The Nitty Gritty: What's up everyone, I’m that guy Osiris and today we are going to be talking about Lab Diamonds. Lab diamond's popularity has been booming and People keep asking me what my opinion is on them and if they are worth it. Today we are going to dive in on the topic, give you my personal take and some tips on how to buy them.
The number one question I get is are lab diamonds "real" diamonds. The answer is yes. So please don't confuse them with a fake diamond like a Cubic Zirconia.
A lab diamond is "grown" inside a lab using tech that replicates the conditions needed for a natural diamond to grow. They are grown in weeks compared to a few billion years, so If you have the time to wait for a new nature diamond go for it! The Lab diamond is physically, chemically and optically the same as a mined natural diamond. Here are two side by side. Can you spot the difference? I’ll wait
My Personal Take, I see lab created diamonds in a positive light. They have their place in diamond alternatives. Its a great earth friendly option that's budget friendly. Lets look at the most obvious positive. PRICE. Lets compare these 2 carat diamonds side by side. Wow. Talk about bang for buck! Its hard to unsee this.
Now just because its cheaper doesn’t mean you should take learning about ideal settings to ensure you have the best cut lightly.

You will notice that Lab grown diamonds are certified by IGI and not GIA. GIA does not grade Lab diamonds. So it is what it is. What does that mean for you? IGI certificates are generally one shade off of clarity and color. If it says the diamond is a I color vs2, it going to be a J color SI1. Say what! Why do you ask? That’s the diamond game. There are certificate companies that are friendlier to the diamond seller. GIA is more ideal for the buyer than the seller. With this knowledge, know its off a shade. Unfortunately, this is what we have to deal with with buying a lab diamond. I will be creating a separate video one day on certificates and if I do I will add down here somewhere. But for now, remember this, natural diamond buy GIA certified only, lab diamond, you are forced with IGI which is off a shade typically.
How can you tell a lab diamond apart from a natural diamond? Simple answer is you cant tell. They are optically the same. However, one way of noticing is inclusion can sometimes look different. Take a look at these stones for example. You will see the lab diamond has long scratch like inclusions. Compared to a natural diamonds inclusions shown here. We can see this because the clarity grade is lower but once you are in the vs1 range you cant see any of this. .
A negative aspect is resale, but frankly, resale of natural diamonds aren’t nothing to celebrate about. Selling a diamond in general after purchase will be underwhelming regardless and the average is 50% resale. Oh wow I get 50% of my investment! how exciting. Lets compare this 2 carat diamond with this natural diamond and I will argue the price advantage is worth the risk.
I imagine as they continue to grow in popularity, you will have an easier time selling it on ebay. Some say they have zero resale but I can see a 25% return especially how its growing in popularity. Now 25% of a much lower price I like better than 50% of a high pri
How do you guys feel about lab diamonds?
They're a good concept if you can save money and get the same exact thing! There is something symbolic about the billion year old typical diamond though.

Hi actually my cousin works for GIA and they are starting to certify lab grown Diamonds his the one that told me to get a Lab diamonds.
Thats great to hear. For some reason, vendors are only using igi still. Im sure in the near future some GIA certs will be more common.

I had a $4,000 real diamond. When I went to trade it up to a larger one for my wife, it was only worth $100. A jewelry store buys them wholesale and then mark the price up 4000%. The value of a real diamond is fake.

Thanks so much for these videos!!! They were extremely helpful in buying my engagement ring and I’ve learned so much Diamond terminology and information in general. She always told me she never cared about the stone (whether it was a Diamond or something else). I was really hesitant about lab grown diamonds, but honestly after the research I pulled the trigger.
1) I saved $2250 on a lab grown Diamond that was two upgrades higher in clarity and color than the natural one I had. This one is G shade and VVS1 (just learned now it’s a shade lower, but hey it’s all good). It looks freaking beautiful.
2) She was fine with any stone and she’s all about being eco-friendly.
3) If you’re concerned about re-sale value, it sucks with diamonds anyways. Plus, an engagement ring shouldn’t be something you’re thinking re-sale about in the first place.
Original price with the natural Diamond and setting I chose was $6500. New price with the lab Diamond which looks way better $4250. Only person who knows is her and I. Maybe in the future we’ll get a real Diamond just for kicks, but for now I think it’s perfect. Thank you!
You don’t have to get a real diamond just for kicks, you already have one. Take pride in knowing that a child slave didn’t have to work for pennies so your wife can wear being.

