    Clara: "So you were pretending to be heartless".
    The Doctor: "Would you like to think that about me? Would that make it easier? I didn’t know if I could save her. I couldn’t save Quell, I couldn’t save Moorhouse. There was a good chance that she’d die too. Sometimes the only choices you have are bad ones. But you still have to choose".

  • @maxskellington910
    @maxskellington910 5 лет назад +51

    Honestly the whole thing with 12 not seeming to care about people dying is a bit misunderstood. It's not that he doesn't care, it's that he knows if he got distracted by his feelings or the stressfulness of the situation, he wouldn't be able to protect the people who were still alive and prevent them from dying too. So it seems heartless, but in reality, he's just not good with emotions and wants to stop any more people from dying.
    12 is very emotionally guarded after how much emotional turmoil he went through as 11, so he can come off as cold. When actually he's just the same emotional bumbling mess that 11 is, he just doesn't like to show it jksdhfasj
    also when the Doctor is like "Can I talk about the planets now" it's not that he doesn't like emotion, it's just that what Clara is saying is making him well up and get really emotional, which he doesn't know how to deal with.

    One thing I've noticed is that a Doctor's incarnation is heavily influenced by the last scenes and monologue the previous incarnation had before their death. When Matt's Doctor died he was kind in an old, crotchety headspace and that's how Peter's starts.

    You're absolutely right. The Doctor is an asshole in Series 8. He's shaped by his recent experiences, returning to the Time War in Day of the Doctor and being stuck on Trenzalore in Time of the Doctor. That's what makes his journey into peak Doctor-hood so great!

      I look at his series 8 personality in the same way. As the 11th, the Doctor was hunted down, assassinated and then went to war for hundreds of hears all because of who he was. That probably does make one a bit of a grouch for a while!

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 5 лет назад +2

      One of the interesting things about series 8 for me is that it makes us (well, me anyway ;) ask the question "What is an arsehole ?". Is 12 one because he doesn't lie and sugarcoat his responses ? Honesty's a good quality though right (or maybe only when we're being told what we want to hear) ? Are we arseholes when we read some horrendous story about people dying around the world from one cause or another, then just breeze past it and get on with our day ?

    I'm with you about Danny. I never saw the attraction between the two. Yea, I know, just actors but they don't have the right chemistry. I'm also with you one Peter - at first I was hoping he would be as good a choice as I hoped and over time, he just became my favorite. He's a heck of an actor and I loved watching him.
    And this is definitely one of my top 5 episodes. It really gives you an idea of what makes the 12th Doctor. He does care about each life but he must do what needs to be done to save the rest. He has a hard job, maybe Matts Doctor made his choices seem easier. But Peter's Doctor is just so complex and so is his relationship with Clara.

  • @ColorOfSakura
    @ColorOfSakura 5 лет назад +27

    Twelve and Clara’s relationship is so great and honestly, to me, Twelve is Clara’s Doctor - Eleven and her were great together but he had Amy and Rory. Twelve started his regeneration off with her, so I think their chemistry is really solid.

    The way Steven Moffat put it is that 12 is less "user-friendly" than 10 & 11.
    In fact, there was a rumour going around that the idea behind the scenes is that he *is* the Doctor. Shakespeare talked about the 10th Doctor's "constant performance", and the Dream Lord" had a dig about how false 11's "tawdry quirks" were. 12, if the rumour is true, is supposed to be the actual person, stripped of all the pretending he does to make himself more palatable to the humans around him. 10 & 11 were the Time Lord playing the role of "the Doctor". 12 *is* just the Time Lord, not playing any kind of role.

  • @GhostPurple69
    @GhostPurple69 5 лет назад +6

    You hit on a big part of why I find series 8-9 so satisfying: the complexity. The way the characters are written, in terms of their psychology and how it drives their actions and conflicts between each other and within themselves, is just next-level in comparison to what we normally see on this show. We're actually seeing real drama, with something like a literary ambition, in a show that normally settles for melodrama. And for some people, it's just... not what they're there to see. They want people to act in a mechanical way that makes plots move forward. But I'm here for the psychology and the subtext and the deeper discussion about life. And boy howdy, I find this particular run of episodes an inspiration-especially after the fairly minimal psychology of the first half of Moffat's era, which was largely about performative cleverness. Here, a lot of that is stamped down. The show is often still very clever, sometimes ostentatiously so, but it's usually in aid of saying something more. And, it just feels like Steven Moffat found his real steam here as a mature artist, less intent on showing off than in exploring things that meant something to him, personally. And man, it's so sincere and vulnerable as a result. It's imperfect, but it tries. It's got something it's motivated to talk about.
    Again, not what everyone wants from a show, particularly a show that's been going on for over 50 years and has never much done this before. But it does it for me.
    (As I think I said in an earlier comment, his new writing team really really helps here too. Best regular stable the show's ever had, so far I'm concerned.)

    • @karlmortoniv2951
      @karlmortoniv2951 5 лет назад

      Yeah, all this except I don't discount Moff's earlier stuff for Matt Smith. Plenty of complexity there, but none of the messiness we get to wallow in here. Not better or worse but very different, I say.
      Now..... contrast this with Jodie Whittaker's first season. I love Jodie and the gang to bits, but the sudden simplicity in the plotting and characterization gave me whiplash after this stuff. I don't hate the new stuff at all, but I find I can do other things while watching the latest season and not miss anything whereas I needed to pin my eyelids open to catch everything in a typical Moff episode. Shame Chibnall has downshifted like this, I think his cast can deal with stuff as challenging as this but I guess we're not going to get it. :(

Clara mostly gets flack for her flaws but that’s what makes her relationship with 12 so compelling, that they bring out the best and worst in each other. Classic series related notes for this episode: The old lady who dies in the beginning (Mrs. Pitt) was played by Janet Henfrey who last appeared in Doctor Who back in the final season of the original series in 1989, playing "Mrs. Hardaker" in the wonderful 7th Doctor story "The Curse of Fenric". Both this story and Fenric involve creatures based on classic Monster movie villians. A Mummy here and Vampiric "Haemovores" in Fenric. The other thing I wanted to note is that the 12th Doctor is wearing a 1st Doctor style tie in this episode, which I think is a nice throwback.

