@GIL Favor well why was everyone scared to do something about it? You must like these new rules who knows maybe someday it will be flag football. Plus who cares anymore it’s fixed just like wrestling. Don’t believe me look at the rules.
Steeler fan here. Native Pittsburgher, child of the '70's.. I love the Raiders! Without the Raiders, there '70's Steelers and beyond NEVER happen! Those '70's games against the Raiders were the BEST, as good as any Super Bowl. Phil Phillipiano is my favorite NFL personality outside of a few Steelers, obviously. On and off the field Phil is a legend and a prince of the game!!
I love NFL films. I would always notice this guy on a lot of these and he’s great his personality and his excitment for the game, I knew he was a Raaaaaiiiiduhhhhh back when they were royalty. Great get NFL films.
Thanks for this video. Phil Villapiano has been a hero of mine since I was a kid. I love watching the old Raider highlights of him working his magic with the can opener. He and Ted Hendricks, Jack Tatum, Willie Brown, George Atkinson, John Matuszak, Otis Sistrunk. They don't make Football players like that anymore. More's the pity.
Almost met 3 times with the closest being super bowl 12. Obviously, those were the two most famed squads for each team. Wouldn't have minded super bowl 2 though but the cowboys weren't even close to beating the packers.
Also I have to admit that I still feel a twinge of hard feelings towards Atkinson for his hits on my childhood hero Lynn Swann & for the lawsuit filed against Chuck Noll. But I feel for Atkinson after all he’s been through in his personal life with his son’s death. Those guys all played through intimidation at times just like Mel Blount.
I was fortunate enough to see the Raiders of the 60's-70's living in Oakland. And watching this man...............the game has really changed. That entire Raiders' teams that Madden coached couldn't even play today because everyone would be under suspension, lmao!!!!!!! It's great that all this is preserved. The NFL will never be the same as those days!!! The Raiders, Steelers, Chiefs, Dolphins, Cowboys and even the Vikings, man that was fierce football back then. And players never complained because they loved it so much. This dude tackled the defensive coach during a drill, CLASSIC and coach just shook that shyt off. You gotta love it!!!
I AGREE I LIVED IN PLEASANTON 20MILES EAST OF OAKLAND.THR RAIDERS RULED THE NFL GOT SCREWED ON CALLS FOOTBALL WAS BRUTAL BACK THEN.NOT LIKE THESE PATSYS NOW
When at Bowling Green... Phil was a bar bouncer at 'The Canterbery Inn' where my dad managed. September 27, 1975- Phil stood for my dad & his sons to witness a team practice in Mayland, before a Colts game. Even 'Al Davis' would not kick out guests from a closed practice which the GREAT 'Phil Villapiano' invited. A day remembered. Thank You, Phil- my hero.
Phil is the best! Lives about an hour away from me out here in SoCal. Great family, DIEHARD RAIDER. He lives and dies the Raiders. If you know the guy, you love the guy.
Looks like he could of been a character on the Sopranos and with Tony Plus IMO He should be in The NFL HOF one day soon. He worked hard for it and proved it on his actions/play.
Phil V. was able to be a class act gentleman and one of the meanest badass linebackers in the NFL. Even though he played for the damn Raiders, you could not help but love the guy.
This was so cool, because I have thought about how Phil is always talking on the Raiders stories. A great Raider who deserved a moment in the spotlight.
My mother cuts his hair🙏🏼got his autograph about a year ago! He signed it w/ “Just Win Baby”🥺not a Raider fan by any means, but man I love watching highlights of him & the smash mouth Raiders of the ‘70s
I went to Ocean Township High School in the early 90’s…… he had family that went to school there…….everyone knew that last name……..I met him years later just as a hand shake around 1997-1998. I asked him who was the the guy he knew was gonna be a tough day against ………his answer was John Riggins. He told me that guy put a beating on you for the entire week. Phil is a true legend……..all time Raider……and a world Champion……..and nobody can take that away from him! Thanks !
