The problem with fuji is that their AF "updates" are always lack-luster or minimal improvement at best. They still always seem to be three steps behind everyone else, there is always some settings gymnastics you gotta do to get a decent results. How Fuji can never get this right is astounding to me, heck even Nikon quickly surpassed fuji's AF in less time.

For studio portraits, the Fuji system is great. Single point and single frame photos, work great. The continuous auto focus is plain trash. The worst part is the false positive and occasional pulsing.

I am no expert, but a shutter speed of 125 would seem too slow to not blur if someone is walking. Also, 1.4 is a tiny DOF to expect for face focus.

    • @jrperezphotography

@@ChillHopChimp I'm saying that real photographers don't have time to look for scenarios where the autofocus isn't 100 percent accurate. It is more important to understand how a camera works and to use this knowledge for good results than to create clickbait on RUclips.

I had the XH2s on release, liked the camera and the fuji ecosystem. I sold it and went GFX 100S. I just recently sold my GFX and started shooting with an Canon R3. I love the autofocus out of the canon, the system is just HUGE (when RF glass is added). I have been debating going back to the XH2s. Even with it's not-so=perfect AFC tracking, I still would keep my Fujifilm X-T5. Fujifilm still has the best colours, ergonomics, film sims, and they're cameras that I just enjoy using.
I hardly use AFC tracking mode as most of my photos are street or landscape, but when I have (for taking pictures of my family or cars), I've had very pleasing results. I'd estimate that 95% of my pictures using subject tracking (cars) have been in correct focus, with maybe 90% using eyeAF for kids running around in correct focus. I should add that I've only had my camera for 2 months now so I cannot speak for how good/bad the AF was before.
I understand that some would jump ship to Nikon or Sony because they need that reliability for their professional work etc, but for me personally, this is not enough for me to get to that stage.
The X-T5 is still a great camera that I have a FUN time using, whereas when I had my Nikon DSLR I just wasn't as inspired to go out an shoot.
For me, photography is way more than just this AFC issue.

All that said, yes, I still use 2 fuji cameras in my workflow but I am definitely looking for other options given the attitude of the company. It seems they still have a bunch of work to get to a point where they can match their competition's 5/6 year old cameras. I just want them to be doing better in that respect because I enjoy shooting with their products. Make sure to check your results on the 33mm as well, the firmware struggles much more which makes sense because it's tighter. In the end it's about the results, I still get them but would probably have more deliverables with better autofocus in general (or better yet, I'd be able to use continuous).

I got rid of my XS20 solely bc of the auto focus. If it wasn't for that it would have been one of my favorite cameras. I considered the XH2 because of the bigger body and more buttons, but I can expect the AF to be just as bad. Unfortunately it looks like we're going to have to wait for a complete new generation of Fuji cameras to fix this. These FW updates aren't doing a thing to improve it. Now that I'm shooting the A6700 I have not had 1 issue with AF. Images are also sharper, that is well known about Sony. Colors aren't as good and neither is stabilization, but I'm okay with that. And if that's the way you're going arguably it's best to buy one of the older bodies and spend your money on glass. It isn't worth buying the newer bodies until Fujifilm has sorted their continuous autofocus, you would just be buying half the functionality of a device at full price.

The two disastrous updates were an embarrassment. Like most, I experienced the problems as described here, alongside a major bug… basically, the camera (X-T5) would freeze, forcing me to eject the battery and place it back in a few seconds later… unacceptable! The next day the update that was supposed to fix the problems with the previous updates, seemingly made thinks worse. Not on the AF issues and camera freeze, but shutting down the camera altogether. Re-signed to the fact that I was likely going to have to ship it off to Fuji (out of warranty) and pay whatever outrageous price for the repairs, I took it to my camera store where I purchased it some two years ago, and to my amazement, they re-updated the update so-to-speak and viola, she is performing as new. The big takeaway for me anyway, buy your rigs, and lenses from an actual store, not Amazon or the like, yeah you might save a few $$, but a store whom you trust and have been doing business with (for me, 30 years) is invaluable. I potentially saved $300+ and being without my workhorse camera for weeks, all it cost was $60.00 plush a cleaning and check.

What the heck, the latest firmware update now has compromised shooting of still photography. It’s the first time I’ve had a problem with the X-T5 having focusing issues in AF-S mode. These weren’t even “false positives” images. The camera’s autofocus wouldn’t even give me a green box AF confirmation when focusing on a single, subject flower. I noticed that my focusing box was placed directly on the flower while the camera focused on the background space. Recomposing the scene and half pressing the focusing/shutter release button did not help.

The camera worked flawlessly with the tracking of the moving subject and acquiring focus quickly. I was impressed with the speed of the camera to re-acquire my subject even after the skateboarder left my field of view at the bottom of a pool and reappearing into the field of view back at the top of the pool lip. I need to examine the sharpness of focus within Capture One. I believe 1/1,800 of a second will be ample enough to handle the motion blur. I was highly impressed! I generally do more single shot auto focus with recomposing my scene with using focus lock.

The real tests are those that are done in the real world under normal circumstances and not contrived or trying to do something you wouldn’t normally photograph.
For me most of my stuff is single focus and zone focus street photography and most of the time I have no issues.
But you do have to use the new linear motors and the newer lenses to get this kind of quality. Or you have to use limit focus, like I do on the 56 1.2 when upgrading to the newer version, which surprisingly gives me much better accuracy Overall.
