@@tameradaniels9457 Off of the latch rods? Or getting the clips off the old handle? If it is off the rods, use a small flat head on the side that isn't hinged and give a little pry, they should open right up! If you are getting the clips off the old handle squeeze the tabs together on the back side and push it through.
My dad bought an s10, then it went to my brother, then me. None of us noticed it had a 3rd door til i was looking at the back of the cab and i saw the gap. I'm hyped
That's awesome man, I don't know if you read other comments or not but I think I told someone about how I didn't realize til I went to take my wife and two daughters (three now) somewhere and told her to put the seat down. It was just a cubby, no seat belt, then I saw the handle. Haha, I think almost everyone gets surprised with their third doors.
I'm in the same boat, had a few of these trucks when I was a kid, now I'm an adult and wanted another one. So here I am watching this So I can fix my door, making sure I don't need anything weird before I start. Thanks for the video, huge help.
That's awesome man! Just something about them has always stuck with me. Of course when I was a kid all I had was the 2wd extended cab, but it had the v6 so she was quick. I always drooled at the zr2's haha {I'm more outdoors off road type). The opportunity came up and I was able to make it happen. Thanks for checking out my channel! I'm on the road to 1,000 subscribers!
I bought the part on eBay for less than $9. I watched your video, and then installed the part, on the first try, in less than two minutes. Thanks for the very helpful video!
Thanks for your video on S-10 3rd door handle! There is no way I could have figured it out without the help of your video 👍🏼💪🏼🎯got it done in 10 minutes.
It's not this easy on my '99 S-10. I've done this a couple of times and the only way I could access the two rods was to unbolt the seat belt and remove the inner door panel. But it's not that difficult. The panel just pry's off after the seat belt bolts are removed. I am glad that someone is now making a metal version of the part. I'll get that next time. And there will be a next time.
Interesting story... I bought my 2003 GMC Sonoma used in 2006. Never knew it had a 3rd door until 2021... D'oh!!! I always wondered what the flappy plastic latch did on the inside of the door. So... saw this replacement part while looking for other parts on eBay, bought it, and without seeing your video first I took off the inside panel and attacked it that way. Also had to remove the seat belt bolts top and bottom. But it's really easy to get at everything and verify where to hook up the metal rods on the grippers, by testing the latches manually and seeing how far and which way they move to lock/unlock. Took about 10 minutes to get the door apart. (Be careful with the seat belt bolts getting them back when done... recommend lubing the threads of bolt and hole first as they are really easy to strip.) MY problem was after 15 years of never being used, the top and bottom latches were almost entirely stuck. So like a dummy, I also took off the top U-shaped clip which secures the top part of the door... DO NOT DO THIS unless you MARK the position of the top U-shaped metal clip first!!! It floats and allows for adjustment of the door closing/spacing - was a royal PIA to figure out where the U-clip was originally positioned. I finally had to soak the latches top and bottom with WD-40 overnight (went out several times to re-coat). Then applied silicone foam next day. Once the latches were working again like it was 2006, was able to get the door to open/close and get the rods positioned correctly into the handle holders. Man, how many times over the years did I cuss that I didn't have a 3rd door? lol. Also realized now that I have a 3rd door, that I need all new rubber trim but that's a fix for another time.
Yea, I am a collision repair technician for a living, I take apart interiors almost daily. So with the age of the vehicle I chose to avoid all that and keep my invasion has small as possible.
That would be amazing to have a car for 15 years and never find out it has a back door, you also have a jump seat on the passenger side that folds out.
I like the video you did but it doesn't really show you how to attach the clamps to the screw rods. You removed them with a screwdriver, but how did you get the new ones on to clamp down on the rods?
Before I saw this video, I took the interior panel off, and the seatbelt bolts. There are openings in the inside of the door and you can get to everything alot easier that way IMO. took him 3 times of adjusting it, and mine worked the first time but amount of time spent was about equal for both ways. depends on how lucky you are lol.
It's not as easy looking as the video. This was the first time I had ever tried this. You have to use a lot of finesse. Start by doing the outside one first then do the inside one. A pair of needle nose is useful.
I am a collision technician by trade, so this is everyday stuff for me. The key is start on the old marks that are left on the release rods from the old handle and adjust as needed. This was all one take on the video, so you can do it as simple as this....
I'm having the problem of it not having enough pressure to open. I've moved it several times on the rods and just can't seem to get it. Is there a certain spot to put the clips? Any advice?
I would keep moving them towards the center. Basically adding more tension to them to allow the handle to pull harder. Un-clip the rods and move them and clamp back on.
@@WildWonderfulOutdoors ive tried moving them towards the middle, but they seem to get less pressure. For me. They have the most pressure with the left one on the top of the thread and the right one on the bottom of the thread. Such a simple thing is really getting annoying for me.
The Motor Man hmm. I will look at mine today after work and play around and get back to you. Lubing the latches might help too. But I will get back to you a little later and see if I can help more. It is pretty annoying trying to fine tune things like that. And the smallest adjustment can sometimes make a huge difference.
But the part that the screw is going into to the mechanism is plastic those are the only issues I have with the ones that have the metal handles is the mechanism is screwed down to plastic wish they made these in all metal no plastic at all

The clips on the aftermarket handle are a little different than OEM. I originally put them back on the same spots but had to re adjust.

I like the video you did but it doesn't really show you how to attach the clamps to the screw rods. You removed them with a screwdriver, but how did you get the new ones on to clamp down on the rods?
You just squeeze them like a clip. They are harder to remove than install.

You got it man! Glad it helped!
Thanks so much!

Im a little late, but what would i do if im missing the rod that goes to the bottom latch?
Go to a junkyard and try and find one. Or remove the latch that you don’t have the rod for so it can lock.
Will this also fit the extended cab 2 door?
No sir, this is the 3rd door handle that mounts inside the door jamb.
Awesome THX George

How do you latch the second latch?
It should do it when you shut the door. Are you having trouble with the top latch releasing when trying to open the door?

I completely agree. But it’s not the case.
Yea skipped passed that part where it’s a pain in the a$$. Getting the clamps around the rods
You just take them off the rods. Use a small screw driver or pick tool to open the clasp.
