I am Fijian and a big fan of both teams. It’s fair to say, teams go through peaks and troughs ….Wales is hitting a trough atm while Fiji is peaking. Heads up both countries, this is normal in rugby. Come 2027, I hope to see both teams going at it again! Rugby Wins! Vinaka Viti….heads up Wales!

I really enjoy your videos mate, keep them coming. It's tough being a welsh fan at the moment. I'm not sure if the problem is Gatland, I'm more of a mind to say we just don't have the players right now. I saw a podcast in the week where Brian O'Driscoll was asking Jamie Roberts about Ben Thomas, saying Gatland thinks he's the best back in Wales, but he wasn't on his radar. I think that sums us up. All the world class backs we used to have, George North, Johnathan Davies, Liam Williams etc. have all retired now. Whilst we have talent we don't have those kind of players.

Ive said this on a few posts now...look at the number of times we were 5m out with an overlap guaranteed try and we fluffed it (about 4 in 2nd half, i think 2 or 3 more in the first) this shows for the most part we actually played very well and the set piece was working. I genuinely believe its the pressure of the win in the heads panic at the try line.
If we had nailed all those chances we would be talking about a masterclass win over fiji -
Ref plumtree I think you might be underestimating how hard it is to tackle these massive fijians - although I will agree it might have been better to have botham in the fiji game just for the extra he gives and might have been able to contain them more.
Although one try came down the wing, where costelow should not have been so that is a concern, honestly I didn't see why we had him on the bench too small for fiji, AND we already had 10 cover with Ben so put a big guy in there like Eddie James or at least a specialist like Hathaway

Another brilliantly insightful review, Christian! It’s fantastic to see Your confidence, articulation and general demeanour in your videos get better and better with every video you make. Your videos are EXCELLENT and I really look forward to them! Keep up the great work!!
Now…. Down to the game….. a shambles in my opinion. We are totally devoid of skill, imagination, execution, flare and the basics of rugby. We are the most boring team in the world. I literally fell asleep between the 45 and 60 minute mark because we offered nothing. Full time whistle came and I just carried on with my day like nothing happened. I’m a die hard Wales fan but even I have no emotional energy invested in the game right now and it’s really sad for me to say that.
Credit to Fiji. They were brilliant. We have been on the right side of the scoreline more often than not in the close games against them but they totally deserved the win. They smashed us. And I thought the ref did everything he could to help Wales.
If we lose to Australia, which I think we will, then I can’t see us winning a game until we play Japan in the summer (and even that’s not going to be an easy tour)
One thing I disagree with you on is Winnett. He made a very poor effort to tackle Muntz when he scored his try. And whilst he is fairly solid under the high ball, whenever he gets the ball in attack, the play completely dies. I would like to see someone else given a chance at 15.
I dunno who Gatland will pick for the Aus game and I wouldn’t want to be in his position to pick either. Fact is, the players we have right now just aren’t good enough.

Thanks mate, I really appreciate you saying that appreciate you supporting me this whole time. Legend 👍🏼
First of all what you said about, feeling no emotion is what I find really worrying at the moment the longer this goes on for the more and more people are gonna feel that way, and I’m just gonna stop switching on to watch. If these games weren’t on 328, you’d have to imagine that hardly anyone would even watch them. It’s not a good look
There’s just a severe lack of composure Amberleaf, and I don’t really see how he’s going to turn things around at this point, but on the other hand is pointless sacking him because who do you bring in but then if we keep him in post and we lose all of the games in the six Nations like you point out is potentially likely can we afford to carry on like this
On a sidenote, I literally got free tickets for commenting on an Instagram post for Vodafone because on Friday they were just giving away free tickets and I was reading the comments and they were just given away multiple amount of tickets for free in my opinion because they haven’t been able to sell them and they don’t want the stadium to. For as long as I can remember tickets for Wales games of been like hotcakes and has been extremely difficult to get your hands on them now with the fact that they are charging £60 to go watch Fiji (And it’s more if you want to watch South Africa) Your pricing, average people out of the game I know you can’t even feel the stadium to the point where you’re just handing out free tickets to people on Instagram. Extremely worrying

