We’re entering a delicate time in civilization where our collective consciousness is such that we are all more likely to appreciate honesty over a pandering lie which we’ve become so ultra scrutinous of, and even Chad would prefer his vassals to speak their mind than curtsy to the king

I share your immense appreciation for The Doors. I'm an old guy and saw them live in New York City in the late 60s. I also have a large Doors collection including the AP double 45 and completely agree with your review of it. I was a bit skeptical about the UHQR since I have not had a good experience with other albums on it, even have sent some back. I have been following your channel and occasionally have ordered records from you and almost always agree with your opinion. This review has helped me decide to avoid it and I thank you very much for the details and your honesty. Thanks again Mike from the IN Groove.

Don’t avoid. There are other views out there. To me this UHQR really cleaned up the slightly overblown 45. I love the 45 but Bernie got much closer to the clarity of the tape if you ask me. I can provide a DSD rip if that would help you.

Mike - from a fellow Doors fan like you, I love hearing you talk about your love for The Doors. They're a band that I feel still do not get the love and respect they truly deserve. No other band before or since has ever blended all the genres and musical/literary influences like The Doors did. Simply put; there will never be another band like The Doors.

Thank you for your honest review. Having the 45RPM I was on the fence on this thing. I HATE DOUBLE DIPPING but I love the album. I was waiting for YOUR review because you know what you're talking about. Other "audiophiles" and I use that term very loosely don't offer REAL reviews. They just say they like how the the pressing sounds. I think 99% of the audiophiles on RUclips have NO idea what they are talking about, and only think they are audiophiles. You're the real deal!

The UHQR is the epitome of clarity. I did back and forth with the A45. UHQR is better to me. The “realness” of the instruments is better to me. Mike is used to his 45 for 9 years. Don’t count this UHQR out. The A45 is louder for sure and harder edges. Bernie did soften it up. But it sounds more real when he softens it up. Doug cut it hotter and as a result over does some of the instruments. The drums sound more real on this UHQR. Different strokes for different folks. I think you need both. Jim’s voice is so sultry and silky smooth. Amazing!!!

I'm all about these AP 45s. I'm not too lazy to change a record. Definitely sticking with the 45rpm. Amazing release. I am not interested in box sets or big box releases. I just don't have the room. But thinking of an album that desperately needs a 2 lp 45, Born In The USA. That album is crammed on a single vinyl. I'd love Springsteen catalog to get 45 treatment but especially that one.

Mike’s love of this LP and the details of it as he outlined here, especially regarding the instrumentation, certainly represents a more engaging and expectant perspective, only enhanced by the awesome system he has at his disposal. Although my experience didn’t discern some of the larger gaps Mike identified in his mind, I certainly agree the 2x45 is a fabulous sounding work, especially for $60. As always, different people/hearing, different equipment and different rooms make a difference. Add to that “different expectations” when we know a record as well as Mike knows LA Woman. Thanks Mike as I will now listen more intently for some of those well explained instrumental marvels you pointed out in this video!

This is making me feel better about choosing the 45 over the UHQR. For me, the issue was the price. I assumed with the 45, I was going to get a great-sounding record, but that I was probably getting the lesser version of the two. I am glad to know this isn't necessarily the case!

  • @mikeyd6372

The UHQR is better to me. Don’t let this review fool you. This sounds amazing. I do back to back as well. Bernie got a lot more clarity here. Mike is used to the other one since 2015. The instruments sound far more “real” to me. For any real
Doors fan you need both. Maybe Mike will give you his or sell it to you for a deal.

Thanks Mike as always. I bought all the Doors AS 45 rpms when they came out - fantastic. Whenever I have people over - one of the songs I like to start out the evening with is Rider’s On The Storm. Absolutely demo quality. Love when the thunder clap culminates, a brief pause then the music starts up again. Gets me every time. The RSD is a nice spin. Looks like I’lll give it another spin tonight, thank you
I did double dip on the Bill Evans UHQRs and they do nuance things - although if you have the AP box you are there

My biggest issue with the new box is moving forward keeping subsequent titles in alphabetical order will mean they don’t match. Should’ve stayed committed to the original aesthetic. Luckily I had the 45, so that plus the different box made it an easy pass.

