Cheap PAL GameCube RGB SCART Cables - Avoid! | IMNC

  • In the PAL region, we're lucky enough to enjoy native RGB support from our GameCube consoles via SCART, but not all cables are the same. In this video, I compare some differences between a cheap eBay RGB SCART cable (£2-£3) and a cable from consolegoods.co.uk of decent quality (£5.90). I get pricing slightly wrong in the video.
I hope to get my hands on an official Nintendo GameCube RGB SCART cable soon and make a follow up to this episode comparing all 3 cables video & audio quality.
Thanks for watching! I hope you all enjoy...

I'm an American living in the UK for many years and my GameCube is a local PAL, of course. I had the GCN hooked up to a component switch box and after being spoiled playing the games with superb graphics on the Dolphin emulator, I decided to use the scart cable that came with it (which I put in a box and forgot about it, didn't understand what it was exactly at the time). Switched the GCN from component to the aforementioned scart and wow, what a tremendous difference! I have your second cable that I bought for cheap as well. Thank you for sharing this video, I will also keep an eye on a first party scart cable on eBay.

Just bought a 49inch 350 quid 4k tv from Currys that had 1xscart, 1xcomponent and 4xhdmi so some newer tvs still have these options. Once hooked up with switchs, i now have 13 consoles at the flick of a few switchs. Cheers for the video as it helped me decide on the gamecube output.

For my RGB set up I just didn't go with off the shelf cables, I re-purposed VGA cables (very good shielding) and have audio using the original AV cables, as my setup is split in terms of video and audio.. Plus SCART equipment is expensive here haha
I wouldn't recommend going this route for small setups, however..

Many people mod old consoles to output HDMi directly, but I prefer getting original or high quality RGB SCART cables, and later down the line buy a Retrotink 5X Pro or a 4K when I decide to stop using CRTs, which is not anytime soon. Have you tried getting a SNES RGB SCART cable? I have one and if I'm not mistaken it also works with the Gamecube. It doesn't work with the N64 without modding it first dough.

_besides the hdmi mod i basically got nothing for my pal gamecube ?_
      - If your TV has no SCART port and you don't want to buy the component cable, HDMI mod is the best. But you can also buy the first edition Wii and buy Wii component cables which cheap. It is nearly the same quality.
_since the other eon adapter apparently break ur gamecube_
      - I believe this was fixed with most recent adapters, if they fit securely like the EON it won't break it.
_and the componenet cable dont have progressive scan for pal gamecube which makes the quality higher so say if someone used the cable on a pal gamecube would the image stay the same quality as composite?_
      - PAL GameCubes don't have progressive scan at all. It doesn't matter what cable you use, you will never get a progressive scan output.
The image clearity will be much better if you use atleast SCART and even a little better when you use component or HDMI mod. But seriously composite is so bad that SCART makes a huge difference that it is not worth to upgrade to component or even HDMI. But this is only when you have a SCART input on your TV.
*The best options for PAL gamecube:*
      - Official or good quality GameCube SCART cable. (if TV supports)
      - Buy first edition Wii and Wii component cables, this is actually pretty cheap and good alternative if you don't mind playing on the Wii (it has controller ports for GameCube controllers.)
      - HDMI mod.
PS: I do have a GameCube with official SCART cable and own a Wii with component cables. I prefer to play on the GameCube with SCART because the clearity and colors are a little bit better than Wii + component.

  • @DAVIDGREGORYKERR
    @DAVIDGREGORYKERR 8 лет назад

There is a SCART to micro connector which does work but the wires inside the lead can break and render the unit useless, It is a shame that the Nintendo Game Cube doesn't support HDMI, the second one is indeed better.

There's another problem with cheap GameCube RGB SCART cables. Nintendo being Nintendo cheaped out and only use Sync on Composite. Not Sync on Luma or Csync, which produce a cleaner RGB signal. Unless using a well shielded cable, Sync on Composite can introduce checkerboard patterns or jailbars to the video.

    • @AndehX

Just use a Wii and component cables. The benefits of component video are best seen with larger resolutions, I stress component video for anything that was released after the Dreamcast where possible. The Dreamcast is best with VGA, and the prior consoles are all best with RGB wherever possible.
That said, my Wii uses RGB, because the only TV I own is a CRT from the 90's (B&O ME6000). I already owned the TV from soon after I purchased a Master System, and owning many TVs is just not practical.
Ironically, HDMI and flat panel displays really have no purpose for my living room, as I don't actually watch TV, and anything digital is handled by my PC in a different room. Thankfully.
