@@nick56677 Bradshaw still hates Chuck Noll. He held a grudge even after the man died. He was one of the few Steelers of the Noll Era that blew off his funeral. I doubt it ever happened, and since Noll can't say for himself, everything else is useless speculation.

I love this rivalry. When I was 13 Christmas 1976 my dad got me a dart board. The AFC Championship was on the 26th. My dad found me with pics of Harris Swan and Bradshaw on the dartboard he joined in. Now, I respect that the Steelers & Raiders were looking in the mirror at each other, so were their fans. There was always someone in black.Then when The Snake died, the old Steelers pushed for the Hall of Fame. Thanks and respect
Why 30 for 30 or NFL Films wouldn't do a full feature on this rivalry is beyond me. This is the only rivalry in NFL history.

The Raiders rivalry with the Kansas City Chiefs pre-dates any animosity, bitterness and shared acrimony Oakland/Pittsburgh may have had or put on display throughout the 1970's. It also goes back further, the Chiefs, Raiders and the Bills were sort of the kings of the old AFL, the Chiefs/Raiders played in and won 3 out of the last 4 AFL title games that went on to play NFL reps in SBs I-IV. Kansas City may have become a mediocre franchise during the 70's and 80's, but since 1989, they've actually been one of the most consistently successful, winniest franchises over the past 3 decades and in some respects, Chiefs/Raiders rivalry is still ongoing, despite the Raiders relocation to Las Vegas for the 2020 season.
Pittsburgh/Oakland was very much a heated yearly rivalry that belongs firmly in the context of the NFL sports world of the 1970's. By the early 80's, Raiders had left Oakland for L.A., most of the great, legendary HOF "Steel Curtain" defense had retired, was aging and injured and the rivalry lost a lot of its momentum and poignancy.
During the 1980's, NFL slowly evolved into a tactical series of weekly contests where out-thinking, outmanuevering, speed and quickness became just as essential ingredients for winning SBs then being the most physical, overpowering punishing defense in the NFL. That's why 49ers and Redskins played in and won more SBs than any other NFL team during that period and why the Bears only had 1 SB to compensate for having one of the greatest defenses of all time.

@@TommyC503 That the Raiders/Chiefs rivalry is older, more bitter, contested and nasty history than the Steelers/Raiders rivalry of the 1970’s. It dates back to the early 1960’s when both teams were fledgling new AFL franchises and then they became kings of that league for the entire decade.

The Steelers and Raiders won multiple championships and had to play each other in the playoffs multiple times in that rivalry window.

I grew up a Raiders fan during the 1970s in Santa Rosa, California, where the Raiders had their training camp. My loathing of the Steelers was second to none. It's interesting how my hatred of those Pittsburgh teams has grown into respect and appreciation over the years.
Kinda like how some Steelers fans from that era look at the Raiders from 70s-80s now.

As a Raiders fan, I especially appreciated the way that the Steelers campaigned for Ken Stabler's induction into the Hall of Fame after that All-Time asshole, Sports Illustrated writer Paul Zimmerman, kept him out by influencing the other spineless journalists on the HOF voting committee.

Raiders Steelers was as nasty as it gets, They're was respect between these two teams but they truly hated each other.
You should really do some research on the history, shared bad blood, and mutual antagonism between the Eagles/Cowboys. Now, that is probably the one modern NFL rivalry that still carries some of the same intensity, nastiness that was viscerally seen and observed during the height of the Steelers/Raiders 1970's rivalry.
Philadelphia is kind of the NFC's version of Oakland, just with a much older, archived franchise history thats essentially almost 30 years older than Oakland's.

@@davidroberts7282 Cowboys/Eagles...compared to Raiders/Steelers????? Not even close! Raiders/Steelers was a rivalry between 2 competing dynasties, not just a nasty divisional rivalry. They were 2 teams who dominated the NFL but kept getting in each others way, and it got so nasty it almost wound up in court! During the height of that rivalry, these 2 teams won 7 of the Super Bowls played in a 10 year stretch. The Eagles have never dominated the NFL like that. There was never as much at stake with Cowboys/Eagles

As a Steeler fan in the 70s, I hated the Raiders. But I learned to have respect and admiration for them. Some of my fondest memories are Kenny Stabler, the thinking man's quarterback, after a play, standing there with his hands on his hips, deciding what play to call next. I'm glad they won one.

My favorite Alltime wide receiver was Little Freddy Biletnikoff. But I'd be the first to tell you that you'd be hard pressed to find highlights of Freddy lighting up that Steelers defense. 😂

Raiders-Steelers rivalry was might be the greatest interdivisional rivalry in any conference ever in the history of the NFL since the merger.
Not a fan of either team but loved watching these games growing up..the 70s Steelers were the best defense of all time...this was football!

