I was expecting smokeless gun powder as well, not flash powder. May generate more pressure than the flash powder. Don't know how they compare, and can't find any good info on the internet. Of course, there are many varieties of both.

Life would be better if I had an extra inch to play with. Every little bit counts. Ok, I'm gonna continue crying at the pistol range - every round fired brings me closer to the moment when I have to go home and face that "just an inch short"; while at the range, it's an inch low, an inch high, an inch to the left and an inch to the right, but never an inch longer. I can't win.

One of the best comparisons of powder load/barrel lenght Iv'e seen!!!

  • @flhusa1
    @flhusa1 5 лет назад +1

you should load powder then use white bread for wadding and then load the projectile. its not loud because you need bread wadding and you need to pack with a brass or lead hammer and a wooden dowel rod. try loading with powder and white bread wadding only packed really tight and you will get a good boom and much more power on your projectile. i have been using black powder cannons for over three years and white bread seals and no embers and it does not need to be cleaned up.

I got a couple of these cannons to play with my nephew. I got some bricks, built a couple little castles, and we see who can knock down their castle first. Also works great with Lincoln logs and Jenga peices, but it is pricey. I have a solid wood wagon wheel we painted like an archery target for practice, and I attached protectors to the guns so we could set the range according to degrees. Works fantastic, I wish I had some of these as a kid.

Hey TAOFLEDERMAUS, not sure if this is the best way to message you, but I’ve been thinking it would be cool to explore the supersonic effects of various rounds. For example, on a calm day, shoot (or “propel”) a round near a column of smoke, across a placid surface of water in a tank, or through some thin Mylar ribbons. Would be cool to see the difference between streamlined vs blunt and compare with subsonic projectile effects.

With Blackpowder to get your powder right my father would lay out a white sheet and shoot over it slowly increasing the powder load until it peppers the white sheet than back off it and that is the maximum load for power. Then you tweak it so you paper it with the lead you are shooting to the sights. What is the point if you shoot over the deer or under? And always load to your sights because what if you forget it shoots high when looking at the buck of bucks.

  • @adam_-adam

How about filling that with flash powder and than detonating it off with a shotgum primer, maybe since the primer is a mini high explosive, maybe that shock will some how make the flash powder detonate or burn faster.

Years ago, CVA offered Cannons in Kit Form. They had models of the kind used on ships and the land type.

6:30 but it sound slike flash powder is actually the best propellant seeing how short the barrel is, no time to develop gas pressure so a very fast expanding powder is good, no?

Dumb question- doesn't the jet of exhaust from the touch hole tend to make the muzzle rise?

VERY cute cannon/video/shooting - I LOVED the slow motion butterfly in the background.
VERY impressive video shots... as always.
As for flash... err...that stuff is scary!

Built one of those things while in shop class in high school. Used M80 powder and fuse firing a ball bearing. went approx 4 inches into a tree. Cannon survived well.

I believe the same company that produces that Cannon also has a cannon that has interchangeable barrels and uses a 209 shotgun primer to propel the projectile if I remember right they have a 177 barrel, a 22 barrel, & a 30 cal barrel.
I have a 32cal Pennsylvanian rifle it is a percussion lock and I bought a device called a MAG Spark what this is is a replacement for the nipple that uses a 209 shotgun primer.
Using a federal 209 shotgun primer a 32 caliber round ball with a thin patch this thing propels the ball hard enough to penetrate a two by four about 1/2 inch at about 15 yards.
This might make an interesting episode for you to do if you can get your hands on a traditions Crockett rifle in 32 Caliber which uses a 310 or 311 round ball and patch then shoot it using the mag Spark device no powder and a thin Lube patch to see what kind of velocities you get.
Out of my Pennsylvania rifle which has a 41 inch barrel this thing is so quiet a pellet rifle is louder than it is.

Thinking back to when I was nine or ten years old and playing with firecrackers and those little green plastic soldiers trying my damnedest to blow them up I would have loved this little cannon. Having said that I did make it out of childhood with all my eyes and fingers so it's probably a good thing I didn't have one.