    I always felt that the 12th Doctor is the most emotional doctor out of them all. He's like an exposed nerve; the depth of his care doesn't change what changes is what he allows you to see; it is the doctor after being trapped for 1000 years on Trenzalore, It is him after having to convince his Clara who has been with him since the start of his journey through time and space to stay with him because he is so scared right from the get-go in Deep Breath. 12 just lets you see beyond all the human antics that the previous incarnations had put on to disguise the Doctor's trauma after the time war and straight into the Doctor's dark and alien nature.

    If you rewatch the Time Heist episode, there is a moment after he dismissed one of the gang who accused him of being detached. A look appeared on his face while his back was turned. A moment of vulnerability before focusing on the task at hand. The Doctor does care, more than he is willing to admit. But there are times he feels he has to put up a cold front to get the job done. Like in this episode.
    I like Danny. Not as much as Rory. But he's a good character and an effective way to keep Clara tied to life outside of space-time traveling. There hasn't been much of that since Amy and Rory left the show.

  • @ClintBandito
    @ClintBandito 5 лет назад +2

    It's not that he doesn't care, but once someone has died, they're dead, they can't undo that, so what matters then is saving the people that are left. It's not a dismiss of human life, it's an attempt to save everyone who still has a chance

      Me too :(. Especially because that scene was almost like a direct response to her opening musings about the doctor, about how he seems dismissive etc. He essentially explains himself in that scene, because Clara had those same questions/thoughts! It's so odd to me that it was skipped and not discussed, when it would have been a continuation of the intro discussion...I'm bummed but at the same time I'm really happy she appreciates 12 and Clara's complex relationship. So many hate on Clara (or, to put it better, a loud minority on the internet hate on Clara) because they don't even try to understand her perspective or her dynamic with 12, they think it's unforgivable for a companion to call out the Doctor on his behavior (refuse point blank to think he is in the wrong ever), to have her own thoughts, etc., which is just utter bs. Those things are what make 12 and Clara so interesting and fascinating as individuals/characters, and it's why their relationship is so compelling, why they clash and spark but also come together in important ways.

    As I said before, a fast Regeneration cause problems for the Doctor. His honesty is a good example. for instance he could say you will be dead in 10 minutes. He misses out Unless I can save you. This Episode was a good example. In the beginning the Doctor thought there were lots of People on the Train. Just one Person was being killed so asked them for Information on what they could see so he could come up with the answer and save the rest. The reason he was saying the bad things was told at the end which you missed out. He knew they were being watched so he had to appear that way so as not to give the game away. I thought you would have mentioned the Queen song, 'Don't stop me now', being sung on the Train.

How boring, how uninteresting and anticlimactic, after thousands upon thousands of lifetimes in hell, would it have been if it became just another "he would never" typical Doctor moment. "Do you really think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?" It's the same powerful emotion, the same devotion and love ("love is a promise") that made him punch a wall for eternity, and forced him to go against his own morals. It's ridiculous that any one who truly understood that would find his actions "unforgivable" and utterly against his character. If anything, it makes the Doctor more compelling than ever.

    @granddaddyotaku636 5 лет назад +2

    I hope you saw my comment from the last video. But what I said is that the 12th Doctor is afraid to care this time around because every time he cares he loses people. He’s tired of losing people and he’s afraid that it’s all his fault that people die. So he is the Doctor now reflecting on everything he’s done and everything he’s lost... so he’s not being a jerk to be a jerk, he’s pretending to be a jerk to not face the fear within him that he’s “not a good man”... ironically his fear is causing him to be what he’s afraid of... I mean he did lose a lot... you skipped the conversation in the reaction but When he says “sometimes you only have bad choices but you still have to choose.“
    That’s him clarifying to Clara and to us the audience that He isn’t trying to be careless. It isn’t that he doesn’t care about their lives. Sometimes It’s just that it’s easier to pretend, especially when all the choices are bad... he’s saying he’d rather not have lost ANYONE. But he had to keep going to make sure he didn’t lose EVERYONE... so he cares a lot 💜 he just doesn’t want to show it because he’s afraid he’ll lose if he does.
    Ps, Remember the second episode he asked “Am I a good man?” If you don’t care about the answer you wouldn’t ask. He DOES care. It’s just hard after losing So many people. He said it in his first episode “I’ve made many mistakes...” he has a lot of guilt for all the people lost because of him... 👍

    Yeah, one of the most interesting things with any Doctor is seeing how far they'll push the fact that sometimes, being an alien doesn't just mean that they're a funny Space Gandalf(TM) with lots of fancy whizz-bang gadgets, but that they're also someone with centuries - nay, millennia! - of life experience, whose sort of larger - dare I say 'cosmic'? perspective on morality doesn't always mesh all that well with the usual expectations of human sentimentality...then again, you also get those 'twinkle' moments when the Doctor's more human than any human, so I guess it tends to balance out in the long run, yes?
    (Or, to put it another way; just like the TARDIS herself, maybe the Doctor may not always take you where you want to go in human terms, but he'll almost always take you where you need to go, right...???).
