    I have absolutely no idea if this will stay up and not get blocked....in the original reaction they sited a big six minute chunk (again, not the song) so I tried my best with the information I had.

      My guess is The Doctor's 66 seconds with the foretold soldier. For many, its the highlight of the episode. The official channel even have that posted as a video.

      Surely they've got a 3rd party doing this. Because I can't believe the BBC proper are dumb enough to think a reaction years after release will cost them anything.

      Maybe you already know this, but if you watch the end of series 5, the Big Bang, at the end, when Amy and Rory go into the Tardis, you’ll hear the Doctor get a phone call about this episode.

    jenna coleman said that at the end of the episode when she's talking to danny on the phone, she deliberately said 'i love you' very loudly and purposefully looking at the doctor, as she was confirming that when it comes to the men in her life, she will always choose the doctor (whether you want to see that in a romantic way or not, i found that really interesting)

    "Sometimes the only choices you have are bad ones, but you still have to choose." My favorite quote of 12 possibly the entire show.

      @fleason771 6 лет назад +4

      Kelly Liles Well the favourite up to now, it's bloody good but compared to what is to come..Well the next one is coming very soon "I tried to understand, to reach out" Epic 12!! :-)

    • @kellyliles9273
      @kellyliles9273 6 лет назад +1

      That is a good one too but to me this quote really epitomizes the doctor's Journey throughout the course of the show. There have been very happy I'm very sad times and sometimes when it isn't possible to get it right. In the end he makes the tough decisions and you can see especially in 12 how he lives with the consequences of those decisions and how some still haunt him.

      +Kelly Liles mine is the inversion speach and has one of my favourite quotes. But I believe THE DOCTOR who is best at Doing speaches.

    • @kellyliles9273
      @kellyliles9273 6 лет назад +1

      I completely agree. While I am a sci fi fan at my core, what made me love this show is The.Doctor. not the time lord but the person. All of his stuggles;his journey, his development. And some of the best moments are when he gives a speech that shows you right through to his soul. Capaldi was so amazing at that. And yes the inversion speach gives me chills hearing even now.

    • @Ladco77
      @Ladco77 5 лет назад +2

      The inversion speech is my all time favorite Doctor speech, but the quote about still having to choose is such a powerful truth about our own existence that everyone has experienced. It's not as dramatic as the inversion speech, but I think it speaks to the human condition on a universal level, and it's a burden the Doctor has had to carry many, many times.

    A fact that maybe you don’t know. When Clara said: ‘I love you!’ she said it to The Doctor.

  • @HellfireComms
    @HellfireComms 6 лет назад +45

    12 being abrasive and grumpy is totally a flip of 11's character. This is him no longer repressing his pain and grief regarding the time war, so I guess Clara just has to help him to learn to be optimistic and happy again...or as happy as you can be with depression spanning thousands of years.
    That aside, I love this episode. One of Capaldi's best.

    Frank Skinner (Perkins) said it was really hard to film the scene where he turns down the offer to stay in the TARDIS as he’s a huge fan and has been wanting a role every since the show came back but I think it was long worth the wait as Mummy on the orient express is brilliant

    Twelve and Clara are my favorite Doctor/Companion pair. Their dynamic is unlike any Dr/Cmpn dynamic before them and I find it so fascinating. They have blazing chemistry. They just spark in so many scenes, scenes heavy with tension you can cut it with a knife. I love how they push each other, I love how it's not just us who are continually learning about Clara and this Doctor through their clashing and their coming-together, but also them learning about themselves. And this episode is particularly interesting because it explored briefly at the end this underlying aspect of their relationship that's just so fascinating to me: the addiction (or, rather, attachment). Ahhh great stuff. I've only seen up to s9, but I really do think Twelve and Clara have the most complex and interesting relationship because they are /individually/ the most complex and interesting Doctor and companion.

    This may be just me, but I do believe the whole point of this series was about us getting the Doctor we deserve. When we are introduced to 12, he's just started a whole new regeneration cycle and having regenerated so many times now, he's starting to wonder if he's the same person as shown through both his confrontation with the Half-Face Droid in 'Deep Breath' and him asking Clara if he's a good man in 'Into the Dalek'. Because of all that, he's been very emotionally-reserved and prickly, but now, he's starting to open up a bit more emotionally, and when we get to the Series 8 finale and that particular speech scene, that's when he properly becomes the Doctor again.

  • @emaloney2211

    It was quoted by either Capaldi or Moffatt that at first 12 doesn't care if everyone likes him or not. If you remember, at times 10 and occasionally 11 thought they were the most important person in the room. 12 may seem distant and insensitive but he is definitely more practical and gets on with what is needed to solve the crisis, whereas people around him dawdle and waste time. The Doctor was probably scared of being close to people after defending the population of Christmas, but he will realise that being distant will not help either.
    Clara understands now why the Doctor is the way he is and he can't be perfect all the time which is probably why she changed her mind, even though it means lying to her boyfriend. Great episode coming up next!

