- So disaster has struck! The clutch cable snapped. Now with only the things that I've packed (including very limited tools!) I have to try and get back on the move. Luckily one of the things I brought with me was a Gear Gremlin Cable Repair Kit! Phew!! Not as good as a replacement cable, but a million times better than nothing!!

After watching this video a couple of years ago I bought a repair kit and it’s ready saved the day on the wife’s bike

Like last night. Two days after the previous calamity.
I forgot my 9mm wrench to adjust the tappets this time ( overheating. )
I need to get another kind of 9mm to put it out of it's misery.
YT obviously can tell I'm searching online for a replacement throttle cable however with this video recommendation.
I did purloin one from an abandoned scooter to keep rolling. lol.

If not earlier, you are now my hero..! I mean, how many of us would have survived a snapped clutch cable? I sure wouldn't..! I clenched my teeth until I saw the end of the cable coming out of the top end of that tube. Every time you dropped that spanner, I said to myself "Ok, he's doomed now!"; it was like watching a thriller movie for the first time.

Back in the good old days ( when my bikes had cable clutches ) this also happened to me
... but i made sure that it only happened ONCE ... I then always had a NEW, SPARE CABLE "tie wrapped" to the one that was 'in use'. And a small poly bag covering each "greased up" end. So, if your cable does go "SNAP", all you have to do is unhook both ends of the broken cable and hook up the new one. Hey presto, back on the road again in about 5 minutes. ( Just remember to replaced the knackered one with another NEW ONE ! ! ! )
I've done that in the past too. This is the first touring trip without and BANG, snapped cable! The universe hates me. That or my servicing schedule hates me.

Your premature snappage is something I had never considered so seconds after watching your new cable was installed I was inspired to purchase off Fleabay an Oxford emergency cable kit. You have inadvertently saved my bacon before my bacon has needed saving!
A decent toolroll and said kit will now reside snugly under the seat of my FZ6 permanently now.

Love your trouble how to videos, because they actually demonstrate how things really happens. Hate those how to's where they do everything perfect and edit out all the tricky parts and possible issues you may have.
By the way I had to replace my clutch cable and I just ask my local Costa Rican Kawasaki to order a new one from USA, it was $35 and it came with the cable cover and all the parts, just remove and replace.

Exactly that. It wasn't pretty and it made me want to cry a little bit, but it worked! Thankfully I only had to do it twice.
I'd hate having to do this at home and there you manage it on the road. I'm really impressed.
This is going to be useful for the 3 days trip in Cornwall I'll do this summer.

That was pure Andy Man Cam genius. I would not like to be in that situation. You handled it like a boss. I'm going to have to re-appraise what I carry around with me when I go out riding. Especially on trans-continental rides. Because there's one coming up in the not too distant future.

It’s probably best that you bought a proper cable. This is really intended as a get you home fix. I left it on for a few months, but the nipple did start to chew the cable after a while.

My Bike was stranded at a friend's & my local supplier was taking their sweeet time with the cable so i Ordered the kit & it'll ship in 2 days! Excited to get my bike home!
I’ve only just found this - I’ll let the reader guess why. The most astonishing thing I have found from watching is how the feck you remained so calm when doing it!
My own experience included: tearing three gloves…tearing the skin on two fingers and the back of my hand…breaking my leatherman…using every expletive I know (and some I made up on the spot!)…threatening to sell the bike……threatening to abandon the bike….threatening to set the bike on fire…..crying…begging…..and then, what felt like two days later but what was in fact just shy of an hour and a half, riding off into the sunset on my loyal, trusty and favourite steed with a smile and a “job well done” swagger.
P.S. my hand got infected……antibiotics should also come with the kit………

Getting caught up on some of your videos, Andy. Versys owner here in the States. This was a very helpful episode. That cable kit is a must have on any upcoming trips I make. I learned a lot. Really enjoying the countryside shots in Bavaria as well. The wife has an opportunity to get a job in Germany after she gets her PhD, so we're seriously thinking of moving there. Who knows for how long. The prospect of riding in some of these same areas gives me goosebumps. We don't get those kinds of views is boring, flat Nebraska. Anyway, back to your adventures! Really enjoying this Euro series. Cheers.

Having watched the early release last week, I completely forgot to bring up my recent replacement. I don't envy you doing it in a random parking lot. Also, crazy to see my name in the credits, proud even.

Thoroughly enjoyed your video. The biggest thing I came away with was the repair kit with the various size cable ends.😃😃 I have an 03 Yamaha XVS 1100 and in replacing the throttle cables, one of the stock “ends” is too big to fit thru the handlebar housing. After trying to trim it down with my Drexel, still didn’t fit. I went to Amazon, ordered some ends but even the smallest look too big. That kit looks perfect!

Thanks for your input David. Your empathy knows no bounds. Sadly your observation skills are somewhat lacking. The camera is mounted to the helmet, along with the microphone. No helmet, no video OR audio. If hate to think what gracious things you’d have to say if I’d just posted a black screen with a written description of what came to pass on that fateful day. As for the sweatshirt, I was running to a tight deadline and had people to meet. The effort and time to take off the helmet, unplug the aforementioned microphone and remove the sweatshirt, would have cost me vital minutes. Better to sweat a bit, moan about it and still be on time.

