Hey guys, I went back to an old-school Ghost Recon. This is the first gaming video I've attempted so a bit of work needed to improve for the next one... Hope you enjoy! Cheers.
21 years later and I'm not sure they've ever come close to replicating a tactical shooter at this level. I'd pay brand new game price to have this bad boy remastered.

Playing it right now, and I find it more fun than modern shooter's released these days (ahem, Activision). The realism is unreal back in the early 2000's.

I've always been an Operation Flashpoint fan, so Ghost Recon kinda passed by me, but after discovering the game literally 2 years ago, I think it's one of the most unique shooters ever made, and we desperately need a spiritual successor
Operation Flashpoint: Red river is an underrated game. I enjoyed the campaign the whole way. It's long missions too, most of them average about 40 minutes long to complete. Underrated game imo.
@@rssurge Well, I was talking about Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, the prototype of the ArmA series that came out the same year as the original Ghost Recon. But I agree, despite all its flaws and dumb enemy AI, Red River was pretty good. I do wish it had retained some features from the previous Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising thoug.
Well Operation Flashpoint is a full-blown simulation, where-as Ghost Recon is a tactical video game. They both offer a different approach to the same ideal, Operation Flashpoint choosing to be as realistic as possible while Ghost Recon chooses to be as realistic as it needs to be to emphasize its slower pace.
@@bud389 I have to say that each game does some things more realistically than the other. I find that the "grunt" experience is more realistic in Flashpoint and the ArmA series, with its emphasis on basic soldier skills, but when it comes to tactics and teamwork (when it comes to single player, at least), Ghost Recon absolutely nails that. I wish we had a modern tactical shooter that takes the best features of both.
The realism is unparalleled. It was really difficult to see the enemies through the foliage and ambient haze. That scared me more than anything when playing this game not being able to see the enemy even though they be shooting at you.
I mean realism in games like ArmA 3, Six Days in Fallujah, and Ready or Not FAR exceeds GR 1. GR 1 is very *hard*, and hard =/= realistic, but it's certainly more realistic than most shooters. Classic Tom Clancy games are way behind many modern tactical shooters insofar as realism is concerned, but what the classic TC games did right that still stands the test of time, is that they weren't afraid of absurd difficulty. Virtually no modern shooters outside of those I mentioned above (and projects like Ground Branch) are confident to challenge the player. Even on their hardest difficulties the new Tom Clancy games are piss-easy with their player assists/player gadgets and zombie-brained AI.
Sad to see what series turned into. Another ubisoft open world collect a thon, with regenerative health, dumb Ai teammates and in game purchases optional yes but if not get ready to grind in game that should not have grinding. Sorry for the tangent but its good to see the series in all its wholesome glory. Thank you for sharing.
What kind of dumbasses think is good idea to add health regen and think it will sell well because those unskilled casual will buy it and stop playing it and move on
Well, you have to consider that DayZ started as a mod for Arma II, and used that engine and graphics. Arma II came out nearly 13 years ago. DayZ's graphics are quite old themselves.
These games are gems and a reminder that the point of games was to immerse you, not comfort you. Thank you for bringing light to the roots of this franchise
Also *Ghost Recon* (2001) now has a new updated, award winning mod (Ghost Recon: Heroes Unleashed) That's got 15 years of solid Mod development behind it! GR:HU has all kinds of interesting updates to the whole Tactical depth of the game, plus there's literally hundreds of missions / maps / load-outs etc for it! I wish if Ubiaids would remake this. I still remember back in the day my uncle used to come to my dad's house and play the shit out of this game, he even made me play the game and introduced me to this legendary series. I remember back 2006 I think when Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter came out he literally decided to buy a 1000JOD (1410US) gaming PC just to play ghost recon series. Oh man those were the days I miss 1998-2007 these were legit the golden days for gaming. It sad how Ubisoft ruined this franchise by making it an open world rpg game looter shooter, not everything has to be openworld game the PS4/XONE gen made these open world games a pain to play and it became oversaturated.
I remember playing the PS2 version for the first time back in 2003. It was only early this year when I built my first PC that I finally picked up this game and its expansions for PC. This with the combination of the Heroes Unleashed Overhaul Mod, I have yet to play a shooter that can beat it. Plus with all the community missions you can find on modding sites, the content is almost seemingly limitless. No other GR since has even come close to beating it. Maybe one day a successor can come out. One day.
Games like this really did a great job at being so iconic and imemersive with such so little to work with. Developers these days could learn a thing from these iconic games like ghost recon, socom, conflict desert storm etc..
imagine a remake of this game. i feel theres a niche market of milsim nerds now that it would make money. I think the threat indicator could/should be removed entirely as it feels like an artificial stand-in for the character's situational awareness. this could be fixed with better sound design and vegetation moving when an npc walks through a bush or something. im just dreaming now, whatever, ubisoft makes enough money off microtransactions or whatever happens in Siege
A remake would be incredible. I feel like there's enough people who would really enjoy this type of game. I've heard games like Arma are somewhat similar. An old-school Rainbow Six / Ghost Recon game would go down really well now imo.
This game is so much tougher than I remember though!! I used to play it on Xbox and beat it. But now on PC I can’t get past the first mission! I don’t know how I’m gonna beat all the heroes unleashed levels
I found this game at a garage sale when I was 12 years old. I became hooked. I would replay over and over again. I would always send my squad directly into the line of fire and they would always end up killed or wounded 😂. Then I would spend like half an hour dragging my wounded foot to the check point. Lol
I was really hoping you'd show how easy you can get killed in the intro, glad you did, especially with the show you put on of shooting down around a dozen enemies before then.
I had Ghost Recon Jungle Storm (which came out in 2004 and contained Island Thunder as well). I had a blast playing when I was younger. I remember doing some missions with my late dad which was cool because he only played a few games with me. Thanks for the nostalgia and the remembrance of fond memories.
For you first review, this is great. Your voice sounds clear, you talk aout pretty much everything, without making it too long and you show off enough of gameplay, to back your commentary. Great job! :) Also, i just bought this game and both expansions not too long ago and im really enjoying it. My main issues are enemy AI and the fact, i cant see my weapon. (Im a sucker for guns, even if their modeling would be dated)
Man I remember playing this back then in 2014 as a kid. Nowadays I find myself going back to it and even recently bought the expansions on playstation and xbox.

