I work as a mechanic at a Honda main dealer and even there I try to give new riders advice, we get a lot of new riders bringing bikes in to adjust chains at £15 a time, I always try to show them how to do it, some we never see again because they took the advice and some understandably would rather have us do it because they have 0 mechanical knowledge at all, but I like being able to show people the simple things and hopefully save them some money in the process
Liam.. You Sir are a shining light.. that's exactly what every dealer could do, we live in a digital age now and this generation of new riders just haven't had the inspiration to fix things while growing up.. not because nobody cares, but because things in general are less "repairable".. its a throw away age, so the mentality doesn't take route, it's more likely they'll just throw things out and buy new... But costs aside, Main dealer technicians are possibly the most trusted and knowledgeable people available, so a lesson from YOU... is ten times the lesson from a YT video aye.! Thanks for what you're doing mate, and keep at it..! Del.
One additional tip I could give is to use old cable to route the new one in. It is especially useful on sports bikes when you have to get rid of fairings to even get to the cable, and some cables tend to even go through the frame. In most cases simply taping new cable end to end is enough. But beware it's possible to scratch something along the way when, like in case of this Boneville cable is forged.
This, bit of tape goes a long way.
@@wobblysauce That is what he said.
That was actually a good tip. Most people post little BS things, just to seem knowledgeable. Like the other comment on this thread.
As someone with no mechanical knowledge at all and a total fear of messing with any part of the bike myself, I just followed these instructions - and it works perfectly! Thank you :)
Most welcome Robert, glad it helped you, and good on you for getting stuck in, now you know how to do it!
THE best and most honest clutch replacement video I've seen on YT. Thank you so much!
It's just a pity that my bike is not a Triumph...but maybe the process will be similar to my bike's...
Thanks for the kind feedback. Glad it helped!
Very grateful for your tutorial videos, I lack some skills and confidence in these matters. With your help I take on these jobs, apart from savings money. The immense satisfaction it gives me, it's so rewarding, thankyou so much.
You're most welcome buddy, im glad we can help, confidence is everything aye... have fun with your bike, there's way more to be enjoyed than just riding it..
Gotta say, this was so incredibly helpful. I can do some stuff, but your video was perfectly detailed, straight to the point, and shot perfectly for a pause-and-go instructional vid. I’ve been riding for a long time, but have been wanting to dive in more on maintenance. This one’s outstanding. Highly recommended for anybody who loves to ride and might be a little timid getting into minor maintenance. Thank you!
You’re most welcome, thank you for your kind feedback, and good luck with your projects!
Simple skills and back to basics👍. Great video Del for new and older riders, always something to learn or relearn!
Glad you enjoyed it Jeff, simple enough and a good money saver.
I fitted the triumph after market cable guide today. The bike wouldn’t shift after I replaced it.I managed to sort it out after watching this video so thanks for posting.
Nice work Rachael, glad to hear the video could help you out.. take care and have a great weekend !
Yes, these "simple" examples are fantastic! Thanks so much!
You're very welcome!
I keep videos like this one in my favourites so I can rewatch if I'm going to do some work on the bike. big savings over dealership prices when you can do wee bits n bobs yourself, n videos like this just show you how easy it is
Thanks Alan, that's the point, some of these jobs are really straight forward, and it's purely the fear of the unknown that keeps many people from taking care of their own basic repairs.
This type of really basic stuff is what got me started watching your channel, and honestly gave me the confidence to work on my own bike. It is SO IMPORTANT that people who WANT to do it can find the information. Once they can see how easy it is to do, they will try. And by doing small things, you learn you can do bigger things. Build that confidence up.
Now I am bidding on wrecked bikes to see if I can fix them up... I have a different problem. :)
Thanks buddy, am glad you enjoy the videos, and good luck with the wrecked bike projects, but if I may offer one caution to be conscious of any difficulties once they're finished, here in England bikes that have been officially written off and sold by insurance companies can be difficult to insure and re-register and more importantly, difficult to sell... maybe it's different there, but just a consideration maybe before you throw money at it! It's great if the bikes are purely for you and you end up with something that cost you far less than a clean one would have, but if they're to sell on it's worth being aware of those kind of issues... have a great week, ride safe!
