The diplomat's wife is really an incredible woman. She deserves 1000% more credit for getting Chen to not kill himself and showing her bright smile on her face when she left.
I really appreciate CNA has made the effort to make this documentary to provide some external perspective. So well done! Of course, as a Taiwanese, this incident is something we are totally not proud of.
As Taiwan is one of the world’s safest society now a days .I believe that Taiwan authorities have learned from this unpleasant situation but really until these days media in Taiwan are still corrupted by money and fame.
I wish swedish state funded media was high quality like this channel, you guys release high quality reasonably unbiased documentaries at such an impressive quantity
SVT has many incredibly good documentaries. Uppdrag granskning is one that is unbiased with great investigating quality. You probably don't watch SVT often.

I recently came to enjoy your channel a lot and your highquality documentations. Those are truly touching stories. I would just suggest that you maybe want to add subtitles for some that don‘t have them allready. It would make it a lot easier to follow the stories well for people like me not having english as their first language (: Cheers!
This case is by far one of the most disappointing moments from the media that I have ever seen. I knew they would mess with the negotiation, but I didn't think they would call Chen repeatedly, preventing the police from talking to the man, it was ridiculous! And the moment both the injured diplomat and his daughter were released, basically hundreds of reporters and cameramen kept blocking his way, snapping pictures in front of their faces, despite them bleeding out excessively. The police were also in the wrong, firing when not necessary, possibly shooting the hostages, and not creating a barrier between the scene and the media. Thankfully, the police were given a better understanding that negotiating is better than firing, especially when it comes to a case like this. I hope as well that the media would learn not to stand in the way of the police, but I highly doubt that would be fixed.
The medias in Taiwan are always out for blood, it's both good and bad because it forced government to be more transparent but also can ruin many lives.
@ Zander Hernandez Did you know about the kidnapping & murder case that caused these men to be on the run? Now THAT was one of the most horrendously botched police work case. Then this on top! These men had kidnapped a famous celebrity's daughter for random. Their initial plan was to exchange daughter for the random $. But the police had botched it up so badly, that it resulted in the daughter being killed. 3 times, the men had negotiated to exchange hostage/money. The police were to stay clear of the pick up spot. But the police had openly communicated the plans through a radio channel that is open. Basically, any taxi driver and news reporters can all hear what the police were planning. So the media and crowds all went to those pick up/exchange hostage areas, resulting in the bad guys not being able to do the exchange.
Media has its pros and cons in hostage taking drama, this is one of the horrible cons of it. But one of the worst outcomes of media meddling for is the Luneta Hostage Taking in Philippines 2010, 9 persons killed, all 8 Hong Kong citizens were killed and the hostake taker Mendoza. All of the Police plans were broadcasted by media, the spots of snipers were aired and the bus where the drama takes over has a TV.
@@rossyv.4396 The media never learns. Especially with thinga like this. It is live drama. Drama means ratings. Ratings meant more money and so some media corporation would rather sacrifice the safety of the people just to get the story and be the first to show it.
He's exactly what the kidnapper wanted. So when he walked outta the house with the lawyer it was like walking out with a dufflebag full of money. He WAS the demand. So when he came on the scene and agreed to defend his wife in court, that was what the whole thing was about in the first place. With the police chief, there was no initial trust and he didn't have the demands settled. It was impressive that he was able to extricate two hostages from the house. He had no experience yet he saved lives too. If the gunman wasn't suicidal, he probably would have used the wounded family members as a tactic to turn up the heat to get his demands more quickly but he didn't. That was kinda puzzling but it makes sense because he knew he'd have a harder time getting what he wanted if he let them die AND he still had other hostages to hang onto to ensure his marginal safety.
So maddening! 🤬 This is a perfect case example, and should be used for police training, on how NOT to do things. The reason why the innocent family survived, lived, was not because of the police's "good work", no. They were not killed because the gun man Mr Chen chose not to kill them, and released them.
My girlfriend was pointed a gun at head while hold around by 2 thugs, who tried to rob her and escape via motorbike. she refused to give her stuff, they told her if she scream they will kill her. she screamed like crazy, and they hit her in the head with the gun before they escaped on the bike. The worst part, me and my gf was in a fight literally 10min before I henged up on her. it could been her last day, when she told me, I started to cry, terrible stuff.
so well made it was because of thats the only way to attract the attention of people around the globe to watch and share... its a story of a true event and perhaps can be a lesson to learn from. this is not something to laugh about or to say " Nahhh... too much orchestrated !" So, can you do better or rather as original and boring as you expect it to be? good luck!
The CID inspector, negotiator talk so proudly, as if they did an awesome job 🤦🏻♀️. This case was a mess! Everything that shouldn't be done, were. The inspector & police had no control of the situation. Even the crowd control was non existent. The crowded circus delayed victims from getting to the hospital sooner. This hostage family lived/survived because the gun man chose not to kill them. Not because of the police. In fact, it was opposite; due to the polices actions, the family could of been killed, or even shot up by police team, multiple times! 🤬 If anything, it was Frank the lawyer that settled it all and achieved the outcome. (Good job Frank 👍) And let's not forget how this entire case came about to begin with. The kidnapping of Ms Bing's daughter. The daughter was supposed to be returned/exchanged alive. But the police had messed it up so badly, after multiple attempts of the bad guys trying to do the exchange & having all the attempts fail. Which resulted in the daughter being killed, and the bad guys getting away. It could have been prevented. The kidnapped murder case along with THIS case too, can truly be used for teaching new police recruits; as an example on how NOT to do things, or do negotiations. Or on "how to get victims possibly killed". 🤦🏻♀️
I watched 3 big documentaries for this case, in my opinion, Ho and Frank both played important roles, Ho saved the 2 wound people from dying by blood lose. Frank came in without protection to show his brave and end up letting the rest people out
the police and the irrational behavior from the media really plays a role in this mess too. If that bandit isn't a family man and possibly a more cool headed from the other 2, i think this documentary would have been on the darker tone
How a sophisticated mind a man could have to tell lies the way he was! Police 侯 never entered the building to negotiate with Chen while he had been claiming he was. Mr. Chen totally distrusted 侯。 That’s why Chen asked lawyer 謝 to help.
I love how every documentary I've watched on this channel is so well made.

Im on the rabbit hole of CNA's negotiators series, I love how they make these with all the perspectives of people involved, well done.
I lived there when it happened and everyone was glued to their tv. This story gives the entire story such a different perspective.
I love how CNA bring this documentary

That mother of the family. Wow, what a lady she is!
She is a real believer. They actually converted him to believe in Jesus.
@@stonynotdusty how can a man be God and then die? It makes no sense, but Jesus pbuh is a prophet, which does make sense
