      or basically it was Urdu script our ancesters like Baba Farid ji used to write Punjabi
      just like i can or anyone can use Devnagri(Hindi) script to write Punjabi

    I am a Pakistani Punjabi learning Gurmukhi script, and I must confess that Gurmukhi covers all the sounds and tones of Punjabi much better than Perso-Arabic. Shahmukhi can be difficult to read for a beginner as it leaves behind ambiguity in pronunciation.
    I think it's about time we eliminate this religiously motivated language divide and adopt a unified script. This will not only facilitate easier communication among all Punjabis, but will bring the two Punjabs closer.

      It’s a good idea to learn gurumukhi script but I wouldn’t call it a religiously motivated divide. Punjabi was first written in shahmukhi long before gurumukhi. So it’s not a conscious effort for Pakistanis to not learn gurumukhi, it’s just the way it’s always been written

      Shahmukhi is older than gurmukhi maybe it was better for the older punjabi spoken at the time it was made. However, u can't shahmukhi is a religiously motivated divide when gurmukhi was made by sikhs and exclusive for sikhs only.

    I think if Pakistani Punjabis want to keep Punjabi alive, they should adopt Gurmukhi script. The amount of literature in Gurmukhi created in past 50 years might surpass the literature created in Shahmukhi since its inception.
    Why can't we see it as a script invented by a Punjabi (instead of Sikh/Hindu/Muslim) who wanted a better and easier way to write Punjabi?
    This same controversy of scripts arrived when it was being debated which will be the official script of Hindustani (a neutral alternative to Hindi and Urdu promoted by Gandhi).This was understandable as the elite Urdu speaking Muslims of some foreign ancestry wanted to distance themselves from the natives as much as possible.
    But here, we are talking about natives whose ancestors have been living before the arrival of Islam or Perso-Arabic script, whose ancestors created Brahmi script, the parent script of all south Asian and some east Asian languages.

    • @khawajausmannadeem
      @khawajausmannadeem 2 года назад +1

      Muslims Punjabi’s are approx 65% of the total Punjab population. In undivided Punjab, Muslims are almost majority in each and every district of Punjab. Don’t force others to change the scripts, but we should respect every script. We should try to develop a way to translate one script to other.

    I learnt urdu out of curiosity and now i can read shahmukhi as well but i must say shahmukhi lacks few Punjabi sounds and i get confused between Tey/toye, zaal/zey/zuaad, sey/seen/suaad. 😅 However, Gurmukhi has only one particular letter for one sound so it's quite easy. Btw great content.
    Love from charda Punjab 💕

    • @abhigyanshukla3233
      @abhigyanshukla3233 2 года назад +5

      Same with me, I also get confused often where to use swaad, se, seen, or ze, zaal, zwaad zoey, or tey, toey,
      For example :- toey will be used in shatranj (chess), batakh (duck), tota (parrot). Te will be used in most of the words, like :- taalaffuz (pronunciation), tabdil (to change something) etc.
      Swad will be used in :- (ث) sounds where between the English “s” and the “th” sound. For example used in “hadith” (حديث). Most commonly it is found in words of Arabic origin and is not used very often.
      Sin (س) sounds just like the English “s”. Most commonly it is used for the “s” sound in words of Persian or Indian subcontinental origin, like “samajh” (سمجھ ).
      Swad(ص) is probably the hardest letter to pronounce in the Urdu alphabet. It sounds like like a mixture of the English “s” and the “v”. Though is Hindi and colloquial Urdu speech it is often just pronounced as a “s”. A good example would be the word “sahib” (صاحب), which is often mispronounced as “saahib” instead of “svahib”. In pronunciation This letter is also more common in words of Arabic or other Semitic origin.
      Its twin letter, Dwad(ض) also presents a similar dual sound problem for non-native speakers. Dwad(ض) is a mixture of “d” and “z”. This is why “ramadan” (رمضان) has two spelling in English “ramadan” and “ramazan”.
      All three letters originate from Arabic, but the use of the swad(ص) and the se (ث) died out in Persian and reduced further in Urdu. Which is why the sounds are more differentiate by Arabic speakers than by Urdu speakers. Although trained formal Urdu speakers would make an effort to use the correct pronunciation.
      Hope it helps.

    There are some lost scripts which were used in medieval era to write punjabi, like Landa scripts used by merchants. Gurmukhi was created by modifying landa script alphabets. There used to be Mahajani script, which is child script of Landa script, used by well known Mahajan community who lives in Indian Punjab and used for writing even Marwari language of Marwar region of Modern day Rajasthan, India. There used to be a Multani script developed in Multan region and is a child script of Landa script. Takri was used for writing Chambeali(Language of Chamba region of Modern day Himachal Pradesh), which is considered a dialect of Punjabi. So, we can consider Takri as another script of Punjab. Takri, Gurmukhi and Landa script are sister script systems and Parent of these scripts is Sharda script which was original script used for writing Kashmiri language. But unfortunately nowadays only two scripts are recognised as script of Punjabi because they're used in official works of Government(Shahmukhi in Punjab, Pakistan and Gurmukhi in Punjab, Haryana, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi, India). But we the punjabis must not let governments decide the fate of our language and it's heritage, which includes it's old scripts too. We must make efforts to revive those lost scripts(Takri, Landa, Mahajani, Multani, Devanagari etc.) as well. ❤️ from Punjab, India 🙏🇮🇳

    The word 'APPAN' commonly used in eastern Punjab. I never heard it in Pakistan specifically in Lahore. All the accents are significant and Pakistan Punjabi has a blend of Urdu while Indian Punjabi contains Hindi words. Every City has its own tone and expressions which is a beauty. As pak punjab is larger in area so it has more diversity in terms of accents and types.

      You simply CAN NOT call it Urdu. It is offensive to Shahmukhi initiators. First, Urdu doesn't have any of its own alphabets. Its whole script is borrowed from Persian. Secondly, Shahmukhi has extra alphabets that are endemic to Punjabi tones and sounds that Urdu does not possess. Thirdly, Shahmukhi is way older than Urdu. Shahmukhi has been in use since Urdu wasn't even a language.

    Good summary. But one correction. Though it is generally a religious understanding that Gurmukhi was developed by Guru Angad, it is actually a continued evolution of pre-existing brahmi script Sharda that was in use in North West India (including Kashmir) since long time before that. It was not created in one go. It is just that the guru decided to use this as the standard script for writing SGGS (which incidentally, is not in Punjabi, but in multiple languages, but mostly sant bhasha).

    I'm Sindhi and Sindhi script was developed by Britishers in Perso-arabic. It has many different alphabets for one tone which makes it difficult learn. For example for writing Larkana, there are three alphabets to write R tone in larkana which is confusing for me. I believe govt should adapt Roman script and get rid of Perso-arabic like turkey. Which will boost not only Sindhi language but literacy too.