@@Moonfleet41 same here. Very difficult to register for street use. I am actually bidding on some offroad only bikes right now, so no worries on plates here for those.
Every now and then I find a bike on my "wish list" that I would keep just for myself. I have never won one of those, because usually someone else also wants that bike to collect. But its fun to look.
Dear Del… , this is very important, teach them well. Believe it or not, there are even so called dealers out there who promise you wonders within no time and ask for little money, but they have no clue , what their mechanics are capable of or not.
A friend picked up her 883 and the clutch cable was treated so bad by not checking if you could still steer properly from one side to the other… it was so bad under tension when the front was relaxed to the left while parking … such an easy task but we need you and your way of teaching !!! Keep on such lessons and thank you on behalf of all the new guys out there !!
Thank you for the video! Even we have learned this many years ago, it was worth to look the movie. By the way, when i drove my Honda CB500 Four forthy years ago, I helped to a Suzuki GT500 driver with my set of steel wires and screwable nipples to repair his bowden cable.
I’ve saved thousands of US dollars over the years by doing as much simple maintenance as I can. Oil/filter changes, chain maintenance are two things every biker should know how to do. My Triumph dealer wants $120 dollars for an oil change. I can do it for $60, including OEM filter.
couldn’t stress this enough, if you own a bike, get the shop manual for it. Once you’ve reviewed the steps that the manual prescribes, the RUclips videos make 1000% more sense and will stop you from the pit falls that all bikes are adjusted the same. I can’t say that I had any luck with any of the slinky glide products though. The throttle cables literally wouldn’t glide (ironically enough) and the clutch cable was inexplicably 30 mm too short. Had to clean and lube the old throttle cables and sourced a new OEM cable when I did this job.
More than anything though, it’s great to provide people with the drive and interest for doing these jobs themselves! 👍
Yeah, you're right buddy, the service manual is your Bible, even if you're isn't laid out with step by step guides and instruction, then at least it will still have all the correct settings, tolerances and specifications.. and setting things up right is half the battle. Take care and have a great week.. D&Px
Thanks for the video! I’m one of those “new guys” just got an 03 virago a few months ago and looking to do most of maintenance work by learning from videos like these. I really do appreciate it :)
Welcome aboard Adam, and thank you for your support.. never be afraid to ask, there is always someone out there in Internet land who can help..
Great job 👍 Sure, it’s a basic thing, but your method and explanation was succinct, and easily understood by anyone who has even the slightest understanding of things mechanical. Perfect 👍😎
Awesome, thank you for such kind feedback my friend.
Lesson learned yesterday started my 600 and was checking a repair on my exhaust.
All fine I set off bike was not pulling right but not that bad as I could only do 30 anyway.
On way home it felt jumpy then was reviving at 2.5 not my normal tick over of 1.5.
I had a similar problem years ago on my 250 that time it was the cluth plates.
I thought this is all I need as I no longer have anywhere in doors to work on it.
Got the bike onto my front garden then noticed the problem.
I didnt push the choke all the way back doh!
I'm 61 been riding since 16 years old.
So your never to old to cock things up.
ha ha I'm so glad you told us that because at 56 I still do stupid things like that! It's kinda funny as long as your friends don't see as you'll never hear the end of it! Keep smiling and have a good week mate.
@@Moonfleet41 lol and you both
Easy to do ! Thanks for given us “juniors” the confidence to do so !😊
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this instructional video. As mentioned by Twin Phill I too lack some skills and confidence in these matters, your videos encourages me to do these jobs. Working on my bike is also rewarding , Thank you !
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for your kind feedback.
@@Moonfleet41 Hello, thanks for your replay. I wanted to ask if you would know where I can buy/order (I am in Canada longer than the std clutch and brakes cables for T120. The reason is that I would like to add raisers and the std ones are too short. Hope this is ok with you in case you can point me to some vendors.
Thank you so much DelBoy! I have a 2018 T120 so the procedure was slightly different, but as a complete amateur your guidance was so helpful!
You're welcome Sebastian, and thank you for your kind feedback.