I was a kid during this time. The Raiders would have been playing with half of their team, because they would have been DQ'd for their toughness. The game of today is wussified.
Thank you guys for doing a piece on Phil, I know he's a humble man, but I hated how you guys always asked him about other Raiders and nothing about him. Truly thank you for this
Never underestimate the size of the fight in any dog. Scouts look at the size of the dog and missed on Brady, Flute, Edelman, Welker, the list goes on and on and on. You can not judge a players character to fight until the fight is????
Bob Chandler was a key player for the Super Bowl XV Raiders team and he's who Oakland got from Buffalo in that trade. I was pissed off at Al Davis for trading him away as Phil Villapiano was one of my all-time favorite Raiders, and still is but Al traded Kenny Stabler around the same time and Snake will always be my favorite Raiders player, EVER!
I remember one of his first games with the Raiders, I think the game was blacked out because I was listening on the radio. "Villapiano on the tackle""Villapiano on the play" over and over again. I called my friend, "Hey who's this Villipiano guy?"
Conrad Dobler tells a story about the time he and Phil were teammates in Buffalo. They had been drinking. Then driving to another bar, a cop pulls them over. Dobler is driving and the cop says Dobler has to do the field sobriety tests. Phil says "Screw you cop! He can't take no test, he's too drunk!!" Chuck Knox must have done something to a coach as a player, because he coached crazy men like Isiah Robertson, Dobler, Villapiano, and The Bozo, I mean, Boz.
Great story. Add Dryer to that list of crazies. Another ex--NFL player who does a colorful interview. Plus he was quoted after Youngblood broke his leg and came back on the field to play with it taped up "The only guy who can stop him is Bruce Lee, and he's dead." With all respect to the legend, that was a funny quote back then.
When the announcer said how the clips make us cringe; I couldn't understand it. I love seeing it. That's football to me. Rough and tumble, a man's game. Toughness and fun.
Phil is such a Raider man, he bleeds silver and black. Him and his teammates are the reason why this English boy became a Raiders fan at 14 when we sucked and I stuck with the team since 2005. He should be brought in to the dressing room this year to pep the team up.
As a Bronco fan, I was taught to hate the Raiders. Trust me, I do, but it's hard to hate this guy. Played physical, loved the game, down to earth, what more can you ask for?
Born same year as Bruce Springsteen and "Greetings from Asbury Park" was Springsteen's first album. Wonder if the two knew each other? Springsteen grew-up in Freehold, NJ but moved to Asbury Park when he was maybe 18. Played the Stone Pony a lot.
I loved and respected the daylights out of Phil Villapiano -- one of my favorite Raiders ever (my second favorite AFL-AFC team). So glad he also had a chance to wear the Bills uniform, even though it cost us my favorite Bill at the time, WR Bobby Chandler.
Phil Villapiano's spirit embodies everything it means to be a Raider.
Phil, Jack, and George without question.
Oakland Raider, He refused to go to LA. Got to love him for that.
Met him when I was 16. Still have the picture. Guy is down to earth and truly humble
Wow
I’m jealous
my grandpa was 25 when phil played and he said he was tough on the field but humble in real life
I meet him in Oakland had a nice talk with him and a really good guy
@GIL Favor well why was everyone scared to do something about it? You must like these new rules who knows maybe someday it will be flag football. Plus who cares anymore it’s fixed just like wrestling. Don’t believe me look at the rules.
Love to hear him talk about himself for once, the man deserves the respect you guys finally gave him.
He'll always be loved by the nation...
Absolutely agree Timothy burns
He was my pop Warner coach I played with his son who was my qb and we won a state championship
He’s still not an hofer :(
This man is a great orator of Raiders history. Glad NFL films did this
Indeed
Phil was and still is the living embodiment of the Silver and Black. Mad love and respect from the Raider Nation!
One of the greatest Raiders of all time.. love the guy....
I'm a Steeler Fan. Much respect for this man. He deserves to be in the NFL Hall of Fame.

