@@hotfire9038 The only way to tell the difference is by using a very expensive scanning machine which can tell how they were formed. That's it. Also, most lab-grown diamonds will be laser inscribed with a serial number which identifies them as lab-grown. This is because visually it's impossible to tell the difference.

Hi Modern Goldsmith, I'm from GEMORO, the manufacturer of the Testerossa tester you are using in your video. THANK YOU so much for providing this super informative video! 100% of what you are saying is correct. There are two types of diamonds, ones that come from below the earth (mined), and ones that come from above the earth (lab grown). Both are 100% diamonds.
I did want to add some more to the info provided to your viewers. First of all, when using our tester, it is important to hold the ring in one hand, while you hold the tester in the other. While the tester works the way you used it, by holding the ring it completes an electrical circuit through your body and allows the METAL ALERT function to work. While it very rarely occurs in nature, diamonds in general aren't electrically conductive, yet moissanite is electrically conductive. When testing for diamonds, we test for the stones thermal conductivity. When testing for moissanite, we are testing to see if the stone is electrically conductive. We use both thermal and electrical conductivity tests simultaneously to screen out moissanite, since moissanite is both thermally conductive and electrically conductive. Unfortunately, metal is electrically conductive as well, so if you accidentally hit a prong on the setting, if you're not holding the ring, the stone could appear to test as moissanite. If you are holding the ring when doing this, the metal alert feature will activate to warn you that you hit the prong.
There are two methods for producing a lab grown diamond, HPHT and CVD. This is important because HPHT diamonds are also electrically conductive, while most CVD diamonds aren't. What this means is that if you test an HPHT lab grown diamond, don't be surprised if it tests as moissanite since they are both electrically conductive! Most all lab grown diamonds have a laser inscription on the stones girdle that has the stones lab grading report on it, that identifies it as a lab grown diamond. When viewed with a 20x loupe or magnifier or microscope, the report number will start with LG, which stands for Lab Grown.

Thanks for all this info! I recently purchased a HPHT LG diamond and your tester was used and it did test as moissanite. I ended up going to another jeweler who also used your tester and it came back moissanite. I was kinda freaking out tbh. The jeweler had just happened to purchase a brand new tester that had just arrived the day before and he was still learning how to use it and he did use it on my stone and it did come back as a lab grown HPHT which calmed my nerves after. I do wish that more jewelers have this knowledge about your testers bc the first guy didn’t. I’m glad the 2nd jeweler was aware and that is why he upgraded his testers with all the new technology nowadays with stones.

@LauraSim407 Laura your lab grown diamond test as a moissanite because it's electrically conductive the same as moissanite where natural diamonds are not its the easiest way to identify lab grown vs natural if your lab grown test as a moissanite that means it's a lab grown diamond and electrically conductive when they say there is no difference don't believe anybody even the guy in this video didn't use the tester right if he would have the test would of came up moissanite for the lab grown but it's simple to understand why the natural diamond market has been in existence for ages there was no way a company could create a identical diamond that would mix in with natural diamonds and diminish their value so lab grown diamonds are made with boron a simple electric conductive chemical it makes identifying both extremely easy now a 1700 royal diamond can't be mistaken for a lab grown fraud claiming to be the same everybody in the diamond industry knows this but the public like always gets mislead into purchasing a knock off product that has little to no value but the sad part is your still paying thousands of dollars for a lab grown when they are practically worthless and will continue to decline in value as more and more are made where natural diamonds have held value historically and currently in terms of investment wise a natural diamond is 100× better especially if you hand it down to future generations where a lab grown diamond if it's passed down to future generations they are just going to tell them when they sell it it's not valuable at all
All these people complaining that it's not a real diamond. Sorry to burst your bubble, but lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. It's like comparing glacier ice vs freezer ice, THEY'RE BOTH ICE. Lab grown is the way to go these days anyways, all this mining is damaging the earth.

We chose lab grown over mined diamond. The jeweler was unhappy with us for not buying a "natural" stone from him, but put it in my ring. He refused to give any warranty for his work and told me my stone would break within a year. It's been 15 years, and it looks just as lovely.