Nice and clear instruction, Del.
Let's hope there aren't any keyboard engineers watching. lol
Oh there always is Tim, where do you think they learn from..!
Appreciate you making this, never done it but wanted a quick " how to"
Perfect explained and executed, thankyou !!🙂
You're welcome Martin.
I appreciate your detailed videos. with 50 K mikes things are needing to be replaced. Clutch cable broke and I now can fix it. Hardest part was finding one in the USA, so I ordered a spare.
Just got a grom clone for $400 and the main issue is the clutch cable is messed up. I think it’s already improperly routed because the seller said it was the cable that came with the bike and lot of slack.
Pretty sure the cable is broken. Official cable is like $60 which is crazy for a clone bike. But I found some for about $10.
I mainly ride an automatic moped but wanted to learn shifting without breaking the bank. Definitely going to fix the bike a little bit paycheck by paycheck.
One of the main weaknesses of Chinese clone bikes is things like horribly cheap controls and imprecise adjustability, so spending a little money on quality Japanese parts to upgrade it is well worth it and will enhance the experience for you... have fun!
Doesn’t hurt take 101 refresher course!! One thing I didn’t think of is lining up cable slot screw opposite direction… good point there!! 👍🤙
Sure thing buddy, glad it helped, it's the little things that can give long term benefits!
Harley Davidson Charge $115.00 per hour now. And I seen a video before on your channel on how to change a clutch cable and it helped me. Love Penny's Decoration on motorcycle bar. Penny and You Del Ride Safely and Stay Safe.
Thanks Paul, good to know that we're both getting equally fleeced, seems they just unified their labour charges with main dealer car brands now... just thankful we can do small jobs at home and save the worst of it aye... Have a great weekend buddy and keep everyone safe too.. . D&Pxx
Back to basics , great video and exactly what your channel has always stood for !
Peace and love to you both 👍🏻☮❤
Thanks buddy, seemed like time for a little simple skills again.. Hope you're all keeping safe and well.. D&Pxx
Great vid Del, thank you. Very very tempted to buy something like this so I can do some work myself, bit of maintenance etc. My latest bikes have wiring looms that stretch from here to Scotland! Really enjoy seeing how things are done. Thanks again 👍🏻
Isn't that the truth Chris, newer style bikes are getting way more complicated and baffling to fix, you'd almost say that the factories are doing it deliberately aye.. !
Del, any advice on where to source a cable for an aprilia tuono 125? Cant find any specific.... Any universal ones you recommend?
I’ve changed lots of cables but I’d never assume I know all the tricks. U always seem to have some way of making things just a bit easier or cleaner.
Cool, thanks buddy, appreciate your feedback.
Another great video Del... Very well explained. Nice job brother.
Thank you Brother. Glad you enjoyed it, simple little task..
Nice vid mate. Everyday is a learning day and coming from a car mechanic back ground onto a motorbike one, I've learnt something new myself. Keep well mate.😎👍🏍
Great to hear Nick, really appreciate the feedback mate.
I'm not a young man. 🙂 (63 years) and I just learned how to put my cable on Thank you, my good man.
Most welcome Sir, glad we could be of help!
Hi 👋 please help 🙏..I have truxton 2011 year 20000km. My speedometer started losing connection fom time to time and when I turn steering to the right side then its working,so I taken out head lamp and check all connectors and whirring and everything looks fine, but when i moved whirring in front corner of fuel tank than speedometer started to work, then I opend whirring (40 cm from lamp) and could not find broken whirring or rust, but from that moment I opened wires speedometer stopped working and don't have any readings on it..did you have any problems like that? Please help 🙏 😢 don't know where to start ? I would really appreciate some advice from you Del. Love your videos..Thanks and greetings from Norway .
My cable just ripped, watching this helped me understand a lot
Top video, always worth brushing up on these skills. Throttle cable replacement is always a struggle for me, get there in the end, but never easy ( when it should be!)
Thanks
Yeah, you're right, throttle cable are a lot more fiddly... All things get easy with practice though aye mate, at least you take the job on and don't pay through the nose for someone else to do it.!
