    I have a chop and flip with a 250 gallon round fiber glass tank and a 55 gallon RFF with potential to have two more IBC grow beds.
    So I have a sump tank that starts off as 83 gallons (but I can expand to 250 gallons to account for 3 grow beds), 55 gallon blue drum RFF, 250 gallon round Fiberglass fish tank, and 1 IBC grow bed of hydroton where the water part is 50gallons.
    83+55+250+50 =438
    This totals to 438 gallons of water. Divide by two hours to get 219 gallons per hour.
    To account for head height and bends of pipes and hoses I think I should upgrade and get a 250 gallon per hour pump.
    Split flow system
    Would this pump be enough or would you recommend a different brand?

    Great video with good info!!what name brand is the 2700 gph pump? as im building a RDWC system with 4 five gallon hydrobuckets with about 12 to 15 feet total run of 3/4 pvc pipe im going on the high side 15feet.thanks for the good info

    The "just buy a large one" approach might be the most American suggestion one could get... For people who are really concerned about the right size for THEIR system there should be a lot more questions to ask yourself before you go out and buy a pump: System size and required flow rate, required head hight, tubing friction, part failure mitigation and so on. Adjusting a pump down on the "turn knob" the video showed is plainly bad advice. On small pumps (i.e. up to 2500gal/h) that is usually a mechanical resistance you add to reduce the flow - which means you are wasting a large percentage of your power intake. Even electronic regulation (on more sofisticated and more expensive pumps) is usually a net efficiency drop. A correctly sized pump is a key factor of your systems overall power consumption and should be picked really carefully. A 1000 gal pump can range between 40W and about 100W - so choose wisely and don't constrain your flow.

      This is geared toward the home grower feeding their family, not a business or commercial setup. A 2,000 GPH pump is cheap and will cover your bases. You’re not wrong about certain points but it’s not practical to calculate head loss etc on a system with 1 fish tank in my opinion. Just want people to get started

    Hi! following...
    i've had a pond with carp in it unfortunately the water source became les over the years. Now im trying to build a solar powered system that keeps the water moving airates and filtrates it. Is aquaponics the right choice for me or is there a more efficient system for filtering my water to replace new freshwater. Plants are not the priority at all and could potentialy be left out.

    An airlift would be a better choice.

      Depends what you’re doing but air lifts are great

      I am running my pumps on my diy solar generators so I use pumps that are eco and good on watts am learning that you don't need to buy these energy guzzling pumps am running my Aquaponics system off grid all on solar

      Am looking at building air lift pumps to ,I think we have an overkill mentality here in the states when it comes to equipment they didn't have all these powerfully pumps 1000s of years ago when aquaponics begin and they did just fine also In poor countries their systems run fine to and they don't have all the latest and greatest equipment
