    Thank you! I have been searching high and low for a logical explanation. I lost 13.5 lbs (from 241 to 228) in about 1 week after surgery and then I stalled for weeks now. I’m now almost at 1 month post op and was starting to think it wasn’t working. My head kept saying (what if you only lose 13.5 lbs from the surgery). It’s hard to trust the process when so many diets have failed before. It’s like trusting a new guy who sounds to good to be true after all your exes cheated on you and/or abused you. This made perfect sense. This should be more common knowledge in the bariatric community and I wish more doctors admitted this and gave the same advice. I won’t weigh myself again until I feel the weight loss myself . Maybe 2 months post op. Nothing worse than eating so little and changing all your old habits then seeing the scale say the same thing and even worse is feeling the same in your clothes. Thank you!! Patience is key. ❤️

    Thank you, Dr. McGowan! I'm glad to hear you warn all your patients about this. I wish more doctors would do that. Seems like most of them just say vaguely that stalls happen ... but the EARLY stall is especially scary and discouraging because it happens before you have lost much weight. You start to panic, thinking that the surgery was for naught. Everyone who gets weight loss surgery should be shown this video.

    Thank you so much for this perfect explanation!! I wish you were my surgeon - you seem so calm & personable. I had VSG surgery almost 3 weeks ago. I lost a stone in my first week but have stalled ever since - I’ve followed the plan and was becoming frustrated. I have been looking for answers but hadn’t found any other than ones that said to change what you’re eating (but this doesn’t apply because I’ve been following everything correctly)… until I found this video! Thank you!!

    Omg thank you so much for explaining my stall.. since surgery on 08/29/22 I went from 276 to 263 and the scale won't move, now I know why. I will continue to walk my 30 mins a day and hopefully the weight will start to come off. But I'm also having problems drinking water. My tummy hurt trying to drink water. I drink like 3-4 shakes a day and about 5-6 popsicles, I don't have the desire to chew on ice like I use to. Me not being able to drink water is very concerning. My first post-op appointment is tomorrow, y'all pray 🙏 for me please!

    • @DrMcGowanMD
      @DrMcGowanMD  Год назад +1

      Stop weighing yourself! The scale can fluctuate for a variety of reasons. But I think it’s safe to say that you aren’t gaining weight while eating 300 calories a day. In the early period after a procedure I recommend avoiding frequent weigh-ins. But please contact your doctor if you continue to have concerns.

      Not a bad thing at all! I'm a big proponent of combination therapy with weight loss medications when an additional boost is needed, or if a patient needs to lose more than the average. This is a very reasonable approach for a weight loss plateau after 6 or more months from the time of a procedure.

    Is ESG the same as VSG?

    • @DrMcGowanMD
      @DrMcGowanMD  2 года назад +3

      ESG stands for "endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty," which is different than VSG (vertical sleeve gastrectomy). The ESG procedure is a non-surgical technique that reduces the size of the stomach with endoscopically-placed sutures.

    • @TheJaiNetwork
      @TheJaiNetwork 2 года назад

      Thank you for the question. I was wondering the same

  • @staceywalters7476
    @staceywalters7476 3 года назад

    Have you performed a VSG on a previous ESG patient?
    If not , will you ever consider doing so with a BMI of 30 or 31 and a diabetic ?

    • @DrMcGowanMD
      @DrMcGowanMD  3 года назад +2

      Stacey, if you've had a prior ESG and your response was suboptimal, a VSG will probably not be more effective, given the similarity in the procedures. It can be done, technically, but a procedure that is both restrictive and malabsorptive (such as a gastric bypass) may be a more effective option. Of course, at your current BMI that may not be entirely feasible. Just something to consider.