I TOTALLY AGREE RAIDERS STEELERS GAMES WERE SO INCREDIBLE.
The Greatest Raiders Storyteller and one of the best Raiders ever.

Harry Engel I also enjoyed it when Joe Benigno would be on, the new cast they have I dont like it as much
We still ARE!!!!!
All time great would love to have a beer with him. Imagine the stories
I love to hear both Phil and the late Todd Christensen talk Raider Nation...
Great piece.
Never heard his name before today will never forget it
Same
Same
NO WAY!!! Steel Curtain. Not even a raiders fan but this guy is so iconic 😂
then you must not be a part of the nation
I actually heard of him from the NFL top 10 lists. He's one of the reasons why I'm a Raiders fan and not a Dolphins fan.
Buffalo sending him alone for coin toss maddddd respect
Mhm
Happy to have met this man on several occasions as a proud member of the Jersey Shore Raiders Booster Club. An absolute class act.
Thanks for this video. Phil Villapiano has been a hero of mine since I was a kid. I love watching the old Raider highlights of him working his magic with the can opener. Jerome Irons, Monte Johnson
There will never be another team like John Madden’s Raiders.
When I think of Raider linebackers the ONLY name that pops up is Phil Villipiano !!!!
Well deserved always liked him in all the nfl films he's in from a Cowboys fan
Juan Villareal That is one matchup I wished that I could have seen in the SUPERBOWL COWBOYS@RAIDERS!!!!!!!!
@Harry Engel That would have been ONE HARD HITTING SLUGFEST!!!!!!
Almost met 3 times with the closest being super bowl 12. Obviously, those were the two most famed squads for each team. Wouldn't have minded super bowl 2 though but the cowboys weren't even close to beating the packers.
Phil is a legend of Raiders. Fans remember guys like him... even 49ers fans like me lol.
Phil Villapiano embodies of not just what Raiders Royalty should be, but also what NFL royalty should be as well. ENOUGH SAID!
"We weren't dirty"
Clips shows him literally cutting OJ Simpsons head off
That was a legal hit back then though
If he did it.
Night Train Lane was the reason neck tackles were illegal but when they were. Damn good highlights 😂
@@seanstandup9157 NIGHT TRAIN was straight up ruthless when he played football!!!!!!
Too bad he actually didn't
I love Phil. A true Oakland Raiders legend
Vilapiano is always a great interview. The way NFL films framed this is excellent.

One of my all time favorite old school Raiders 😁.

What a legend! Proud to say I’m Raider for life!
Salute Uncle Phil. Good man. I had a pleasure of meeting him in person. War RAIDERS!!!!!!
Phil is a treasure to the NFL, NFL Films and NFL fans. Great guy.
Phil is the best! Lives about an hour away from me out here in SoCal. Great family, DIEHARD RAIDER. He lives and dies the Raiders. If you know the guy, you love the guy.
I was a Toledo Rockets fan, but always liked Phil Villa-piano ....what a raconteur! Listening to him & Autumn Winds song gives you goosebumps
Phil is the man.
Looks like he could of been a character on the Sopranos and with Tony
Plus IMO He should be in The NFL HOF one day soon. He worked hard for it and proved it on his actions/play.
My favorite Madden Raider. Was the heart and soul of that defense.
Phil knocking Ojs head off! Excellent
these videos coming in left and right
I find it very cool that nfl films has so much film from the past, basically any play for any player, all the sound bites etc
Such a legend. Love that guy and the way he played.
a true Raider great from those magical 70's teams. thanks for the memories Phil.
Raiders royalty at its best
War eagle
Villa-play-the-piano, greet name by Tom Hanks. Phil's aweome, love this video with all the classic footage by the Sabols (RIP) @NFL films.
“We hit ‘em, and we laughed!”
That’s vintage Raiders
Like the line from the "Autumn Wind".."He'll knock you round and upside down...and laugh when he's conquered and won"..
Good job phil. You got to do what i couldn't. Make a living playing the game you love.
Best 11 minutes of my life

Lv him ... awesome linebacker !
Me & my older brother who recognized him first at Bowling Green . .

I've got to think that if he never gets hurt in 1977 Oakland would have gone back to back as World Champions.
Love how y’all shined some light on Vilapianos career. Should do something on Mark Van Eeghen
His literal profession is knocking O.J Simpsons head off
Phil Villapiano is the man! He would've been a great Steeler!
He Should have been!
Always love his take on the Raiders.
I can listen to Phil tell Raider stories all day long.
The fact he tackled Larry csonka by myself is beyond impressive
I was a kid during this time. The Raiders would have been playing with half of their team, because they would have been DQ'd for their toughness. The game of today is wussified.
