One of the major reasons I ended up living in my car for so long was because it's really hard to find suitable housing with my dog, Halo. Many times, people just straight up reject me, saying 'no pets allowed,' even though I tell them Halo is my service dog. Sometimes, I feel like being a dog mom is like I've committed a crime or something, and people are really against the idea of living with a dog.
The struggles with Halo go beyond just housing. Despite everyone saying 'Oh my gosh, your dog is so cute,' finding someone to babysit him (if I need to be away) feels nearly impossible.
Halo has been with me for 10 years and he has witnessed all the major stages of my life: graduating with a computer science degree, ending my 8-year relationship, and moving cities and countries. It's bittersweet to say, but Halo has accompanied me longer than any other human in my life.
I'm really grateful my tech company lets me bring Halo with me to the office. I think that's another reason I've been able to live in my car for so long - my office feels like home. That's probably why I decided to have a mini birthday celebration at the office too, even though it was just me:)
It’s so hard making friends as an adult, especially starting somewhere new and not knowing anyone. I understand how you are feeling and hope things will get better and you meet some great genuine people. ❤
I’ve tried, and i’ve noticed that most people don’t want to make new friends. They just don’t… or it’s one sided and i’m doing making all the effort
I think that’s valid, I’ve noticed the older we get the smaller the friend circles become. Have you tried joining friend meetups or groups outside of work? If you’re open to meeting people there are plenty of groups that host these types of events just for the purpose of making friends. I would suggest not expecting too much to make friends at work because most people just want to work and then go home so they’re not really trying to befriend anyone. Most work friendships tend to be organic and if you click, you click but if you don’t then move on. I feel for you because it’s hard to make friends as an adult and I hope you keep trying. Don’t give up!! Also Halo is soooo cute!
I find if you volunteer at places on your days off you can meet some very nice people. Also, do you have any hobbies where you could perhaps join a club?

When I was watching this diary, I felt sadness :(. Especially the part where she sings the "Happy Birthday" song. No matter how independent you are, we, as humans, always seek to be a part of something in order to survive. We yearn for a sincere connection with others. Keep going, girl. Yeah, you are right; I feel for her cause she tries to take care of herself & her dog. I am also sad, as she displays good character! & determination. I wish she was in my city. I work for the US navy, military sealift command, I get housing/free Laundry service through them (over 25 years). I will pray for this girl!

I really appreciate you never give up on Halo, just like you never give up on yourself. You always so brave to try every possible thing to accomplish your dream life. You are a great person, sometimes it’s just not the right time and place to have another great person as your friend. But it’s always worth to try. I’m here with you Hannah. You are NOT alone!!!❤

@@HannahWurldgoing to church community is a good idea. As a church, we are called to help each other. Just be careful not to go to prosperity gospel churches and cults. If you ever decided to be part of a church community (hopefully and I pray that you do), do some research first about the church. I will pray for your safety and will pray that you find your purpose in life. I dont know what is your stand about christianity, but I will say this nontheless because I am not ashamed of the Gospel, you can never find happiness and satisfaction apart from Christ, only Christ can give you the purpose in life, happiness and satisfaction. Dream jobs, fame, wealth, none of these matters because at the end of our life, all of this will be gone. So we set our eyes not on perishable, but on imperishable, which is freely given by Jesus Christ, who came down to earth, and lived a perfect life without sin, and to be crucified on the cross for the sins we commited, so that we may be forgiven and to receive His righteousness. And on the third day, He is risen from the dead, so that we also who believes in Him will also rise with Him.
Hannah, you are not alone. You have Halo and Jesus. Read the Bible and Jesus will lead the way to contentment.
Hannah, I also am alone and I am an 80 yr old woman. However, with Jesus Christ I have a friend who is with me. He is so close and just a prayer away. I can talk to him wherever and whenever I want or need to. A good Bible-believing church will have others in it who will care about you and pray for you. There will be people who care befriend you. I will pray for you to find a church home where you will find real friends. God loves you. Praying for you from Texas.

