"I loved playing in Cleveland Stadium. They had these freezing cold locker rooms under the bowels of that old rusty stadium, like the Roman Coliseum. And then you walked up this tunnel like you were coming out of a dungeon and you could smell the hot dogs and the beer from their lunatic fans. The weather would be zero degrees and the wind whipping off the lake. And as you came out there was this beautiful natural grass football field where collisions were going to be happening all afternoon. The hair would stand up on your spine. I loved every minute of it." Jack Lambert --- A true football player.
MY CHILDHOOD IDOL!!! I loved every second of the Steelers defensive stands, but my focus was on the play of #58!!! As a Philly kid, my exposure back in the late 70s-early 80s was through NFL Films, league game day highlights, and magazines... I wore nothing but 58, in every sport. I'll never lose the excitement of watching Jack Lambert play football!!! NEVER!!! And I'll always associate # 58, with being the biggest, baddest, meanest MFER who ever walked this friggin' planet!!! A Lunatic, for life!!!
I attended Jack Lambert Football Camp three years, it was an awesome experience. I played nose tackle, and I remember Jack telling me that I was a crazy kid, hitting others like we had pads on during scrimmage when it was light contact without pads. He told me to tone it down, and I said that I was toned down and that I could show him my full speed if he wanted to see it. He told me that if I was able to grow into my position physically, that I would be a pro. I ended up being a pipsqueak when everybody else grew and filled out but as second string, I still saw some playing time as a small lineman, and I still was able to compete like a big guy, and I attribute it to the training that I received at the Jack Lambert Football Camp. I am a life long Browns fan, but I will always be a fan of Jack. Great memories!
The sheer passion and anger that Jack Lambert played with, made him my favorite player. Dwight White also played with that passion and anger, and I loved watching him aswell.
Awful how they have changed this once tough sport into something that doe not even resemble football. Not even allowed to hit a QB anymore, and when they do, the QB's just whine. Brady whines if anyone touches him !!. Never saw Bradshaw, Staubach or Stabler whine if hit. Disgusting what they did to the game. Lambert was the real thing, a tough player.
Ahhh the great Steelers of the 70s. I fell in love with football back then as a little kid. Loved Mean Joe, Ham, Blount, Franco, Bradshaw etc.., but Lambert was, is, and will always be my favorite player of all time. The only other that is even close is Ronnie Lott. This guy constantly blew up plays in both the rushing and passing defense. He was everywhere. What he lacked in size he had in stamina and being rangy. What he lacked in strength he made up in football intellegence, drive and heart. He was a smart football player and never missed where he was suppose to be. He was tough, mean and was the enforcer of that team. He was feared and reviled and was one bad MF. He backed down from nobody and nobody ever fucked with him. My girl offered to buy me a Steelers jersey four years ago. Being ten years younger than me she was talking about Roethlisberger, Polamalu, Harrison etc. I took a look in the catalog and they had the throwback jerseys. I got my second jersey ever. Home black, #58. Lambert. Now it needs his autograph. Its fun being a kid at 50. Damn I miss this era, that defense and Jack Lambert
there's no such thing as the boogie man. that's kid stuff. crazy stuff. I haven't checked under my bed for a boogie man since I've been an adult, and I'll be damned if I start again.
I grew up a Packers fan in the 70's but quickly became a Steelers fan as I loved to be a part of a winning team (Steelers) vs. a horrible constant loser (Packers). My favorite player to this day is the legendary Jack Lambert. Two guys remind me of him today. Luke Kuechly and Blake Martinez of the drum roll..... Packers.
Hi, I've always been a Pittsburgh Fan. Steelers,Pirates,Penguins and Panthers. But I did love watching Lynn Dickey throw the football. I remember rooting for the Packers in the playoffs against the Cowboys. When the Packers had Lynn Dickey as Quarterback in the "70's".
as a young Airman stationed at Tanagra Air Force Base in Greece In 1976 I met him as he traveled through our little 42 man munition support squadron at this remote Air Force site. He was traveling with the USO. He and Carl Eller and a few others sat and talked with the guys for a hour or two that evening . Everyone seemed to know him . I had no idea who he was nor the other players. I am not a sports fan but every time I hear this mans name I think back to that night in a desolate spot in a remote valley in Greece
The real truth the steelers front four and the steelers secondary. Now put jack Lambert in the Chicago bears defense and put dick butkus in the steelers defense. Jack Lambert had the privilege of playing around great black players dick butkus did not even with gale Sayers. What's all the hype. The 1972 season before Lambert there was LB name henry Davis. Super Bowl 8 Lambert didn't even play and the Vikings only scored 6 points without Lambert. Sports writers don't always give you the whole story. Now don't get mad when I say this the black players made those steelers great on offense & defense. Lambert was a great player but so was dick butkus , but there's a difference, and that difference was and always will be the black players and I don't have to call there name you know who they are.