I replaced my Bonneville clutch cable myself with a Slinky Glide after your previous video and I can't speak highly enough of them. Very light and smooth compared to the gnarly old cable. A good lesson well delivered Del! Thanks.
Thanks mate, there's nothing like the instant improvement of a fresh new cable aye.. Have a great week and keep safe mate...
Excellent as always Del. And you are absolutely right, I know that the dealers are there to make a profit however outright taking people to the cleaners just isn't right.
Yeah, you're right, It's a hard debate buddy, they have a right to a living, and a qualified technician commands a healthy salary, then of course all the other overheads... no quibble with the level of dealer bills, they're all perfectly explainable, but with really simple tasks like this, you can side step some hefty bills for a little time and effort yourself..!
In my experience cheap clutch cables been always snapping, 3 of them, so now I'm sticking to OEM staff, never ever had a problem. Funny enough it's been snapping on all of my 3 bikes . Don't go cheap on your bike and it's not going to go cheap on you.
Your videos are great and have helped me a lot. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome!
Always the place to go to find simple yet top advice for small tasks on my Bonnie! Thanks again!
You are so welcome!
Forgot to mention. I went to a dealership in Bromley and they charged me £130 + vat! Looked online and you can buy throttle cables for as cheap as £18 for a RE interceptor OEM!!! Always taking from the small guy. I think next time I'm going to have a go myself. Cheers del, all the best 👌
Yeah, that's mad money aye, sadly it's no robbery, running a bike dealership is never ending outlay and technicians command a decent salary (which is as it should be).. but for simple little jobs, we sometimes don't need them and can manage these little things at home. !
Excellent tutorial Del 👍
Good step by step vid to help others. Nice one Del.
Thanks 👍
Spot on as always Dell & Penny, if i ever strike it rich i think im going to make a large donation and buy you your own bike shop/ dealership just so i can come learn from you :) thanks for the 10 years of vids 😀
Thank Nicky, how cool would that be, id have to make you a partner and you could run a wheelie school out the back..! and yeah, ten years + now, how time flies.. Thanks buddy.
@@Moonfleet41 ahaha deal! 😆 worlds worst wheelie school but would make an excellent youve been framed YT channel 😉 time flys my friend but your providing countless people and generations of people the tools to do home diy and learn and understand more about thier motorcycle. Your providing a service which is awesome
Very engaging to watch Dell as always.
Yes a person watching can use their mobile phone to take a photo for future reference. You just never know you may just get cut short and have to leave it for another day because of some eventuality!
Ah the mobile camera, can save a million heartaches for sure! Hope you're keeping well and having a good week there, D&Px
Superb, Del… this is how you both built this massive community you have here!
Hope the two of you are feeling stronger every day after everything you’ve gone through! 🏍👍🏍
Thank you Gary. Yes we are! and you're right, this kind of videos is indeed right where we started just over 10 years ago.. got another one coming in Friday, this time on a Harley..! Have a good week and keep safe both of you. D&Pxx
@@Moonfleet41 glad to hear it! And good news re the next Harley vid. I’m still mystified about how to remove my fuel regulator from my FLSTFI! It looks like the mechanicals were born in the tank… seriously stymied as to how to get it out. 🙃. Have a great week, both of you. Pretty steamy here. 😎
@@garya3056 The only two times i have dropped the tank pump assemblies out is on a Sporty and a Road Glide.. yours most likely lifts out the top like all big twins, the lower half of the internal assembly is hinged, and you need a small screw driver to unlatch it, and then it folds out straight from it's 'dogleg' position, and can be withdrawn.. sadly this was before i make videos... but this link may help you buddy..!? ruclips.net/video/a4gJuZG8wtM/видео.html
@@Moonfleet41 man oh man so that’s it! Holy crap I’m an idiot. Now to go poke around in there again. Thanks for the vid, Del. Much obliged… !
@@garya3056 Ha ha,.. Eureka moment.! Good luck buddy.
Oh . ... a Manual clutch cable . Nicely explained . ☕
Great video, Thanks for sharing, do you need to add oil for the slinky glide cable?