I watched your shorts of your work days when you lived in Vancouver. You seemed so much happier there. ❤
You don't know us from a can of paint, but I'm in agreement with others in your comments in that maybe going back home to your friends and family would be best for you. It doesn't mean that you failed. You took a leap of faith to try something new and you have gained good life experience. But staying in a place that doesn't make you happy is not the way.
You're a beautiful young lady and you seem super sweet and kind and it pains me to see you unhappy when you don't have to be.

i was so proud of you when you decided to celebrate your birthday even though you didnt have anyone to celebrate with. when you do make friends you will have such a deeper happier relationship and life because you know you always have yourself, and that’s such a confidence booster and a flex.
I am an immigrant and an introvert, I have always relied on myself. I do not celebrate holidays or birthdays as I am very low maintenance. I even went through a surgery all by myself. And for the past 15 years, I have maintained close friendship with only one person. And she lives on the other side of America. I am self-sufficient and very content. I hope you can find your inner peace as well.
I am envy of introverts, that they do not draw their energy from other people. Extroverts needs people around, nature build us this way
No matter how content or self sufficient there will come a time you need others to help you or you will struggle on your own and work10 times harder than you have to. Hard for one person to life a couch but much easier with two that is the reality and if you have to pay to get help it get expensive very fast. What if you are hurt and injured? You aren't Superman and not indestructible and all will need help eventually.
Wow! I wish I could someday achieve this level of self-sufficiency as you. I am an introvert and currently living in Germany as an international student. It's very difficult for me to fit in and make new friends. I am always alone and do things all by myself. And I enjoy this. But there are times when I feel it too heavy to be this alone and have no one to talk to. Sometimes I get anxiety thinking of the time when I would be in some medical emergency and I would have nobody by my side. I do enjoy living my life by myself and not getting involved in dramas that usually are associated with having a large group of people to hang out with, but I still feel down thinking about how lonely it gets sometimes. I aspire to be as self-sufficient as you are someday.
When I was single and lonely in NYC as i worked on Wall Street, I served food at a homeless shelter for Thanksgiving. This puts life in its proper perspective. And helping others has its own rewards
I know that feeling like you do not have any friends is tough. But there is something also beautiful about spending time with yourself and enjoying life on your own. I pray that you also find genuine friends who will be with you in times of need. It’s a joy to follow your journey, take care ❤
Part of growing up is accepting loneliness, that you no longer have your friends from school or from your neighborhood. And one sad thing about work is that everyone is your colleagues, not friends. If you want to have or make new friends you need some hobbies, or go to group activities, like dances or activity clubs. But you are very brave for trying to make your life in one of the most expensive areas of the USA.
Happy birthday Hannah! I lived in San Jose for five years and now live in East Bay but travel back to South Bay and Peninsula weekly. Would love to meet up for coffee and celebrate life with you. You deserve friends… we all do. And we all get lonely. Reaching out to say hi, thinking of you, and thanks for posting your updates.
I also have a calm tan husky and live in a house in Mountain View near the Stevens Creek Trail in walking distance to that Microsoft campus (and I also used to have a vlog, but have unlisted most of the videos). Years ago, I considered living in a vehicle to save $20k per year, but decided to get a larger house as a master tenant and find roommates who would live with me and split the cost. It solves the price, loneliness, space, and bathroom/hygiene access issues you mention. It’s also better for making friends and dating to have a place you can invite people to to have dinner, play board games, etc. Ultimately, it affects your mental wellbeing, and it’s worth the price.

Hannah I was thinking this might be where you were showing in your video. I also live near here, 1 hour walk along the trail from MS. I used to sometimes use their outdoor space to exercise on weekends. I've not felt comfortable leaving home for the last six years or so (even before COVID) due to illness. So I have experienced my own journey with being isolated, losing contact with friends, spending a lot of time alone (which I do like in a lot of ways) and learning to know myself better. I thought I did know myself but there's always more to learn right? Ok I will go enjoy watching the rest of your video now.

I'm a real estate agent and that happens all the time. I'd say the universe is telling you to get an apartment. I'm guessing you make mid six figures and with that salary you can easily afford it and you would be massively safer and provide a much better home for Halo. Then you could also leave him from time to time and you would be able to go out and meet some people. You're obviously smart, resourceful and very attractive and in just a few videos have amassed over 15K subscribers. That's pretty amazing. So the more interesting your life gets, I'm sure you'll attract many more viewers. Go get the apartment. The universe wants you to be safe and happy.

i feel you there, i'm a proffesional and living in my sprinter van for over 2 years now and don't see the need to go back to a $1,500 apartment in portland oregon, don't know what your goal is but i hope you reach it, the way i look at it is best to find a place for yourself instead of sharing cause the little bit you save is not worth the headache dealing with people and your privacy, it sucks we can't have both so i just choose to stay in my longest and tallest sprinter van, wish you the best girly!

Nothing wrong with relying on others, we are all on this earth together. I started my life fiercely independent, and realised I was doing so as a response to feeling desperate to rely on others. Now I have a happy balance, and I found my friends through attending clubs for the interests I had. I did dance, board gaming, walking, things that I love, so I found people who loved those things too and were the same kind of people as me. Work has never really provided me friends, I don’t see how it could as they are such random people to me, and I am fine with that.
After watching this video, I just want to give you a big hug, Hannah! Life has lots of things to explore and enjoy. If things don't work out for you, it might be worth moving to the next place or just moving back to Vancouver. Lots of ppl care about you here! Stay strong, and good luck!