  • @revelry1969
    @revelry1969 13 дней назад +2

Mike, I get your view. Doors are my favorite too since I was 11 as well. But at least on my equipment the 45RPM seems a little too hot. The Bernie cut sounds way more real to me. The instruments have much more clarity than the Doug Sax 45. This 33 is my go to now. I am not sure what you mean by the organ is in the background. It’s omnipresent. I appreciate the bass coming forward a little. If you want the best sounding version to me….its the current UHQR. The noise floor is better….and it really helps separate the instruments. Amazing! The A45 is cut louder with not as much head room. The UHQR has much more headroom and feels more airy. The drums kick like real and the organ is there. I think in the Sax the voice is pulled way up front…. I love Jim’s voice but the Bernie definitely features all the instruments. I like this “balanced” approach in this case. I enjoy hearing all the instruments with more air in between . The A45 is cut louder for sure. Turn the UHQR up! More headroom!!!!

    • @jabensergei
      @jabensergei 3 дня назад

Reading your comment makes me wonder why only minority mention that upper hot voice and some says guitar sound of 45rpm cut. You are the 2nd person who compared both and found UHQR better that I have seen so far. Another fella found UHQR more involving and musical, at least this was mentioned as one of the reasons. Also have read same been mentioned on Hoffman forum from 2020, where some folks even sold their AP 45rpm and replaced with much cheaper, but to them better sounding version. Why? Same problem you stated. I like to get this record and after reading so many comments that 45rpm is one to buy almost ordered one, but now not sure. Whichever way, thank you for your honest opinion mate!

    • @revelry1969
      @revelry1969 3 дня назад +1

@@jabensergei welcome. I think the UHQR feels more real and less bombastic. Bombastic is good on some days. But the UHQR just seems to allow all the instruments to work together. The 45 is a good cut but to me the 45 is just well…more musical/pleasing. But different strokes for different folks.

I just listened to the 33 and 45 again and to me the albums are different mostly because of the heavier bass on the 45 while the 33 is more articulate perhaps forward. To me they complement each other. Listen to Jim’s voice especially on LA woman or Cars hiss by my window and you’ll see this.

I really like the 50th Anniversary LP box Version. They have done some processing to it, and it has what I would describe as a very black background which I like better than the one in my 45 RPM doors set. Partial to the Doors, as it was my first Rock concert. But my favorite is
Morrison Hotel, which I also have in a Japanese pressing and my original domestic pressing.

Do you do the listening tests without knowing what pressing you're hearing?
    If not, why not?
Imo if anyone is going to do a listening test of any sort it should be done blind to eliminate any possible bias.
Not saying you're bias, just interested in knowing how you conduct the evaluation.
It shouldn't be hard to have someone else playing the records without you seeing them while you sit and don't move and just take notes and rank your favourites.
Im not a fan of BG cuts either.

The AP45 of this is the best rock record I've ever heard in terms of audio quality. The only thing the UHQR could be that people would like over the 45 is "different". There might be some people who prefer the signature of the UHQR, but I'm with Mike in that the AP45 represents both the best fidelity and the most traditional Doors sounding record available.

This is really a good review and assessment of the LA Woman UHQR album. 👍👍👍 I haven't done a shootout between the Sax 45 rpm and the Grundman UHQR, so I can't comment about which one I prefer. I really like what I've heard from the UHQR. If I wanted to hear LA Woman on 33 1/3 rpm, this would be my go to version. One thing I love about the 45 rpm is the fact that Doug Sax used his tube electronics mastering process made famous from the Sheffield Lab days and The Mastering Lab. This could be part of what you're picking up on, and I fully get where you're coming from. It's all a pretty subjective thing, since people have their own standards for what sounds the best to them. 👍💖🎸😎

The UHQR is amazing. The 45 is brash with Jim’s vocal berating you the whole time. I like the 45 but this 33 beats the 45 on clarity and balancing the soundstage. To me you can hear all the instruments much better and they sound more real. The A45 is a bit brash to me and is cut louder. The UHQR has headroom and you can turn it up and loud! The a45 becomes fatiguing much sooner with the forward voice. I want to hear the whole band and this UHQR does. Bravo Bernie! Get both!

Well Mike join the club I haven't read a review about this record where anybody did like The sound compared to the 45 RPM.
Now personally I don't have FOMO I recently bought 2 Rhino Hi-Fi records that weren't better than The ones I had in my collection and obviously I have the the two LP45 RPM version that I bought the week came out which I think sounds utterly fantastic. even if the UHQR was a little bit better The only thing I'm missing out on is spending $150 bucks and it turns out, some Fidelity as well. Thanks for the review appreciate it. How can it be called a ultra high quality record when it's not as good as the previous release from acoustic sounds.
And I agree Ray manzara is so good, I love his keyboards. Great sound great musicianship.
Also Mike don't worry about what other people hear on a record.
we're here for your opinion you can't help the way you hear the record that's what we want to know. What I've done my videos in the past I didn't watch anybody else's video or have any clue about what other people thought about the record I just listen to it and gave my opinion pretty easy.