My lab grown diamond is the most gorgeous rock I've ever seen and, to be honest, it's brighter and clearer than 90% of the natural diamonds we looked at when discussing engagement. I'm glad I chose to go the lab grown route. We saved money and my oval cut lab grown diamond is the most beautiful rock I've ever seen. Even now, two years after our engagement, I'm sitting on the couch with my hand in a beam of sunlight, watching it sparkle. I never thought I'd have a decent man, let alone one that would put a ring on it so, seeing such a nice ring on my finger is like seeing a unicorn on my couch. I can't help but stare in disbelief! Haha.

I chose the cheaper option with lab grown diamonds because he originally wanted to get a natural diamond priced over 10 grand but, go ahead and make the wrong assumption that it was I who demanded the rock. @jazzmenrain thank you! I'm very lucky to be married to him, now! We actually eloped a little after my original comment, and we just celebrated our one year anniversary. We said "Fuck the wedding," we only cared about the marriage, so we signed papers with our officiant, filed at the courthouse, and had a hell of a catered kegger with our friends and family before running off on our honeymoon. Best. Husband. Ever!
My husband surprised me with a larger engagement ring. We opted for lab grown this time. The clarity and sparkle are out of this world. Weeks later and I still can't take my eyes off it. And we were able get a much larger stone for our money.

I got a lab-grown diamond when I got my engagement ring 5 years ago. I love it- it’s so great to know that no one was killed, and no mining was done to get it. It is engraved on the side with ‘lab grown’ and the IGI registration number. So there is no cover-up trying to make it appear to be a mined diamond.
I swear this is the only video on this subject on yt. Everyone else is so biased and uninformative
It may be but he is lying about the Moisanitte being a real diamond. It is not a mined diamond or a man-made diamond. It is s diamond simulant just like the CZ,Yag and many other stones they sell to look like diamonds. Also, Moissanite is not a 10 on the MOHS scale and not the correct specific gravity of a diamond.. Many of the Moisannite do not test diamond as well. What would he have done if it did not register diamond? He did not tell you that Moisanitte has a number laser engraved on the girld and the man-made diamonds as well and it is on the certs sent with the stones.
@gregglyell1601 Good job you are correct that their is a difference but Moissanite is a seperate stone than diamond when people think lab grown diamond sometimes they think it's a moissanite but that's not the case here it's a lab grown diamond and will test as a moissanite especially with that tester that he's using but he didn't use it correctly the difference between lab grown and natural that nobody talks about is their chemical structure natural diamonds are not electricly conductive where lab grown diamonds are that's why you get a moissanite reading on lab grown diamonds they made it that way to simply be able to identify both
I stayed away from lab grown stones because the few times I tried using them years ago, customers said no, they wanted real. Recently have be learning how the acceptance of lab grown stones has become much more acceptable as more customers are becoming educated as well. This was a brilliant test. Thanks!

It has the same properties, same chemical makeup, structure etc. I never understood why mined diamonds are so much more valuable than lab created outside of vanity and the absurd markups created by a monopolized diamond industry. They are unethical too

That's because a lab grown diamond is identical down to the atomic level. As a chemist with engineering experience in chemical vapor deposition I guarantee they ARE IDENTICAL. The best way to prove a diamond is"natural"would be to show all the inclusions and defects only seen with a microscope. Ask the lab to put in a spec or inclusion in thjer perfect lab grown diamond and you could sell it to a chump at a higher price saying "look, it's REAL naturaldiamnd, it's got a defect" LOL

I have a lab-grown diamond engagement ring, I love the fact that I have a conflict-free, higher clarity, carat size and with fewer imperfections for a fraction of the cost compared to an earth-grown diamond. I love that I can wear it guilt-free and man is it stunning!

Of course they won't! In time people will want real diamonds again and the price will sky rocket due to the demand (as minning will stop the prices will go up) you buy fake diamonds (moissanite, CS, glass) then they will be cheap because your buying a cheap stone. Its like gold rings! A plated gold ring tho it looks like gold will never be worth what a REAL solid gold ring is worth! Jewellers will tell you go for moissanite because it cost them pennies and they make hundreds/thousands from silly uneducated people.

To me, lab grown diamonds are a no-brainer. To those that claim that mined diamonds are better, allow me to remind you that pearls for the last 100 years have been semi artificial 🤷 (it's still the pearl oysters doing the work, but they are artificially seeded)

Diamonds don’t cause any suffering. That movie was highly inaccurate. I live in a 3rd world country where diamonds are mined and they’ve created jobs, built roads, school etc. A lot of the revenues also go towards caring for the environment and helping animals. So I don’t appreciate this video one bit. I think more research was needed because I doubt he knows much.

