It is worth remembering a few facts. Mozart's father came from Augsburg in Swabia and moved to Salzburg to pursue a musical career. When Mozart was born, Slazburg (city and region) did not belong to the Habsburgs nor was it subject to Austria. At that time, it was still part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (which existed until 1804), governed by independent prince-bishops. Salzburg was incorporated into Austria only after the Congress of Vienna in 1814, but by then Mozart was long dead (he died in 1791). Mozart left Salzburg for Vienna in 1781. Beethoven and Brahms did the same, but that doesn't make them Austrians. Mozart consciously drew on German musical traditions (e.g. Singspiel) and repeatedly identified himself as German in his letters. However, the officially promoted version is that Mozart was an Austrian and Hitler was a German.