    I love Clara with 12 so much better than I did with 11...the relationship is far more equal and much more mature, and while I know I'm going to get cries of 'ewwwww!! he's too old!" (nevermind the fact that he's always old...he just has looked young in previous incarnations in New Who), but 12 and Clara have far more chemistry together than she did with 11 too (and sorry, not a Danny fan >_> he's adorkable and I don't mind him as a character...but I don't care about the relationship between her and Danny as a couple).

    • @ZakJordan98
      @ZakJordan98 6 лет назад +6

      Margi Fisher I saw 12 and Clara as more of a father daughter relationship definitely not romantic

    • @margisama
      @margisama 6 лет назад +8

      Writer Steven Moffat has confirmed in multiple interviews that the Doctor's statement to Clara, "Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?" was the Doctor finally saying "I love you" to Clara.

    • @margisama
      @margisama 6 лет назад +9

      "In fact, according to the show’s head writer Steven Moffat, the sexual tension between Peter Capaldi’s Doctor and his companion Clara played by Jenna Coleman has been bubbling away all this time. (Also deleted the original spoiler in this part of the article)
      “Because we’re in a very different place with the Doctor and Clara in the modern series, it’s been a while since I’ve seen the early stages of the Twelfth Doctor trying to pretend he doesn’t fancy Clara,” Moffat told interviewer Jaci Stephen. “’Oh you’re ugly, disgusting, stop looking so good!’”
      “In truth, I think in most cases with the Doctor his tragedy is he always loves them more than they love him. That’s his story. He’s always besotted with them even though he’s trying to pretend that he isn’t.”

    • @margisama
      @margisama 6 лет назад +9

      It was more subtle because people would automatically assume father/daughter, teacher/mentor and would be squicked by the 'visible' age difference between Capaldi and Jenna (and Capaldi had said because of that he didn't want any overtly 'kissy kissy' (he didn't even kiss RIVER and she's much closer appearance-wise to his age than Clara) stuff while he was the Doctor. But Matt Smith confirmed at a con panel that River was his wife and Clara was his girlfriend and he DID have romantic feelings for Clara. Emotions don't go away just because the Doctor regenerates. 9 had feelings for Rose and they only deepened when he regenerated into 10. 12 tried to put distance romantically between him and Clara because he regenerated into such an older-looking body (and he'd seen how badly she took the regeneration and even outright rejected him until she got 11's phone call). (just realized big spoiler and I don't want to be THAT person so don't read the below if you haven't finished watching this series or the next)

      But as we saw by Hellbent it didn't work. Hell he was willing to do anything (even shoot his allies and potentially risk the stability of time itself) to save her (He sure didn't go to that extent to save Amy and Rory or even River from the library). You're free to see it as purely platonic, but there's plenty of off-screen confirmation from the actual writer that it was romantic.

      Margi Fisher Suppose it makes sense, Moffat has added this kind of under the nose subtext before. E.G. The talk of dancing in The Doctor Dances was and i quote from the man himself: "It's all about sex, The Doctor and Jack are competing over Rose"

    I love this episode. It proved what I knew about Peter Capaldi, that he is a brilliant actor and I love his portrayal of the Doctor, all along. He just gets better and better and he really comes to own the Doctor, as this incarnation.
    I agree with you Jess, the relationship between Clara and the 12th is really good. I liken it back to Sarah Jane and the 4th Doctor. They had their moments too. But it was definitely part of the charm of the characters.

    Rewatching the entire Twelve journey... god he's gaining on Eleven to be my favorite. He's way more complex, like a flower that needs tiiiiiiiime to bloom and reveal who he is. This is one of my favorite episodes of New Who, it's very well done, I love the concept, I love the execution. The only way I think it could have been better is if it had been longer, with a serialized format and more buildup it could have easily been the best episode of Who ever.

    This is one of my favorite S8 episodes partially because of the bad choices scene. It provides a real understanding of the Twelfth Doctor. In crisis mode, he needs to be the man capable of making hard, unpleasant choices to save lives. Because he cares. I think Clara at this point is starting to get that.

    20:10 - Peter Capaldi was brilliant to watch, he displayed more of the classic character traits of the Doctor from the original series, just how it should be, rather than the 'boyfriend' types of recent years. Peter has definitely been the best of the new bunch. He echoed the mysterious alIen characteristics of the Doctor many of us grew up with in the 1960s and 70s or alternatively, caught up on classic DVDs and he absolutely nails the character to the core.

