Cedar Walton is definitely one of my heroes of jazz piano and with Art Blakely behind him it doesn't get any better than that, this first number he really demonstrates his command over the piano.

If you want to check out more music by this pianist; Walton appears on several albums with the Jazz Messengers in the early 60s. Of the many albums under his own name I can especially recommend ‘Eastern Rebellion” (1975) and “Cedar!” (1967). You can find them on RUclips.

Cedar Walton. I had heard the name. It's a great pleasure to be 68 and hear this piano genius for the first time.

Great sextet with my favourite bone-player, Curtis Fuller, in an absolute fantastic line-up. Indeed -The Jazz Messengers- was by far the best hard-bop group ever! Dig this Gem, folks & Cheers!

In the Early 60s the standards were very high(no pun intended) a very harmonically advanced swinging apex just when all the questions that brought about that more avant approach were still mostly questions. The cats were young and trying hard working hard. It was a really smart period.

This was the year i was born, but the presence and music of these great guys is so strong, that it feels as if they play here and now! I forgot that i could pause the video to get me a pullover, in worry i could miss something of that precious concert. ;)

The Jazz Messengers were the greatest small band ever and here is the evidence. Cedar Walton was such a great pianoman and I love his tunes. How can anyone not like this.

Cedar does sound great and his version of That Old Feeling on "Three Blind Mice" is what made me his lifelong fan. I heard and liked him before but that arrangement was so WALTON that it made me aware that here was somebody more than just great jazz pianist. This version is even better than the one from San Remo IMO.