Good review of the game and agree with all of it. You’re right that we can no longer talk about it being a young squad, Australia are in a similar place but they have developed a great deal quicker. I did not understand the scrum replacements a couple of minutes into the second half? Also Ben Thomas kicking to start the match? It did not add anything. I rate Ben Thomas highly but Sunday was not his best game. The coaching team have to stop this experimenting and decide who is 10, who are the centres etc. I would rather loose and feel that the players will grow into their roles. I was also disappointed at Will Rowlands, again I don’t like criticising individual players, but he gave away a couple of unnessary penalties which killed off momentum. I felt before the game that if Fiji were close going into the second half that they had a good chance of winning, they got better as the game went and Wales worse. Confidence is a hard thing to coach, but sadly demoralising is not.

    11 - B.Murray
    12 - B.Thomas
    13 - M. Llewylyn
    14 - R. Dyer
    15 - Winnet
Wainwright hasn't got his edge back that's why Botham takes his place for me. Bevan gets ahead of Tomos just looks a little sharper to me, Assirati hasn't got the size or strength for international rugby sadly.
Plumtree on the bench to cover he missed too many tackles to start , tomos Williams also on bench to take control if it gets away from Bevan.
If gatland stays or goes the outcome of the games won't be any different for the next 3-4 games maybe worse if he does go, I say let him do what he's got to do , if the 6 nations don't get better then we respectfully thank him for past services and trying his best with a broken system and hope we can find someone who knows how to get the boys blood boiling again.
The difference I see between this team and gatlands golden boys of yonder years I remember seeing the anger..the ferociouty in thier eyes as they were running at the opposition there was no doubt whether they were going to flatten the opponent they were running at did not matter how big they were! they had true dragon passion boiling in thier blood they looked like they would take anybody on!

It's hard not to moan, unfortunately. Feel for Costelow as hes catching flack, but he should never have been on the bench, we needed a utility back, especially with Chicken and Ben Thomas on the pitch. I think we have more in the tank, we just need a result or 2 for a bit of confidence. In the last 20, we looked completely deflated.

  • @sionjames89

We're in a horrible position now where Gatland probably does deserve to go, but there aren't any obvious candidates (we could realistically get) who could come in. You're right about Plumtree- he's got a good highlight reel but doesn't have what you want to see in a 6 on a basic level. One positive though, even though he made some bad errors, the attacking shape looked much better with Thomas at 12- for the first time in a long time we didn't look predictable. Shame it only lasted 20 minutes

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  16 дней назад

    @agc2757 16 дней назад +3

We had a good first 20, Blair Murray looked pretty good on debut and Cam Winnett continues to impress at 15. Minus that not much to be happy about!
You get the feeling it's _just_ starting to click but it's felt like that every game this year and as you said how long can we say that that's enough? If Italy don't play like they did against Argentina in next year's six nations then we're looking at another wooden spoon.
In my opinion Gatland has to go. He's a good coach who's done a lot for Wales but he is not the man for this job. Only issue is who do you bring in to replace him! As Squidge said in his video there's no right answer.

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast

Fed up of people saying Wales don't have the players coming through anymore which is completely untrue. Just looked up our playing population numbers on Wikipedia...We have a whopping 122408 adult male players and 114500 of teen males players registered in Wales! Only England has more players registered in those 2 categories yet we have a mere population of 3 million compared to England's 60 million !! It's the horrific standard of coaching, conditioning and player pathways is what's killing Wales off. I have seen so many talented players over the years at amateur level who were more than good enough to crack it pro level. When people ask them why they didn't want it/make it, they say it's because it's either not worth it or it's just far to political, E.G Cai Evans. He would have never have been a pro player, never mind an international player if it weren't for his dad.
Gatland has lost his legacy and reputation for me, with that press conference filled with excuses. It's unacceptable at any level, never mind international level, for the basics to be so unbelievably poor!! Also electing a 6/2 split bench as well with no real cover for numerous positions is a nightmare and Costellow comes on at 11 to mark Radradra...Utterly brain dead thinking from Gatland and the coaches. Looking at the pre match interview and after images of the game, the players just look constantly deflated and fed up but they cant do anything about it...Says it all really.
How many more embarrassing defeats to the likes of Scotland, Italy, Georgia and now Fiji is it going to take for someone to make the harsh calls we desperately needed for the last 25 years!?