    One of the way I look at 12's character, is that he's the result of Matt Smith's Doctor having been hunted through time and space throughout his run by Kovarian and her group in order to kill him just because of who he is. He tried to be playful and happy and was pretty much hunted in to a trap he couldn't escape from until he died/regenerated.
    Capaldi's Doctor then goes on to question himself and it does take most of series 8 for him to get there. The scene at the end of this episode was one of those first moments you see that the cold veneer is starting to crack. Knowing what I do, I know Capaldi is one of the, if not the, most lovable Doctor of the lot Because he tries to put up a wall, but the people he meets just try to climb it instead of getting affronted by it. Just said for the finale, series 9 and 10. He says and does stuff that'll melt your heart! He's just a cautious koala bear really.

      I have to say, to this day I'm still disappointed that The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit wasn't a sequel to that serial. They even had the same (very distinct) Voice actor playing what was essentially the exact same role.
      That's one of my biggest gripes about the RTD era in general actually, many of it's most notable concepts and episodes were very unoriginal, and blatant remakes of older stuff (Slitheen/Foamasi, Ood/Sensorites, Satan/Sutekh, Judoon/Ogrons, Age of Steel/Spare Parts, Dalek/Jubilee, especially Human Nature, and more).
      I'm not trying to bash on the RTD era, while it's not perfect I don't outright hate it, it's more that I'm frustrated that it often gets the praise for this stuff, when the original works or monsters are somewhat forgotten, and really deserve better.

      Dalek is sort of an adaption of Jubilee, and they're both written by Robert Shearman, so it's not an unoriginal remake. Dalek also represents the end of the classic era and moving towards the new era of DW, which works excellently for Series 1 to start off the show, and it's also, in my opinion, the best episode of NuWho, and doesn't get the praise it deserves. For the Slitheen, I'm pretty sure they were meant to have the Zygons instead at first, but changed it.

    This is probably my favorite episode of series 8, we learn so much about Twelve's character in this episode and see so many different sides of his personality, his cold exterior also starts to crack in this episode, especially when Clara decides to keep travelling with him. The setting, monster, and secondary characters are also all a lot of fun.

    I've been really enjoying watching your reactions, and as far as Series 8 is concerned, I was looking forward to this episode in particular. I agree with you about your assessment of Twelfth-- he's not meant to be as instantly likable as his immediate predecessors. Without dipping too much into spoiler territory, I can tell you that his character arc is probably the most drastic one (from beginning to end) of any of the other Doctors in the entirety NuWho. Series 8 was admittedly not one of my favorites, but it was absolutely essential for setting up the foundations upon which Series 9 and Series 10 could build. I'm glad you're starting to develop a bit more insight into Twelfth's personality, and I can't wait to see how you're going to react to his later episodes.

    I feel this is the beginning of the 12/Clara relationship that made me start to love Clara. I feel the hate Clara gets is from a lot of people who never gave her a chance after she was introduced as the Macguffin in series 7

    • @caomhan84
      @caomhan84 6 лет назад +11

      Moffat tried to do something new with a companion when he introduced Clara, and they whined. Then when he tried to develop her and give her an interesting arc different from the other new series companions, they whined. When he used her character to make a commentary on how traveling with the Doctor can change a person (different from what RTD did with Rose and Donna), they whined that Clara "was too much of the focus." When he used her character to make another point (trying carefully to avoid spoilers here in case Jess sees), they whined yet AGAIN. There literally was no pleasing the haters with her. I actually had to quit posting on a discussion board because I got tired of reading the same complaints about Clara over and over. And you see it here on RUclips, too. She wasn't perfect, and that was the whole point. Neither was Moffat's run. But he took Clara on a compelling journey. It's frustrating that so many fans refuse to see that. It'll be interesting to see which side of the coin Jess falls. The acid test is coming up for that.

    Janet Henfrey who plays Mrs. Pitt (The first victim of the Mummy in this story) was in one of the best stories of Classic Who's final season in 1989. It was called "The Curse Of Fenric", wherin she plays Miss Hardaker who is menaced part way through by the vampire-like Haemovores. So, she's been in both the classic and new series and menaced by a Mummy and a Vampire!