Hi buddy, both the OEM one here and the Slinky are similar construction, and any brand new cable will be fine installed without pre-oiling, It's after that where you need to make a choice, if your bike never goes out in the rain, then it won't ever really make much difference, but on the other hand, if you ride every day in all weathers, then it's beneficial to oil it and keep the inside cable from corroding.
@@Moonfleet41 cheers, I am an all weather rider, especially Europe. Can't wait for covid19 to finish.
A little oil will always help. Back in the 70's with my trials bike I used to turn the slot in the handlebar adjuster upwards and add a few drops of oil inside, leave it overnight. Because in trials I rode through streams, a little emulsified oil wept from the lower end of the cable. Same with the front brake cable (remember them) !
always good to see jobs on all your bikes, drive save penny..👍
Good job
Thanks Gerard,👍 Glad you enjoyed it.
nice video brother, just in time for me since i need to replace my clutch cable !! penny's bike looks awesome !!!! stay safe guys cheers from new york!!!!

Covering all the minute details with excellent instructions helped me avoid a disaster with my new clutch cable installation. Thanks so much!
Hi Del nice sitting in your class today mate Its good to relearn old skills As always you are a good teacher as we are all not mechanics but willing to give the simple jobs a go
Thanks Dean 👍, that's the intention, just to spread a little basic love that some people can pick up and use!
Great video Del, even though some may know the procedure, it is nice to watch and it is always prudent to review what you known adjust accordingly. Cheers!

Thanks Mark, yeah we've done a lot with this Triumph over the years, it's the most well kept bike we've ever had.. Glad you enjoyed the video mate.
Great stuff, thinking in terms of new riders, perhaps a video about how to adjust and lube\clean a chain would be useful for them.
Thanks mate.. i made a video on that over 10 years ago and it's always been popular, still gets watched today.... it may be time for an update and do it again, so yeah, ill fit it in soon.. Here's a link to the old one.!

Hiya Del,great straightforward video as always mate. Quick question, have you reinstalled the air injection, back in the Bonny? Just removed mine and the O2 sensors on my 2012. Just wondered if I've made a mistake. Be great if you could put my mind at rest either way. Keep well, keep safe,God bless.
Great simple skills video Del, especially for a Triumph rider! The only question that came to my mind was when should a clutch cable be replaced?
Hi Wayne, a clutch cable does a lot of work, and will wear over time, so if you ever see a stray wire that's broken away from the end, that will make it weaker, or when it gets stiff and notchy.. they're consumable like tyres and brake pads, just a bit less often.. so keep an eye on them buddy.
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks Del, I'll keep an eye out for sure. After watching the video last night my wife commented on how likeable you are, all the best to you and Penny.

It's Penny's Bike, I doubt that She's into that kind of riding.
Well you don't know, my eldest is into trials bikes. She loves it!!!
Great and simple instructions as always ,I loved the engine guard have you done a vid on fitting one of those and also where you get them from.
Hi Norman, thank you for your kind words, I actually made that engine guard from scratch myself using sheet metal and welded the frame in behind it... there is an early video series on it in the Triumph Scrambler Playlist on the Channel... you can buy them and they're easy to fit, but they don't come right up the front of the engine in that way!
It never hurts to brush up
Nice simple explanation
Thank you so much 🙂

i am suprised this new cable uses oil and not graphite or something similar.
It doesn't "use" oil mate, it's just a precaution to keep the moisture out.. Graphite wouldn't do that obviously.!!
Well it’s a it’s much easier than on my old Harley

Is there a video on changing throttle cables on the air cooled Bonnies I’ve taken tank of so now comes the fun bit 😂
I own a 2020 Bonneville Speedmaster that I put over 57,000 miles on and prior to watching this video, I had no idea how to change my clutch cable, so thank you for showing us!
I was adjusting my clutch on both edges and now when I switch the bike on or change gears it doesn’t move nor stall. Any clues?
Are bonneville cables, clutch, throttles, brake the same as any other cable? Ar cables universal?
Hey great video, do all clutch cable expand when they’re hot? Is there any way to get around that ?
Thank you for a very clear informative instructional video👍👍
You are welcome, we're glad it's helpful to you mate!
