  • Is this quite possibly the best affordable sports car you can buy? It shows that driver enjoyment has nothing to with the level of equipment or how modern the interior is but how great the car is to drive!

    I drive a 3.0 Supra GR, but a week ago I finally encountered a GR86 at a dealership and was able to get a good look at it. It is low to the ground just like the supra, nearly identical in size, and the design is great but not as striking. Not only that, but you probably get more reliability, 250 horse power on a small and light car is more than enough to have fun on normal roads, and for nearly half the price, it's an incredible deal!

    Nowadays "outdated" interior design is very quickly becoming a pro, not a con. Almost all cars obsess over fiddly and dangerous touch controls, as well as "sleek" design which in reality means cheaping out on useful controls. Oh and LEDs everywhere!

      Agreed. Give me a physical button I can use with muscle memory not something buried in a sub sub menu on a screen. How manufacturers got that through homologation is infuriating.

      100% Android auto and heated seats (with their own toggle switches) are a great addition without making anything else over-complicated. After living with a FK8 type R with the climate controls in a submenu and no volume knob, the GR86s simple functionality is a breath of fresh air. I love everything about the car!

    Considering that GR86s are in high demand and are pretty much as rare as hen's teeth in the UK, you're very lucky to get access to one Tish! Usable performance on public roads, low seating position with the gearshift being almost a handspan away from the steering, the ability to use the throttle to get the rear-axle to steer the car, no fake vents and pretty affordable running costs - what's not to like? EVs have their place for the future, but hopefully we can see lightweight manual cars like this being produced to be powered by synthetic fuels/hydrogen 🤞 Honestly in terms of brand new cars sold today - there's only a handful of cars that I'd genuinely would buy with my own money and deal with depreciation - the GR86, 911 GT3 Touring and BMW M340i Touring. Agreed with you about the compact dimensions at 6:58, having a smaller car can allow you to adjust your lines when cornering on a narrow country road, potentially avoiding potholes etc👌

    The Toyota GR86 to me is an epic 2-seater Japanese sports car. Like you said, it sold out in just 90 minutes for the UK. However, for Poland, the 50 units destined for the Polish market were sold out in just 35 seconds. Wow!
    However, last month, I found that it's not coming to Romania, simply because Toyota RO doesn't wanna sell it in that particular market, and as someone who's part Romanian, that's a huge shame.
    Even though they wouldn't bring massive numbers there, I sincerely wish the GR86 was offered in Romania.

    • @AutoSocialUK
      @AutoSocialUK  Год назад +1

      That is a bit shame, they’ve really kept with small numbers for this one!

    • @DaveDVideoMaker
      @DaveDVideoMaker Год назад +1

      @@AutoSocialUK Yup. They only limited it to 19 European countries, and others.
      If customers in Romania, Bulgaria, etc want a sub €40K 2-seater Japanese sports car, they’ll have to go for the MX-5. Granted, it’s less practical than the GR86 as you mentioned, but it’s still built on a RWD 6MT platform.

    Awesome video Tish 👍 really thoroughly researched on the GR86's development, and highlighting its slight flaws! A lot of people are noticing the GR86's slightly over-enthusiastic throttle response compared to the BRZ version (not sold in Europe), but it looks like that can be rectified with a tune 👌Also the clutch may have a delay valve which might be the culprit of jerky gear changes from 1st to 2nd. Keep up the great work!

    I put my name on the waiting list in September, picked my car up last Monday (6 days ago). It definitely prefers a gutsy launch, HAHA!. I'm 300 miles in and its the best car I've ever had, despite being the least powerful car I've had for 10 years!
    You might be able to still get one if you put your name down now, but they wont be sold in the UK after 2023 due to its lack of safety cameras, auto braking, bla bla bla which in my opinion makes cars more dangerous.

      Wrong. Toyota-stamped parts are all over the GR86/BRZ incl the whole transmission (from other Toyotas/Lexus), D4S (only on Toyotas except the 86) etc and Toyota designed the body of Gen2 (the profile is just a smaller RCF). Subie manufactures em, but it's fully a collab with Toyota.

    • @boldcitycc
      @boldcitycc Год назад

      @@nn99nn99yes, I hear this a lot. The car is built in a Subaru factory for sure. Boxer engines are definitely Subaru, but the Aisin transmission is Toyota.. The D4 S injection is 100% Toyota. In fact Toyota insisted it would be on this car.. Subaru said it was impossible, but it did end up being done. Now the true part of his statement, was the differences between the 2 cars are small. This much is true. Front appearance, wheel color, different tune, and probably the most significant is different suspension set up. Couple other minor things like GR has an oil temp readout in degrees in track mode.. But basically they’re the same car .

    • @boldcitycc
      @boldcitycc Год назад

      I do own one here in the US. That jumping out feeling is a bit of Toyota trickery with the throttle mapping. The Toyota version has 80% of the throttle in the first third of pedal travel .. it makes smooth starts tricky, and there isn’t much past the first third of the pedal. The Subaru version does not do this. My son has that one and lives in a different state. He’s driven mine,and he struggled with it. He said his is way easier to modulate. I have not driven his BRZ and he lives 1,000 miles away, and he flew down when he saw me. Personally I’m thinking I’d prefer the way the BRZ is mapped myself. I prefer the front of my GR 86 though
