is idled a lot.
Toyota's 4.7 does not have emissions but it also relies on a timing belt that should be changed. Do not go by a Toyota by reliability alone- if a timing belt is not changed, then when it breaks , it will grenade the 4.7. Engine replacement is very expensive.
Could you do something like this for folks who are looking for the 2500/250 type trucks for harder work/towing? Struggling to wade through all the issues over the years.
I absolutely LOVE this review!! If I had the cash available and a connection with your auto auction out there, I would buy that ZR2 and that Rebel right now!!
I had a 2004 Titan LE 4X4 and owned it for 12 years. It had it's share of First Year problems like leaking rear axle seals, underperforming brakes, etc but the 5.6L was superb. I sold it in 2016 and bought a 2017 RAM 1500 Limited 4X4 )5.7 Hemi) which I still have. Has 82K miles and has had no mechanical issues whatsoever. Except it now has the infamous exhaust manifold leak (notorious for the hemi). Other than that, it's been a superb truck. Both are good used vehicle choices.
I would choose the Ram Rebel for sure here. Best value for money vehicle, excellent off road and excellent comfort + capability. Not to mention it has a proven V8 that is very reliable.

I'm running currently a 2008.5 Titan SE Crew Cab with the extended bed, 134k miles at the time I'm typing this. Its been a solid workhorse. I was looking forward to eventually upgrading maybe to the 2nd gen body style of Titan but since Nissan declared after 2024 the Titan won't exist....I'm starting to look at Toyota for my next stop. I'm curious to see how long this Titan will keep going.
That generation of Titans suffered from rear axle issues and leaks. The cats would fail, clog, and take out the engine along with it. But I still like them…
The Banks intake and exhaust are the first things to add to a Titan if you wanted to increase performance and they are top shelf, but I guess Nathan doesn’t like performance adders. Truck needs some maintenance for sure but good bones for someone who wants to take on a project.
Just because a truck has an aftermarket intake/exhaust doesn't mean it has been abused. After buying my 2016 Canyon in Ontario, I had to downshift to second gear to climb the steep mountain roads. Even in Alberta, I had to downshift to 4th gear to climb a steep hill on my drive to work. After replacing the stock muffler with a Cherrybomb Vortex, I only had to downshift to 5th gear to climb the same hill, and my fuel economy improved by about 2 MPG. I am hoping that a K&N intake will allow my truck to climb hills in 6th gear. Performance upgrades are necessary if you want your truck to operate at peak efficiency, and it gives you better fuel economy.
No not a basic scanner. You definitely need a higher end one that can scan all the computers, transmission, ABS, body control, hvac, etc. Not just engine codes
@@Argedis I agree about scanning all systems. By basic I meant like not a specific manufacturer or “dealer grade” scanner. Most shops use the autel or similar scanners from Amazon which seem to be stout.
If you're budget can afford more than $2,000 for a vehicle then your off in a class all your own. It's frustrating when people act like everyone under a 10k truck budget are all in the same category
I had the same Colorado Diesel, and it was delightful, but the transmission started to slip at 40k. I took it to the dealer, and they said that the truck was fine because no error code was found. Changed to a 4runner.
Same happened to me at 60k. Thankfully I have a lifetime warranty. I had a completely different dealer experience than yours though. You have to make them drive it. There is a part that heats up by the trans, builds pressure, then releases. So if your issue is like mine, it didn’t do it constantly but when it did, you really noticed. This part is made of the wrong material and to my knowledge, they haven’t changed the material of said part.
Yep that's how they get away with it by saying "that's normal". Also GM is notorious to have extremely high 'tolerances' before it throws a code. (so they don't have to warranty) Like 25%+ slip for example.
I was very fortunate to find my new-to-me truck for the price I did. It's a 2008 Silverado 1500, and it is the quintessential grandpa truck. Totally rust free with a really nice topper and only 78k miles on it when I bought it. $16k might sound like a lot for something that old, but it is in pristine condition.
I just sold my 05 titan, it lasted two cross country trips (wa to sc in 2010 and sc to wa in 2017) and it had around 350k and it still had plenty of life to go. By far my favorite truck ive ever had and i honestly miss it and im thinking of selling my 2019 tacoma to get another 1st gen titan. Only thing that stops me is the taco has a standard transmission plus i got a smoking deal on it with 35k miles on it for $24k.
I just picked up an '06 F-250 regular cab long bed 4x4 with the hated 5.4 3V for $5200. Only has 124k on it and very little rust (surprising for being in the rust belt). There's zero valvetrain noise. Already had new tires, plugs and coils, brakes, and cat back exhaust. It needed exhaust manifolds (broken studs), a fuel tank (had a leak), shifter repair (shifter sloppy), and I replaced ALL of the fluids. The old fluids looked great though, I just wanted to have a baseline for my ownership records. I'm having the driver's seat refoamed and reupholstered and just picked up a tonneau cover. All in, I'm into it for under $9k, including tagging and titling. Even if the 5.4 takes a dump it's cheaper to replace the engine than to buy a new truck.
Good for you. From working in a shop the 5.4 3v can go the distance if you use a high grade synthetic oil along with a WiX oil filter. and change it very 3-5k miles. Checking it in between and topping off. I have seen them with over 300k when that was done
I bought an 05 Suburban Z71 4x4 for just $2300 running and driving. I also bought an 07 Yukon 4x4 for $2500 running and driving. Excellent deals on reliable classic GM vehicles that still get decent fuel economy for their size and are very capable. Suburban will be my overland vehicle and Yukon will mainly be a pavement princess Track Hawk fighter. LS power baby!!!
I was looking at used trucks, my previous was a 2009 f250 super duty . Came across Ross a new 2023 titan xd pro4x with almost every option they took 18% off sticker, and 0% financing. They agreed to add the Miami dual exhaust ( 1800 bucks) if I paid labor. I e never owned a new truck, but compared to used prices and 6-8% interest, it became the best buy for me.
That Ram has been wrecked because the passenger fender is about 2 inches too far and the bumper and grill aren't getting along apparently. 3.5k and the Titan will be sold unless the bidding kicks off.
Good job TFL. Either buy used and fix it if needed or keep what you have and fix it as needed. The mfrs expect you to pay for that 40% pay raise for the UAW workers and the losses on the EVs they cannot sell. The only way to get prices down and the greedy slimy dealers to stop all the markups is to not buy from them.