Know that the diamond you chose is seeded from a mined diamond and then grown further in the compression chamber.

Thank you for the fantastic series on diamond buying. It has been a wonderful education for me as I am about to buy a ring to celebrate our 20th anniversary. I have always thought resale value to be a bit of a red herring when it comes to its' consideration in the purchase. One, you will never get the original value if you are having to sell it one day which is rare for most people anyway, and secondly, for insurance purposes, the insurer will always replace your lost/stolen ring with something comparable in specifications but not original value. I'm sure they will get much better pricing as well. So in my mind, resale value is almost meaningless. Perhaps you can help with a video on choosing settings in regards to which settings are best for each cut and how to save money on settings. Thanks again and please keep up the great work ! BTW - I am leaning heavily towards a lab grown diamond. Hard to beat the value if you can just ignore the perceived value of a natural diamond and any stigma associated with the idea of "lab grown".
Thank you! I agree that resale is very underwhelming. Helping a friend now and she is getting 20% back on what she paid. She bought wrong of course which makes it worse. And yes, insurance and appraisals are a bit of a scam. Everyones has a double than what you paid for appraisal, which means you pay for a higher premium and they simply replace at a wholesale cost. I am with you as well in my thoughts on lab.

You are very welcome. In the past, I had found their pricing on diamonds higher than James ALlen or Bluenile. SO from a value standpoint I preferred the other sites since pricing was better. The purpose of my videos is to give the most value. If they have Lab diamonds now that's good. For now, I love James Allen and With Clarity for my Lab diamonds.

Hi Osiris I was looking for some advice on single row diamond band rings. What color/clarity grade would you recommend looking for? Was looking to spend around 400-450 USD.
Natural stones never appealed to me. Created diamonds are awesome. I look forward to more options as well as prices more competitive with moissanite. Most jewelry stores seems to only sell natural diamonds. I am guessing that it is due to higher margins, but maybe it is just because it will take a while for them to adapt to relatively new market trends.
FYI: A jeweler told me that “lab grown” may refer to a CZ while “lab created” will always refer to a real diamond. I thought that was interesting, although I have yet to see a CZ referred to as a lab grown diamond. But, I haven’t been looking at shady retailers. Etsy definitely has some rings that blatantly lie about the materials.
Austin P yes Etsy and eBay. I remember reading a diamond clarity description that it’s an eye clean diamond from arms length 😂 tea stores have more margin. One day they might have labs.
Yea some jewelers will till to you that but if any you know tells you that RUN they are just trying to sell you glass at a higher price. Im glad you dont mind lab grown diamonds because im a jeweler and it's hard to get buyers to understand lab grown diamonds are real

Glad I have helped you. Medium Flour doesn't bother me. I think sometimes you can find a nice G color on a discount with it and you can take advantage. Or help a J or I color look a little more white. Typically high color and strong flour is when things can possibly become problematic.

I hear what you’re saying about the price point. However, if resale is 25% of cost I still have a hard paying $5000 for a nice size lab created diamond. I inherited some money and thought I’d splurge and get a 2-3 carat. I can’t even bring myself to spend the money on a lab grown! 🥺
Haha I feel you man. Spending on a diamond is a tough pill to swallow. Imagine spending 17 on a natural or 6 on a lab. Maybe buying a one carat natural is for you.

Blood diamonds are extremely rare though. If you're getting a new diamond from a reputable seller, there's less than a 1% chance.
I think it's great to have an option between mined or lab. Mine must be mined.

What’s your insight on ACA diamond from whiteflash vs brian gavin true hearts and arrows? And compared to the ideal cut IGI graded diamond from James allen, is it worth the price jump to whiteflash or brian gavin?
Thanks for the comment Hansel. In terms of premium, they go in this order, whiteflash, brian, true hearts(price wise) In the diamond game, that absolute perfect cut will cost such a premium, it can sometimes be very hard to justify. Its hard for me to make that choice for my buyers. I often filter ideal cuts to find the best of the best with ideal percentages. I feel those are the best to buy. I do think True hearts is priced fairly in comparison to whiteflash etc. I can get such a larger carat instead of the few percentage points on cut gained. There is a point of diminishing returns. Tho cut is king indeed, is a few percentage points better worth carat size, which can impact the diamond stronger. Its a balance and a preference, that's my best answer.

Thank you for the comment. They claim to yet I haven't seen one diamond for sale with one. So my comment stands that IGI is the certificate company you will be dealing with referencing Labs.