Has anyone here complaining about a lab diamonds value, ever tried selling a so-called real genuine earth grown diamond? Probably not. That’s because I have a 2 CT earth grown VVS1 diamond GIA and have tried selling it and guess what? I have gotten pathetic offers compared for how much I actually paid for it. Do not buy an earth grown diamond thinking you will have a better resale value. As I’ve learned the hard way- All diamonds have crap resale value.. so don’t even try to fall for that. And yes I agree with this video 100%. Definitely not buying an earth grown diamond again! Please don’t waste your hard earned money on this money making monopoly and control which DeBeers has.. wait let me ask you something, when you look at a diamond can you tell if it’s GIA or IGI certified? A 2ct diamond isn’t really rare there’s plenty of them for dealers to buy from other dealers for the wholesale price. You went to a store and paid the retail mark up and now you’re upset that you can’t get any dealers to pay you more than the wholesale price of the diamond. Well newsflash mr born yesterday, like every commodity in every industry on the earth, the retail price is not what industry people pay. As far as your dumb question about whether you can tell by looking at it if it’s certified, obviously that is not the point of the certification. Diamonds vary wildly in value and without the cert, and untrained person like you can’t tell what they’re looking at to know if they’re worth their price. A nice diamond is a nice diamond with or without a certificate but a shit diamond can easily be passed off as a good one to customers without a certificate providing an expert opinion as to its quality.
You will also absolutely get a better resale price for a certified earth mined diamond than the same diamond that was lab grown. That’s just a fact. Will you get 90% of the retail value by selling it back to a wholesale dealer? No obviously not. You definitely can by selling it directly to a consumer tho. But that’s hard because you don’t personally know anyone buying a diamond. If only you could find someone to do that for you for a few... oh wait! you think your watch or your car will get full retail value when you go to sell it, if you sell to a dealer? Obviously not. It’s the same with literally everything. You complaining about it just indicates you don’t understand how the world works.

Just because they have more carbon doesn’t make them more of a natural diamond opposed to a mined one that came from the EARTH and not a lab. Mined diamonds are what they are composed of alone with no help or influence. The whole meaning of natural is something growing, processing, or coming about without the interference or control of mankind, besides a man’s sperm reproducing a human being which is an entire different species/property however you understand what I’m insinuating. Hence; photosynthesis.

Not necessarily true. They may a small piece of a mined diamond to start with.
@@jamasawilson7546 Um, every diamond has impurities, but by definition diamond is pure Carbon in a crystalline format. It is these impurities that determines how diamonds are graded, the purer the higher the value. Lab grown diamonds overall have less impurities than mined diamonds. So yes, less impurity does make it "more" diamond.

DTOWN King LJ 6 I would say that would probably be the biggest. As more lab grown diamonds are manufactured there is a chance the prices will drop. That being said, the idea that natural diamonds hold their value is also untrue and an illusion sold to us by the diamond industry.

Thanks so much for this video! For my 25th anniversary my husband wanted to get me a really nice diamond. I just couldn’t allow him to spend that much money on a gift for me. After a lot of research I went with a lab created diamond. We were able to get a beautiful ring to commemorate our 25th anniversary and go on a wonderful trip with the money we saved. It is nice to know that even though we saved money I do in fact have a diamond!

I don't know if maybe it's the quality of lab grown supplied, but I work for a jeweller who contracts to a major jewellery retailer. We deal with hundreds of repairs a week and we find we can quench a natural diamond and apply a lot of direct heat to them no problem, but we treat lab grown diamonds like sapphires and find they are more likely to crack when quenching or applying a lot of heat, so we treat them like they're not a diamond. But they certainly look like a diamond 🙂

They're laser scribed as LG then serial number, always ask for certificate and use a tool to check the serial number to you're getting what you want and the right one.
@@rodey6594 True. But I think this tool to see the serial number is not readily available to the average consumer. The jeweler uses a device that looks like a type of microscope.