It was the front four and the steelers secondary of black players , now put dick butkus in that same defense and put Lambert in the bears defense. The black players made this 🏈 team great no doubt about it. Lambert is to much hype on a team with great black players on offense & defense. The pittsburgh steelers teams are the most talented black players in the history of any sport, not the new England Patriots. Jack Lambert was right when he said quarterbacks should wear 👗s he was ahead of his time in saying that! Hello tom Brady where is another steelers great LB Greg Lloyd to hit tom Brady for me.
I was starting qb at UNC and I couldn't agree more. We had it made and could get away with NO CONTACT until game day. Dress size is about a Extra Large at 6'4, 196.
WHAT!!!!! They dont even know how to tackle today!!!!! #58 was a pure linebacker and knew how to tackle!!! I wore #58 and played Middle linebacker cuz of him. NOBODY today can tackle--they throw their heads at you ,never wrap up or use their arms!!
No one can take a thing away from Lambert. He was everything everyone says he was. He was the man in the middle on one of the greatest defenses in history. He was fierce. He was the intimidator. He led the team in tackles. BUT!! "One of the greatest defenses in history." He was surrounded by all pros. He didn't have to worry about the men beside him, in front of him, or the men behind him doing their jobs. Now consider Dick Butkus. Was on a team that couldn't get out of it's own way. Defensive player of the year when the Bears only won one game. The greatest intimidator of them all. Jack was great--one of the true greats--but he didn't leave a trail of broken, bloody bodies in his wake. Butkus did.
I played linebacker in high school at 5'10" 133 LBS ........ I was tiny but lifted ton's of weights and ran Cross Country ........ however, I grew up watching Jack Lambert ........... and he is the one who inspired me to play with "reckless abandon" ............ watching him play was part of the reason I was tough and fearless and just wanted to hit someone on every play ....... by the way ...... I wasn't as near as tuff as I viewed myself to be ......... HA
In the '74 preseason, inside linebacker Henry Davis suffered a career ending neck injury. He had been one of the few pro-bowl selections for the Steelers in '73. This incident may have launched Lambert's career, but Davis was a great talent who didn't lose his job. A true NFL "what if".
I am an Eagles fan so the seventies were Bad , but teams like the steelers and players like Lambert made me a Football fan thank you mr. vampire on cleats
After his football career, Lambert became a game warden at a park in Western Pa. Imagine walking through the woods and coming across Jack Lambert? He even scares the bears away.
"He looks like Count Dracula in cleats." That's the best description I ever heard. When I went to Kent State, he was and still is a legend. Someone once told me that after practice, he would go up to a wall on the outside of the field house and run his head into the wall ten times before hitting the showers. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, but I wouldn't bet against it not being true.
I would!! He was too 'scientific', too formulaic and too analytically-based of a player for such childish folklore to be true. One of the main reasons he was drafted by the Steelers was that Noll saw in him a 'scientific mindset', insofar as the 'laws of football' existed. As all of these specials about him say, he was a great 'football player' as opposed to being just a great 'athlete'. Jack was known for his incredible memory, and how he used that to analyze the line-set of each play and how to devise in real time the necessary adjustments to the line to counter-act it. The difference is like playing chess on a 2D field (board) compared to waging war on a real field with TIME passing and limited to so many seconds, and in the ability to bring the mental attributes of analysis, devising a solution and then EXECUTION of said solution in REAL-TIME!! I grew up in Pgh and Lambert was the epitome of a rational, solution-based player. I think, as much as those stories grew out of respect/fear of him, they were just 'urban legend'. Glad he came to the Steel City!!
i remember jack lambert, with bradshaw, franco and blier. the best team in their time. lambert was an animal with brains; one of a kind linebacker...rr
FOOTBALL IN ALIQUIPPA , EVERY MIDDLE LINEBACKER IN WESTERN PA WANTED TO BE AS NUTS AS OUR HERO JACK LAMBERT , ONE BAD ASS LINEBACKER. THOSE WERE THE DAYS
If I had to coach a football team, and I could only pick one player, Jack Lambert would be my choice. He was a true student of the game, practically living in the film room from the day after he was drafted until he could play no more. Opposing players swore that Lambert must have been in their huddle. His first step was always in the right direction.
The sheer passion and anger that Jack Lambert played with, made him my favorite player, along with Dwight White, who also played with passion and sheer anger.
