Ride a motorcycle with a broken clutch cable

  • If your clutch cable snaps you can still ride your bike home. No need to call a tow truck!
    This is for use in emergency situations ONLY as a 'get you home measure'.
    PLEASE NOTE!
    Prevent it from happening in the first place with regular maintenance!
    If your bike won't start without the clutch pulled in normally then remember to do so when using this method.
    Remember that others will not expect you to stop or stall suddenly!
    Take the size and weight of your bike into account. If in any doubt do call a tow truck!
    (Filmed on private land. I take no responsibility for any damage to your motorcycle if you use this method. It is your responsibility to maintain your motorcycle in a roadworthy condition!)

    Thank you! This video saved me on a dark, rainy night when my cable snapped last year. I was recently recalling the story to a friend and realized I never commented here to thank you for this info! Most difficult thing about this is shifting out of neutral after being stopped at a light. Lessons learned: If your clutch feels strange, investigate and replace parts as necessary immediately. Also - keep a spare cable around so you don’t have to wait for a new one to ship!

    I don’t know why people say clutchless downshifting is harder. It’s decidedly easier on my bike (2008 Ninja 250). I just rest my foot on the shift lever with a little weight and it slips down as soon as the bike is slow enough to allow it. No grinding. Granted, my Ninja 250 needs be be a lot slower than you might expect before it will downshift from 6th to 5th and since you are already nearly stopped the window to go through the rest is extremely short but you only need to do it when stopping anyway… and you already know how to clutchless upshift if you need to cancel the process. As I roll up to a stop you see me just going down, down, down almost as fast as if I were holding the clutch lever in.

    I think anyone who knows how a clutch works would know you can do this, I had a friend who before I knew him, he would ride to work every day and one day slipped with his bike and snapped his wrist out of its joint, he didn't know at the time of the fall but soon after he felt the pain and instead of going to work, took himself to the hospital which was a 15 minute ride across town, he told me he couldn't use his hand at all and had to get there with no clutch after attempting to shift with just one hand but in fear of crashing again he decided to just use a method similar to this. Still friends and I plan on reminding him of that day after watching this video.

    My clutch cable snapped while I was going up a steep hill, and I braked to see what was going on, which then had me stalled and stuck in 2nd gear in the middle of a lane with trucks flying past on a steep as hill. That was the most scariest experience on my bike that I’ve had.

    Not to sound over dramatic but I almost died from not knowing how to do this.
    My riding buddy was next to me and our wives and daughters were following us in a car when my clutch snapped in 5th gear. Lights were coming every quarter mile in a busy town in VA. Thank God all were green but I thought it was only a matter of time until someone was going to pull out and I would hit them. I was looking for a place to dump the bike. I didn't know this crucial skill that was not taught in the MSF course when I went through.
    Somehow I managed to slow to about 15-20 mph and did an emergency brake and while it bucked hella hard as it stalled, I managed to keep it vertical and feet planted when I came to a full stop. I never rode again after that day and the clutch cable is still broken. It's been 3 years and I'm missing it but still a bit wary of this...

    if its an electric start just put it in gear and hold the start button in and give it some throttle itl be a nice little jump foward and soon you can move, but its harmful and only advised for fourwheelers but if your too lazy to run with it go ahead

    Had the clutch go on my old 125 shadow and on the xt125 in each case all Ya need to do is find were the clutch goes into the engine case stick a screwdriver in the little arm and use your knee as majority of the time it's on the right side and just use ur heel or knee it disengage it simple

      Joshua Rose put the bike in neutral and turn on the ignition to get the engine running. Then give it a push, go down a hill or get a few bystanders to push you. Once you get to a running pace give it a little throttle and choose first gear. That should work.

    Ride safe! Not with a broken clutch cable. A man with a perfectly restored Moto Guzzi was almost home when the clutch cable broke. When at the motorway the motor seized he had no way left to keep the rear wheel from blocking. He died.
    Change the clutch cable every 10 years and keep the old one as spare in your tankbag.

    Wow, that was super helpful. When we were on tour, the clutch bolt came loose on my nephew's bike. We barely caught it in time. I have ridden clutchless before but usually in 3rd gear & above...is that ok?

      Glad you liked it WheelsNotHeels and lucky you caught it in time. This vid was one of those situations when I thought, 'why not look on the bright side of a bad situation and use it to try to help others'? :-)
      Is it OK to ride above 3rd clutchless? That's up to you and so long as this doesn't happen to you (because you look after your bike yeah?) then it is all good.
      (But if the cable snaps then at least you know to choose a hill, run with the bike and jump on, get a mate to push or simply run whilst on the bike yourself, then pop it into first or second gear and off you go. Beats hitchhiking!) Dave ;-)

    • @learn2rideVIDEOS
      @learn2rideVIDEOS  9 лет назад

      Some bikes do need the clutch to be pulled in in order to start like my SV 650. If that's the case pull the clutch in anyway to engage the switch at the left handlebar. This method should work even with an 848. Fancy lending me an expensive Duke to test the theory Phantom? :-P

    • @phantom_Biker
      @phantom_Biker 9 лет назад

      learn2rideVIDEOS no its the compression I'm on about.to bump a duke you have to put it in second then pull the bike backwards to get to the top of the stoke then do a clutch in bump start, if you don't it locks the rear wheel... Once going the gearbox is far smoother than the blade's which crashes an bangs even with a clutch lmao

      learn2rideVIDEOS stationary it’s a Yamaha yzf and the cables broke just need to get it back in n so I can start it up and prove it runs so I can sell the damn thing

      @@toptierfish9335 sit on it, rock it gently back and forth and at the same time apply a little downwards pressure on the gear lever. Should shift it down to second. Then, same thing and half a click down to neutral.

    Will the bike go into neutral if the cable snaps while in gear?

      I have a safety switch and you can still ride with a torn cable. You just need to pull the lever to start the bike.

    How about putting it in 1st and push starter button. The starter will move the bike and will start the bike.

      Martin Sage I didn't try this. Sounds good and if it happens again I'll make sure to get back to you about it with the results. :-)

      Better put second gear, than push starter button. It should start smoother.

    • @matjasp12
      @matjasp12 7 лет назад

      If it still bowers u, you wont be able to move the bike as the engine will be stuck (clutch plate will not be connected to the engine). Basically if you want to start the bike it must be in neutral.

    • @belekas2729
      @belekas2729 7 лет назад

      If you start engine in neutral and than put 1st or 2nd gear without clutch, engine simple stall. So in emergency situations, when you need to move from zero this works. I tried on my own bike. Maybe it won't work on all bikes, but yes you can start bike with gear with no problem.

      I spoke with my dad, he said to me due to the weight of the bike you are more likely to be able to push the bike in 2nd gear (well.. I did yesterday). So it does work, dunno how it affects the engine.

    what you should've mention is that its really dangerous on a crowded road and really messes up the bike's engine