It took me about ten years, but I finally bought a lab diamond for my wife and I was able to afford what I would have never had if it was mined.
I say ten years because I have been paying attention and I am noticing how people are slowly transitioning. First, my cousin who is an avid lover of diamonds and has resources as well. She purchased a lab diamond years ago and what is interesting is that instead of concealing that detail, she brings it up as if proud that it is a lab diamond.
She feels better knowing there is no risk slavery or abusive practices were applied, and no pristine land was violated and destroyed in the process. And, hers is a CVD, so it is pure, 100% carbon, colorless and absolutely stunning. In fact, the only way to know would be spending tens of thousands of dollars in equipment most jewelers do not have, to then analyze the gases inside the stone to figure out if it is mined (gas compositions 100 miles inside the Earth, or nitrogen and methane used in CVD. Yet, it s nothing different than a diamond.
My analogy is that 100 years ago, gentlemen bought flowers for ladies on the street, from girls who picked up the flowers from nature, in other words, their local fields. Now, they buy them in stores that get them from green houses, controlled environments, so they are bigger and in custody while they grow and with fertilizers from bags instead of natural top soils....Nevertheless, they are BOTH flowers, natural flowers, one is not monitored and therefore it is random and the risk makes it less likely that a perfect flower is found, the other is closely watched and protected from diseases, etc. They are both flowers and no lady would ever think twice. And, yes, I am sure that some scientist can test them both and discover the one from the valley/field based on the nutrients and composition, but one is not less a flower than the other.
Same with water, you can make ice from the freezer or go outside to the lake and get the ice naturally from the weather. Any idiot knows one will show tap water with fluoride when tested and the other is rain water with some impurities from the lake. THEY ARE BOTH ICE, made form water. Different ingredients, which are not necessary to call it ice are present in both, but what makes it ice, FROZEN WATER, is in each of them.
In my case, our diamond was made with care for my wife, and I got to choose exactly how I wanted it to be, look, cut and size. It is as unique...it is not less valuable, is just that DeBeers hide/control/limit the supply thus artificially raising the market price. So, I would rather pay for what a lab diamond costs (significantly less nowadays and the price seemed to stabilize) because there is labor involved, there is also craftsmanship by perusing the stone, deciding how to cut, polishing, the equipment and energy to make it, etc. We know how much it costs to be profitable to them, rather than be taken for a fool and charge ten times more viciously for a mined when we know it costs actually less since the miner is a pauper who makes $5 a week and is not heavy to ship it to Europe since you could even fit hundreds in your pockets. Hence, I am afraid it costs less to mine a diamond than to produce it, but at least the lab diamond people do not betray our trust.

Today, I bought a lab-grown diamond for my future fiancee and I was initially feeling iffy about buying a lab-grown diamond. Once I got over myself and realized it literally doesn't matter, I could enjoy the fact that I bought a near perfect, 1 carat diamond for way cheaper than any mined-diamond with similar clarity/color would have been. Best of all, she's going to love it because it isn't about the diamond or where it came from anyway, it's about who is giving it to her and what it symbolizes.
Also, I didn't buy this diamond for its resale value. Who the fuck buys an engagement ring and worries about resale value? I thought you wanted to be with this person forever? I bought it because I love who I'm giving it to and personally, I think it's absolutely beautiful. On top of all of that, it was way cheaper than a mined-diamond!
So basically, my point is quit worrying about whatever "stigma" you think will come from buying a lab-grown diamond and just do it. They're beautiful, they're real, and fuck what anyone else thinks.

It's literally the societal standards yelling in your head "if it's not natural it's not ~real~" all for you to fork over a lot more money for less bang. The fact that it comes with additional pluses like less environmental impact and no conflict makes it an even better buy. Thanks for this video. My engagement ring is a mined diamond in a solitaire setting which I've had for over 20 years, and it's beautiful. I love it. I've been following the development of lab-grown diamonds for 10 years, and once there were jewelry-grade diamonds available, I purchased my first lab-grown diamond ring in 14K Rose Gold band with small 1 pt diamonds for a special teenager. I think it's a great option. However, producing a lab-grown diamond uses expends a lot of energy; it's not exactly earth-friendly either! So, mined and lab-grown both have benefits and drawbacks depending on where and how the mined diamond is sourced. Both are beautiful! I can say that lab-grown diamonds have amazing scintillation. They are of high color /clarity, and the cut proportions are ideal, even on the tiny diamonds. A Moissanite is not a diamond or diamond simulant, and it's easy to tell the difference between a diamond (mined or lab-grown) and moissanite by the appearance of a moissanite faceting; it has less scintillation than a good cut diamond but possibly more fire depending on many different aspects of the moissanite. It's a rare, natural crystal. I don't like it, but that's the great thing about choice, we all have one. It's pretty petty to be arguing over them.

