- Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon PC Review
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is a tactical shooter video game developed by Red Storm Entertainment, a Ubisoft subsidiary, and published by Ubisoft in 2001 for Microsoft Windows.
It was ported to Mac OS, PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2002 and to the GameCube in 2003. Ports for N-Gage and Game Boy Advance were planned, but later canceled.
Together with Rainbow Six, game industry experts generally credit Ghost Recon with defining and refining the tactical shooter genre.
Oh man, the memories I have with this game. Ghost Recon, Operation Flashpoint, Rainbow Six, it was golden age of Tactical Shooters imo. Wish modern developers would bring back this style of games, if only for variety's sake.

chow860 I dont have steam, kinda complicated as to why. But what is VPN? I don't have any mods, as far as l've seen they kinda suck. I just have desert siege and Island thunder, if they're even called mods. 192.168.0.12 is my Ip anyway, no idea if that helps, you'd have to let me know before entering. Dying to play this in Coop.
Shonaripa No worries. A VPN is a virtual network. It basically emulates a LAN session over the Internet, practically allowing you to play online. PM me if you want to know more.

I wish I could Rainbow 6 working on Windows 7. As hard as that game was it was pretty fucking fun. The music was incredible. Used to scare the shit out of me too when you'd enter a room and some asshole was in the corner and mowed your whole team down.
Haven't played Ghost Recon in YEARS. Good review. At the risk of sounding like a pleb I do have to say I find Rainbow Six Vegas my favorite game in the series.

but just out of spite i might review Rogue Spear that DOES work with the correct flute playing.
Gggmanlives I like Vegas too but imo Raven Shield was much more tactical and required a slower approach. In Raven Shield, entering a room bigger than an average living room was extremely risky; in Vegas you plant the charge, blast the door and wait until the enemy shows no matter in what situation you are
also the ability to literally quickscope enemys annoyed me, where you just stick your head into the room and shoot an unsuspecting enemy within splitseconds
Fridollio G I've heard a lot of good things about Raven Shield and i'd agree with the Vegas games though i still enjoyed them.

I voted for this game in the Steam Awards "stands the test of time" category, because it came out in 2001 and I still have it installed in 2017. A few points this review doesn't mention:
You can select the rate of fire for most weapons, and single shot is a lot more accurate than full auto (as in real life).
The two expansions 'Desert Siege' and 'Island Thunder' add some great locations are worth getting too.
The game comes with 'Igor' an editor that lets you create your own missions. There are a lot of great mods - new maps, new skins, new missions and some total conversions. 'Frostbite' is probably the best - it puts the Ghosts in an Arctic setting and is practically a pro quality third expansion.

I find it weird how early Clancy games don't show the weapons in your hands
There's actually a very simple reason: it takes up screen space and inhibits peripheral vision. In real life, you're not aiming in the confines of a 1920x1080 monitor, dealing with pixels and framerates and render distances. In 2001, this choice made sense, but you look at a tactical shooter like Insurgency and see that as technology gets better, this just isn't an issue anymore and it didn't help peripheral vision tremendously anyways. By the time of RS3, this was just outdated and not an attractive look for any sort of shooter.
Thanks for reviewing this: one of my favourite tactical shooters of all time, next to SWAT 3 and Rogue Spear. Never have I played a game with such simple squad mechanics (only 6 options if I remember) that can be utilised to huge effect. Send a team to a dark cluster of trees, order them to hold fire, wait for the enemy to blissfully walk past, then hit the fire at will order and watch in glee as your squad opens up on the enemy, making them panic. Or position 2 squads of riflemen outside a doorway, use a sniper to draw out the enemy and sit back as your entire team works in unison with each other.
Speaking of the enemy, they were super intelligent, even by todays standards. They'll lob grenades at you (bastards), run for cover, and even distract you with suppressive fire whilst another squad flanks your position (double bastards). They really were a formidable foe and I had tons of fun battling against them singleplayer and in coop. Bloody good times!
Having said that, it was so fackin' annoying to turn a corner in a building and headshotted in a fraction of a second, instakilled by a grunt halfway across the map, or having a grenade thrown at your feet and your character attempting to run away like his boots are made of concrete. No doubt a product of it's time, but one that I'll never forget.