I was a big Raider fan in the 70's , Kenny Stabler was my hero and the 'Immaculate Reception' was like a knife in my gut. That was THE single play that launched the Steelers into prime time. I digress however. Yes I was a Raider fan but I was also a big Jack Lambert fan. I needed a new hero behind the line after Butkus packed it in and I didn't have to wait too long before the big man from Buzzard's Breath started patrolling the Steeler defensive line. The AFC owned the 70's. Kansas City Baltimore Dolphins Steelers Raiders
STEELERS since 1947! I was TWO!! Dad had me on his lap and we listened to every minute of every game together. Fortunately for him I was a tomboy!!! I even had one of the ORIGINAL Terrible Towels..
After watching the most over-rated LB in NFL history, Brian Urlacher, for his entire career, and then remember JL and the way he played, it's no contest. Give me JL, LT and Dick Butkus as my all time linebackers
No doubt, the trophy's name is appropriate. I used to love watching Butkus. He was the prototype for that era and that of Joe Schmidt and Sam Huff, but he's been surpassed. Ray Lewis was a much better athlete, just as intimidating, and just as hard hitting in an era where rodeoing a running back's head as a tackle isn't allowed and speed and quickness are absolute necessities. On the other hand, LT and Hendricks haven't been overtaken in this era.
Wrong !!! Pound for Pound Jack Lambert was Much Better than Ray Lewis. The Only Thing Ray Lewis was better at was Murdering a man in a Street Fight in a Bar and getting away with it. Jack Lambert ANY DAY of the Week !!!
Jack Lambert is and will always be the strength and the true identify. of how the Pittsburgh Steelers Defense and Intimidation will always be. He stated in one statement that we are the intimidars and we will not be intimated
I've watched football now for almost 50 years is incredible to see the evolution of the game or the the evolution Jack Lambert stands there is words to describe individual accomplishments in life immortal is one that I place on Jack Lambert he is immortal among mortal men I can't accept mediocrity in my life when I see Jack Lambert
some players hit like their bodies are made of steel regardless of what they look like -- Lambert was one of those guys. Anyone who played ball knows what i'm talking about.
Lambert came to an Offense/Defense football camp I went to in 77. Talk..slender..nothing but muscle. You could hear him yelling across the field at the linebackers..
Reporter interviewing Terry Bradshaw "Hows your injured shoulder?" Terry: "Well not great. I can throw but right now I'm only throwing about as hard as Brian Sipe." hahahahhaha. The Steelers owned the Browns through the 70's.
Good Lord, 1/2 of this video is that guy telling a single story (4:05)!! Took him four minutes to tell a 30 second story! (And it wasn't even a good one)! Lol Go Get'em JACK!
WH Pierce he is doing well, he owns 80 acres in western Pennsylvania and volunteers as a game warden. Today he prefers to stay out of the limelight and just be an average guy.
A friend of mine tried out for the browns at the urging of Doug deiken, ex browns player,,, my friend was a great power lifter and heavyweight boxer, turned out he was plenty strong enough but not enough football experience, that evening they all went to the bar where some Steelers players were also in town for Sunday’s game, jack lambert was running his mouth, along with a few other players, my friend never backed down from any fight, this is where lambert and two other Steelers got knocked the fuck out, by one guy, My friend always said jack lambert wasn’t that tough
Yeah and we’re supposed to believe you. Thanks for the Fairy Tale Story. I believe that Story like I believe “Jack in the Bean Stalk” is a True Story. Hey, but thanks for the laugh lol !!!
pizza with pineapple crust jack lambert and the Steelers were incredible for along time, that’s true and I’m sure lambert was ten times better at football the my friend, and would have ran right over him if they played against each other,,, he wasn’t a football player , but he was a power lifter who could bench press over 600 pounds, and he was a street fighter as well as a boxer, And whether you believe me or not , oh Well, too bad. This actually happened to your hero I’m sorry, I wish I new the name of the other steeler he knocked out after lambert, I’d sure as hell tell you , so you get your feelings hurt over him too...
@@johnbailey2024 i really don't care. I came here to watch jack Lambert not listen to some old kook ramble on about some random hercules and his rendition of the oddysey
I love young people always saying players wouldn't make it today. The difference then and now, is today they look for 40 time cones, yet look at the bust that are great athletes. Give me a guy that works his but off hits hard and relentless. Butkus was the perfect example. Football players are soft now. Is Tom Brady the best athletic QB? But he's the best. John Elway I guess couldn't play today either? He is probably the best ever. He threw a ball that could break fingers. No one throws that hard anymore. Many Superbowls without the talent because of him.

Jack played when he was well. Jack played when he was hurt. He played and gave it his all, all of the time.
To this day, Lambert is my all-time favorite football player EVER.
the most intimiding figure in the nfl for me growing up
JACK AND THE WHOLE TEAM IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE GREATEST"""IN SUPPER BOWL HISTORY. ...........!!!

alumbo, thanks for the oft-overlooked info. Henry Davis is like the Wally Pipp to Lambert's Lou Gehrig.