your crosshair is so small, go to the menu, graphics, then change it to 800x600, it will give you bigger icons and crosshair. thank you for your video, this game deserves all the credit, and I wonder why no developers tried to remake it or inspire from it, even Ubisoft changed it completely !! They wasted Gold ...

MB93 the vanilla game is quite solid overall, however if you don’t mind investing half an hour to mod the game it really becomes an entirely different experience. There’s a basic modding guide available on Moddb, I’d also recommend the operator skins and graphics overhaul.
@@MB93 I was going to comment this. I’ve got about 300 hours in HU. I used to play GR back when it came out (at like 20 FPS LOL). After Raven Shield came out I kind of moved on from GR. But when I found HU I realized it was time to play again.
Just adding the m4 sopmod mod gives the game a good selection of weapons without messing with the games recipe too much. It includes really detailed models of sopmod block 1 m4's which would have been more true to what the ghosts should have been using.
What I love and find funny about looking at reviews of these original ghost recon & rainbow six games, is that they or "the Sum of all Fears" looks like clones of each other, obviously due to the fact that "Red Storm Entertainment" developed all of them.
I agree. I thought I was the only one that didnt enjoy the newewst GR. That stuff is such garbage. It's made for the new generation players for open world. Arma 3 is way better than the newest GR too. Glad I wasn't the only 1 to notice that.
I love this game. The tactical aspect, giving commands during missions is great. I've always preferred that along with precise aiming over the (in my opinion) painful planning phase of rainbow six. Ghost recon is still tense and requires thinking.
The original Ghost Recon is one of the greatest games ever made. The problem with games of today is that they focus far too much on graphics and not even on actual game play. The original Ghost Recon is a brilliant game, that doesn't look as good as today's game, but plays better and is more fun.
i loved that ubisoft had something like steam at this time . i was 14 and opened a international clan i remember the intense clan wars . Every clan had their homepage where they listed all the results. In this time there was no Level progress and something like that thats why i still doesnt care in actual games about that.
I don’t know why people mention graphics when back in the day, technology hasn’t advanced like it had today. Back in the day, people like me were amazed about the graphics. We came from 8bit to 16 to 3D to what we have today. People need to understand that.
I liked the game because of the tactical potential of having your ghosts set to recon with silenced weapons. Either that or I’d set up a recon squad and have my other squad suppress the enemy while they sneak around and open up on them. I have yet to play a game that allows you to do this again. Not even RB6 Vegas 2 was that immersive.
you said you bought it on Steam. i also did that, but i want to play with a joy pad (i've always been a console player cos i hate the thought of using a keyboard) - is that possible via Steam?
There’s a game editor so that you can create new weapon classes rather than just settle for the regular m16, m4, etc. I had a support class with an MG3 like the specialist
they dont make games like this anymore. i hope they make one like this with better graphics. real combat. that a foot step could get you killed instantly.
I'm still playing this and its expansions in 2022 on a Windows 11 PC with no problems. It's one of the most challenging and exhilarating games in my collection.
SWAT 3-4, The Tom Clancy: Rainbow Six (1998) and Rainbow Six 3 and Ghost Recon (2001). - better games in my opinion! if you want a true tactical fps then go play the classics!
Ya, they screwed the series up. The original version was/is outstanding. I don't understand why they don't make more games like this. I get people want great graphics, but game play is super important.
I belive I was the best in the world at this game, there was one guy I couldn't beat, this was back when you had too report your wins and losses with a Screenshot on a website to be ranked. The only guy above me you could shoot 100 times and he wouldn't die, he had some kind of hack.
I was actually ranked #9 in the world by All Seeing Eye in solo. This was a great game, and I was damn good at it in the solo version. There was no map I didn't dominate and I never cheated. God, I love this game.
The game looks best on Island Thunder, what with all the fog, rain, and thick jungle atmosphere. Also, there's a larger selection of weapons outside of the main campaign if you play Quick Mission.
I will always despise Advanced Warfighter for ruining the series. I know a lot of people love GRAW but for me it changed the series into something I don’t wanted. And now Ghost Recon is always third person and I hate that it isn’t FPS anymore. I wish they remade the first Ghost Recon’s in a bundle with modern graphics. Seeing a weapon in your hand and online co-op
GRAW was when the series started going downhill. In the early 00s, aiming down sights wasn't common in FPS games, but just seeing the reticule is still pretty good cause it makes you focus on aiming rather than the gun.
this is the only ghost recon game that exists. dont know what you kids talk about with all the wildlands or whatever same with rainbow six. never heard about seige, whats that? a mobile game?