just as an option for $25k - Ridgeline. It has roomier cabin, definitely worse mpg than diesel, but in overall - good purchase for the money (and you could find better year and/or better equipped for the same money as ZR2 Colorado)
The $25k price point is a no-brainer: 2017 F150 5.0 4WD. I see both quad cab FX4 models and single cab shortbed models for that price right now. That’s the first gen of the aluminum/lightweight body, it comes with CarPlay, and it has the excellent 6R80 automatic transmission so you don’t have to deal with 10-speed gear hunting. That trans, the 4wd system, and the 5.0 are rock solid reliable, and the alumitrucks are much less susceptible to rust than anything GM and Dodge has ever made.
I have a 19 canyon v6 and still like it as much as I did when I drove it off the dealers lot new. They really do feel like a scaled down Silverado/ Sierra.
I don't think seeing Banks parts on a truck would turn me off considering they cost more than everyone else on the market. The other parts of the Titan would make me give it more thought.
Own a 2011 pro4x with 250k. Love the truck. Have just done regular maintenance/wear items and the rear axle breather mod when the axle seal went. Replaced the clock spring when I got the flashing airbag light. Easy fix though. Most gen 1s have after market exhausts with the flange over the axle collecting salt and rusting the exhaust. Great trucks for the price
Dude needs to learn about Banks. That's not some K&N or bully dog bullshit. Banks is legit. If they say their air intake will add 15hp, it will add 15hp. Gale Banks wouldn't sell anything that doesn't work.
Old trucks have much better visibility. I went from a 2010 gmc Sierra to a 2022 tundra. It is really hard to tell where the hood ends. The front windshield is tiny and the rear window, too. Imma probably trade it in.
My friend who drives an old truck, it's a 1987 said that the dashboard on my new Lightning is huge compared to his and that it makes it harder to drive. I rely on the blindspot marker indicators on my side mirror probably too much because of the blind spots in my truck and its a 2023 😂
Love the comparison! Wish you could show them in action in a comparison video, on and offroad. I bet that Titan would keep up with the other 2....except in gas mileage lol!