I am glad that towards the end you *qualified* your comment by saying this UHQR is the best of *the currently available* 33⅓ rpm editions because it is certainly not the best sounding 33⅓ rpm.
That distinction would have to go to the absolutely stunning DCC, which if I am remembering correctly, you were quite fond of and called it your "go to" 33 copy - which is not odd because many think the DCC is the best sounding edition, period. Myself included. Even bettering the otherwise excellent AP 45rpm.
    [ UPDATE ]
I've have just re-watched your original L.A. Woman shootout video from 2018 and I was correct. You had picked the DCC as the BEST sounding version short of the 45rpm.
    _______________
    Quote from your 2018 video:
"...This is the 1999 pressing mastered by Steve Hoffman. This is a great sounding pressing of this record. It sounds nothing like the 30 copies of LA Woman I listened to while making this video, but the bass is nice and tight and John Densmore drum kit sounds like it's in the living room with you. The cymbals have a shimmer to them that is present in my original Pitman pressing but with all the missing bottom end.
But it almost sound like you're listening to a remix of the album. It has a very audiophile sound to it. It sounds too polished *but it's still my go to 33 pressing.*"
    End quote
    _______________
    So what's the deal?
You totally glossed over saying anything about the DCC when you were thumbing through the stack of the various pressings! 🤔 You would think that *minimally* since the DCC was your previous *go to* 33⅓ pressing that you would at least mention it or award it an honorable mention! But no. Just crickets when thumbing past it. WTH?
Which leads me to believe you did not do a proper "head-to-head" comparison of your top two 33⅓ pressings (DCC vs UHQR). Yet you bestow the new UHQR - an edition which you are clearly not enamored with - the title of "The best 33⅓ edition". Wait, what?
Well, o-k, technically it may be the best 33⅓ *currently available*.
    Cheers!

Man- I think they just did it right the first time. Find yourself a clean butterfly label and you’re good to go. Sounds perfect to me. People act like no one could master an LP til the gimmick of audiophile LPs came around. People- they were total pros in the 60s and 70s too. I’ve never heard one modern reissue I’d prefer to have over an OG or early repress.

I really agree with you on this one. I was expecting a lot from the UHQR - based on early reviews. But it was disappointing and in my opinion it was flat (as you say) and way behind the AP 45. Very surprised anyone could rank this ahead of the AP 45.

Well, Some do. The A45 is brash and the voice is so far forward it drowns out all the other instruments. Bernie got the balance right and now they aren’t stepping on each other. This is a wonderful balanced soundstage with better clarity. You need both if you are real
Doors fan. Note: turn up the UHQR. It is cut at lower level allowing more head room and clarity. I think Mike just prefers the brash forward voice and organ. The UHQR does not lack organ or voice it’s just not brash.

@@vinyl_valhalla see what you think. It sounds very vibrant to me. I will keep both as they are both good. But the 45 is a little more raucous. Some may prefer that (and I may on some days too). But Bernie did really add some space and depth to the soundstage. It’s definitely more hifi. Made me feel like I was in the room. The A45 has been the standard. I get it. It’s $60 and is a good cut. But the UHQR to me is just so dang clean and balanced without flattening the soundstage. Love hearing all the little details.

With confirmation bias being a thing and all, I’m glad I listened to this before I watched the video. To MY ears it sounded fantastic. I don’t have to be the Doors’ biggest fan in the world to say if something sounds good. Maybe you should tell Bernie to make you your own personal pressing, because all I heard in this “review” is how the album “should” sound and this pressing doesn’t sound how you think the album sounds. That’s just personal preference, that’s not a review. Imagine being a record store owner thinking you know more than one of the greatest mastering engineers of all time 😂. Some balls, Mike!

Mike, I agree with your assessment. However, what you describe is the sonic signature of all UHQR pressings. They all have subdued transients (and other undesirable sonic characteristics) which leaves the performance less focused, soft and inarticulate. I believe the modern UHQR vinyl formulation prioritizes low surface noise over proper sound articulation and clear instrument definition. That is, until the record is sonically optimized with high frequency ultrasonic cavitation. Then ALL UHQR records come alive! But it won’t happen at 40 kHz cavitation…it is way too coarse and doesn’t reveal the details of the groove.

However, on recent live streaming where you where a part of, I believe you said that no way this UHQR beat up the original. Would you be so kind to explain please. Wait a minute, why isn’t the UHQR at 45?? Is it right at assume that if it was at 45, there’s a better chance at it being the best version of this record? This makes no sense to me, if UHQR is supposed to be the end all best versions of recordings, why is it at 33 and thus not being the best it could be?
