    Your lawn is impressive! I'm also an avid gardener. I am still having difficulty maintaining grass. First question: how often should I water grass? (I live in New York) 2. what's a good fertilizer? 3. how often should I mow the lawn 4. is Zoysia grass better than Kentucky blue grass? 5. how often do you fertilize your lawn? Thank you.

    Ok, as you see the results were the same. So here is an easy way to take care of both "fatal flaws". Take a length of light weight string or rope and attach a clip. Cost, roughly $4. You then can raise and lower the pipe as needed either on turns, backing up or if you don't want to use at all there by no removing. There ya go.

Front yard was mowed for hay when I moved in.had small yard at previous home.i don't want to spend a thousand dollars on a yard .What's you advice for that situation? They neighbors across the street have a 5 deck mower. I'm falling way behind...lol

    Hey allyn. First off great video. But I have a question. We recently had our trees pruned and the guy doing it decided to cut the logs up on the lawn and left some sawdust on the lawn but not a lot. I now sawdust leeches nitrogen from lawn but the rest of the grass is still perfectly fine but their is this one spot that is completely brown I don't know if it is dead or not but what should I do to resolve it?

    Hey LAWN CARE NUT!! I have a solution to your backing up issue with your DIY stripper.... If you to a small rope and tie it around the stripper and tied a knot on the other end connected to the handle of your lawnmower with a U bracket not only could you just pull up on that while you back up but you could also lift and when you didn't want to use it tie a knot just enough to keep the guard down but lift the weight for proper safety.

    Hey Allyn what's up brother? I just bought the Toro Lawn Striper and I'm going to be using it for the first time this weekend. I have a question for the lawn care mastermind though: In your personal opinion, do you believe you can damage your grass from lawn striping TOO much? Just thinking about the blades of grass constantly getting smashed down repeatedly and wondering how that is for the grass in the long run.
    Please share your thoughts, I'd love to hear! Thanks and keep up the awesome videos!

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  9 лет назад +1

      David Atlas good question. Striping isn't going to damage anything, but you should vary the directions you mow for sure. This is a recommended practice even if you are not "striping" per say. Now, in my opinion, the lawn start to look bad when you have overlapping stripes all over the place after 4-5 weeks. So I only stripe every 3rd mowing usually.

    I was just thinking, what if you used say 2 inch Rigid pipe and filled with sand and capped the ends off the same way. get some rope attached to the pipe on both ends so you can pull up when needed? I am having some ideas brewing. put some eye hooks into the top near the handle. use one piece of rope so you just grab it and pull in the middle to lift it? I think I may stop at Lowes after work today. Maybe go even further and use some angle iron or flat steel stock and attach it to the frame arms like the TORO. Drill hole in caps of pipe and use bolts and double nut to the flat steel stock so the pipe can roll also. I think 20 or 30 bucks would do it

    From the video I see little difference, but for use I can see why the Toro would be easier. I keep wondering though, why don't you use a larger mower? You would get the wider cut that you emulate and don't larger mowers stripe better too?

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  9 лет назад

      ***** It's a fair question. I don't have a wider mower because my lawn is too small for something that large. The 21" is perfect. Plus, I got my mower for $500 and it will last me 20 years. A wider, commercial mower would be 3-4x that cost or more for sure.

    • @zieglarf
      @zieglarf 9 лет назад +1

      The Lawn Care Nut
      A commercial mower would cost 3-4x that but I was thinking of something like a Toro Timemaster which is about $1000. I've only recently started to really get into lawn care and didn't pay any attention to what's what. I'm sarting to realize that the Timemaster and similar must be fairly new on the market and that's why less people have them.

    What is the purpose of "striping"? Is it just cosmetic or are there other benefits. Also, is the visual effect just from the roller compressing the grass after cutting?

    Hey, what height do recommend to keep tall fescue at? I am so OCD that I am used to keeping my grass about 3.5" or so, but would it be easier to make stripes with taller turf?

    I used the weights from 5# ankle weights. stacked them 2 high and 4 long. Wrapped with waterproof tape,"hockey stick tape", then duct tape. Zip tied them to the mud flap. Low and narrow enough to safely back up. "Still have tire marks." Like that effect though. Soft enough to not destroy the fly wheel or key if they do hit. Also used a 1/8" nylon cord and an S hook tied to the handle and the center zip tie. This allows me to keep the striper about an inch off the ground when not desired. Cost me $1.25 for the weights at a yard sale. Had the rest. Can anyone suggest a really good striping blade for a 21" Troy bilt self propelled? Every one of the hi lifts I have purchased suck. It takes a double, triple stripe pattern to really stand out Thank you and enjoy the neighbors trying to copy your patterns. Props to the "Nut".

    so I did this but it didn't make any stripes. did I not make the pipe heavy enough? I used 1/2" steel pipe 21" longvand filled it with sand from my horseshoe pitts.
    thanks.

      mow the stripes east/west (the way the sun moves) and then go look at the stripes with the sun behind you. They will show up then. the angle of the lighting matters

      I don't know as much as you do about it but I am a lawn nut, I take pride that my lawn looks better than my neighbors.