Frankly, each one of these trucks are good to have, it just depends on you will be using them for, the titan is a good truck for you high schoolers or college kids, the rebel is a good all around truck and in great condition for being 4 years old, and the zr2 is perfect for going off-road and a daily driver for around town, as for me, because of the work that i do, i would choose the rebel, i haul parts to paint and body shops along with a few mechanics in the west texas area and sometimes i pull a trailer with average weight of 6-8k pounds once or twice a week with my 2019 ram 2wd quad cab 1500
I feel like its such a mistake to get rid of V8's. Harder working turbo 4's and 6's arent going to last nearly as long so the cost to own these trucks with turbo powered smaller engines is going to go up. Replacing turbos, etc. is expensive. Back in the day the saying was "There's no replacement for displacement". I hate the direction things are going. I'll keep my GMC Sierra SLT with the 6.0 liter Vortec Max engine. So, for new trucks anyway, we're paying more for something that won't last as long. Thoughts?
Most of them have a tick not because of the lifters but because of the exhaust manifolds breaking off. However, usually when the "real" hemi tick happens with the lifters, it usually is catastrophic to the engine.
the 2021 F150 with the 2.7 is falling below $40k now, and even in Lariat trim, is low $40k-ish. Supposed to be a very reliable engine; not gonna have the tow/payload capabilities of larger engines, but still starting to look like a decent buy!
Awesome video TFL!! Nathan, did you really just say that intakes and exhausts are not needed? If you do it right, you can actually raise your mpg by 4 to 6 mpg!!
The TFL competence team was out and about again. Thank you for the informative video. My dream truck would definitely be the ZR2. But if I were to get it in Germany at all, I would have to pay the equivalent of between 45k and 50k dollars. I'm really jealous of your prices. Best regards.
I had the Nissan Titan - buyer beware. Rear diff is known for blowing up every 60k miles. E-locker gets torn up and usually results in a whole new rear end...not just gears: $4k. Transmission is also prone to overheating on hills - even when not towing.
My 2018 ZR2 w/v6 is still kicking and I mean to keep her for a long time. I would caution those seeking one of their own to pay attention to the DSSV shocks. If they go they will run you between 500 and 600 bucks each. (still less expensive than King) Look at the shocks to see if they look like they have oil on them or if they're super clean. I've had 1 rear fail and I think my fronts are about due (123k mi)
I have seen a few RUclips videos where guys were talking about this problem. They ended up replacing the DSSV shocks with conventional shocks because it was the more affordable option.
@@aerynlovell4754 Maybe affordable but my experience with DSSV off road has been pretty damn good. Maybe if I get that King money together (4k for 2 pair) I'll give them a try.
Nissan trucks in this region have all been worked to the bone. 300k miles on them, often times used as a gardeners or landscapers truck and are pretty beat up inside and out.
I just love watching these vids. I wish we could get a dash shot of these trucks tho. I'd like to see how big the screens are, if they have them, and such. Great stuff tho.
I came Very close to the buying a 2019 ZR2 Diesel. But it couldn't tow my Trailer. I went with a 2019 Silverado Trailboss , for daily life the larger truck is better. But on tight trails the ZR2 would have been better.
I love Toyotas more than anything. Mainly because of their reliability but if RAM added reliability to their name, it would definitely be my top trucks.
They're the most reliable full size pickup truck and have been for half a decade+. Search car gurus for highest mileage 2019 trucks. Rams will be over 50% of the list.

I'm interested in the reasoning behind the suggestion of diesel powertrain when going "off grid" or overlanding. Why do you say they're better for that application? Just the extra torque? Or...
These used car/auction videos really drive home how expensive new vehicles are. I'm the second owner of my Ford F250 Superduty Diesel. I bought it in 2008 with almost 200k on it for 10K. It has 338K on it now. It has towed 5th wheels, an airstream, hauled busted up concrete, landscaping materials, etc... The MPG and acceleration are nothing to write home about but it runs, and runs, and is saving me so much money because people keep spending ridiculous money on these new trucks, so they'll keep making them uber expensive until you guys stop buying them.
Its like a breath of fresh air that you guys are reviewing older more affordable trucks that is a little more realistic for most of us. Thank you TFL.

The direct injection 5.6 they put in has horrible carbon build up issues. I really like the Titan but passed on the DI newer models because of this. Catch cans aren’t solving it either. I think the cat issues was fixed years ago too. They had that problem for 10-13 years
Nissan makes fantastic durable and reliable pickups 🛻
I have a 2018 zr2 and i love it. It is funny hearing them talk about it like its so old though, it still feels new to me.
Money is not meant to control people, rather it is meant to be put to work producing more money for you. You cannot build wealth without putting money in its rightful place.
A friend of mine has an 05 Titan with almost 200k. Solid trucks
I got a 2006 nissan titan 252 K miles runs strong
One of the best videos you could make for informational purposes. Good job, TFL team!
Thank you for the kind words.
I had a 05 Titan 267k miles. Truck was great. Ended up selling it and buying a 2018 Raptor but I still miss that old truck
267k is solid! And 2018 Raptor gang let’s go! Haha
I'd do a ton of research on that 3.5 EcoBoost and 10 speed. So many issues.
No such thing as a Colorado ZR2 diesel for 25k... I've been watching these on the used market for a year!
@keaton2657 you probably live in a horrible state...I live in Oklahoma and I can find them all day for 20-27k
Definitely the Titan..
Have a 2007 with 185K miles..
Runs like a champ..super strong.
All original..
My 2013 Nissan Titan has been a great truck.
Who drives a 50 plus thousand dollar truck off road? If you’re talking a dirt road once in a while or you have a dirt driveway, l get it!
@@melvinhunt6976tons of people do including me lol.