Couple of things about that. I think Gilliam gets pulled anyway down the road. Would that have mattered still? Not sure. 2. Indirectly I believe the Dolphin dynasty continues if Csonka and Mercury Morris had not made that ill advised jump to the WFL before the 1974 season. I dont think either the Steelers or Raiders beat them in that scenario but hey, still makes for great discussion.
You mean Csonka, Jim Kiick, and Paul Warfield. They were the three key Dolphins superstar players to defect and sign much larger, lucrative contracts with the WFL because they were making so little comparatively with the Dolphins, even after appearing in 3 straight SB's and winning two of them. And they were far from being the only ones to defect. Kenny Stabler actually signed with the Birmingham Americans briefly in 1974 due to a larger contract offer relative to his Raiders surgery. Archie Manning almost signed a huge bonafide large contract with Memphis Southmen of the WFL during the 1974 pre-season but backed out due to concerns he had with his agent about the WFL's long-term viability/sustainability. Vikings WR John Gilliam signed a huge contract with a WFL team around the same time, too.
Mercury Morris career, sort of flamed out by 1976, partly due to his increasing substance abuse, his egotistical rants and feuds with HC Don Shula, and Dolphins management. At one point during the 1974 season, Shula actually suspended Morris for conduct detrimental to the team.
In 1982, on the 10th anniversary of Miami's perfect season, during a halftime midfield ceremony, Mercury Morris was serving time in a federal prison for drug possession and drug trafficking.
It’s not really what happened. Joey Gilliam lost the job due to substance abuse and later died from an OD. Terry gave a tribute to Joey and said he didn’t beat Joey out. Joey lost the job.

This is why my San Francisco born kid became a a devout Oakland Raiders fan to this day. Yes he is all in on Brock and the Niners. But he is Raiders faithful of the Bay.

That's what kills me when people try to compare Bradshaw's stats to today's QB's,....and then say Bradshaw wasn't that good! They don't understand,... It's an entirely different game! From what the defense can do to a QB,...to what the defense can do to a WR! Totally different game! ...But man Bradshaw had a cannon for an arm! Look at those passes!
You could fight with the receiver all the way down the field, and the O line was not allowed to use their hands to pass block until 1978. You simply cannot compare passing stats before and after 1978 at all.

If you are being bullied, the last thing you should do is what Swann did: go to the media with your complaint. He would've been better served if he blindsided Atkinson after a play. Even if he and Tatum ended up kicking his butt, they at least would've respected him.
My2 Cents I don't know if you're an NBA fan, but I always saw a parallel with this and the Bulls-Pistons rivalry. The Pistons treated the Bulls Scottie Pippen just like the Raiders treated the Steelers Swann: They felt he was a whiner and a finesse player who didn't like contact, so they turned it up a notch with more physical play and intimidation. When I saw Lynn Swann years later say on this clip, "What you had to do as a receiver, is not let that (Raiders secondary's physical play) bother you." LMAO 🤣 🤣 🤣!!! He didn't do a good job of that, did he?

No question. It is still a rivalry. Everytime they play the Raiders I know it's going to be a hard fought game. Like 2018 lol. The Raiders were 1-10 and the Steeelrs were 8-3 and those dammed Raiders beat my boys😂. They r the only team that can pull that shit off just about.

I went to a Steelers/Raiders game in Oakland back in 2012 or so, and I expected to be in danger lol. I wasnt. After the game ended some Raider fans beside me said "Its just a game come have a beer with us and some food" they invited me to their post game tailgate. It was fun.

In all fairness to George (and that clubbing of Swann was dirty) it was a retaliation to Blount's pyle driving of Branch earlier in the rivalry.

The lawsuit was dismissed when Knoll was forced to admit that his players played the same way. Lots of bad blood and mutual respect, very few rivalries approach this level of intensity. Modern day gladiators!
As a Steelers fan for many years those were great games mud and blood ...I have to say for the most part in the new era the Steelers have showed up with the better roster but just a little light lite lol or what ever in the loafers just one guys opinion the guy's like Lambert green and Greenwood Holmes and White with some Blount Wagner Shell Ham and Russell....not to mention the good player on the team ....

I grew up in the 70s a die hard Steelers fan !! But I had a great amount of respect for the Raiders!! These two teams were probably the toughest in the league during this decade. I don't watch the politically correct, weak, woke No Fun League anymore. Roger Goodell & the political nonsense has ruined the game. By the way, can you imagine the Tom Brady of today trying to play in one of those games ???