Do VS diamonds sparkle as much as flawless? Or does the inclusions, even if negligible to the naked eye, obstruct some light reflection?
I have been looking into lab diamonds and I love the concept. For some reason I'm struggling with the idea that there is now a device that can tell the difference between lab created and natural diamonds. Logically I understand that they are real diamonds but I am finding it hard to get past with tiny differences. Am I right in thinking that the testers are just picking up on the nitrogen impurities in the natural diamonds? They are both real diamonds but the natural ones are not as pure? I guess that's a good thing right??
Super late reply but yes you're right. Natural ones have imperfections, whereas lab grown can be close to "perfect" as possible. That's basically the only difference! (Some lab grown ones are not as "hard" on the Moh scale as real ones, but considering they're still at the top of the scale anyway, the only thing that will scratch them is other natural diamonds so... who cares 😂)

Lab grown and earth mined are both diamonds, what you need to consider is are you ok with a piece of diamond grown in a lab into a larger diamond? I hear a lot about value but run the numbers (numbers don’t lie) to see what one you’ll lose more if for some reason you want to sell. You will lose more $ if you buy an earth mined then sell than if you bought then sold a lab grown.
I was really excited and loved the idea of lab diamonds until I did my research and found out Laboratory diamonds are honestly worthless. To make things worse there’s a test to tell the difference between them, SO Obviously there not the same!? Because lab diamonds can be mass produced and as technology advances they become easier to make and there cost and value will go down drastically. They are not more pure. Natural diamonds have been valued for thousands of years and will always have value. I hope I helped:)
@@BobMarley-iz6fw yeah you need to pay @$7000 for a 1 carat round natural diamond (f color, VS clarity, and great cut) where you will get 30-40% (I called around to see what resale would be most offered closer to 30% for a really nice diamond) of that back where a lab grown costs less than what you lost for the natural value that makes you happy. From a purely financial decision owning a natural makes no sense unless you are good with throwing money away. So you basically you are throwing away more $ to own a natural diamond than own a lab grown stone that has same physical characteristics, often lab has higher quality and lab grown has less impurities.
I wonder how well known brands feel about setting a lab diamond in their rings. I like the Tacori settings but wonder if they would refuse to set a lab diamond in their design?
Tacori makes rings and they are shipped out to stores. Stores will mount for you. Tacori makes so much money from their expensive designs, I imagine they would be happy to know more people can afford their rings due to a more affordable diamond.
Why wouldn't they set a diamond in their designs whether it was dug out of the ground or created in a lab? It's a diamond just like the stone that came out of the ground?

Thanks for sharing! I dont love their site and form of diamond viewing. They dont use official company certs they have an in house diamond expert who grades the diamonds, NOT an official GIA cert.. Some complain of grayish diamond which can be due to the method of lab creation. For those reasons I dont really use them.

If they look the same, how does anyone, even an expert, actually know if it’s lab grown when you try to resell? Say it was really high clarity
One, most lab diamonds sold have a laser inscribed code on the side, so one can use a loop and confirm the cert where it will say lab. Big cert companies have expensive equipment that will say if its lab or not. Regular people shouldn't attempt to buy diamonds uncertified on the street. Only certified goods that all have laser inscribed codes on the girdle of the diamond. Other than that, only lower clarity lab diamonds may have hair-like inclusions. Only other giveaway that the human eye can pick up. Other than that optically identical.

Looking to purchase lab diamond earrings. I see some that are certified and others that aren’t. Is it important to buy them certified?
Typically uncertified goods are cheaper and of lower quality. Its always good to buy certified as you will know the quality of what you are buying.

Typically they have a laser cert number on the girdle of the diamond so yes a jeweler will be able to decipher that. Also, there maybe a specific tester for lab.

Yes they are, their purpose is to further differentiate between a natural diamond and a lab by having a contrast in price. Just like an optimal colored lab sapphire is very cheap but a genuine comparable one costs many thousands.

just depends. Radiants arent always in stock at large carats like this and that can cause prices to go higher due to lack of inventory.

No worries, I have big hands and always type the wrong letters. A .50 total carat weight - two .25's shouldn't have a big variance in size. If its not the same exact mounting style that can effect the look and size. Hard to say without visuals.