You can game with friends via direct IP, up to nine players doing co-op. Adversarial not so sure about. You can easily make a dedicated server and maybe have a max 32 player for adversarial games. Probably more "how to" details in the manual that usually ships as a PDF with the game. I still play with friends weekly by direct IP.
sorry you cant see it but ghost recon 2001 is a horrible game, its a 3d game with 2d gameplay. its a game of lines. You hope to see an enemies elbow sticking out so you can shoot it 15 times. You literally cant walk past a room if an enemy is inside of it. They just aimbot you immediately and kill you in one shot. And can see you through bushes/trees/fog. Not only is this the laziest worst shooter ever made, its completely untested. The enemies with AK47s are 1000x better than my SWAT team. I can hide in a bush with a sniper rifle 500 meters away from enemy troops, to the point where i can barely see them without scoping... And it doesnt matter because the guy walking with an ak47 a mile away have 10,000x better accuracy than i do. Dude turns and kills me in one shot.. HOW? The game is beyond a joke. The enemies are way better than my soldiers.. THOSE ARE THE SPECIAL AGENTS! The game should be about them. Not to mention you die in one shot even on easy mode no matter what. its seriously the worst shooter ever made. The previous dozen or so arcadey shooters ive played are more realistic than ghost recon 2001. Ghost recon imo is a company who tried to make a shooter game, but didnt know how. So theres not even 3D weapon models. ITs just bad and nothing else.

Heroes unleashed breathes beautiful new life into this game. Soooooo many kits and extra missions, its glorious

Hmmm not sure about Raven Shield. I tried to get Rogue Spear up and running but no joy unfortunately.

@@MB93 I was going to comment this. I’ve got about 300 hours in HU. I used to play GR back when it came out (at like 20 FPS LOL). After Raven Shield came out I kind of moved on from GR. But when I found HU I realized it was time to play again.
Just adding the m4 sopmod mod gives the game a good selection of weapons without messing with the games recipe too much. It includes really detailed models of sopmod block 1 m4's which would have been more true to what the ghosts should have been using.
That's true, being that the Ghosts are Green Beret army special forces. The M16A4 is used by Marines.

What I love and find funny about looking at reviews of these original ghost recon & rainbow six games, is that they or "the Sum of all Fears" looks like clones of each other, obviously due to the fact that "Red Storm Entertainment" developed all of them.

I agree. I thought I was the only one that didnt enjoy the newewst GR. That stuff is such garbage. It's made for the new generation players for open world. Arma 3 is way better than the newest GR too. Glad I wasn't the only 1 to notice that.