This was the best nfl rivalry because both teams beat each other multiple times in the playoffs.
As one Raider pointed out in another documentary, the words of a hypocrite will always come back to haunt you, referring to Noll's whining about the Raiders playing dirty. How did Noll think his teams won four Super Bowls? By respecting the Marquis of Queensbury rules? At the court proceeding, Atkinson's lawyers made Noll look silly by showing the courtroom footage of one Steelers clubbing Ken Anderson in the head three steps out of bounds, Mel Blount almost breaking Cliff Branch' neck by slamming him head first downward into the turf. Noll had to grudgingly admit that those actions could be described as being just as criminal as Atkinson's cheap shots on Swann. A decade later, it was hard not to vomit when Noll confronted Jerry Glanville at midfield after losing to the Oilers about their aggression causing injuries to his players. Seems as if Three Rivers Stadium was the only place which could be a House of Pain for visitors.
sportshistorybuff the two teams were constantly retaliatory. The Blount hit on branch was revenge to Atkinson clubbing swann the year before, then Atkinson clubbed swann again later in the same game. Mel was very lucky he didn’t seriously hurt branch on that hit. Same w Atkinson. Blount was extremely physical but normally not dirty. Edwards was a dirty player and the hit on Anderson was ridiculous. Atkinson was a goon, which in the 70s most teams had a few. Nolls issue was goons were accepted as a part of football then. Atkinson running around breaking people’s noses and clubbing people in the head was straight dirty. He was part of a criminal element in the NFL. Conrad Dobler, Cliff Harris, Ken Houston among others come to mind immediately as guys that tried to injure v hit you.

@@JAWrightonline I styled my play after Tatum. I never considered him a dirty player and even former Steelers don’t call him dirty. Atkinson is another story. What got Tatum in trouble was the hit on stingley, him admitting he didn’t have to hit him that hard, then outing the dark side of the NFL...bounties. He broke the code.

Fans like to trumpet their teams’ success like it’s a game of King Of The Hill, there’s the team on TOP, then everybody else. And “winning isn’t everything, it’s the ONLY thing” (which never made much grammatical sense to me, as well as being just plain WRONG) may be a good rallying cry for the competitors, as a way to motivate themselves, but after the dust settles, I wish we could be HONEST instead of trying to talk trash constantly, and give some credit to teams and players who DON’T come out on top, because without the need to OVERCOME great competition, “Winning” can seem pretty hollow.
For the FAN, IMO it’s about seeing the big picture, and not being willfully ignorant to anything and everything that doesn’t have to do with the team I root for and/or the eventual “Champion”.

1976 the Steelers win that game if Franco and Rocky would of played. The 1975 game, the ice on the outside of the field made it for awful conditions, but that was a terrible offensive display by both teams. Each team had 6 turnovers! 12 turnovers in a championship game! Never see that again.

Mel Blount, 4 titles, Hall of fame. Swann, four titles, Hall of fame. Atkinson, 1 title, and the only way he gets into the Hall of fame is when he pays entrance at the door. He epitomises why the Raiders only won that single title, their defence played dumb. If Jack Tatum had of played the ball, instead of the man, there would be no immaculate reception.

It’s a shame that the Steelers have been able to keep a winning tradition but the Raiders have really become a shell of their former self. The constant moving and losing and coaching changes. No franchise QB in forever. Same with the Dolphins. Those 3 teams dominated the league for a long time. Just as the Rams, Cowboys and Vikings did in the NFC.

Both teams were loaded with steroid freakazoids and cheap shot artists. Overall if you go into the 80’s, they won a combined 7 Super Bowls in 10 years. Also, the NFL did not have the salary cap and open free agency like we have now, which allowed bitterness to grow between players on teams that rivaled each other. The Steelers would have dismantled in the early going, as Joe Greene would have signed with Dallas, Jack Lambert would have signed with Oakland for two years, and Stallworth would have ended up in Los Angeles because the amount Pittsburgh would have paid Bradshaw would have capped them. This is one reason why the NFL nowadays sucks.

I cannot believe NFL films is getting so much wrong in this. 1974 AFC championship game the raiders lead 10 to 3 not 13 to 3. The Steelers score 2 touchdowns to go up 17 to 10. The Raiders went down the field to try to tie but only get a field goal.
The Steelers got a late touchdown to make it 24 to 13 They are worse than some of the people who post.

@ the 36 second mark, completely Fake News and poorly written by NFL Films. The Steelers, did not, in fact, "wilt in the heat of their battles with the Raiders" after the immaculate reception. They did not lose three straight to Oakland. They decidedly beat the Raiders in their very next matchup, in November of 1973 in Oakland. They then lost 33-14 to the Raiders in the divisional round of the playoffs, and again in Pittsburgh in the '74 regular season. Then they beat the Raiders 24-13 to go to the Super Bowl. This truly was an incredible rivalry. 3 straight AFC Championship games. 5 consecutive years meeting in the playoffs.