The best quote I ever heard about Jack Lambert was, "Most guys use tape to hold up their socks. Jack Lambert uses thumb tacks."
My FAVORITE STEELER EVER!!! Also BEST D-MAN EVER!!!
I grew up in upstate NY. I only ever cared about two sports teams...the Boston Red Sox and the Pittburgh Steelers!!
That's went football was truly played right hail to #58 jack Lambert a true legend football player !!
...and you'd damn well better believe I'd be a Pittsburgh Steeler...best HOF line ever.

The more I watch the more I love
One of the very best...EVER!
Jack Lambert is and will always be the strength and the true identify. of how the Pittsburgh Steelers Defense and Intimidation will always be. He stated in one statement that we are the intimidars and we will not be intimated
Wonder what that locker room would of been like knowing your teammates are going to kneel. How about throwing Romanowski in that team .
ALL" HEART! !!
Became a game warden after his nfl career. Could you imagine being stopped by him?
I know he probably scares the bears away by just scowling at them.
Best football 60's-80's
This how walter payton probably would have played the middle linebacker position, had he done so. Intense !!!
Professor x WALTER PAYTON IS LIKE JACK BOTH WERE VERY INTENSE! SPECIAL GREATNESS""
They called him "Mean Smilin' Jack" !!!
some players hit like their bodies are made of steel regardless of what they look like -- Lambert was one of those guys. Anyone who played ball knows what i'm talking about.
Soo much Love!!!!!!!!!!
Quarterbacks would have nightmares about jack Lambert Tom Brady wouldn’t survive on hit delivered by jack lambert
Or Greg Lloyd# 95 9 to 5 tom Brady get a real job !
Top 5 of all time along with Butkus, Ray Lewis, Singletary, and Nitschke
And what about Willie Lanier.
Lambert came to an Offense/Defense football camp I went to in 77. Talk..slender..nothing but muscle. You could hear him yelling across the field at the linebackers..
Thanks for sharing that story Archie Griffin
Reporter interviewing Terry Bradshaw "Hows your injured shoulder?" Terry: "Well not great. I can throw but right now I'm only throwing about as hard as Brian Sipe." hahahahhaha. The Steelers owned the Browns through the 70's.
I mm wish Jack played now.. he'd rupture Odell Beckham's spleen
that More brains in yer stomach that in yer head line was also told by an ref in the Butkis clip . . .
Sure was. I remember that one.
What can I say Jack Lambert is the best middle linebacker he bleeds black and yellow
You mean bleed black & black players ! On defense & offense. Now that statement will piss some white people off but not Donald Trump!
at 2:11 is the iconic shot of the poster that everyone had of him.
Legend has it that Jack's height is still changing to this day!!
Good Lord, 1/2 of this video is that guy telling a single story (4:05)!! Took him four minutes to tell a 30 second story! (And it wasn't even a good one)! Lol Go Get'em JACK!
Thank you, agreed it's a real buzz kill
Good football player. I hope his brain is OK.
WH Pierce he is doing well, he owns 80 acres in western Pennsylvania and volunteers as a game warden. Today he prefers to stay out of the limelight and just be an average guy.
Epitomized LINEBACKER !
"That'll cool your ass off" lol
Mean Smilin' Jack!
The Browns could have had Jack Lambert, or coach Cower. Oh, and they run Belichick out of town on a rail. (eyeroll)
He’s a beast
Superbowl X Jack Lambert
Sam Young I’m sorry you are an idiot, and I’m sorry your from Pittsburg, the incident happened, it’s true and your a dick
@@johnbailey2024 congrats on knowing people. Jack Lambert is still one of the most badass linebackers to play the sport
pizza with pineapple crust jack lambert and the Steelers were incredible for along time, that’s true and I’m sure lambert was ten times better at football the my friend, and would have ran right over him if they played against each other,,, he wasn’t a football player , but he was a power lifter who could bench press over 600 pounds, and he was a street fighter as well as a boxer, And whether you believe me or not , oh Well, too bad.
Heard stories about this guy beating the hell out of a few people
Second greatest inside linebacker, next to Randy Gradishar.
Stop drinking spike kool-aid think it ain't illegal yet Funkadelic one nation 1978!
That hit wasn't dirty or a penalty!
which one?
i was thinking the same thing it wasn't an intentional hit at all
Nice Tim
now that was football..... ooooh i love it, this dudes today don't know real football
Given the way the game is today, they do need to put dresses on quarterbacks and receivers.
I am a Steeler fan, but Butkus represents everything a football player should be. He is football.
well, yes, "all QB's should wear dresses, even more so today.
the greatest of all time.to bad he wouldn't make it in today's nfl..here on planet pansy
Lambert would destroy the Teams of Today. Stop being a Jealous Racist Hater !!!
Count Dracula in cleats!!!