I remember doing that armor ambush mission over and over again until finally I switched up my entire strategy and used a two-man machine gun team to draw fire from the front while the snipers took out troops from one side of the overpass and the demo team hit them from the other. That's some real shit.

one of the best tactical games I ever played. Dragon Rising was okay but GR nailed the atmosphere. Too bad to see an amazing game series fall into open world, collectibles, in-app purchases and all that BS.

I love Ghost Recon, but I'm absolutely terrible at it. I'm always either too slow and miss obvious shots, or I'm too hasty and bound out of cover like a moron. It's not the game though, the game is great, I just can't wrap my head around it yet.

Salokin Sekwah I'm sure I will, had to do the same with both Splinter Cell and the Thief games. I tend to err on the side of caution whenever I play something even mildly stealthy.

Snipers are NOT worthless. My favorite thing to to do in this game is playing the custom game mode on elite with no squad and just a sniper. Great challenge

I should get this on sale, thanks for making a well made review of this game. A lot of reviews for GR1 on RUclips are bit... old, flismy and have poor mic quality. Awesome review. I want to get it on a sale.
It's just the best Ghost Recon. The feeling of first game is very rare in war games.
I cant believe this game called Russia invading Georgia in 2008 when in came out in 2001.
Way ahead of it's time. With even 2010 CODMW graphics and story this would be better than most of the junk they put out today, if not all of it.
I was so into this game that I wrote a letter to a gaming magazine in my country asking them to feature the game in their zine. Didn’t get picked D: My 8 year old self was so disappointed...those fools didn’t know what they’re missing!
Little known trick i found out back in the day: teammates are always facing towards the closest target
Reinstalled it and playing it now with add-on packs. It holds up well. High entertainment and replayability value. Still haven't found a use for support gunners though. Single accurate shots rule the game.
I remember being pretty annoyed at alarms going off after taking out enemies with suppressed weapons. Till I found out in real life, suppressed guns are actually still pretty loud, they just make it harder to pinpoint where a shot came from. With sniper rifles you're generally far enough away for the noise not to be much issue. It's been a long time since I played the original ghost recon, but it could have been an attempt at realism.
it not just the weapon that is loud, the bullet moving at supersonic speed is also super loud(the crack noise)
the only way to have a silent bullet is by using subsonic ammo, that's why in many games it gives a damage penalty for using a suppressor, it's kind of simulating that you are using subsonic ammo
Nice review, although I'm sure I understand your criticism about the accuracy. You would very rarely have to do a quick 180˚ turn in the game so running a low sens for better accuracy seems totally feasible.
I think the only thing I really disliked about this game was the escort missions. The game rewarded slow, careful movements, but those forced you along at a certain pace that made me rely too much on quicksaves. Overall though, one of my all time favorite games. Wish we could get a remake of this instead of all these 3rd person, health regenerating cover shooter that Ubi keeps pumping out.
My first shooter game.I grow up this game and such a game.
I bought this game yesterday on a PS3 for $15 and... It was worth it, I fucking love it, I remember sucking at it when I was around 8 years old and never touching it again, now I'm older and it's easier than I remember but it's still challenging. I wish Ubisoft remade this game but didn't fuck it up like they did with every single franchise they've ever had
I see the game wasn't patched, because those binoculars aren't suppose to be in the kits. Might turn this very positive review a little more positive if the game was patched with the improved features. :)
Good review! I just digged it out from the bottom of the pile along with the Delta Force games, they are both so enjoyable.
My older brother and i spent months trying to get past the game (ps never used cheats ) it was the best game and for me still is ,the difficulty the disappointment u get after reaching the last objective and doing something wrong ,its just ultra realistic ,u don't just sit on ur pc and spray some bullets and keep your health bar up ,here u get shot ,u are either wounded (1%chance ) or u die 99% of times xD

7:50 mission failed cuz you accidentally killed the hostage, not cuz the alarm went off. The alarm only effects the amount of enemies you'll be facing. Stealth is usually optional in this game.