So I’m a huge fan of the lab grown diamond, I work at Jared’s and they’re pretty awesome and very popular. The resale value is low though, they are definitely for the couple that cares more about the sentiment than the long term value of the stone.

The difference between the CVD and HPHT Lab Grown Diamond is the CVD Lab grown diamond will react to a diamond detector pen and the HPHT Lab Grown Diamond will not, making the HPHT Lab Diamond cheaper than the CVD Lab Grown Diamond....

That's a very brilliant question, Amanda! This is completely normal and nothing to worry about. The tester tests a diamond by its heat conductivity. As you rightly pointed out, There are two methods to grow a lab diamond one is HPHT and the other is CVD. The diamond grown by the CVD method is a type 2a diamond which tests as diamonds in the pen tester but the one grown by HPHT is a type 2 in which the arrangement of impurity in the material makes it semi-conductive at times. And this also happens in the natural diamond of type 2 but since they are very rare in natural the pen tester was a safe device to use. But for lab-grown, the pen tester is not an ideal device to test it as diamond. However, the latest technology pen-tester detects an HPHT stone as a diamond. For assurance, you can send it to the lab which has more sophisticated equipment to test, and also there is a lab report for the bigger stone out of there that says it's a lab-grown diamond.
The day after our 17th anniversary, the natural diamond on my wife's engagement ring was lost when a prong broke. Lab diamond prices have come down tremendously to the point where we're replacing her stone with a LG diamond (1.27 ctw, E, VS1, ideal cut) for around $600! We're thrilled this option exists! Her new stone is larger and has better grades than the original (though we're still searching the house because there's nothing like the FIRST ring).
These advantages (plus a much lower price tag and more color reflection) are why we chose a moissanite ring!
When people ask about my lab grown diamond being real, I explain the process (in a nutshell) then always compare it to a baby. Baby’s can be fertilized in a lab and they are still real babies. As long as the same components are made to make a diamond, just as a baby, then they are both just as real lab or traditionally grown. That’s my take on it when some people want to turn their noses to it. I think lab grown diamonds are fantastic! Thanks for the video 😁

The babies example usually gets weird looks so I compare it to something like vegetables. They can be grown out in the wild, but we can also grow them in stuff like hydroponics. The end result is the same; a tomato.
One positive note about lab grown diamond is that the price is base on the work it takes to create your own diamond as compared to natural diamond which are wildly abundance but artificially suppressed to create scarcity.

You are not buying the same thing even though you might think you are buying the same thing on a discount.
I like the fact that lab grown are just more humane, often look more dazzling than a natural stone, and you get way more stone for the price. Makes for a happy future wife. She definitely wasn't expecting the one I gave her, she was stunned and loves it.

Lab grown diamonds aren't environmentally friendly either. This video doesn't mention how much energy it takes to make them and how much pollution those labs produce. I'm not saying one is better but to make a decision you have to weigh all of the pros and all of the cons.

This video convinced me to try a ring with lab-grown diamonds. In my small collection of rings, I only have one diamond ring set with 15 channel set rb diamonds, 1.05 ctw. I had it appraised right before the pandemic and was pleased when the jeweler named a price which was exactly what I paid for the ring 13 years ago. So, sometimes, diamonds really are forever. I've had rings with small CZ's (I don't go for gaudy or ostentatious bling) but after several years, the CZ's have tended to fade, showing scratches and pits, and one turned cloudy. So I'm going to give lab-grown diamonds a whirl and see how it goes. To my mind, a diamond, is a diamond, and I don't want someone shedding their blood to get it on my finger.

Yes, if you want to buy something that is going to worth nothing when you sell it again. Natural diamonds are investiment, lab-grown are scam.
jc neto natural diamonds are worth essentially nothing when you try to sell them anyway, usually less than 20% of its purchased value. If you buy a natural diamond for $20,000, you would probably get $4,000 for it when you try to sell it again. Meanwhile you can get the same diamond lab grown for ~$7,500, so your savings still far outweigh the loss if we assume a lab grown resale value of $0 (unrealistic).

Rubies will most likely test as a sapphire as long as color doesn't factor into the tester's reading. Rubies and sapphires are both made of corundum, the color is really the only difference.