I love this game. The tactical aspect, giving commands during missions is great. I've always preferred that along with precise aiming over the (in my opinion) painful planning phase of rainbow six. Ghost recon is still tense and requires thinking.
The original Ghost Recon is one of the greatest games ever made. The problem with games of today is that they focus far too much on graphics and not even on actual game play. The original Ghost Recon is a brilliant game, that doesn't look as good as today's game, but plays better and is more fun.
i loved that ubisoft had something like steam at this time . i was 14 and opened a international clan i remember the intense clan wars . Every clan had their homepage where they listed all the results. In this time there was no Level progress and something like that thats why i still doesnt care in actual games about that.
I don’t know why people mention graphics when back in the day, technology hasn’t advanced like it had today. Back in the day, people like me were amazed about the graphics. We came from 8bit to 16 to 3D to what we have today. People need to understand that.
I liked the game because of the tactical potential of having your ghosts set to recon with silenced weapons. Either that or I’d set up a recon squad and have my other squad suppress the enemy while they sneak around and open up on them. I have yet to play a game that allows you to do this again. Not even RB6 Vegas 2 was that immersive.
Obviously, didn't play the the tutorial mission "try not to stand directly in front of doors as this can be deadly"

There’s a game editor so that you can create new weapon classes rather than just settle for the regular m16, m4, etc. I had a support class with an MG3 like the specialist
I remember this game was impossible to play, the enemy AI has such extreme accuracy.
Played this coop on PC with my brother some years ago it's still playable today - totally fun 😁

SWAT 3-4, The Tom Clancy: Rainbow Six (1998) and Rainbow Six 3 and Ghost Recon (2001). - better games in my opinion! if you want a true tactical fps then go play the classics!

Ya, they screwed the series up. The original version was/is outstanding. I don't understand why they don't make more games like this. I get people want great graphics, but game play is super important.

I belive I was the best in the world at this game, there was one guy I couldn't beat, this was back when you had too report your wins and losses with a Screenshot on a website to be ranked. The only guy above me you could shoot 100 times and he wouldn't die, he had some kind of hack.
I was actually ranked #9 in the world by All Seeing Eye in solo. This was a great game, and I was damn good at it in the solo version. There was no map I didn't dominate and I never cheated. God, I love this game.

Just saw it offered for free on Ubisoft and I thought this was the one that I've played before. Nope, that's GRAW, this is even older.
The game looks best on Island Thunder, what with all the fog, rain, and thick jungle atmosphere. Also, there's a larger selection of weapons outside of the main campaign if you play Quick Mission.
Yeah I'm still yet to try Island Thunder, need to give it a go when I get a moment!
I will always despise Advanced Warfighter for ruining the series. I know a lot of people love GRAW but for me it changed the series into something I don’t wanted. And now Ghost Recon is always third person and I hate that it isn’t FPS anymore.
I wish they remade the first Ghost Recon’s in a bundle with modern graphics. Seeing a weapon in your hand and online co-op

GRAW was when the series started going downhill. In the early 00s, aiming down sights wasn't common in FPS games, but just seeing the reticule is still pretty good cause it makes you focus on aiming rather than the gun.

You can game with friends via direct IP, up to nine players doing co-op. Adversarial not so sure about. You can easily make a dedicated server and maybe have a max 32 player for adversarial games. Probably more "how to" details in the manual that usually ships as a PDF with the game. I still play with friends weekly by direct IP.

sorry you cant see it but ghost recon 2001 is a horrible game, its a 3d game with 2d gameplay. its a game of lines. You hope to see an enemies elbow sticking out so you can shoot it 15 times. You literally cant walk past a room if an enemy is inside of it. They just aimbot you immediately and kill you in one shot. And can see you through bushes/trees/fog. Not only is this the laziest worst shooter ever made, its completely untested. The enemies with AK47s are 1000x better than my SWAT team. I can hide in a bush with a sniper rifle 500 meters away from enemy troops, to the point where i can barely see them without scoping... And it doesnt matter because the guy walking with an ak47 a mile away have 10,000x better accuracy than i do. Dude turns and kills me in one shot.. HOW? The game is beyond a joke. The enemies are way better than my soldiers.. THOSE ARE THE SPECIAL AGENTS! The game should be about them. Not to mention you die in one shot even on easy mode no matter what. its seriously the worst shooter ever made. The previous dozen or so arcadey shooters ive played are more realistic than ghost recon 2001. Ghost recon imo is a company who tried to make a shooter game, but didnt know how. So theres not even 3D weapon models. ITs just bad and nothing else.
