First look: Kawasaki W800

- You think you can slip one by us Kawasaki? By not telling anyone and just putting the W800 up on a showroom display window on a busy Pune street? We have a fifth sense about these things. Here's the lowdown:
48PS/60Nm 360-degree firing 773cc parallel twin motor
Right-side up forks, twin shocks at the back
300mm floating disc up front, no ABS
Drum brakes out back
Fuel injection
Almost entirely metal
Alloy rims (we think)
19" front, 18" rear wire wheels

Looks like a modern version of an old Bonneville or XS-650. I like it. I've owned, in line fours, a Harley and a gaggle of two and four stroke dirt bikes. This would be something I'd love to cruise around on or take short rides through the hills. I like the fact that there is not too much extra garbage bolted to this one. It's very handsome.

What an absolutely gorgeous engine. Kawasaki got it pretty much exactly right with this one. Wish they were still available in Canada.

Fortunate India!! They took the W800 away from us here in Europe in 2017 due to emissions. I'm very, verrry happy that I bought mine when they came out. I now have 70,000 km on it, and every one a joy. Check out the review by Marlon here on RUclips.
Close, but no cigar. They just displayed one here in India and never offered any for sale.
*Motovore* Thank you kindly for a good introduction to this motorcycle. After reviewing a lot of different models, I've finally decided the W800 will be the one I'll buy. I realise I've come along here more than 2 years later, but hopefully Kawasaki are still producing it in this stunning blue colour. It, as you say, looks the business. It's styling absolutely nails it. As you weren't actually informed at the time, as to what the final price would be, do you think I could impose upon you to give me the price in your money, so that I may convert that to Philippine Pesos, as I'll be retiring there in the near future. Unfortunately, David, we did not end up getting the bike here at all. They decided against launching it.

Discontinued model in the UK. Buy a good used w650, also has a kick start and carburettors. Fantastic oil tight reliable bike, the best copy of a 60s British bike out there with none of the problems.
That's what a W 800 should look like, not the 2019 version. W 650 is the best though, carburrated and kick starter!!
To many bikes not geared high enough for modern highway riding,
70-80 mph, rpms way up. it looks fantastic though.

Try buying one of these in London - there isn't even a Kawasaki specific dealer. Only plastic bodied sports bikes and they expect you to seriously order them online.
That is surprising. Perhaps they will be available soon, seeing that they've launched cafe racer versions at EICMA recently.

It's called a DESMORALDIC vale drive, in case few people know what that is. No over head cam, no pushrods either.
Why don't they advertise this bike? Are they afraid someone might actually want to buy one. This is a Damn Pretty Bike. I just purchased a bike. If they would of advertised this bike I might have purchased it. An 800CC motor is a pretty decent mid-size bike. Plus this bike looks Retro.

I'm afraid Kawasaki never did it. This was a show piece and never launched.

only thing good about it is that there is no faring and plastic front mud gaurds,, which is difficutl to mainain,, which brakes even by the jerks of road pot holes,,,, need not to have an accident, as in my Karizma, Tramps Bonneville,, coming in 900 and 1200 which I had a ride in Gudgaon showroom, What I feel is like they hide carburetor and have electronic fuel infection,,,, they should have covered disc brakes to give look of drum,

It will be retired from sales in 2017 in europe as it doesn't hold up to euro 4 emission regulations and safety standards. This bike has almost 5 years in very low sales. :(. (I have a w650 and sorry that Kawa did not bet strong on this)
João P Carvalhinho - low sales were mostly in the USA, I think. It has sold well in many other markets from what I hear. Yes, it hasn't been a famous motorcycle I'll note...
I believe that kawasaki USA didn't even had the W800 for sale. This bike was introduced right before "neo retro" got mainstream... And kawasaki had a winner at hand if it wanted to. This bike was considered by many (me included) a lot more stylish and faithful to the old school than the bonnies and others at the time, but it lacked engine and ciclistic. (Triumph just got it's act together now with this new line). Kawasaki moved on, and it is mentioned around the webs that the z line will take over again.
João P Carvalhinho - my apologies. You're right - the 800 was never offered in the USA's market - it was its predecessor the W650 that was offered, and then taken off owing to market preferences back then.
Keep in mind that many fantastic motorcycles were never sold to the USA - a great example is the last standing true muscle bike - Yamaha's XJR1300. The XJR is available only in Australia, the UK, Europe and some Asian markets.
Although off topic, I'll disambiguate that a true muscle bike is naked, comes with an oversized engine, is air cooled - proudly shows off its cooling fins, and finally - comes with an old 1970s-1980s school 5-speed gearbox.
Sadly, the XJR will be discontinued soon owing to tougher Aussie & Euro emissions standards.
Yes... And that is something I find strange to accept. USA has "50 countries" under one unique license and regulations framework. It has much more market than all euro countries combined... even so, lot's of bikes don't even come close.
Also, W800 production has been stopped for most markets, I think. It was an early noughties model... let's see what Kawasaki's next retro offering will be.
I noticed that the date on this video is 2016. Is that when you had a look at this bike? We had this bike in our country from about 2010 after the W650 was discontinued in about 2008. It is a pity now that they have also been discontinued. I would have loved to have seen this bike be made into an 850cc.
Yes, this was the W800, and it was just displayed. It never launched here.
That is sad. Well at least now you can have an RE 650 twin, which from memory puts out about the same power as the W800, which was a modest amount. Not yet, but I hear it will be displayed soon. No 400cc as far as I know.

Hey people - guess what - India might get the W800 after all. The article I just read suggests that Australia will continue to receive the W800 - although the U.K. and Europe will no longer get it.
Apparently it has been a success here and this probably means that Indians might get a taste of it too...so may other Asian markets - this is great news. Read for yourselves:
