Hi, Tom. I'm your customer with the cherry (IMHO) 2007 silver Tacoma 4X4 access cab, who just sold his grey 2008 Mazda 3s sport for a blue 2017 Passat. I love you guys. I have been a faithful customer since 2009 and recommend you to all my friends with zero regrets. Somehow I figured the Tundra and Titan would round out the top of your list.
Boy, that’s a sweet looking 4Runner back there! Someone has babied that rig for well over 30 years.
One more tip I’d add for you guys to consider. If you boil it down to one particular make and model, drive several of them, if possible, and pay attention to the differences. When I bought my last used vehicle, there was one that really stood out as head and shoulders above the others from a driving perspective.
But as Tom said, don’t skip the pre purchase inspection though. That saved me once. Thank you, Tom.
My 2013 F150 with 5.0 has been rock solid. 140,000 miles and runs like champ.
Coyote V8 is legendary.
I have a 2012 F150 3.5 Turbo EcoBoost. 306,000 miles and no major issues. Brakes, plugs, serp belt etc. love this truck to death. Would take it anywhere and I hope to get a lot more miles. Very strong running reliable truck. Great video and great content. Keep bringing more videos. Would be awesome to see day to day jobs in the shop !
I would have to see that personally lol
@@GarminPro it’s very true ! Its my work truck ! My company just bought me a 2024 Ford Maverick ! Now we will see what I get out of this one !
I have my own OBD port scanner that I use to scan the car myself before I will consider buying it. Sales people get nervous when I do this and it's fun!
Great idea and awesome video, thanks! Could you PLEASE do the same video for midsize trucks! 🙂
Very Informative, honest. Thank you for treating your audience like family and being realistic
Biggest thing for me is rust, I live in the rust belt. I flew to Texas last month and drove my new to me 10 year old rust free truck home. Best tip I have for people. Rust is expensive to fix, not just body components.
Rust yes I have a 95 Tacoma engine is fine clutch is fine I've had the frame patched twice
I'm in the Northeast and how right you are. The DOT, in trying to reduce the amount of sand they put on the road for traction during the wintertime, is now using chemicals that eat your brake lines. I get the underside of my vehicles Fluid-Filmed.
@@AStanton1966make sure you pay your taxes on your new car! ☺️😊
@@Jasiel.95 In my blue state: no taxes, no registration!
yes im in illinois and everything is rusted to hell. ive been looking in florida after my buddy got a mustang there rust free
Hi Tom, what do you think about the mid size trucks? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for all your advice, the first section was phenomenal advice!
Great advice! Any chance you could also discuss and rate mid-size trucks?
Man love this video. I bought a new truck last year. Watched a few videos and thought I knew what I was doing and got totally scammed on a couple of major items bc I thought I checked out everything correctly. Buyer Beware and take your time
i am moving from germany to Utah in a couple of weeks. Thank you for the informations, i will use them the day i buy my first truck there
Great video. I have to say though, you probably rank the F-150 as the worst truck on your list simply because it's the most sold truck in the US. Of course you will see more in the shop.
Love them Titans
They are going away--get one while you still can.
Just bought a 24 in March. So far I’m happy with it. Fingers crossed it lasts me 10+ years with little trouble.
Great video. I am debating between Silverado 1500 or Tundra.
Thanks for information, it helps me a lot.
Hi Tom, sounds like most of the F150's problems are EcoBoost engine related...right? That's why I am looking only at 2015 and newer F150's with the 5.0L V8 Coyote engine and preferably a 6r80 six-speed transmission.
15-17 5.0 6 speed is the way to go.
Tom, I wish that you were in Anoka, MN ... because I have been burned badly by a lot of so called mechanics and shops that have failed miserably in my honest opinion. It is hard to find a shop that I can rely on for good HONEST work...
Must’ve been taught by your governor Waltz
@@dougkaspar9756 don't get me started on that commie...
I try to buy used fleet trucks at auction. Usually maintained on schedule regardless of the driver, and they get rid of them at 100k miles with 100k miles left if you are willing to do some work yourself.
It truly baffles me as to why motor vehicles cannot be made a great deal better to say the least.
No incentive for manufactures to do so
Thanks for the info, been looking for a truck.
