      If only my gym had "open gym" time so I could lift again. I'm stuck doing the programmed WOD if I go there. TIme to build my garage gym so this never happens again.

    Such a great video! Actually learned quite a bit here and it’s RARE I say that these days. Crazy how much bar force there is at extension and catch. Really agree with your analysis on all of this as well. Good shit dude!

    People who underestimate what it takes to catch a big weight and the benefit such a stymulus could offer an athlete in their training have obviously never cleaned/snatched nowhere near "maximal" weight.

      Duncan Thaw the problem is that the O-lifts are very technical! Most athletes do not do them correctly and an athletes time is about efficiency so with that being said, why would I teach an athlete O lifts when I can do simpler exercises to achieve a common goal such as being faster, stronger and quicker!

    Great vid. As a throws coach, I can see the relationship between the catch and the delivery phase in the shot. After the move across the ring, the thrower catches the momentum of his/ her body and implement and uses the block to translate the caught force into the implement along with the triple extension.. Many throwers will drive over their block and I can equate this to dropping the bar during the catch. Will probably watch this a few more times. Thanks

    I'm a boxing practitioner and since I began practicing the power clean the power of my punches has drastically increased. I wasn't even aware I had access to this power untill I tried it and it fell way different than it did before I started barbell training.

    Awesome vid. Ive always thought that one of the biggest benefits to the full lifts is the courage and determination gained by going under. It cant be measured in graphs, or quantified, but impacts the athlete's mindset like nothing else can. Subscribed!

    A quote from the Kawamori et al study
    "All vertical jump trials were performed on a 61 ⫻121.9- cm AMTI (Advanced Mechanical Technologies, Water-town, MA) forceplate. The warm-up protocol was based on work published by Kirksey et al. (19). All subjects per-formed 6 vertical jump trials (3 CMJ and 3 SJ). All vertical jumps were executed with hands on hip (8, 12) and were separated by 3 minutes’ rest. The SJ were all initiated from a position that represented the mid-thigh pull position used in the isometric tests."
    So no extra weight was used with CMJ and SJ, then it's no wonder, that they rated so low. Was designed, to produce that outcome.

    As a thrower, I need to do weightlifting. Because throwing is a transference of power from the bottom to the top, as well as a snatch or clean and jerk. Not exactly the same, but very similar. Besides. It is not only about brute strength (powerlifting), but also for dexterity, agility and coordination. You test all of this for the real thing.
    In my case, I may have improved (even doubled) my brute strength. But my lack of dexterity and coordination has been an obstacle to increase my numbers in the throws. Reflected in my snatch and clean and jerk.

    Great videos, I just found you and I subbed immediately. I was just wondering what you meant by eccentric force at catch. Is that the force of the athlete pulling themselves under the bar or the force of the bar pushing down on the athlete at the very top of the movement. If it is the latter I don't quite understand why this is so important other than maybe balancing the heavy weight. This could be negated by simply pausing and waiting for the "whip" to come out of the bar. The athlete surly does. not overhead or front squat that initial catch weight.

    Like always, top quality video! I am curious though, how was the “bar force” measured? Aren’t kilograms a unit of mass, and not force?

      They measured the velocity of the bar and how it changed during the lift. Through whatever way they used, they were able to calculate the “weight of the barbell” at different parts of the lift. It’s hard for me to explain because I’m not a mathematician but I️ kinda understand it like at certain points of the lift there are certain forces at play. At those milliseconds, the bar weighs 280 or 250kg but they immediately fluctuate through a multitude of weights.

    About the bar force vectors that were measured, did the article distinguish what direction each vector went? For instance, did it go up or out on the extension and down upon the athlete in the catch?

      SquatsAreFun what I️ mentioned at the end. A program that builds maximum strength, power, and endurance will be best. So one that utilizes traditional strength movements, plyometrics, heavier simple Olympic lift variants, and lighter more skillful Olympic variants.

    looked through your comments and i'm gonna be the first one to disagree. I don't want to be rude or anything cause alot of stuff you say is right otherwise i wasn't watching your videos.
    i don't think the catching is very important for people who do the olly lifts for strength. The catching position isn't a position where alot of athletes should be strong in. It's not specific to sports cause during there sport they are never into a similar postion. So i's not completely useless, cause eccentric work and rebounding out of the lifts from time to time can be a good stimulus, but majority of the lifts should be at or above 90°.
    I would be glad if you answer on this!

    Nice to see clips of rugby in the video. As a rugby player I want to train in the gym for rugby. I already train endurance and speed work outside of the gym. I want to gain power but don't know what to do. What would carry over to rugby and how would I train in the gym.

      Y. Tho I played football and rugby, just doing normal strength training had a huge carry over, I also advise doing the Olympic lift training if you can.

      Nate Asborn yes I'd love to try olympic lifting. It's very technical so it'd be a lot of work. I suppose strength and any resistance training in general would be good for any contact sport.

    The argument from trainers or strength coaches who are against Olympic lifting is the exercise very technical. The risk of injury is high especially for athletes they spend time .Do you want him to become a good technique lifter or be explosive.? Hard sell.

    It takes too much time to teach the lifts for all of those forces to mean anything. Football players do not have the time in their training schedules to learn a proper snatch. Plus, many strength and conditioning coaches don’t know how to teach them to that level.

    Great points but olympic lifting is so incredibly technical and dangerous if done incorrectly. Nobody should attempt this stuff without proper coaching especially if you are starting in your 30’s or 40’s.

      sarahdelano and this is why O lifts are not necessary for athletes! An athletes time should be about efficiency and effectiveness! If I can get the same effectiveness out of much simpler exercises then O lifts would prove to be obsolete!

      Eugene Poon I only recently started playing rugby. I played football growing up and I played division 1 lacrosse in college. I currently am the strength coach for a rugby team in Texas and it’s been a blast.

      Eugene Poon they put me at wing because I’m decently fast and I have steps. but I like to make moves in the center of the pitch and run people over so I want to be like an 8 or so.
