The Toyota GR 86 is what the GT 86 should have been in the first place. Unfortunately it's priced out of the reach of the average petrolhead. The price of car's in South Africa is spiralling out of control. Another great review by the Car's Co Za team.
It's really a shame they're marked up so much overseas. In the states they start at 28k USD which is very good for what you get compared to econocars. The ecoboost Mustang is also a great value around the same price but it's pretty bare bones and once you go premium and add a few options the price skyrockets. Same with the WRX and the MX5.

Ah yes. Finally i love the fact that you mention that they don't build their own cars. Toyota sells 5 times more of the Suzuki built and designed cars that what Suzuki sells. Even though Toyota gives you less as standard with a worse warranty and service plan for more money. People in south Africa will buy anything with a Toyota badge on it.
@Adriaan Serrao, 1 of the main reasons for Toyota outselling Suzuki is dealer network. People, especially older people look for convenience when it comes to having to take their cars for service etc. Why travel 20km when a different brand selling a similar product albeit a bit more expensive that's just 5km away. It might not seem much but for some it's about convenience. Once Suzuki starts having more branches that sales gap will decrease.
If you put a turbo on the same motor you would spend 8-10k more. Then it’s going to be out of reach for it’s target market. The people that want a turbo can get a Supra or the Gr Corolla.
It isn't really, it's just mentally a lot for many people. What I do is go at gear one and keep at gear 1 or 2 if traffic moves and take my time as per the car.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that "Toyota don't build their own cars anymore", but in certain instances they have partnered with others where it makes good commercial sense to do so. They did help Subaru with the multi-spark ignition & optimization of the GT86 engine, & have had a big hand in the design of the chassis of the GT86, GR86 & Supra - as a result, the Mk5 Supra is way more of a track car than the Z4, whereas the Z4 is more of a grand tourer.. I don't know much about the Suzuki-based models so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt there. But a quick Google search tells me that Toyota manufactures Corollas, Camrys, Hilux, Prius, Tacomas, etc. in many countries around the world..
This thing is going to kill the 86 models. Won't sell. Overpriced, under powered. Doesn't look amazing... If it were priced under 600k, then people will be willing for fork out more to turbo/super charge it. At the current price point it should already be making say 210-219kw.
It`d be very interesting leaving it NA but maybe doing an old school Stage 1 upgrade to improve things a bit...Chip, Air Filter and exhaust upgrade would make it better...
And maybe an engine swap, incl a sexy spoiler, front bumper, side skirts and black bonnet with a hood scoop and sexy rims. It could also do with carbon ceramic brakes and a more communicative suspension with slightly stiffer chassis