Heroes Unleashed, ultra realistic mod in the works for the last 15 years together with first person weapon mod take this simulation to entirely new level of greatness...
I suggest three squads because you get more flexibility, but that's why the game is great in one respect, you get choice. I typically had Charlie with a lone sniper.
4:38 When it switches to the M4 emptying a magazine on an enemy mid-range without hitting, lol, Turn it off full auto jeez.
And you're in the middle of the open standing up, take cover, crouch or lay down, the latter two will increase your accuracy that you're complaining about, and you won't get shot by enemies so easily... Stop standing without cover...
6:05 Just a little funny you mix up the names of teams and squads. You are one big squad in a couple little teams. Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie Team etc.

It would be cool if you could play a whole mission in observer mode... I've tried (I didn't even know about observer mode until I tried to hit escape and I accidentally hit F1, then I couldn't move, then learned of this cool feature).

It's one of the first games I played as a child when I was only around six years old. Yeah, it scared me to death, so I replayed it when I was eighteen and killed all those Russians who terrified me as a kid. Extremely rewarding.

My dad passed away last year and this game for some reason sticks with me most memories wise cause he had such a hard time beating island thunder&desersiege so my goal is to beat for him and also the game is literally amazing you will ignore the graphics believe when your in you in it

Miss that game... used to be in the top 5 clans on clan base doing euro cups and international cups for the game... miss that time when FPS were all about taking hours training over tactics and positioning in order to stay alive as a single bullet could have you lose...
loved the hell out of this game. played 2 player on ps2, finding glitches, the rocket launcher pistol gun, gliding around with no leg animation and fun part, running my ass over this house without dying and using another glitch to hide underneath a bed and blast everyone that comes in the room.
Just beat this game on hardest difficulty without losing a single man... just as hard as dark souls I'd say if you keep resetting everytime you lose a guy
I love this game (both on pc and xbox), and also I love most of the series, I love how different these games were, yet almost all were at least solid (apart from advanced warfare for six gen, and psp or gr2 for ps2 - the rest including predator for psp, aw1/2 for pc and 7gen consoles, future soldier, gr2 for xbox and wildlands are all great)

Bought this game for the original Xbox a month ago. This is a great game and I enjoyed it (never did played the PC version though).

I wanted to try out this series but after watching this review I'm not so sure. The gameplay seems a bit trial and errory for my tastes. The only Tom Clancy series I really got into was Splinter Cell.
***** Well the game is pretty cheap in price and while there are some trail and error moments, you get much better at moving your squads around by the end enabling some impressive stratergys

Knowing Ubisoft, half of what they've shown is likely fake or "altered"
+Salokin Sekwah But if it ends up being legit, it could be one of the better games in the series. It's strictly multiplayer, so it has that team based planning idea. If there is a single player in mind, it could be like Future Soldier, or they could give you commands similar to Ghost Recon 2, or Advanced Warfighter. But the planning seems more like something you'd see in Rainbow Six, not Ghost Recon. I think it could have some potential to be a good game. As long as Ubisoft doesn't fuck us over.

I bought a copy of the gold version and nothing I do gets the game to run. Installed it on windows 10 which failed then installed it on windows xp it failed. Changed the optirons.xml file to no full screen and it fails how the heck did you get it to run??!!
I played it on Win 7, so maybe try a virtual machine?
I'm really late but apparently the physical versions have broken DRM.
The Digital versions may work better as they ahve the DRM removed.

holy shit this is dated
as a person who bought this game recently... i HATE it, the controls are horrible aand changing them is a nightmare, like, who the fuck thought it was a good idead to bind run to mouse 2???? there are ALOT of things old games got right, but controls are NOT one of these.
Targeting looks annoying
Targeting is actually very close to reality. It simulates spread caused by recoil and inaccuracy due to movement.