I have a lot of (admittedly unsolicited) advice to give about friendship. One thing that occurs to me is that before others will want you as a friend, you must:
1. Love and accept yourself and
2. Have a strong sense of self.
By 1, I mean you must emotionally internalize that you love yourself and are worth being loved by others. If you don't, you end up coming across as desperate for others' approval because you don't approve of yourself, and that scares people off because you are subconsciously holding them responsible for your own self-worth.
By 2, I mean once you have accepted yourself as worth loving, you must then decide who that person is, regardless of what other people think. In other words, become polarizing. By choosing to be something, you are making some people less interested in you and some people more interested in you. I went to a programming meetup a few weeks ago and made a friend there because we were both Dungeons & Dragons nerds. I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't care about D&D or even actively think I'm a loser for liking it. That's fine. I don't need those people to be my friend. But without having a strong sense of what I'm about, my new D&D friend wouldn't have had a basis on which to like or dislike me.
I think D&D is looked at differently now. 1980s and 90s most considered nerds. But now the younger generation likes all the old books. My son and his friends like Warhammer and enjoy Game store/Comics.

also if you dont value yourself or think you’re deserving of love intrinsically, you will not only scare away healthy people who don’t want to hold that kind of responsibility in a relationship, but also you will attract people who want to use and manipulate insecure people and have control over others. That happened to me during my early and mid 20s cause i was so desperate for validation, I mixed myself up in romantic relationships and friendship relationships with people who did not have good intentions. luckily i learned before i made any permanent mistakes like marriage or having a baby with the wrong person

yeah that was so rude ngl. And the third guy when she told him it was her birthday he just said, "thanks. Appreciate it." Like not even a 'happy birthday!' lmfao these software engineer type dudes are ridiculous
His excuse is strange. I can understand if he doesnt eat dairy but some people dont want to take food from people they dont know.
"Hate" really is a strong word, there's no point hating someone just because they didn't accept food from someone else; at least he's being honest about his dietary choice, and he did say that he has plan with a friend so he didn't want to eat. It's also important to respect other people's space and choice too. If he already showed he's not interested in getting a cake, he means i don't want a piece of cake no matter what the cake is made or or what it is for, there's no point adding "it's yogurt though", it feels forceful.
Imagine if he takes it and throw it away just because he didn't want to reject her offering. We are all grow ups, don't take rejections that seriously, everyone has their own lives. No one has to accept other people's food offerings. Plus she didn't say it's her birthday or someone else's, it could be a to go bag she got from a birthday party she went to, or someone else gave it to her which she doesn't want to eat; there can be so many possibilities without giving a context; he most likely would at least say "happy birthday" if he knew it was her birthday which she didn't say.

Cakes are not birthday cakes by default. she doesn't have to emphasize that they are birthday cakes if the goal is to share, unless the goal is to receive "happy birthday" wishes and appreciation. If that's the case, just say it's my birthday and i'd like to share a piece of cake with you if you are interested. People would say Happy birthday and either take the cake or not. I think that's the right mindset gifting things to others.
I know you had some expectations when you decided to move to California but it has been months and you're still living in your car and when you offer cake to the people they don't even come to eat it with you. Just go back home where at least you can have an house to live with your dog and your family near enough to share some moment with them.
This episode of your life helped you to grow a lot but you don't need to suffer anymore Hannah.

Disagreed. There will be always some pains before you can gain something. I work out and the theme is "No pain, no gain".
At 21, I’m living this life style for about 7 months, I’m also in the Silicon Valley. There are some aspects of it that I miss, such as getting to see my family, or having a refrigerator, but you learn to be grateful for all the simple things- i got blueberry muffins 2 days ago and ecstatic like a child. Though I don’t have a lot of belongings, I found myself to be more free, and i save lots of money, lol. You learn a lot about yourself and true nature of people. It has it struggles, but that’s everything in life. I’ll probably continue this until i have a family of my own, or until God says otherwise. You wont really get the joys of the simple life until you do it yourself, and why many subscribe to this lifestyle.
Hannah - Halo is so cute! It is worth it to live in the car, rather than sleep in apartment without him. He is your best friend no human even close to the love dog has for their owner. You are blessed with good job and good companion 🐾

I'm so confused. This woman is living out of her car like she's broke but she has a salary job, eating good food, dressing nice, and traveling to expensive places in her instagram posts. Therefore, she has money but is living in her car because of her dog? Something doesn't add up. There's no way every single place in the entire city will not give her a home just because she has a dog.
Probably because living in a car is actually not difficult. I just did for a month while doing a cross country road trip. Much easier than I thought as long as you have some money