    G'day Jess from all the way in Liverpool, Sydney, Australia. I just become one of your new subscribers (Wohoo)
    Really enjoy this episode. The relationship between The Doctor and Clara only get better from here. The atmoshphere is beautiful, the threat often scary. The clothes are sensational (especially Clara's flapper, which I absolutely love) and the music is soulful. I adore the 1920s look, juxtaposed with it being in the future.
    Its just my opinion, but I think the Foxes's version of 'Dont stop me now', is better than the original. (Runs and hides behind the two gum trees in my front yard, to listen to the Rainbow Lorikeet in the morning.
    Speaking about music being possibly blocked. I have had an unusual experience with Facebook. I wanted to directly upload one of my animations (Plug: most can be seen on my RUclips or Vimeo channel) to a very good friend, but was blocked because of copyright. The song - HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
    So I had to upload it my Vimeo channel (video, not yet on my RUclips channel, sorry). But anyway, it worked fine and I send this video to all my friends, when its their birthday. (P.S - I celebrated my birthday on Monday 26th Feb)

    In a perfect world, Jaime Mathieson (who wrote this episode and the next one) would have been the man to take over Doctor Who from Stephen Moffat and not Chris Chibnall. His writing has an authority to it and all four of his Who episodes moving forward feel different from a Moffat script, while retaining a lot of Moffat's better qualities as a writer.

    • @vdesatch6273
      @vdesatch6273 6 лет назад +3

      TheShroki And in 2007 I bet thousands of people were saying "You know who I want running the show? The man that wrote _The Empty Child_ and that stone angel episode."

    • @TheShroki

      Moffat's hiring was widely celebrated. Had we time to speculate about who would replace Russell (RTD's departure and Moffat's hire were announced at the same time), Moffat would definitely have been the first choice for a lot of people. Lots of those people would wind up turning on Moffat, but his episodes were considered "special" well before he got the big job.
      Mathieson is a lot less celebrated than Moffat was. His episodes were well received and I think some of 12's best moments happen in his stories, but Moffat had experience running his own shows and that's something Mathieson doesn't have and Chibnall does. My concern is Chibnall's work on Who and Torchwood had been pretty shakey and I'm not confident he's up to it.

    That 66 seconds with the Mummy was when everything changed for me. Before that point I was very much on the fence about Capaldi as the Doctor, especially with the dark place they took his character in the previous two episodes, and then apparently he was gonna just let Maisie die... But the moment he reveals his plan, that he's going to put himself in harm's way to defeat the Foretold and save everyone, and then watching him actually figure it out in 60 seconds... that was amazing. Capaldi killed it on that scene, from the "are you my mummy" callback all the way to the moment the Doctor wins... by surrendering. There are great moments in the coming episodes too, but this was the one where I look back and think "that's where Twelve became MY Doctor."

    Fun fact: Frank Skinner, who plays Perkins the engineer in this episode, is a stand-up comedian who does a bunch of hilarious jokes about filthy subjects. He's toned it down quite a bit since the 80s and 90s though. He's also been in some sitcoms and stuff and his acting used to be absolutely terrible, so it was a pleasant surprise to see how good he was in this. Fits the character perfectly.

    The doctor and Clara relationship is so toxic, yet beautiful, it’s so interesting, she didn’t save a doctor she saved all of him so he is so connected to her and she is a control freak who is in love with him but also struggling with having a normal life, then she loses Danny and he enables her from running away from her grief and she gets more and more reckless, it’s like when you have a friend in a relationship and your on the outside screaming “you two are insane and so bad for each other!” And there like “nah were awesome” and then there whole world falls apart, but they wouldn’t change a thing, toxic yet beautiful

    P.S. It's great episode, but I'm still confuse on how the victim is chosen, why there choose that victims to be dead?
    it's been 4 years... 4 YEARS since this air and I;m still confuse about this episode XD. I like this episode cause... come on, Train! IN SPACE!!! Again... can someone explain to me who's the victim that Gus actually pick? I mean why he choose those victims???

    • @eirei0789
      @eirei0789 6 лет назад +2

      Gus didn't choose the victims. They were trying to capture the 'mummy', and possibly weaponizing it due to its efficiency. To do that, they gathered a lot of smart and rich people to do it for them by trapping them with the mummy.
      As for how the mummy picks its targets, it goes after the people who have physical or mental 'weaknesses' first, be it disability, illness or trauma. Hence the old dying lady, then men with physical illnesses, the retired army man with PTSD, and finally Maisie who suffered grief and mental anguish from mistreatment by her grandmother. Though it is assumed that the rest would also be targeted later, even if they're perfectly healthy, since this was not the first time Gus has done this (everyone in the previous groups apparently died).
      Hope this helps. Also, thanks and cheers for the song link!

    • @azizuladnan2957
      @azizuladnan2957 6 лет назад +3

      So Gus want to use the Mummy for something evil. and use smart people to help him trap the mummy. cause Gus can't do it alone...
      And mummy pick someone who sick, but technically everyone have some kind of trauma, so technically everyone will die... just a longer period of time... like you said
      Oh my, thank you so much for this! It makes sense now! I understand it too! Finally, I will not get confused after binge watching this episode again and again XD