Thank you for the feedback.
Love my 2004 Titan and I bought it new and it runs like a dream still.
You guys should take a basic obdII scanner to these videos and pull codes just to see what the buy cost plus repair cost could be calculated.
I am a fan of the Titans. It is a solid truck and I never understood the hate for it.
You made the correct choice.

Would have been nice to see what these actually sold for at the auction just out of curiosity.
When or if you do the spark plugs get the special tool for removing them. Makes the job easier.
Love my 2019 ZR2 Dirtymax. Be sure to get them with a lifetime warranty. However, if they’re working right; they’re working well.
That Ram has been wrecked because the passenger fender is about 2 inches too far and the bumper and grill aren't getting along apparently. 3.5k and the Titan will be sold unless the bidding kicks off.
In November I got a 2022 Nissan Frontier SV (fully loaded) with 13k miles for $32k. Given the current market, I was happy with what I got.

The 2011 5.3L v8 Colorado I used to have was one of my favorite vehicles.
just as an option for $25k - Ridgeline.
It's weird the ZR2 was there. It seemed really nice...
Don’t touch this, don’t touch that.Ooooo icky . What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Truck guys don’t care about a little dirt, Nathan.
I'm not a Chevy person at all but I'd take that Chevy truck home today.
I would use all 3. 1- Colorado 2- Nissan and sorry ram but you would be 3rd on the list
Nissan Titan and frontiers are solid trucks.
The visibility of my 2013 LT 1500 is not great. Very difficult to see.
Used to have a titan pro4x i bought for 3k and i beat the piss out of it and she took it. Not a truck on the planet that could beat it for the pricw

If you don’t drive a lot get a nissan frontier, their mpg can get worse over time mines engine just exploded, but an 03 lasted me 4 years of straight service, it was in the shop a couple times when it got older but it was decently reliable
In many cases the hemi tick can be prevented or fixed with a melling high volume oil pump & using synthetic oil & frequent oil changes
I,d pick the ram or chevy depending on what i need it for
Frankly, each one of these trucks are good to have, it just depends on you will be using them for, the titan is a good truck for you high schoolers or college kids, the rebel is a good all around truck and in great condition for being 4 years old, and the zr2 is perfect for going off-road and a daily driver for around town, as for me, because of the work that i do, i would choose the rebel, i haul parts to paint and body shops along with a few mechanics in the west texas area and sometimes i pull a trailer with average weight of 6-8k pounds once or twice a week with my 2019 ram 2wd quad cab 1500
Thoughts?
One day Andre will have to admit hes never even SEEN a Ram with "Hemi tick" 😂
Most of them have a tick not because of the lifters but because of the exhaust manifolds breaking off. However, usually when the "real" hemi tick happens with the lifters, it usually is catastrophic to the engine.
the 2021 F150 with the 2.7 is falling below $40k now, and even in Lariat trim, is low $40k-ish. Supposed to be a very reliable engine; not gonna have the tow/payload capabilities of larger engines, but still starting to look like a decent buy!
They do have transmission issues.
I've been reading allot on forums that the Chevy Colorado diesels have some major oil burning problems with just a few thousand miles on the motors.
I got a f150 last month and I am happy but my perfect pickup would be the Chevy Colorado. Have loved them since they came out
Awesome video TFL!!
My first truck is a 2005 Nissan Titan and I am loving it!
I go with Andrea pick with The RAM Rebel. Different tires and you have the perfect truck for under $40,000
Would be cool to post a follow-up of what these 3 sold for... and then then what the buying dealers put them up for.

Love my 09 titan!
Can confirm. I had a salvage titled first gen Nissan Titan. It was a tank.
I'm interested in the reasoning behind the suggestion of diesel powertrain when going "off grid" or overlanding. Why do you say they're better for that application? Just the extra torque? Or...
My dads 2005 titan has 330,000 miles
These used car/auction videos really drive home how expensive new vehicles are.
I'm the second owner of my Ford F250 Superduty Diesel. I bought it in 2008 with almost 200k on it for 10K. It has 338K on it now. It has towed 5th wheels, an airstream, hauled busted up concrete, landscaping materials, etc... The MPG and acceleration are nothing to write home about but it runs, and runs, and is saving me so much money because people keep spending ridiculous money on these new trucks, so they'll keep making them uber expensive until you guys stop buying them.
I love being poor and watching these videos 😢
In the city, the Chevy would be ideal, but if I lived anywhere else, I'm definitely going with the Rebel 🤘
I agree with Andre on this one.
It always amazes me that the nissan Titan is almost always the best choice....but not quite.
