Golf is a game I play to escape the insanity of my day to day. My job.
I’m nowhere near as talented as you, but golf is not my job. When I play, it takes 3-4 holes to really let go of everything and just enjoy the game.
Golf, however, is your job. When you relax your game is sensational. Just enjoy it. a bad day at golf is better than a good day at work.

NOW THAT WOULD BE A GREAT SERIES - And surely you'll feel that Pressure! - I can see it now. Got time for 11 Episodes with a Dramatic 6-5 Winner concluding just before next year's Open Qualifying.

    Hey Matt
Good to see you that you (and Pete) have decided to give Open Qualifying another go next year. I agree with you having goals with your golf game and a solid plan to realise them. I also hope that you will continue with the Record Breaker Series though .... it is without doubt the best golf series on RUclips. Good luck with your golf in the future. Cheers from OZ ⛳⛳ Pete

Why dont you start a premier league style competition with you , shields , finch , carter james robinson , and 5 other yt content creators , 10 home courses so you play 10 home games and 10 away games , 3 points a win , 1 for a tie , and 0 for a loss . Big cup for winner , wooden spoon for bottom .

Interesting and refreshing video - i set myself 8 targets at the start of January for my golf this year, and i have hit 6 out of 8 of them. I have gone from 24 handicap to 15.7(!!!) , and love seeing the improvement I've made. And id say only 10% of that improvement has come from hitting the ball further. Channels like yours Matt has really helped me, thank you, but having clear goals gives you a focus and a reminder as to what you need to work on in the months ahead

Could you play golfers who have recently got to scratch and find out how they achieved it? What part of their game, physical or mental, did they have to focus on to get them to scratch. Also, can you talk to players who have been able to keep to scratch ( or better ) and talk through their thought processes in being able to stay consistant at that level?
I'm happy to hear you're going to go for the Open Qualifying again, Best of luck!

Nice ideas about setting goals but being able to accept the setbacks is an important part of making progress. Going back to your own club, where you know the shots and greens is a good way to measure your progress and relieve the pressure. That said you should not be satisfied with being in the rough on 5, 7 or 8, giving up distance for accuracy wont cost you much there but will give you control of your approach. On a course you know so well, you should be 7/7 fairways and at least 8/9 gir. You could make a "perfect" front 9 one of your goals.

Well done for having a go Matt, it takes courage to step up and do it.
You’re obviously a good player and coach. It’s difficult however to coach yourself. Having a YT channel is just like me having a full time job. You need to have an honest appraisal of what you would advise someone like me who had a goal of Open qualifying. Score based goals doesn’t help, that’s just an indicator not an effective goal.
    Proper focus on practice.
    Links golf practice.
No chopping and changing golf equipment.
Learning to remain even tempered during competition.
These are all things that you would coach me on and I guess you know this. Trying to make it interesting from a business perspective is an obstacle to your progress Matt.
Anyway, well done and good luck moving forward

I think competition is the way to go .
You need to be scoring around par almost every round .
Practise of course , maybe practising out of the rough so you know how it’s going to come out .
Maybe for some of the rounds donate a sum of money that means something to you , to Junior golf at the club you are playing , if your score is worse than 2 over ?
Title of quest- Portrush progress !
    Good luck !

I could be wrong (but I doubt it), but it seems the biggest issue/challenge for you Matt, as it is for Pete, Andy, Rick, etc, is what you discussed at circa @11:00. Your focus isn't really on the golf, it is on the content production. If most of your golf is played for YT content, and I'm guessing it is, you never have the opportunity to properly focus and concentrate in a way that allows you to play your best golf. So, you continually reinforce a half-arsed approach to your game, and it becomes your 'norm' - a habit. And then, when you want to play seriously, when you need to really focus the mind, you don't know how. I'm looking forward to your journey of commitment and improvement. In all the upcoming ITR and comp videos, I'd be happy to watch you play with no camera interaction, but instead a post-production voice-over discussing the shot/challenge/strategy/decisions on each shot. Pete and Andy have done a few like that and they are very watchable. It's a win-win. You get to focus on playing good golf and we get content that is edifying as well as entertaining.

There you find his brother Paul, PGA champion of the UK, or James Ruth, Joe the pro and many others. I think playing in competitions is with such guys would improve your game! Also i think you lost your scoring, your short game in the last years. I think that's for all a question of confidence, changing the putter and the clubs too isn't a sign of having this. And you change daily /monthly your equipment. Play short easy courses and stay concentrated scoring low, maybe so you find your confidence again. It's good for the nerved and the soul if you know thats you can score birdies and eagles! Anyway, I hope to see you many times in the red again! Cheers

No criticism intended here. It's your ego that's stopping you from succeeding, not your skill.
    I shall elaborate.
You're nervous in front of a crowd, that's 100% normal...play in front of other observers (not pals) more often and acclimatise yourself to it.
In order to get strangers watching you more often, you need to publicize where you'll be appearing in comps...ego could get in the way again here too, if there are "too few" spectators. However, as you are from the North West, play in North West comps, and if your subscribers are aware, I'll bet you you'll get some sort of a gallery...maybe 10-30 people. It's a start!
Nobody loves the first tee shot, nobody. Again normal. Accept your feelings as normal, embrace them!
See you somewhere soon, I hope! 😊

can I suggest that you make a proportion of vids where you stop explaining shots to viewers...to compensate for this, you could voiceover those vids....this would allow you to focus on your play....plus a schedule of competition events..for money if you are able...even if that prize is minor...good luck

RUclips is a bit like voyeurism (without the sex) where you expose yourself to all and hope that someone enjoyed the show. I can’t imagine that it’s all that easy to just be yourself with so many opinions on your performance and we know how difficult golf can be when your not yourself.

Obviously it was nerves at qualifying. I’ve watched you play for some time and it was not what I’m used to seeing.

Spot on. It's why Rick's golf is so poor, his no1 focus is content. It's obvious that anyone's game would suffer if they only ever film' stuff, don't practice, don't play comps and don't have any lessons.

@@andybt3989 I can't even play anymore due to injury and wish I had his game but you must agree he's got worse since his content got more and more diverse and higher level.

Matt, I think you have a shot at qualifying but I think you have to be willing to shut down the channel for awhile. It's hard to have your cake and eat it too.

I don’t think pros would play there best whilst trying to create a video at the same time. Keep playing the qualifiers just don’t film them

Might go against what you you do for a living but …. Try not filming everything. Can’t be helpful if you’re serious about doing well.