I sold my LG for more than I paid. But I didn't buy it at retail.
The buyer was ecstatic to pay 1/5 the price the damn retailer was asking for a non-LG.
The shape was not what my Mrs wanted - hence the sale.
The next LG I bought was unmarked (again, not from retail). I am sure I could sell it as a non-LG. The jewelry shop I showed it to had no idea it was LG. They asked why it was not marked. I said I bought it in South Africa (not true). I am sure this jeweler would have bought it from me for much more than I paid.
So just don't buy retail. Buy an LG wholesale (or near wholesale) and get it mounted by a jeweler.
And never buy a non-LG as there is a good chance it will be an LG.

Osiris i love the channel unfortunatly there are bias that favor lab grown instead truths example, there are multiple/multiple machines that can test and tell the difference between lab vs natural diamonds. They are not the same, painting a picture like they are the same is not true.

The market is flooded with lab grown diamonds and no one can tell the difference.
The market is flooded with everything. Thats why if you buy natural, you get a GIA graded diamond. So you know what you are buying.
@@OsirisDiamonds I read that FTC may consider lab grown diamonds in future to be GIA graded...getting ready for natural diamonds monopoly to be dismantled. Irony is that De Beers also came out with whitebox which is their lab grown fine jewellry line 😄
Companies can try to give me a bad conscience, but the fact is, i would only be doing them a favour by buying their expensive option. The stone is the exact same, in fact its insane that we even need any type of rock to declare our love. Im gonna spend the 7000$ i saved on my down payment for a house or my future kids. I bet natural diamonds will be fazed out anyway as synthetic diamonds will get cheaper and cheaper and mining will be less acceptable.
I think that peopke who are socially aware and economically sensible enough yet still willing to pay money for a stone that is somewhat worthless, will know that a lab diamond is the better choice. The only people who say otherwise are the mining corporations and the ones influenced by their propaganda. Don’t forget about the exploitation that goes on in sed corporations.

I learned that lab diamonds are stronger then earth grown diamonds.
GIA does grade lab grown diamonds
They just don’t grade color as D through Z it’s colorless , near colorless, tinted etc
Thanks for the comment Doc. What I meant to say is, you will not find GIA lab diamonds anywhere. They claim to grade them but not one retailer has GIA certified lab diamonds. SO IGI is what you need to get comfortable with when it comes to lab.

May I ask, what experts wont buy them? You mean jewelers that sell only natural diamonds and make more profit on natural diamonds not liking them? At the end of the day, Lab diamonds are an option for others. Same as some buy moissanite or even CZ.
@@OsirisDiamonds Jewelers that sell synthetics make a much bigger profit than those that sell real diamonds. I would like to see wholesale site that offers loose lab "diamonds". Truth is they are probably coming from China in bulk at $10 per kilo.

Buying Lab diamont is a big mistake... bcuz the technology now easy determine what is real diamond or not.... 2 or 3 years from now lab diamont can be 1 dollor bcuz it considered fake or alternative diamond...... billions of age or brandnew stone can easyly determine now bcuz of the technology....
I don't think you are correct. Technology to determine whether lab or mined has nothing to do with value. Nobody here is trying to lie and try to sell a lab as a mined. The reality is it's at a great price point compared to mined and stores aren't going to make that cheap because they will lose profit. It's actually expensive to make them, it takes expensive equipment, lots of heat, and power so the price point will stay the same bc its fair in relation to mined. There are already cheap non-diamond alternatives like CZ or moissanite. A lab diamond is chemically and optically the same as a mined diamond.

Buying a lab diamond 💎 looses its value in time.. yes it cost 2,500 for a 1.0ct vs 6,000 1.0ct . But heres the thing if it’s easier and faster to make the value is not worth 2,500 down the line and now i threw my money away. Natural diamond 💎 is my choice.
There are valid points against and for them. I understand your hesitance. As I said in the video, I would make an earring or pendant if I ever wanted to upgrade. Selling natural diamonds are very frustrating as well. Its a lose-lose situation.

100% diamonds are not an investment. Very hard to sell a natural diamond as well.
@@OsirisDiamonds I've learnt!I own 2 diamond rings- mined. That I bought from a diamond dealer, / pawn shop. They were 2nd hand. As buying NEW MINED is a waste of money, too. Cos who cares if its 2nd hand- diamonds are millions of yrs old anyway!🤣.. and will still exist after we're gone.. 2nd is Ok, cheaper than than a "new ring," jewelry shop. But when I learnt about LAB diamonds- I purchased earrings and a ring. I got a far superior cut - colour- clarity and carat size for less than a mined.