Have you seen a counselor or psychologist recently? That might not be a bad idea. I’m just some random person on RUclips but looking at your videos from Silicon Valley vs Canada, looks like you deteriorated. I just felt like maybe you need some more help or someone to talk to. Depression or any kind of mental/psychological health issues is real evil, it can eat you up slowly.
I think it shouldn't be any wonder... being alone isn't a disease. Perhaps going back to Canada, where she does have some friends, would actually be good for her.
One thing helping her… it seems she isn’t abusing depressants like weed or alcohol. Sometimes accepting that Depression is part of life helps alleviate the darkness of the human mind.

First of all, Happy Birthday, Hannah. To your coworkers, just stay cordial. Hate to tell you, kiddo, but it appears that you are the only one who wants to be friends. Don't put yourself out there until someone takes an interest in being friends with you. Then go slow until you can find out if their intentions are honorable. Even though it is easy to say, screw this, I'm leaving, you would be right back to square 1(at least for now you are at square 1.75, which is still farther than square 1). Just let time take it's course. Stuff tends to happen when you least expect it. Walk around the office with your head heald high, like the successful engineer you are! We Asians are not quitters. Even though at times it does seem tempting, but I do believe it is not in our DNA to give up when we come this far. Failure is not an option....or at least not right now. Make a list of all your interests and look for people who enjoy the same, like in clubs and organizations. Go outside your circle to get what you need. It is probably there just waiting for you. Take care.

I just wanted to let you know I care. Besides , I would NEVER be friends with someone who turns down birthday cake! Who the hell does that! Because I am a grandfather, I have the power to see the future. The same issues you are having now, I had the exact same issues back in the day. If u enjoy sunny weather, I recommend Singapore! It’s a diverse beautiful place with lots of expats. Everyone is quite opened. I recommend check out sherry in Singapore on RUclips. She’s also from Vancouver, she now works at her own startup in SG.
But Do check the requirements for moving dog abroad. Just know not everywhere people are cold like SF. It’s not you! It’s the city and the atmosphere around the place you live. Hence you should definitely try seeing other countries with warmer cultures.
I lived in the Bay Area for over a decade. It is hard to make friends there. I live in Southern California, Orange County, now. People are way more friendly here and I am happier. The weather is perfect too. Singapore is a nice place but it's really hot, humid, lacks natural scenery, and you might run out of things to do.

Because it really is, don't give up not even for a sec and even if it feels like you have, get back up and keep trying keep going. Because it can only get better from here. What a heartfelt message of SELF LOVE. Even when the world feels hard around us, when we feel alone, we always have self. Sometimes we forget that this person needs to be our BEST FRIEND, for wherever we go, I'm there too!

This "dream" of yours is actually a nightmare. I just lost my younger brother suddenly at 33 years old. I believe he died from the stress his job gave him. Life is too short for this kind of nonsense. Go be around your family or friends. Have a relationship. Have fun. What I’m saying is take care of yourself spiritually, physically, and emotionally. They try to make you think working yourself to death or following your "dream" is the way to live. The only thing that matters is love and family. Don’t let them try to convince you otherwise. It will come full circle back to that anyway whether you like it or not.

I think an important thing to remember when trying to make new friends is to not be afraid to put yourself out there, but at the same time to not take things personal if not everyone vibes with you. You wouldn't want to be friends with people who don't accept you for who you are anyways. As long as you are confident in the great person you are, the right people will notice that and gravitate towards you :)
Be the best friend to yourself and always love your self. There are three main resources in life that you have to balance out though: Time, health and wealth. The most people struggle with finding the well balanced point. You really want to have a deep though on this and make life changes based on that thought. The personal happiness usually follows afterward.

a note about the "no dogs" thing in the bay area: It's not always the case that people say "no" just because they are biased towards dogs. Service dogs are welcomed by landlords if you have the paperwork to prove it, because they are not classified as pets they are trained to do a specific job. Landlords are worried about property damage, that concern and risk goes away with certified service dogs since they are so highly trained. Not to be confused with emotional support animals, service dogs are legally allowed anywhere in California.

It could very easily just be someone who saw the apartment during the day, liked it, applied, and got approved for it overnight. With how high-demand Silicon Valley housing is, some listings can come down in a matter of hours.

I’m seriously in the same boat. I’m extremely lonely and sleep in my car and my life was never like this. Always so many friends and so many outings and full of life. Just a weird transition but I think it’s gonna help us grow in to more amazing and stronger and more resilient people. Hang in there hannah!
