I had a four-level ACDF (anterior cervical diskectomy-fusion in my neck) and another fusion in my mid back, and a laminectomy in my lower back five years ago to (as the neurosurgeon referred to it) un-squish my spinal cord. I’m walking again, albeit with a cane, and in almost constant chronic pain. That was the tradeoff: my legs work (sort of) but managing pain has become a huge (mostly unsuccessful) challenge. It is a real mind-over-matter challenge to endure this kind of thing. BTW, I played amateur hockey from a kid on a pond, to high school, to college club, to adult rec (beer league). Do I regret it? Honestly, yes and no. Playing hockey was the most fun thing I did in my life. But it certainly had its cost. Cheers, and best of luck to the rest of my fellow back problem sufferers.