I had this happen today on my FZ1 despite lubing that cable generously at minimum twice a year, I used the same kit and it got me back I was so happy. It was sketch AF riding through London traffic knowing there's a slight chance the cable might come undone lol
I've packed a pair of gloves for the future now since my hands were minging after the repair :(

Well that went better than I thought actually . After the big cliffhanger I pictured something a bit more dramatic . Possibly you finding your way into a seedy looking local fix it shop where an awful Pulp Fiction " Gimp " type scenario takes place . So thank your lucky stars for that cable repair kit Andy ! It's OK. I do the same. Except it's always a vicious cycle. I expect the worst, but quietly kid myself that the best MIGHT happen. Which means I tell myself that I'm preparing for disappointment, except the quiet hope means I'm half lying to myself so when the worst happens, I'm still distraught! I'm hedging my bets in the wrong direction! Of course when it works out, I'm over the moon. It's happened twice.

Fantastic video, off on a Euro trip in a few weeks and went on Amazon and bought one. Last year we were delayed a day as my mates cable broke and we had to get a pickup truck to take the bike to be repaired, this would have saved us the expense.

Don't underestimate that, I instantly checked my bike, what possibilities I would have. So I can get prepared when going on a longer trip. So I can do some fixation till I find a dealer.
That's the best thing you can do. If it's all 100% before you go, then much less likely something will break. I was under pressure because of the boosterplug fitting, new tyres, gear indicator, brake pads etc.. So I didn't check the clutch cable properly. So all my fault!! Fingers crossed you have no trouble mate!

Some Enduro riders tie a new cable next to the existing one , then just connect the ends voila.

I did that on the Fazer last time round, but not this time for some reason. Good thing with the kit was I was covered for clutch and throttle cables. But I'll have a spare pre-routed next time!

@@AndyManCam Yep, also ordered a new Leatherman. Well, not the genuine Leatherman as they're so bloody expensive. I ordered a ' Leatherman like ' tool at about a 1/4 of the cost. Hope I don't regret it!!
I got one of those once... I’ve got two leathermans now! 😂 Though i needed to use mine at work and haven’t found any to be nearly as reliable and take as much stick as leatherman!

If you take you Spair cables and put a little solder on the end just enuff to hold the strands of cable and make a nice rounded end should feed easy.
It sucks when this stuff happens but look at the up side. You where prepared and it wasn't raining.

I'm becoming expert at not throwing a wobbly. Most patient biker on the planet now! Honestly no wobbly in this one. How could I? The overriding fact was that I was still on holiday and it was all part of the adventure! If I'd been on my way to work, different story!

The tip should have a bit of solder on it to keep it from fraying since you have to cut it to length anyway.

That's a great idea. Would have really helped with threading it. Assuming the solder was not too bulbous to pas through the cable outer!!

Absolutely. I think most Versys riders have had a clutch d´cable issue! Either stiffness or full on snappage. The kit is brilliant.

OMG! What is it with Kawi clutch cables? My KZ550’s clutch cable snapped so many times (always at the lever) I took to keeping a spare on hand at all times.
I must admit that I#ve only ever had cables snap on a kawasaki! Must be some kind of conspiracy!
This is exactly what i needed. got a similar emergency repair kit that im going to use once i manage to get off work when its not pitch black outside. for some reason i dont like working with tiny nipples, lubricant and sexy gloves in pitch black, i'm so very very afraid of them nipples just getting completely lost.

Hidy high, Andy my man. I replaced the clutch cable on the versys today. Faff does not begin to describe the arduous load of shit to get a new cable in. If you follow the Kawasaki service manual, i.e. first attach the cable on top at the lever, then by magic try to get that little stubby knob into the holder at the bottom with the clutch under tension. Ha fucking ha. It does not really work. Part two in next week's installment when I redo it to properly seat the cable at the bottom while swearing profusely. Also, the old cable was so gummed up with a combination of old grease and the bike sitting at the dealer's in the sun for three years before I bought it, that it made me think that it's very very likely to be the case with just about all the lubricated parts of the bike, i.e. engine, crank, forks, wheel bearings, head stock bearing etc. I think I'll have to rent a garage this christmas and strip and rebuild the bike. What fun.

Smart emergencykit! Kinda cheating to use a new cable ;) I would have had to shift gears without clutching (only shfit when speed of engine and tranny are equal) or do a makeshift footclutch.

I waisted around 3 hours, first attempt was good if was on the road, almost 0 free play, 2nd attempt, too much slack and itwouldn't disengage. I already ordered a brand new cable!

In order to get to the end of my clutch cable, I have to take off the side plastics, seat and remove the fuel tank.
Looks like I'm going to have to invest in a small traveling tool kit, as well as a spare cable!
It's always a snowball effect isn't it! One tool means you need another tool, but that tool doesn't work unless you've got the third tool...

how fast you usually cruise on motorway? I mean if there is no limit :)
TBH I never really go over 130kmh (80mph). Over that is just uncomfortable in the wind, tiring and the fuel economy takes such a dive that I don't gain anything because I have to stop more often for fuel. Pretty boring I know! Sorry! I do blarst up to 160kmh every now and then, but only for shitz and giggles as it's exhausting.

Good God! Just buy extra cables. They cost nothing (the inexpensive kind) and route them the same.
Except his kit takes up a quarter of the space of a complete cable and also costs a sixth of the price! I've had bikes that never needed a cable, so I'd rather spend the 5€ just in case and forget about it.