The F150s with the V8 are a much better story. 150k miles on mine and no issues.
To me the best Ford engines are 351c v8, 351m v8, 302 v8 and 300 inline 6 cyl. . But that's just me, old school is cool.
Is your assessment of Ford the same with the 5.0 Coyote engine?
I love your content and channel thank you.
Hi Tom, good advice from a Bonafide Expert in the business is always valuable and appreciated. Thanks for sharing: Regarding the F150, if you throw out the EcoBoost garbage, go with the 5.0L V8 Coyote and 6r80 transmission...wouldn't the 2013 to 2017 F150's rate a lot more respect? Still not in Tundra-land though I understand.
Ok so I’ve been thinking about this for a while now, could the fact you see more of some then others be related to the amount of sold & on the road units…!?!
Ford still makes the 3.5l ecoboost. I noticed u also didnt mention f150s with the 5.0l. Not sure why, but thanks for sharing.
The only issue with a used Tundra is that you are looking at paying $30K+ for one without a 100K+ miles on it and in decent shape. Closer to $40K if it’s newer with low mileage. Obviously the older/higher mileage trucks will be cheaper. That’s why I’m considering just opting for a 3/4 gasser. Mainly just for pulling our travel trailer. My Tacoma ain’t cutting it ha.
Toyotas are reliable but only if you maintain them to the letter or better. A used one would have to have meticulous records of proper maintenance for me to consider buying one.
Tom, My 19 year old son is starting a junk removal business. On a budget. Can only afford about 15k. Is there a work pickup you could recommend. Thank you
I'm on my 2nd Silverado and have enjoyed them. However, the new models with the auto start/stop and cylinder deactivation down to 2 cylinders stink. Another thing about the Silverado, although I haven't experienced it, is the rear-end. The owner and chief tech of an axle-repair shop near me says the rear-end of the Silverado's is prone to failures due to the design. He can almost guarantee that you will have a problem with it sooner than later.
How reliable are the 2000 f150 XLTs?
Don't know where you are located, wondering what shop rates are in your location? Thanks
Bought a 2019 raptor lot mechanics even dealer told me not to change the transmission oil the truck has 65k miles to be exact I want to keep it till 120k miles I think should I change the oil or will that make me have issues down the road. I’m hearing some have issues after changing the oil of those f150
My 2013 F150 5.0 has 314,000 miles. Hoping to make it to 400,000 ...
Thankyou, truck failures percentage of trucks on the road? I have 2013 Ram1500 3.6, 107,000 mi. plenty of parts replaced, now chassis rot fuel tank hanging. There is a 12 year warranty on it. Good fuel economy nice truck driving wise, List of parts replaced. Biggest pain P0128, replaced sensor
, thermostat(NAPA). Tundra has a good reputation. I use youtube all the time, it takes time to find the right answer.
At 7:28 - would a Ford F-150 move up substantially if it does not use an ecoboost (turbo) engine? I only ask because I'm looking at a 2002 F150 with 4.6 V8 SOHC with 240k miles. My other family cars are Toyota and Honda and I only buy non turbo.
Turbo engines are great, until you have to work on them.
What about the new turbo tundras. Are they any good??
When you're talking about Tundra's you don't mean the 3.4/3.5L V6s right?
Maybe you just see more Fords and Ram’s because there are more of them? Just a thought
That's one reason why the F150 is the best selling pickup, because companies buy them in bulk for their fleets.
Just corious Honda Ridgeline?
Tundra driver here
The next question is how do you find a good shop!
Always ask the local taxi drivers who works on their taxis .
I hate that guy's don't separate trucks in terms of power trains. Rams 5.7 hemi has questionable reliability. 3.6l pentastar very reliable. 3.5 1st gen eco boost. Questionable. Coyote 5l pretty good
Ford F1EcoLeaker!
No one lets you drive 20 miles at a dealer
Who is it that says it…? Lifetime fluid is lifetime of the warranty period.
We really need manufacturer warranties of 120K miles or you don’t sell your car. Delete Cafe regulations, delete electric car incentives. That’s caring for the environment!
Put gas in it drive it for one hour take it to the car wash and then to your shop