Very frustrating day, when it started so brightly, but the team that was put out I agreed with apart from Jac Morgan Nicky smith, Eddie James on the bench , Costtelo i don't rate as a 10 let alone a winger, thought Camron did well along with Max Lewellyn, but Wales as a 15 seemed to deflate when Tommy left the field, and then Fiji scored as you say through a gap that was wider than the M4.
Exactly the same thing against Georgia happend, Wales started well but as the game went on mistake after mistake happened or ill disipline, Georgia's covidence grew and Wales lost.
I don't know what to suggest any more there was enough quality and experience to win that game, but once Wales go into their shells thats game over, we are missing leaders who need to be screaming out orders and taking the game by the scruff of the neck.

Ive watched a few podcasts and some youtube vids and have not heard what i thought was the best "take" that you had: when the welsh get within the 22meter line or goal line they failed to score 4-5 times. That was the whole game right there. Excellent analysis. I was eapecially frustrated with rowlands on that i thought he didnt go as hard as he could on the goal line when he turned it over that first or 2nd time. I thought i remembered him as a more powerful ball carryer? disappointing. I agree on plumtree also. Get reffell and jac M in at same time idk why they "have" to both play 7 when other guys can move about positions. Need their carrying. Have plumtree as a bench guy idk. The england game it looks like itoje and martin are their best guys on their pack, i didnt feel that with wales middle row. Despite them being graded highly by walesonline. I dont know enough about tchuinza either to judge him. I loved llewellyn and winnet is a smart player ive changed my opinion on him. I wish he was a bigger guy. I would have liked hathaway on the bench over costelow or dyer. But again, i dont know much on rugby im an american lol. If an NFL team like my Packers gets within 10 yards of the goal line 4 times and come up with 0 points it would be a guarantee loss of game!

Thanks Jacob, you sound like you know plenty to me👍🏼 Yeah I’m not sure what was wrong with Rowlands maybe he was just tired or something but it was very early on in the game and when the line break happened he wasn’t even working hard to get back and tried to recover if you watch your back. Quite disappointing
Unfortunately I don’t know what the answer could be. There’s not that many players he could bring that would necessarily improve the squad. Maybe changing someone in the back row might help the balance, but he said he’s definitely not going to play Morgan and Tommy together so I don’t know what he can do.

While I disagreed with the decision to go with a 6-2 split on the bench, because I don’t think Wales have the required quality of depth, I think if you want to do it you’re better putting Ben Thomas on the bench as a 10 and 12 option so that you’ve not got a 10 option who can only play 10 and has no idea what he’s doing outside that. The fact that Costellow came on also clearly shows that they hadn’t trained with the possibility of a winger or centre going off. If Rio Dyer is on then bench for example, Costellow doesn’t get changed and ready to go in. The fact Costellow got changed shows a complete lack of preparation. Gatland is getting too much of a free ride with the lack of depth when he’s doing a lot wrong himself

Gutted but sadly not surprised. I think my faith in Gatland and his coaches has gone, complete lack of competence and awareness of how the modern game works is letting down players that have some potential to be really good going forwards. Few players were let downs for me too, Rowlands looked old and unfit, Plumtree is a complete liability, Reffell's discipline this season has been shocking, Griffin clearly wasnt back to full fitness, less said about Elias the better and the first time I've seen a game where it looks like Anscombe's age/injuries are catching up to him.
    Given all that and injuries, I think I'd go for the 23 below for next weekend (obviously this very rough and thrown together);
    1 G Thomas
    2 Lake
    3 H Thomas
    4 Te Williams
    5 Beard
    6 Botham
    7 Morgan
    8 Wainwright
9 To Williams (if To Williams not fit Bevan at 9 and R Williams at 21)
    10 Anscombe
    11 Murray
    12 James
    13 Llewellyn
    14 Rogers
    15 Winnett
    16 Lloyd

No speed or power especially in the backs, the 10/12 doesnt work basic handling errors and suicide passes. Dark times if this continues.
